The Phospholipid Brain-DHA Advantage

  • Dr. Rhonda Patrick discusses the differences between different forms of DHA in terms of bioavailability and transport into different cells. She talks about why a specific type of DHA (DHA in phosphatidylcholine) is more readily transported into the brain because it forms DHA-lysophsophatidylcholine. Krill oil and salmon roe both have a slightly higher concentration of DHA-lysophosphatidylcholine. She also talks about astaxanthin, a carotenoid that is unique to krill oil, and has potent antioxidant activity and prevents the oxidation of DHA and EPA.

I do my videos like this too because otherwise the editing can take forever and very few subs it makes it feel like a waste of time. This video for example:
      ua-cam.com/video/ZJ1SntT6lg4/v-deo.html ,
which by the way is on health behaviour change, is 25mins and literally took me a week to edit and I tried to cram as much information in as possible so I literally speed read so those who did watch it and liked it watched it on 1/2 speed lol

My God! Your a machine!! How do retain so much info like your brain is a computer! I’m in awwwe of you! You are ridiculously knowledgeable. I now follow you and listen to your videos while I make my kids lunches etc. surprisingly I was already making a smoothie similar to the ones you suggest having had such a bad year or health last year, contracting salmonella, pneumonia and a serious flu I didn’t ever want to go down that path again! Well this year I have not been sick once.. touch wood.. lol.. but all the doc videos, health videos have opened my eyes, I feed my kids and I only healthy food and so rarely do they eat any sugar! Thanks for being so informative, I hope you reply, gosh I’d love to know all you know! How many years of study has it taken for you to be so knowledgeable, I’m guessing your whole life!! Simply amazing! :) Thank you Thank you!

I love coming back to videos as I learn more about the brain. I recently started taking Phosphatidylserine and talk about a boost in mental power, less ADHD symptoms and more focus. It also lowers cortisol during my long term fasts. Now I’m curious if I can take Krill oil and see similar effects or not since it also contains Phosphatidylserine.
    Thank you Rhonda!!!

Curious about your thoughts on this Rhonda
If an otherwise healthy person eats a can of wild caught sardines and a tablespoon of pollock roe about 3 times a week is there a real need to supplement?
There are obviously other benefits to eating Sardines as well including Calcium, nucleotides, minerals
I do this and feel it’s an inexpensive and convenient way to get optimal O’3s EPA DHA and Astaxanthin.
The cost effectiveness is key because I have more money left over to buy other healthy food like marrow and bone broth.

Will there be a side effects by taking 5-10g of Krill oil per day as a supplement? As the dha and epa are more bioavailable, there is a less grams per gram of omega 3, but are better. Question is toward total daily omega 3 dosage, 5-10g, or even more?
    Thank you very much :)

Wild Sockeye Salmon oil is rich in Astaxanthin if you can't afford Krill oil. It's still pricey, but cheaper than Krill with similar benefits.

there are so many fake krill oils out there, besides, you know very well that this oil can sit for months and sometimes years on the shelf or in a warehouse somewhere, you know this will oxide the oil and become rancid, so my question is: WHAT KRILL OIL SUPPLEMENT DO YOU BUY FOR YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY???

There are a lot of studies and meta analysis conducted that show that taking fish oil for over 4yrs reduces longevity. And many of these studies touting it's benefits are done over short periods of time.
While fish oil is necessary for human function it's highly prone to oxidative damage.
Have you read Chris Masterjohn's articles on this? Curious to see if you have and what you thought about it if you did.

    • @mmortal03
      @mmortal03 10 років тому +1

Dr. Patrick has discussed somewhere that she keeps her fish oil refrigerated, and that you can spot check your supply by opening a capsule and smell testing it to see if it is rancid (that crayon smell).

I get that - and beyond smelling your fish oil, anyone can request a certificate of analysis (COA) and look at the different values on it from the vendor. If the supplement vendor doesn't have a COA they should be avoided. But that doesn't change the fact that some studies have shown that prolonged usage of fish oil supplements is not beneficial and can actually be harmful to your health.

Clinical trials in nutrition are notoriously difficult to do well. I discuss this topic on JRE #502 around 1-hr36min. if you are interested in my take. Also see my video on the rebuttal to multivitamins are bad-I break down why understanding mechanism and context are so important to interpreting clinical data.
Yes, PUFAs are extremely prone to oxidation, need to be careful when supplementing. As far as fish oil goes, Nordic Naturals isolates their omega-3 fatty acids under nitrogen conditions (so no oxygen) so very little oxidative damage occurs. They are the best fish oil brand. They also re-esterify their omega-3 to triglyceride form.
I'll get into omega-3 benefits in another video but lower all-cause mortality has linked to omega-3 supplementation. That is about as long-term as it gets.

Mike Stone From the link:" None of these trials provided any evidence that healthy people benefit from taking fish oil or that doses higher than one gram of omega-3 fatty acids per day provide any benefit over smaller doses. The results of the DART 2 trial are particularly concerning because, like the results of the Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital Study, they suggest that high intakes of PUFAs may increase the risk of morbidity and mortality when consumed over the course of many years."

How about the problem of overfishing and the heavy metals/PCBs that fish contain? Fish get their Omega-3 from algae so why not eat algae in stead of fish or krill. Fish/krill simply can't keep up with our demand. Especially when it is claimed by some that fish oil is healthy. It takes 3 herrings to make one pill... Let's cut out the middleman and eat algae

I have read that polyunsaturated fats make cells more "waterish" and decrease optimal production of ATP and do not let testosterone get fully optimally generated and are more unstable than saturated fats, thus it meaning that fish oil is a polyunsaturated fat too.

Bart Kay has a video on algae like fish oil it is loaded with toxins . ..these toxins are not to be taken lightly...mercury/pcb/aldehydes etc. any of these will fuck you up. jack kruse will not take fish oil supplements because they are rancid...he states that the fish oil has to be processed in refregerated enviroment...shipped in a cold enviroment....stored in cold...
so the bottom line leave the shit alone...eat sardines.
