Damn it's kinda heartbreaking to realize that he was a low ranked officer even after his moment. Props to historians like Chen Shou for giving him posthumous respect though.
I really like these character by character summaries. Never would have known that Huang Gai had done anything else beyond his role in Chi Bi with that Naman side story.
Huh didn't know he was just a captain for a long time and a lieutenant and lieutenant general for a short time. I always assumed because he is a named and notable individual that he was a general. I guess he wasn't as notable as Cheng Pu was. Interesting that he was just content with his position rather than being ambitious and wanting a higher position. Funny that his son got a high nobility title, unlike Cheng Pu's son who did not even get a high nobility title.
this probably implies that unlike Cheng Pu's son, Huang Bin probably served as he also got the position of administrator of Nan which means he was at least capable.
It's crazy I've been playing dynasty warriors since d warriors 4 and I had no idea of the depth it contained. I am glad I found your channel a few weeks back. Also did not know huang gai was not a big player like in the games...thanks for the upload
Interesting that despite Huang Gai's relatively low ranking, his son was given the position of administrator, while Lu Meng's sons received a Marquis title, not something small, by any means, but it gives me the feeling that reason why Lu Meng's clan did not retain any influence, is because the clans that already had power in Wu, did not want further competitors, so they influenced Sun Quan into basically giving that clan a consolation prize, while the Huangs, who weren't anything to begin with, passed under the radar for at least one generation, as the entrenched clans did not see them as competition.
It also probably implies that Huang Bin was in the army because he also got the administrator assignment too. For sons who were not active, they either get their dad’s nobility title passed on to them or a symbolic gesture for their dad’s service
Okay, knowing that “周瑜打黄盖,一个愿打一个愿挨” is ahistorical confirms my belief that Luo Guanzhong was probably referencing some very spicy fanfics... Joking aside, this new series reminds me that I need to rewatch your videos on military titles. It's hard to keep track of the "official" Han and irregular positions!
I am not familiar with the Romance novels but I remember a famous Wu general named Taishi Ci (太史慈) who is often portrayed armed with throwing knives, so is he not in your list?
Taishi Ci was better known for his archery. Ding Feng is the one who is historically known as a throwing knife user. But if you would just check out the beginning of the Cheng Pu video, it goes into detail on how these lists are created and how different historical characters are classified according to the Book of Wu.
I assume the main reason why Huang Gai reached the title of general so late is due to Sun Quan not yet being an emperor so he had limited amount of titles he could reward his officials with.
Not quite, plenty of people got promoted to general before him and the highest Huang Gai reached before his death was lieutenant general. Aside from his heroics at Chibi, he just wasn't that important rank wise in Wu.
Huang Gai willingly got his butt whooped just to sucker Cao Cao big time and give the Sun-Liu Alliance the chance to beat Cao Cao at the Battle of Chi Bi.
@SeriousTrivia I found where I had seen it from. It was on the Koei wiki under the novel section. It said that Zhang Liao shot down Huang Gai when he attempted to pursue Cao Cao after the fire attack. There’s no source and it’s a wiki so my bad. I just found it was an interesting event even if it’s completely made up.

truly a loyal man that did not hold much ambition in his heart. He stuck through with all three Sun's through their ups and downs
Okay, I didn’t realize Huang Gai was such a badass. He’s so cool!
Huang gai was the most badass person in Wu imo
Huang gai is my favorite character in dw4. because of his ability to steal allies horse in the early game, by placing a bomb near the ally general
I really like these character by character summaries. Never would have known that Huang Gai had done anything else beyond his role in Chi Bi with that Naman side story.
“I hit pretty hard, think you can take it?”

Another let's talk lore vid, its gonna be a good day 😁
Huang Gai, the main protagonist of the Fire Bomb incident.

@SeriousTrivia Huang Gai might not have been the greatest general, but he was definitely a good father it seems.

Oooooh. Huang Gai. Was wait for the hung guys 😔

I wonder why he wasn't promoted more considering his services to all 3, such a shame
Probably what Cao Cao thought when Huang Gai offered fake defection.

@@SeriousTrivia Hmm, interesting.
Huang Gai willingly got his butt whooped just to sucker Cao Cao big time and give the Sun-Liu Alliance the chance to beat Cao Cao at the Battle of Chi Bi.
It’s pure fiction but sure
Surprised you didnt use Huang Gai's official character art from tw3k
wanted to be consistent for all 12 generals so all of them are on ROTK and thus all of them for this series will be ROTK
I’m curious if Taishi Ci was omitted from this historical list for a reason? Or was he just more active during the early Sun Ce era?
Probably check his first episode, he's in another category iirc.
He died really early before Wu became strong to contest against the others.
I mean watch the beginning of episode 1 and you can see him being grouped with Liu Yao since he served Liu Yao and only served Wu for a short period
Thanks! Had missed him being grouped up with Liu Yao in the first ep.
Tiger lieutenant
Was Zhang Liao being the one to hit Huang Gai with the arrow a romance invention then?
That’s not even in romance…

I really thought he was a general
