I can’t believe there was only one fatality the whole race. A lot of those crashes were brutal. I’m surprised Mahonic and Teemto survived *and still went back to race some more.*
I mean lots of the extended backgrounds are hilarious, but usually those that don't tie back to main characters are actually fun. Stuff like "Sebulba flew with Lando Calrissian" or "random alien met with Luke to tell him about his dad he met once for like 15 minutes" is beyond cringe though. Also the fact that episode 1, the only Star Wars movie primarily targeted at children, killed of the family-father is quite disturbing. In fact I find it still quite disturbing as a grown up man.
There were a lot more survivors in this raced than I expected. Seriously, only one death?! Also, I had to double take when I thought I heard Elon Musk competed lmaoooo.
The podrace was the first Star Wars scene I ever saw, so it'll always have a special place in my heart. Also, no idea why, but Gasgano is one of my original Glup Shittos. Don't know why young me loved that gangly little dude, but I did. I didn't have any toys of Anakin's pod, or Sebulba's, but I absolutely had Gasgano's.
Same here! I remember having a crank and launch Ody Mandrell Podracer and a mini dueling set with Gasgano and Teemto Pagalies racers. I always loved those two designs... Gasgano's engines and Teemto's cockpit.
As someone that's played the Switch port of 'Episode 1: Racer' when it came out as I was born after the N64 era had come & gone, I love that they made a game about the 2nd most exciting scene in the movie was such a blast.

A new pod racing game, or remaster of the old one, where you can play as one of these characters, but then also create your own pod racer would literally sell like hotcakes🙏🏻
Honestly, how amazing would it be if that was something that ends up happening in the Star Wars Jedi game from EA. Just really want to see what pad racing would look like with today's graphical capabilities!
Years and I'd buy it and play it. I remember the first ever Console system I ever got was a N64 Star Wars Pod racer special edition pack as a early birthday gift from my sister and her boyfriend she was dating at that time. I liked Dud Bolt. He's a stupid looking puppet with oversized teeth. Also Clegg Holdfast is great. He's fully CGI (not as cool as a real puppet) but he's just an Elk-man. Some of the new aliens in the Phantom Menace are just Alligator face and a deer on his hind legs. I love it. It pairs nicely with how the Mos Eisley Cantina in Episode IV has Satan, the Wolf Man, and an Apollo 11 Astronaut getting drinks (and the Mandalorian has Dr Mandibles and Frog Lady, two classic characters). There is something so charming about how many background characters in Star Wars were designed in five minutes and for zero dollars. The Gonk droid is another classic: he's just a walking trash bin, and his name took about as much effort as his design. I love it. I think the Apollo 11 Astronaut might be my favorite of the lazy background characters. I like to imagine how confused that he must be... This man ended up going through a wormhole and traveling a long time ago to a galaxy far far away (like some kind of weird homage to Planet of the Apes or something), so naturally the first thing he did is to find the nearest space bar and order some space booze. Pretty relatable, not gonna lie...
I completely forgot about the official cut of TPM reintegrating the cut scenes of the podrace lap 2 and the rest of the racers. Good for universe building but my gosh it makes the race even longer. Teemto Pagalies's story is pretty wild. I already liked his podracer's design with that kickass cockpit, but i have a new appreciation for him now that I know his story and that podracing is his happy place.
I think my favourite part of the pod race scene is how much care went into it. Almost all of these machines move the way they look like they would. You can see heat from the engines and the effects of them. Even though it's all space nonsense, it seems like everything has a purpose.
I'm surprised to hear that so many survived, let alone finished the race. I've always assumed that every racer died except Anakin, Sebulba, and Ben Quadinaros.
I've always been partial to Gasgano because of the LEGO Set, Mos Epsa Podrace (7171) because while you got Anakin's pod and Sebulba's pod, it was great to get a lesser known podracer since so much of the focus in the movie was on Anakin and Sebulba. We'd eventually get Aldar Beedo's pod in Watto's Junkyard (7186) and if you actually took the shop apart, it made up the framework to make Mawhonic's pod in conjunction with the parts used to make up the junkyard, although unfortunately Mawhawnic himself has never been made in minifigure form. There is also the Podracing Bucket (7159), but the pods are not to scale. Neva Kee's pod and Clegg Holdfast's pod are two of the default models that can be found in it, but not their characters as minifigs. The point of the set is more just to make up your own podracers, but it was still nice to see default models of different pods. Sadly, I don't think LEGO will ever make the other podracers into sets, it's not exactly the most marketable subject matter if you aren't Anakin or Sebulba, and even then Sebulba gets dropped half the time, but Gasgano will always be a favorite of mine because I really like the look and color of the pods, and I love how his minifigure is built, too.
Gasgano was always my favorite racer (most likely due to the toy Comercial actually saying his name), but my favorite pod was always the Farwan & Glott FG 8T8-Twin Block2 Special (mostly because I had the micromachine and game where it's design stood out)
Sebulba was actually a time traveler sent from the future to kill off darth vader before he became too powerful. Speaks volumes for the safety of the podrace that so many crashed, yet survived.
This is so nice to get stories on all these characters. I'd love if we get a From a Certain Point of View book for The Phantom Menace. All of these guys could have great little stories to tell!
Teemto Pagalies! I remember in the episode 1 game for the ps1 buying him a drink prior to the Boonta Eve Classic as Qui-Gon in order to speak to Watto. Plus his pod racer looks really cool!
Since seeing this on opening day in '99 I've always felt that the Shure 520DX "Green Bullet" microphone had to have been the inspiration for Mawhonic's engines...
Neva Kee was always my favorite character in Racer. His pod is just stupid fast. 0-600 in like half a second. Also, poor Ratts Tyrell and family. Just watched the episode of Clone Wars where 3PO saves his planet. S tier.
Glad I didn't know as a kid that Ratts Tyrel brought his entire family to watch him die. Though as an adult I find it hilarious he is known for having no fear, then died screaming.
I was hoping for a video like this after watching Phantom Menace in theatres a few weeks ago, excellent use of gameplay from the Racer games (and I appreciate that Game Night reference)
I just love all the usage of footage from Episode 1 Podracer. I love that game, my favourite character to use was Mars Guo for his stats and because I didn't like how Sebulba screwed him over twice.
Ben Quadinaros is either the fastest or one of the fastest pods in both podracing games that exist. This tall drink of water dominates every metagame he's present for
Lots of fun details on these characters. I knew most of them from the game, but stuff like my man Ody Mandrell helping Luke Skywalker is wild. I had no idea that was a thing
If I had to pick a fave besides Anakin, it'd be Neva Kee. The unique design of his podracer is very cool, it has incredible acceleration in the podracer game, and the way he cackles when he crashes? Apparently, it's very on-brand for him.
Great video! Podracing is my favourite thing in SW. Just one tiny nitpick: I'm quite sure that the general opinion of the hardest racer to unlock in the old game is a legends character called Bozzie Baranta, not Ben Quadrinaros. Baranta was unlocked from a track called The Abyss, which is the podracing equivalent of walking on a tightrope. If you fell once you lost the race certainly.
Still can’t believe Mars Guo is one of the only racers to have his intro cut from the film… he’s my favorite racer! EDIT: I should say plenty of racers didn’t have intros, but Guo had one that was filmed and in rough VFX that was cut from the final film.
Damn. As always, Alex and Mollie, well done on this! 👍👍🤘🤘👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 I still have my original copy of The Phantom Menace Visual Dictionary from 1999, and one of my favorite pages was about the podracers. Of course, most of the info are no longer Canon, but at the time I was always excited to try and learn more about these guys. Again, awesome job on this video, Damons! 😊 Have a great week, and May The Force Be With You, Both... Always.❤❤
Anyone else find Sebulba's design oddly satisfying to look at? They did such a good job making him feel like a real person, he's got necklaces and beads and he looks kinda sandy from living in a desert. Idk, it always just appealed to me.
At least according to the official strategy guide for Episode I Racer, I believe Wan Sandage was only like 4 years old and their species had a life span of like 10 years.
Man, I really wish they would bring back the Podracer games. I remember the old games' career mode being pretty in depth for a game of its type, and having one nowadays with more tracks, even bigger tracks, more career options plus a lot more character and racer customization, more in depth story exploration of the racing circuit, etc, would be phenomenal.
I saw phantom menace at the theatre tonight and was thinking, “I need to research all the podracers.” Turns out you posted this yesterday. Synchronicity.
Fun fact about Teemto Pagalies: In The Phantom Menace video game, you can actually meet him in a bar in Mos Espa, claiming that he's the best racer on Tatooine. If you ask him if he ever wins, he just says "Bet on me tomorrow! I know I can win this time!" And in the level afterwards, not only will you find Teemto in the bar, not only can you buy him a drink, but in the next room over, you can find a bounty hunter working for Jabba who's looking for Teemto; if you rat Teemto out, the bounty hunter will laugh, saying that he'll be fed to the Sarlacc after the race.
Identifying and naming each pod and racer was the pinnacle of my star wars knowledge at the age of 9. I'm 32, it's still the pinnacle of my star wars knowledge.
Ebe Endocott was one of my favourites in the Racer videogame. Him and Slide Paramita might have relatively short boosts, but their handlings are unmatched
With all these racers having other jobs, this is starting to sound more like F-Zero than podracing. But I guess that makes sense since they're basically the same thing.
Mars Guo going RAAUUUGGGGHHHHHHH then exploding lives rent free in my head 24/7
I hate that voice he does before he crashes. It sounds so dumb.

EDIT: I should say plenty of racers didn’t have intros, but Guo had one that was filmed and in rough VFX that was cut from the final film.
Thank you, Alex! 🏁
Wan Sandage being known for looking like a walking stalk of broccoli is stated in an official compendium as well, I take it :')
Damn. As always, Alex and Mollie, well done on this! 👍👍🤘🤘👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I still have my original copy of The Phantom Menace Visual Dictionary from 1999, and one of my favorite pages was about the podracers.
What a great video. I had no idea about a lot of these racers
Fun fact about Teemto Pagalies: In The Phantom Menace video game, you can actually meet him in a bar in Mos Espa, claiming that he's the best racer on Tatooine. If you ask him if he ever wins, he just says "Bet on me tomorrow! I know I can win this time!"
And in the level afterwards, not only will you find Teemto in the bar, not only can you buy him a drink, but in the next room over, you can find a bounty hunter working for Jabba who's looking for Teemto; if you rat Teemto out, the bounty hunter will laugh, saying that he'll be fed to the Sarlacc after the race.
Identifying and naming each pod and racer was the pinnacle of my star wars knowledge at the age of 9. I'm 32, it's still the pinnacle of my star wars knowledge.
its such a shame star wars never did anything with pod racing ever again after episode 1
Ebe Endocott was one of my favourites in the Racer videogame. Him and Slide Paramita might have relatively short boosts, but their handlings are unmatched
Absolutely love these types of videos from Alex
With all these racers having other jobs, this is starting to sound more like F-Zero than podracing. But I guess that makes sense since they're basically the same thing.
I wonder how the galaxy would take a liking to F-Zero racing?
