The Phospholipid Brain-DHA Advantage
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 сер 2024
- Dr. Rhonda Patrick discusses the differences between different forms of DHA in terms of bioavailability and transport into different cells. She talks about why a specific type of DHA (DHA in phosphatidylcholine) is more readily transported into the brain because it forms DHA-lysophsophatidylcholine. Krill oil and salmon roe both have a slightly higher concentration of DHA-lysophosphatidylcholine. She also talks about astaxanthin, a carotenoid that is unique to krill oil, and has potent antioxidant activity and prevents the oxidation of DHA and EPA.

The only channel where I have to DECREASE the speed of the videos rather than increase.
LOVE IT.
yea, that works much better. Thx.
It is super information dense isn’t it?
I do my videos like this too because otherwise the editing can take forever and very few subs it makes it feel like a waste of time. This video for example:
ua-cam.com/video/ZJ1SntT6lg4/v-deo.html ,
which by the way is on health behaviour change, is 25mins and literally took me a week to edit and I tried to cram as much information in as possible so I literally speed read so those who did watch it and liked it watched it on 1/2 speed lol
In addition to hitting the rewind button a lot.
Now I know that fish oil have to be refrigerated. Do I need to put my krill oil in fridge too ??
I will take any supplement that gives me this level of enthusiasm.
Incredible comment right here.
that made me chuckle.. but seriously, me too!
Lol
Absolutely!!
Can't supplement passion ;)
Powerful Dr. Rhonda Patrick.
I feel like I just earned a college Biology credit. Thank you!
More I took those classes
Haha that’s hilarious
My God! Your a machine!! How do retain so much info like your brain is a computer! I’m in awwwe of you! You are ridiculously knowledgeable. I now follow you and listen to your videos while I make my kids lunches etc. surprisingly I was already making a smoothie similar to the ones you suggest having had such a bad year or health last year, contracting salmonella, pneumonia and a serious flu I didn’t ever want to go down that path again! Well this year I have not been sick once.. touch wood.. lol.. but all the doc videos, health videos have opened my eyes, I feed my kids and I only healthy food and so rarely do they eat any sugar! Thanks for being so informative, I hope you reply, gosh I’d love to know all you know! How many years of study has it taken for you to be so knowledgeable, I’m guessing your whole life!! Simply amazing! :) Thank you Thank you!
She's reading in from of a camera.
Rhonda has it right: DHA-lysophosphatyl choline is very important and that alone justifies Krill oil. I am busy studying the algal oils. There's a definite story there that is yet to be clearly figured out. I'm sure Rhonda will do that!
+David Footrman - Hi, hope you are well. Any updates sir?
Take a krill pill Doc ;)
David Hidalgo haha nice
Cool. Nice comment.
maybe taken too many.
I love coming back to videos as I learn more about the brain. I recently started taking Phosphatidylserine and talk about a boost in mental power, less ADHD symptoms and more focus. It also lowers cortisol during my long term fasts. Now I’m curious if I can take Krill oil and see similar effects or not since it also contains Phosphatidylserine.
Thank you Rhonda!!!
Did you toke krill oil?
I successfully achieved 1% of the information from this video and yet i feel the wisdom in it.😂
I love how passionate she is about DHA and brain health! Rock on!
Phenomenal video. I can’t believe you got that amount of great information across in just 10 minutes.
This pure flow of information gives me eargasm ☺️
Anyone remember taking a class in college where you knew you were in the wrong major after the first lecture? yea... this is giving me flashbacks to that moment.
TL:DL Version: Krill oil is more gooder...mkay...
Hey Doug, do not feel bad, I just graduated with BS in dietetics and nutrition and this was testing my knowledge of biochemistry. I will listen to this again while taking notes so as to update my biochemistry text books. This is how good this is.
@@alexkasimir9931 Hi Alex! That is good to know 😃
Realized were in the wrong major after first lecture? 😂 Run to the office to change your major.
Thanks! I started to supplement with krill oil at week 8 of my pregnancy and was eager to find more information on this supplement. I hope it helps my baby’s brain!
Thanks, Rhonda. Great infomation.
Been using Astaxanthin and Krill oil for a while now, and it most definitely does increase HDL. Mine is 2.4 (UK number).
First found out about dr.patrick on joe rogans pod cast. So much good info it's hard to keep up
Hey Dr. Whiz Kid, you must have started college when you were 12. I loved this presentation, thank you. I just made you my nutrition guru. I just ordered both krill and fish oil last night and you have answered the question I had about which was more effective, glad to hear that taking both is okay. Now I'm going to scan all your more recent reports.
The amount and density of information here is outstanding. I’m going to seek out more of your videos.
Rhonda, Just want to thank you for the time, and thought, you put in your videos...Much Appreciated!!....We all wish we were as smart as you... ;-)
Awesome! Straight to the point! Tell us more about astaxanthin!
@7:40
I absolutely love your videos. They are the most information packed UA-cam videos that have ever existed. In fact , if there was a competition for the greatest amount of information that could possibly be put in a video yours would win hands down!!!
Keep'em comin'---> :))))
Agreed wholeheartedly.
Dr. Can you do a workup on algae oil in regards to EPA DHA and bioavailability. many of us are concerned about the oceans health in regards to overfishing and overall ethical concerns. Thank you.
@@Ayrad160 nice argument

Biology Ninga strikes again!
Thank you.
Thanks for your research Dr. Rhonda. I've been curious about krill oil for a few months. I think it was mentioned to you on JRE and you seemed skeptical about it at first. Rightfully so.
Time to modify my supplements and see what happens. Thanks again! : )
Just BLOWS me away, I can barely keep up, but I LOVE it!!!
Me to
I've been having bad headaches since I got the jab in April 2021.
An article released last November revealed it's due to CVT (cerebral venous thrombosis) or blood clotting in the brain. The paper suggested treating it with non-heparin anticoagulant. So I started taking fish oil with at least 1000mg EPA and DHA and the headache went away.
I'm so happy for you. Thank you for sharing your information. It could help a lot of people.
Other natural supplements w blood thinning effects are turmeric and ginger
I have listened to many of your presentations. I especially appreciate two things: (1) The display of the text on the screen; that makes it easier to process the information and complex words which are coming at us like water from a fire hose. (2) The summary (recapitulation) you provided at the end of this presentation. "Review is the mother of retentive learning," as my old Greek professor used to say, decades ago.
im off the dave asprey train but he was right about krill oil, coffee not so much. keep up your research dr rhonda its very much appreciated
I just learned about you today as many years as I've been researching online to better my health. I think you just might me the most knowledgeable person and dr giving information for free about health on youtube. excellent podcasts too. thank you for putting them up. - robert
Love your stuff. As a result of watching you I've starting drinking smoothies similar to yours, taking 2,000IU of Vitamin D a day and I guess now buying some Krill Oil.
I'm going to pick up the smoothie habit as well. Just as an FYI, in her Vitamin D video, she states that she supplements with 4,000IU of Vitamin D daily. I'm doing the same and will get blood work later to see if I land in the sweet spot of blood levels of Vitamin D.
woah, don't overdose on that vitamin D. it is very easy to do.
xoxXOXO l It's been shown to be safe up to about 10000 IU per day
At my first appointment with my Naturopath, he recommended I double my Vit D from 5K to 10 K IU daily!. I've been on that for 2 months and doing great!
EVE Pro Guides - EVE Online PVP and ISK Guides 2000iu’s a day is pretty darn low. You should triple that
once again another epic video. Thank you so much for choosing this path, sharing you knowledge with the masses :) I heard a podcast the other day where you talked about how you felt in your heart and your conviction to educating us. Your years of heard work is greatly appreciated. P.S. Don't change anything about yourself you are awesome :)
Thanks, Dr. Patrick! I appreciated the commenters who recommended listening at .75 normal speed. My brain just couldn't absorb the material at regular speed. 😥 This may be ameliorated once I start taking krill oil!
Good one.
WOW so informative! Your my new bff Doc.! 4real!!! Each video feels like a class! We should all be donating to you for sharing your ever increasing knowledge! Alittle fast for me but I'm catching up...thank you Doc.
Hey Doc, please do an updated video in response to all the recent negative things recently published about fish oil in regards to liver damage
great video! could you please do a video comparing krill oil to algal oil in terms of bioavailability? I've heard that it compares more favourably to fish oil
This is the girl, love her expertise
I like it. thank u and god blessed...
Very consciences and very eager to send the massage across and I liked it .It was a highly educationalin formation !
Wish you had also discussed algal DHA/EPA supplements.
They're no different lol. In fact fish get their omega 3s from algae, however algae omega 3s are in superior form just like omega 3s from krill oil.
Xero lmao, algae oil isn’t in phospholipid form. Stop lying and making things up just because you want to support your vegan delusions
@@lovesgibson,
1). Yes it is.
2). I'm not a vegan. Do fish not get their omega 3s from eating algae? Is this not a fact?
Xero
1. No it isn’t. Provide a source if it really is.
2. I don’t believe you.
3. We’re humans, not fish. Have fun trying to eat pond scum to meet your DHA requirements
@@lovesgibson
1). Coming right up
2). Your problem, I take both krill and algae oil.
3). I never said we had to get omega 3s from algae, just that fish do. Fish do NOT endogenously produce their own omega 3. Also look up "Algal DHA" algae oil exists.
my head always explodes within a minute. you're a bad ass! #deathsquad #jre
Luis Arroyo whatever you do don’t set playback speed to 1.50 speed earth ending time paradox’s may ensue...
Dr. Rhonda is highly intelligent, knowledgeable, beautiful and full of charisma 👍
Well I researched the market for Krill oil supplements and all I seemed to find was supposedly independent review sites pushing a particular brand. There are so many but they all could be the same except for the label, the strength and the price. The paradox of a lousy choices.
+Michael, yes, so sad this Unregulated industry 😐
Wowzers, thank you so much for this great information, Dr. Patrick! I definitely have a greater understanding. Your enthusiasm and knowledge are truly commendable. You'd be even better received by backing away from the camera a bit. It's very intense. Also, choose a nice backdrop and allow yourself more time for your delivery. We all definitely want to hear and understand the awesome things you have to say. :) No offense please...you're so awesome!
Dr. Patrick what do you think of nmn please look into it I will trust your observations of this substance more than most
Hi Rhona, great topic, in-depth and educating as always. Thank you! In your mail, you summarize "I supplement to about 2 grams of EPA and 1 gram of DHA per day...might be a good therapeutic dose". Can you please elaborate on the 2:1 EPA:DHA Ratio & quantities? I was under the impression DHA may be more critical. Best regards, Yuval.
DHA for the brain, and EPA for its anti-inflammatory properties!
After watching this video I picked up some krill oil and decided to give it a try. I took two capsules and about 1/2 hour later I noticed an increase in my energy and concentration. Even my mood was more relaxed.
Could be placebo effect, but so far I'm impressed. Oh, and I already take about 3g of fish oil daily.
Thanks Rhonda!
I have a degree in Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry but this is still quick for me. Great information but it needs to go at half speed.
+Ivan Moore, Amazing. So what line of work are you in, if I may ask. -Cheers
I like that I don’t have to speed it up and it’s all easy to understand. Just outdated in my opinion as algae oil is not included.
lightdark00 algae oil isn’t bound to a phospholipid, it’s almost as useless as omega 3s from walnuts and chia seeds. When the fish eats the algae it becomes useful.
Keelin Blackburn first how is ALA useless when we can convert a percentage? We can skip fish and eat the algae directly. We are descended from fish.
Is there a number of how much more bio-available the EPA/DHA from krill oil is compared to fish oil?
Like 100mg DHA in krill oil would be equivalent to 500mg DHA in fish oil?
excellent doctor. is vegetarianism associated with aging brain? could it had played a role in Robin Williams?
+Doctor Ni Una Dieta Más Robin Williams' brain was probably damaged from years and years of alcohol and drug abuse. I didn't know he was a vegetarian.
No. Hindu and Buddhist monks are vegetarian and do not experience heavy aging. Living on a clean organic diet, restricting calories, and meditation/low stress is what is most important.
im pretty sure meat diet ages you more, and this is coming from a meat consumer
I love it when you say ‘Phosphatidylcholine’!
glad I found this site if bit late in the day .I like to hear the science explained but also in a way that's understandable and helps one make decisions. Thanks.
Rhonda, in your newsletter, you state: "I personally do not take krill oil. Instead, I get my omega-3 in phospholipid form from salmon roe, which I try to eat at least three times per week." However, in this video, you say that you take *both* krill oil and fish oil.
Please clarify.
Rhonda Patrick is the best
Always great hearing benefits from Dr.Rhonda Patrick! Body building UA-camrs like Will Tennyson really ought to bring her on one their shows sometime!
I love your great health information videos on UA-cam!!!!!!!!! Please keep it up!!!!!!!!!! Thank you soooooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😁😁😁😁😁😁
I am curious to know the difference in bioavailability between the ethyl ester and phospholipid forms. Is it 10% more bioavailable? 80%? As always, Dr. Patrick, you are an inspiration. Thanks for sharing the wealth of knowledge.
Wow 🤯!!! First time on this channel. I was wondering about the differences between the 2 when this video popped up!! Thank you for such an in depth explanation. I separately use astaxanthin didn’t realize krill includes it. I’m switching to krill. Thanks for the great informative video. 🎉
Should put that on a morning wake up alarm... DR. RHONDA PATRICK HERE!!!
Rhonda, love your channel. Thanks for your hard work and great information.
Curious about your thoughts on this Rhonda
If an otherwise healthy person eats a can of wild caught sardines and a tablespoon of pollock roe about 3 times a week is there a real need to supplement?
There are obviously other benefits to eating Sardines as well including Calcium, nucleotides, minerals
I do this and feel it’s an inexpensive and convenient way to get optimal O’3s EPA DHA and Astaxanthin.
The cost effectiveness is key because I have more money left over to buy other healthy food like marrow and bone broth.
Thank you for the video Dr Rhonda, look forward to more videos.
This is why she is the Dr and I am the patient....
once again, brilliant work, thank you sooooo much for letting the lay men know about the miracles of science.
She is awesome incredibly informative and enlightening - came to my astonishment that I've been taking fish oil 2000mg EPA one 1500 mg DHA and a krill oil supplement as well. Basically I've been doing all right without even knowing it
I’m curious to know the reason you were taking a krill supplement in conjunction with the fish oil if you weren’t aware since they’re basically offer the same benefits!
Best analysis on that subject in the web!
makes perfect sense as krill oil is lipid soluble and has an obvious advantage in the transport of DHA. My question is how does krill oil compare to a fish oil in respect to EPA and its anti-inflammation properties?
danny85 Not at all. That is why I still take fish oil...very important and I will do a video on this soon.
+FoundMyFitness thank you for the response I truly praise the work you do...your brilliant!
+FoundMyFitness Are you saying you wouldn't take Krill Oil, Sounds like the Krill had a lot of advantages over Fish Oil? Thanks! Mark
+Mark Shields
From what I can tell, they are both useful, just perhaps for slightly different purposes.
+FoundMyFitness Almost every fish oil you buy in the store is already oxidized
I love the text based information addition. Good job!
Not even going to pretend I understood any of this, I feel like my whole brain has been shaken around 😂
I get the overall idea though, thanks Rhonda you star!
Krill Oil it is! Thanks for sharing your insight!
Talk nerdy to me doctor. Her knowledge and work has been so helpful.
Great video with so much information. It will be great to hear you back on the Joe Rogan podcast.
I'd also love to see a breakdown of Chia seeds vs Flax seeds
She's missing plenty of important info.
Thank you for your hardwork Dr. Patrick!! really appreciate it
Will there be a side effects by taking 5-10g of Krill oil per day as a supplement? As the dha and epa are more bioavailable, there is a less grams per gram of omega 3, but are better. Question is toward total daily omega 3 dosage, 5-10g, or even more?
Thank you very much :)
Dr. Rhonda earns bonus points for maximal syllables per minute.
Incredible she went the opposite of dumbing down. Information dense 👍 💕
Wild Sockeye Salmon oil is rich in Astaxanthin if you can't afford Krill oil. It's still pricey, but cheaper than Krill with similar benefits.
Incredible level of info!! 🙏🏾🙏🏾
my conclusion from this video: i too shall take both forms. thank you
Thank-you doctor for speaking straight with details and saving your bias for the end!
Love all your work! Thanks for all you do!
there are so many fake krill oils out there, besides, you know very well that this oil can sit for months and sometimes years on the shelf or in a warehouse somewhere, you know this will oxide the oil and become rancid, so my question is: WHAT KRILL OIL SUPPLEMENT DO YOU BUY FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY???
Lastest I heard she switched to this. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NOZS7BM/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3SWZOEWY4UOPQ&th=1 I Can't remember whic interview.
Vitalchoice.com for me
She recommends Nordic natural. Look for one that is ifos 5 star certified, and check the manufacture date.
Fantastic information Dr Ronda.
MAN! DO YOU KNOW SO BIG WORDS, I'M GLAD I WASN'T TRYING TO TAKE NOTES
Would you please address the toxicity risk of these supplements in a future video.
Big fan of you Rhonda. Keep going! I'm on an 8 day fast right now and my brain is feeling really peaceful. Did some hyperthermia therapy last week and built some muscle mass quickly. You are the bomb.
Also what krill oil supplement would you suggest? Thanks!
Great info, Dr. Patrick! My favorite supplement as well. It's amazing what Omega 3's do in the body. Thank you. :)
There are a lot of studies and meta analysis conducted that show that taking fish oil for over 4yrs reduces longevity. And many of these studies touting it's benefits are done over short periods of time.
While fish oil is necessary for human function it's highly prone to oxidative damage.
Have you read Chris Masterjohn's articles on this? Curious to see if you have and what you thought about it if you did.
Dr. Patrick has discussed somewhere that she keeps her fish oil refrigerated, and that you can spot check your supply by opening a capsule and smell testing it to see if it is rancid (that crayon smell).
mmortal03
I get that - and beyond smelling your fish oil, anyone can request a certificate of analysis (COA) and look at the different values on it from the vendor. If the supplement vendor doesn't have a COA they should be avoided. But that doesn't change the fact that some studies have shown that prolonged usage of fish oil supplements is not beneficial and can actually be harmful to your health.
Clinical trials in nutrition are notoriously difficult to do well. I discuss this topic on JRE #502 around 1-hr36min. if you are interested in my take. Also see my video on the rebuttal to multivitamins are bad-I break down why understanding mechanism and context are so important to interpreting clinical data.
Yes, PUFAs are extremely prone to oxidation, need to be careful when supplementing. As far as fish oil goes, Nordic Naturals isolates their omega-3 fatty acids under nitrogen conditions (so no oxygen) so very little oxidative damage occurs. They are the best fish oil brand. They also re-esterify their omega-3 to triglyceride form.
I'll get into omega-3 benefits in another video but lower all-cause mortality has linked to omega-3 supplementation. That is about as long-term as it gets.
FoundMyFitness
www.westonaprice.org/health-topics/precious-yet-perilous/
This is the article a lot of people are probably referring to.
Mike Stone From the link:" None of these trials provided any evidence that healthy people benefit from taking fish oil or that doses higher than one gram of omega-3 fatty acids per day provide any benefit over smaller doses. The results of the DART 2 trial are particularly concerning because, like the results of the Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital Study, they suggest that high intakes of PUFAs may increase the risk of morbidity and mortality when consumed over the course of many years."
How does fermented cod liver oil stack up against fish oil?Dr.Rhonda has never mentioned it.
I take cod liver oil
Very informative. A lot of new data have been published, any hopes for an update video?
How about the problem of overfishing and the heavy metals/PCBs that fish contain? Fish get their Omega-3 from algae so why not eat algae in stead of fish or krill. Fish/krill simply can't keep up with our demand. Especially when it is claimed by some that fish oil is healthy. It takes 3 herrings to make one pill... Let's cut out the middleman and eat algae
What about grass fed butter, milk, and meat omega 3s?
What about flax and chia based Omega 3, please?
Yess correct. Good question.
I have read that polyunsaturated fats make cells more "waterish" and decrease optimal production of ATP and do not let testosterone get fully optimally generated and are more unstable than saturated fats, thus it meaning that fish oil is a polyunsaturated fat too.
Very good therapeutic information
Thank goodness for the pause button. Otherwise great info. Thank you.
Hard to keep up with this girl. A smart one.
What about algae sources for EPA & DHA?
Akin to krill oil. Fish gets their omega 3s from algae.
Bart Kay has a video on algae like fish oil it is loaded with toxins . ..these toxins are not to be taken lightly...mercury/pcb/aldehydes etc. any of these will fuck you up. jack kruse will not take fish oil supplements because they are rancid...he states that the fish oil has to be processed in refregerated enviroment...shipped in a cold enviroment....stored in cold...
so the bottom line leave the shit alone...eat sardines.
Oceans mom prenatal DHA, what's your opinion? Best source of DHA EPA during pregnancy?
Rhonda, could you share where you source your fish and krill oil supplements from? There seems to be a lot of companies out there that sell it but it is hard to decipher which is the best company to buy from.
she seems to like nordic naturals
Reference ?
Processing is key; only 2 brands, both Norwegian, do it properly.
This is very good explanation of why Krill is superior to fish oil. I've heard that it was superior before, but never understood why. Dr. Patrick explains why.
