Ratts death is kinda jaw dropping if you watched the deleted scenes because you get to see his wife and children cheering for him in the seats and then watch him die
Yup. I remember that when Lucasfilm showed Phantom Menace 3D they put the entire race on it. And Ratts' wife and kids look quite...well, not handling it well.
Fun fact: Ben Solo is not named after Obi-Wan, that is a popular misconception. He was actually named after the greatest podracer in the galaxy, Ben Quadinaros! Unfortunately Kylo/Ben realised he could never live up to Quadinaros, so he decided there was no point in trying to finish what he started. So he instead chose to follow the second greatest podracer, Anakin. And that's how Snoke turned him to the dark side!
I think there's a deleted scene in The Phantom Menace where, after Ratts crashes, it immediately cuts to his family in some bizarre attempt at dark comedy. That was kinda sick lol, glad they took it out. Dud Bolt was my favorite racer! Always loved his design. But I always played Sebulba in the arcade game, or Anakin.
So, most of the racers crashed, and at least one racer died. Children, this is why we do NOT race by using two jet engines tied together with magnets and rubber.
I remember reading a book in which Ratts Tyerel's kids became pod racers themselves, they encounter Anakin whom they ask to help them race against Sebulba

I like the fact that no one every invented a story for Neva Kee. He just disappeared and that's it. No one ever found either him or his unique pod. Mysterious and unsolved forever
Would have been nice to have some commentary on their machines, too. Neva Kee's was particularly interesting, since it had no cables and the pod was placed in front of the engines.
there's a LOT you didn't mention about the racers. I'll follow up to your information with my own; Elan Mak is actually an alias for Kam Nale, who entered his name backwards to avoid suspicion. The boonta eve wasn't the first race he entered, as he followed Aldar Beedo from race to race to attempt his revenge. Ben Quadinaros was originally not going to enter the podrace if it wasn;t for fellow racer Boles Roor, who drugkenly bet five million pegats that Ben was too much of a coward to enter at his glimmik concert. Much to the Sneevel's dismay, Quadinaros actually entered the race with a rented BT310 podracer. Even though he never made it past the starting grid, he won the bet because he did in fact enter. The reason his podracer failed, however, was sabotage by another, and that was carried out by Ark Roose. Bumpy Roose was hired to sabotage Anakin's podracer by Diva Funquita, as she wanted to bring an end to Skywalker as she sorted out her bets with Jabba. He eagerly accepted and made his way to the podracing hangar later on. However, he didn;t know which podracer was Anakin's. He attempted to ask Sebulba, but was brushed off, being told rather unhelpfully that it probably looked like a pile of junk. He spotted Quadinaros's podracer, and having never seen it before, thought it to be in disrepair. Roose sabotaged the podracer, rigging it to be unable to accelerate. Figuring he had finished his job, he headed to his own podracer to make preparations. Teemto Pagalies was also at Boles Roor's glimmik concert, where he found out that Mars Guo was hitting on one of Sebulba's Masseuses, Ann Gella, whom he had fallen in love with. Mars had offered to take Gella away if he won, which angered the veknoid. Pagalies told Sebulba about the affair, and sealed Mars's fate of crashing. Interestingly enough, in the 7-Gee Lounge before the race, Teemto had drank a few too many juri juices. A hitman had been hired by Jabba to capture him and feed him to the sarlacc, but he was saved by Qui-Gon Jinn who gave the hitman the wrong coordinates for Teemto. He considered anakin a "good kid" and wished him luck in the race.
When I first watched the phantom menace, I only knew Ratts as “the funny noise cocaine frog”. I had no idea his story went so deep. I was a fool😔 RIP Ratts Tyrell. Your name will live on, and your funny noise will echo through the stars 🙏🙏🙏
This reminds me about the old podracing games like Racer Revenge. If Criterion & EA would develop a new podracing game, that would be awesome and an instant purchase for me

Dug Bolt was Sebulba's "body guard" on the track to help in taking out as many other racers as possible so Sebulba would win. It's in a book I read somewhere.
My favorite racers in Star Wars Episode I Racer are Bullseye Navior, Gasgano, Dud Bolt, Ebe E. Endocott, Slide Paramita, Mars Guo, Aldar Beedo, Teemto Pagalies, Neva Kee, Toy Dampner, Wan Sandage and Sebulba. They were and still are my go-tos in the game.

The 3D Cinema in Union Station had a Pod Race, a pinball, an abandon mine, a NASCAR race, a roller coaster and many other shows. The pod race was my favorite. The chairs your sitting in each have their own hydraulics to move you in all directions, the row your sitting in also are movable. It feels like you're actually in the race it's so realistic. The two that leave you queasy and dizzy are the pod race and the roller coaster. I will have to check and see if it's still open
Aldar Beedo was my favorite racer with Mars Guo being a close second back when I played the Podracer game on N64. I liked that Beedo was an assassin in legends. It gave me a whole new angle in which to view the Boonta Eve Classic. Everytime I see the race now, I see how many times Sebulba came so close to getting capped mid-race cuz Beedo's podracer was always close by for most of the race. Also, having Elan Mak out to kill Beedo for revenge made for an interesting "kill triangle". I also liked Mars Guo because in legends, not only was he an amateur racer, but also a bit of playboy as he had the audacity to hit on Sebulba's twin twi'lek masseuses.
I love how wacky these character, species and planet names are even by Star Wars standards. hearing them all in quick succession feels like a slow descent into madness

Just to correct you on something. Boles Roor didn’t win the “previous 2 Boonta eve classics”. I watched the scene back and it said “2 time winner; Boles Roor”. Also, if Sebulba is the “Reigning Champion”, that means he won the last Boonta prior to this one. Boles Roor may have won it twice before then, but not the previous one. Or… Something like that, I think I’ve phrased it right.
Two interesting points: First, in Legends, because of Ratts Tyrell's death, one of his sons started a movement to have the Podracing sport outlawed, and he succeeded. Second, in the video game version of The Phantom Menace, there's a bounty hunter named Jym Lang who, for reasons unknown/I don't remember, was hired by Jabba the Hutt to hunt down Teemto Pagalles. If that is/was canon (unlikely), then it's highly likely that after getting shot down by Tusken Raiders, Teemto was thrown into the Sarlacc.
My first contact with Star Wars was The Phatom Menace and the PC version of the podracing game, Star Wars Racer (just got it again in GOG, such nostalgia). Later came Star Wars Racer Revenge and it was just as awesome. Podracing has to be one of my dearest pieces of Star Wars, I love the variety of pilots, machines and tracks. 3:50 The probability that Mars died in that crash is slim. He was spinning upright when Anakin passed underneath him, & Sebulba was perfectly fine after having a crash that practically mirrored his. Also Mars is my boy, no way he'd go out like that.
wrong, this was not Mars Guo's all first ever race, this was his first time at the Boonta Eve Classic Race, Mars was an experienced and a tough skilled pilot who was active in the Minor Rim Leagues and had great success and fame, Mars was a great danger and a serious competitor for Sebulba and so he knocked him out because Mars could very well be the winner.
My favorite racer is young Anakin Skywalker, because he was the only human to compete in podracing, and because he succeeded by winning the race after breaking free from Sebulba, who was taken out before the end of the 3rd lap, which allowed the boy to be free from slavery. After Anakin broke free, Sebulba's podracer crashed and exploded.
I would love to see the whole Podrace scene explored more. Even though it is just a little side plot in Star Wars, especially as a motorsport fan I absolutely love podracing. There is so much going on in Legends with all these pilots and I'm sure there could be plenty more exciting storys about races on Malastare, Aquilaris, Baroonda or Ord Ibanna being told in a book or, what I would actually prefer (I'm a lazy), in a movie. Bozzie Baranta with his unusual race track at Ord Ibanna, the criminal Fud Sang, the unknown Bullseye Navior... I would love to see lots of content about all these guys and their racing careers. Btw - Mars Guo was a very talented and successful podracer with a pretty arrogant attitude which came from his success and confidence. I believe to remember that he survived his crash and continued racing, winning several races including the Spice Mine Run on Mon Gazza of course ;) --- yeah, I know, canon and legends.... but guys, let's all decide on our own how we want our Star Wars universe, shall we?---

If anybody played the game on the N64 or PC. At 3:58 you can see my all time favourite pod racer; Bullseye Navior in the front with the legendary Irateq RQ 550C Podracer. Always used him.
I need a movie about Mars Guo rebuilding his pod and racing his way to the top in order to get revenge on Sebulba. He can only speak using "RAAARR" and variations on it though.
You know what's great about Legends? Everyone survived this race! Well, almost everyone. But those that did went on to do more! This reminds me of the off-road racing that's done out in the deserts of the U.S. But the racing on Malastare is a mix of that and the city racing that's in the Historic Grand Prix of Monaco.
did anyone ever see the original ben hur movie? when my dad went to see tpm with me in 1999 , he said the pod race reminded him a lot of the chariot race. i went back and watched that. i defintely think lucas was inspired by that race for the manner in how this race went. it is pretty neat

Wan Sandage, Neva Kee, and Ben Quadinaros were a few of my big favorites racers in the N64 Racer game. Their pods were always the most unique looking.

My first contact with Star Wars was The Phatom Menace and the PC version of the podracing game, Star Wars Racer (just got it again in GOG, such nostalgia). Later came Star Wars Racer Revenge and it was just as awesome. Podracing has to be one of my dearest pieces of Star Wars, I love the variety of pilots, machines and tracks. wrong, this was not Mars Guo's all first ever race, this was his first time at the Boonta Eve Classic Race, Mars was an experienced and a tough skilled pilot who was active in the Minor Rim Leagues and had great success and fame, Mars was a great danger and a serious competitor for Sebulba and so he knocked him out because Mars could very well be the winner.

My favorite racer is young Anakin Skywalker, because he was the only human to compete in podracing, and because he succeeded by winning the race after breaking free from Sebulba, who was taken out before the end of the 3rd lap, which allowed the boy to be free from slavery. After Anakin broke free, Sebulba's podracer crashed and exploded.
Mars Guo is my favourite racer hands down.
I wish there was more about Neva Kee and his podracer, since that was my favorite in Episode I Racer
Neva Kee is the king, loved his pod in the n64 game.
Toy Dampner and Slide Parimeta were fun to race on 64. Most my records came with Mars Guo.
I would love to see the whole Podrace scene explored more. Even though it is just a little side plot in Star Wars, especially as a motorsport fan I absolutely love podracing. There is so much going on in Legends with all these pilots and I'm sure there could be plenty more exciting storys about races on Malastare, Aquilaris, Baroonda or Ord Ibanna being told in a book or, what I would actually prefer (I'm a lazy), in a movie.
Bozzie Baranta with his unusual race track at Ord Ibanna, the criminal Fud Sang, the unknown Bullseye Navior... I would love to see lots of content about all these guys and their racing careers.
Btw - Mars Guo was a very talented and successful podracer with a pretty arrogant attitude which came from his success and confidence. I believe to remember that he survived his crash and continued racing, winning several races including the Spice Mine Run on Mon Gazza of course ;)

You know what's great about Legends? Everyone survived this race! Well, almost everyone. But those that did went on to do more!
This reminds me of the off-road racing that's done out in the deserts of the U.S. But the racing on Malastare is a mix of that and the city racing that's in the Historic Grand Prix of Monaco.

did anyone ever see the original ben hur movie? when my dad went to see tpm with me in 1999 , he said the pod race reminded him a lot of the chariot race. i went back and watched that. i defintely think lucas was inspired by that race for the manner in how this race went. it is pretty neat
Don't let the lack of screen time fool you, Aldar Beedo has the best looking pod in all of Star Wars. He's my favorite for sure.
