Dorian, I really like the way you reviewed the Pop beta. Even though Pop 20.10 is my daily driver, I found your review informative and well worth my time. I find many "distro" reviews to be "more of the same". You have a very good voice and your video quality is spot on. Thanks for doing this.
Hi Larry, thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it, cheers!
I'm studying for the Linux LPI essentials exam right now and your videos are super helpful about Linux. Thank you so much for this video. I decided to install pop OS due to a video I saw on another channel but your explanation was so much more detailed and helpful.
I've never tried Pop!_OS, but your review highlights some really impressive features. I think the accessible integration of features like tiling is quite cool. I definitely have times where I'd like to use tiling, but I don't want to have to switch to another UI. Nice review, too. I like that you go into some detail without getting bogged down. I'm subscribing.
It's definitely a great thing they've created here. Thanks for the comment and thanks for subscribing!
Appreciate the way you demonstrated all the new features instead of just chatting about them. A great introduction for people that aren't familiar with POP!_OS.
Thank you, I really appreciate the comment. Cheers!
Thanks a lot, mate! That was a really interesting review to watch :)
Glad you liked it!
Excellent job on the demo.
Pop OS is good stuff! When I delved into Linux a year ago, this was my first distro and I still use it! Looking forward to the next version. Thanks for the preview!
Agreed, and thanks for watching!
Great review. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you, Dorian.
Glad to put the word out!
thanks for the vid
Good one . Thanks for showing it to us : )
My pleasure 😊 Thanks!
I've been a Windows user for decades, but dreaded the switch from 7 to 10 for privacy reasons mainly. And then 11 was announced and it's even worse. About a month ago, after watching a Linus Tech Tips video where they recommended Pop, I decided to give it a try on an old laptop I had lying around. It does work out of the box, although the different environment takes some getting used to and I need to get familiar with the commands. But channels like this one are a great help.
Looking gooood. Long time mint mate user here, i always put i3 as optional. I really want to try this now 😄
It's definitely awesome to be able to switch on the fly without logging out!
Very nice overview. I wish this early preview was available to the public.
Thank you. It will be worth waiting for the final product when everything is finished!
@@Doriandotslash I'm looking forward to it. Thanks again.
THank you. Nice presentation. Looks very functional really nice search hopefully it can be customised so it's available both on key stroke and in the view ready to click on it. Dorian, would you do a Kali Linux presentation or have you done one?
It is ver functional and easy to use. I’ve actually never done Kali before, but I have used it. A video might be a good idea!
This is dope! Pop rocks!
Yep I’m pretty impressed with what they’ve come up with 👍
This looks so good!
This is pretty much flagship linux.
Yeah, not really. If they only offered some other DE. Gnome is just terrible, although System76 made it much, much more usable, better.
It runs great too!
The ability to move the clock is a big pet peeve of mine in stock Gnome, so when my System76 Gazelle arrives I am excited to test out different configurations.
Nice, congrats on the Gazelle purchase! I keep eyeing up the Lemur or Darter myself, but I just bought a new laptop not long ago :P
Hello, how to drag and drop videos on VLC, mpv, etc..?
I like all your videos friend :-) especially one video about Qubes OS, I really would like to know how did you installed Papirus Icon Theme on Qubes OS, I've been training but i couldn't. Please help me.
Hello and thank you! Once you download the theme, you need to copy it from the web browse's VM to Dom0 so you can place it in the ~/.icons folder. Check the commands on how to copy files to Dom0 here : www.qubes-os.org/doc/copy-from-dom0/
Very nice. System76 are filling in the gaps that Gnome devs are leaving behind.
Out of curiosity, on Ubuntu you have to use unreliable extensions to do it, but is it possible to get text titles always showing on the dock/launchbar at the bottom windows/kde/lxde style?
I feel like so many other oses strip that useful feature out to look clean when it just makes your computing experience less efficient because icons simply do not portray very much information.
Maybe that's something you can put in a request for in their Git repo. It might just get added as a feature.
Can you still search in workspaces? My usual workflow with gnome is hitting super key and typing application name or hitting super key to see my workspaces.
If super key is pressed in cosmic (with setting to open workspaces) does it still allow searching?
Yes. If superkey is set to open workspaces you can still type an application name to search. It will behave the same as stock Gnome does.
I’ve tried running PopOS a few times and in general I think it’s wonderful, however I have a persistent problem with it where my computer just refuses to shut down properly when running it. I also have yet to find a remote desktop utility that is as reliable as Remote Desktop for my work (though I’m sure that’s a me problem) the new cosmic desktop looks really nice
I have been using dash to panel with arc menu to give a more KDE feel. Will panel be an option or will dash to dock take over for all pop users?
Thanks for the insight
You should still be able to use Dash to Panel if you prefer it, and you can just disable the COSMIC panel completely by turning it off.
I just loaded Dash to Panel and it worked fine. See my tweet here with a screenshot : twitter.com/DorianDotSlash/status/1386151387822649347?s=20
I'm really looking forward to it. Setting up even "easy" window manager like Qtile is such a pain compared to just installing distro with DE.
Yeah this is a great feature for switching on the fly without committing to a DE that you have to switch in and out of by logging out.
When I read about COSMIC my first thought was "Cmon, we don't need the 11th Gnome-shell-full-of-extensions-renamed DE", ut I must admit that after watching your video, I am intrigued! Never tried Pop OS, nor used tiling WM, but I definitely will give both a try whenever a public beta will be available!
It's definitely something new and unique, and super flexible to meet many needs!
Umm, 95% of this stuff is already available in Pop.
I have tried GNOME 40 in Fedora, but after few hours I have switched back to POP OS, because I'm used to vertical workspaces and It would be great for me if POP OS won't switch to GNOME 40 or at least have option for users to choose which version of GNOME they want (The same they did for Nvidia drivers)
They will not be switching to Gnome 40 in 21.04. Confirmed.
I wanted to try gnome for his gnome customized shell...but this Cosmic desktop doesn't amaze me really well. If they didn't transformed the dock on the down and they wouldn't enlarged it like in Windows/KDE...it would be awesome. Hope I could still install the old GNOME Shell with the tiling option
You can change the size of the dock and where it is placed. You can also turn it off completely if you don’t want to use it. Then it will look like stock gnome.
@@Doriandotslash If that's the case: I could consider to switch on POP OS. I hope they could also create variants of the distro with different desktops and customizations. (I think the strongest point of Pop! Os is the DE)
how to get rid of the window frames in tiling mode?
I there a HUD?
Not sure if that's an option that they will add, but you can't remove them currently.
@@Doriandotslash too sad because that is why I love qtile so much, but I can spend weeks tweaking ... which I would like to avoid
What about customizing the login screen? That would be the icing!
That would be sweet. You can do it manually with a bit of work, but it follows your shell theme so it usually fits in nicely.
the only thing that is bothering me is that the dock goes across the screen. ive been using popos for a while and i lineup my dock to the left and auto hide it. if it goes across the screen it means when i hover my mouse over it, even in the corners it will pop back up
True, and that hasn't changed so far. But if you're using hotcorners, then the hotcorner will still activate even though it makes the dock appear briefly.
There was an option to enable extend across the screen, if you disable it i think it will look like dash to dock. It is at 7:53
Dash to panel my choice. Tiling is nice on Pop because still minimize and close buttons on the windows.
Yes I'm a big fan of Dash to Panel as well and that's what I always use. But they've done a great job with how they set up their desktop and put all the settings in one place.
@@Doriandotslash I just tried Pop OS and tried dash to panel. Looks very nice and you can add things to it. I always use the beta's of Thunderbird and Firefox, but I can't make a link of them to put them on the desktop. I could not open Firefox. Thunderbird I could, but only once. Otherwise Pop looks very nice and easy to use. But it uses a lot of memory compared to Peppermint.
Pop OS is my go to recommendation for new linux users, it literally does everything perfectly...gaming, productivity, programming...you name it.
Love pop os! And would love to have a system 76 desktop they are just beautiful but sadly is not possible to import one to my country and would cost a kidney and an eye to do so...
i upgraded from 20.10 as it was prompted. but disappointingly after the upgrade it never worked. i had to reinstall 20.10 back. now ignoring the upgrade messages.
I had a bit of an issue as well, but I figured it was because I was using an experimental ISO from System76. I just opened a terminal and ran the updates from there, rebooted, updated again and it upgraded properly. Just "sudo apt update" then "sudo apt upgrade" to do it.
What happens when you tap on app on dock that is open? Does it minimize?
No it doesn't, it brings it into focus. If you middle-click it, it will open another window. This would be a good suggestion to add as an option in the setting though.
@@Doriandotslash Yes. I would love pash to panel behaviour
I don't know why but everything on pop_os seems like they are little bit enlarged on my 1360x768 display. Even gnome seems okay but pop_os has everything enlarged? Ever heard of this?
Check the scaling in the display settings. It might be set to something higher than 100%.
is pop os rolling release?
No it isn’t.
Will this be on gnome 4 by June or still gnome 3
It will very likely still run Gnome 3.
I wonder if we will be able to update to gnome 4 because I’d really like to use pop with gnome 4
Where can i grab the ISO?
It will be released in June and will be available on their website. pop.system76.com/
Hope it comes out with gnome 40
As far as I know it won't be Gnome 40.
The only thing preventing me from wanting to use Pop is how painful it is to manage extra kernels. Just straight systemd-boot or grub would be so much better than whatever it's using now. Headache!!
It does use systemd-boot, but once booted in, you can always install grub afterwards.
Oh my god! Windows 11 is a (BAD) clone of Pop!OS 21.04
Thanks for the video!
Haha it's funny I saw the Windows 11 videos recently and thought the same thing :)
Hey Dorian I have a request. Can u plz make Gentoo install with Systemd plz dont say no. I am literally requesting everyone I can becoz the wiki isn''t clear on systemd install
Yeah I initially started doing the Systemd install but ran into strange issues that the Wiki didn’t cover. It might be outdated. Spent a few minutes trying to get it going and just gave up to install OpenRC instead which worked perfectly.
@@Doriandotslash So do u have any plans on doing systemd install. It'll be a great help for many
@@deepakshivraj4881 I’ll revisit Gentoo again for sure so I’ll see if I manage to get it up and running properly one day.
@@Doriandotslash Thanks Ill be waiting for ur video and plz show after install systemd in your video. Dont just stop the video when ur done installing systemd.
Anyhow Ill be definitely waiting for this video since Im planning to dive into gentoo
@GavinHalo But the wiki says systemd is still not up to date
A good review, but there is nothing compelling enough to move me from Gnome 40.
Out of curiosity, what is it about Gnome 40 that you feel you would miss if you switched to Pop?
@@Doriandotslash Simplicity. An environment so minimalist that it gets out of the way.
@@antoniostorcke Yes but PopOS also uses Gnome, it's just version 3.38. And you can just turn off the dock in the settings if you don't want to use it or see it. They're basically identical visually.
@@Doriandotslash I will wait to see what Pop does with Gnome 40.
hmm. not a fan of the launcher being constant on the screen.
There is an option to remove it in the settings, but as I demonstrated, it is marked "TODO", so the version I have has not yet implemented it. There's also options to remove the other 2 launchers as well.
This is what gnome should be.
I think the invest a lot more in the desktop than Ubuntu
Definitely. Not only do they innovate in creating new and useful features, but they also listen to their customers and users to create what people want. This is a company that truly cares.
@@Doriandotslash true something that Ubuntu has lost sadly
Why change what works? Gnome was good, people got used to it, why this? As a gnome user I was considering giving pop os a try, not anymore.
It's not a change, it's additions that are optional. All the things I showed can be easily turned off in the settings to get back to stock Gnome. I've even installed Dash to Panel and it worked as intended.
@@Doriandotslash Yes but unfortunately there are two kinds of Linux users, those who like tinkering with stuff and those who just want to get about their lives, don't have time for messing with things and just want to get work done. So those already used to say vanilla gnome wont like the changes (done by default) to their productivity tool (vanilla gnome) such as those in the Cosmic desktop and rather use something else like Debian or Fedora. It wasn't too far off from vanilla gnome before but not its just outright noticeable. Gnome is purposefully simple for this reason but popOS is making it complex. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
@@OM-bs7of Cool, then just use Debian Gnome
Microsoft 11 copied this ;-(
