  • A look at my 2006 PowerBook G4, watching UA-cam videos on it using the WebKit browser, and editing 60fps video using iMovie HD and JES Deinterlacer. it's still surprisingly useful if you have enough patience!

TenFourFox is the best web browser for the PowerPc platform. It is actually just a modern version of Firefox designed for PowerPc G3, G4 and G5 processors.

@@onometre I have a G4 iBook, the fastest 12" model with max RAM. TenFourFox is pretty slow, sometimes unusably so, depending on the website. There are sone things you can do to optimize it that do make a noticeable difference, like installing NoScript to limit JavaScript execution, but it only helps to an extent.
My iBook G4 is running OS X 10.4.11, so unfortunately Leopard Webkit is not an option without updating it to 10.5.8.

@@vwestlife You can give AuroraFox a shot, its also a port of firefox, but not quite that up to date, but still very useable on most websites, and the benefit of using AuroraFox instead of TenFourFox is the speed! I own a 2004 1,33ghz powerbook g4, and this browser is the perfect balance for compatibility/speed, if you need to visit a site that Aurora can't handle, sure, open it in TenFourFox, but most websites will work with it, some websites may have rendering issues, but are still fully useable! Hope this can help! I have a sweet collection of browsers on my PB g4, i have webkit, TenFourFox, AuroraFox (obviously XD), Camino G4, Opera 10.63, SeaMonkey, Shiira, Roccat, Stainless and iCab on my machine :p (just to tinker around, to see what this machine can still do in 2020)

My first computer was a dual-processor powermac g4 quicksilver. I still own it, and recently used leopard assist to get it up to 10.5.8, though it took downloading about four different leopard discs online before I found one it would install from. Even with leopard and the modified WebKit browser it really isn’t usable online today. After watching this video I think might try video editing on it just for the fun of it.

While my new motherboard is shipped off for warranty service due to a faulty BIOS chipset, I'm editing on an old HP Probook6470b. It is newer than your PowerBook G4, but still pretty painful to edit HD with. I found that if I allow my software to make low resolution proxy files, it runs a little smoother. I'm not familiar enough with iMovie to know if it uses proxy files. I will be happy to get my main PC back in running order.

iMovie HD (6.x) converts all standard-definition video to DV and all HD video to HDV. But of course if you use a camcorder that records in these formats natively, there is no conversion necessary.

I was a little confused a5t first when you showed off the WebKit browser as I know only of the WebKit rendering engine that Safari is based on but I think I’ve cleared up my confusion. Some of you may know that WebKit is also the name of the rendering engine used in the Safari browser and is the basis for the Chrome browser engine, which became a fork of WebKit. So it appears that someone has taken the open source WebKit engine and built interface around it that runs on PowerPC in order to give it some modern features, a5 least ones compatible with the Leopards OS. Sort of like how someone forked the Firefox Browser into TenFourFox, a version of Firefox that still runs on PowerPC Macs.

    • @TimurTripp2
      @TimurTripp2 5 років тому

Leopard Webkit is Safari 5 modified to use a newer version of the Webkit engine compiled for PowerPC. So, the page rendering engine (Webkit) is new, the browser Is the same old Safari 5 from OS X Leopard.
WIth TenFourFox, both the engine and browser are new.

For anyone watching this that is too young to remember when Apple still provided CD/DVD writer drives on there computers, the slot on the front referred to as a SuperDrive in the vid was a Apple brand name for a type of optical drive offered on some Apple computers starting with the PowerMac G4 in 2001. A slot-loading version first appeared as an upgrade option on the late 2002 PowerBook G4 before becoming standard on the PowerBook Pro laptops. The SuperDrive was called that by Apple because it could read and write to both CD/CD-ROM and DVD/DVD-ROM discs. Before then they had the combo drive which could both read and write CD/CD-ROM but could only read DVD/DVD-ROM (but not write). The superdrives used on laptops where exclusively slot loading meaning you simply inserted the disc in to the slot and drive grabbed ahold of the disc and pulled it in. before the appearance of the slot loading optical drives, laptops typically used a modified version of the tray loading drive, where unlike on desktop computers, the tray does not complete eject but rather is spring loaded and pops out a short distance when you pressed a button on the front of the tray. and you then had to pull it fully out yourself. To close it you push it back in until the drive latches closed. You might still see slot loading optical drives on some car stereo/infotainment systems, especially older models (unless they use a multi-changer system in the trunk) but they have largely vanished from as default options on laptops and computers, except as maybe an optional add-on for some desktop system. The few Win PC computers still offering optical drives as an option are typically use a tray loading drive.

JES Deinterlacer works best with the settings I showed: "Remove Jaggies" enabled, Adaptive enabled (on by default with Both Fields for 60 fps), and Local not enabled. Turning on Local mode does give you sharper video, but either causes ghosting during fast motion (with "Remove Jaggies" not enabled) or causes some interlacing artifacts to remain visible during slight motion (with "Remove Jaggies" enabled).

Part of the reason they got rid of it was people wrapping the cable too tightly and the cable would tear open.

Also worth noting that this PowerBook is not capable of viewing the Reiwa Era, which started in Spring 2019 due to Japan's imperial transition. Many older OS's will view 2020 as Heisei 32 rather than Reiwa 2. I heard from my friend in Japan that on 68K era Macs, 2020 is Heisei -68, or in other words, 1920.

Those power supply cord retaining clips we're nice however they tend to make the whole thing take up more space than just nicely looping and Velcro tying the cable. Plus every person I saw use them wrap the cord so tight that it guaranteed they were gonna break and it didn't help that they use aluminum wire in their power cords. The strain relief is there to relieve strain but if you're yanking it it's not able to do it's job.

I bought this 10 year old laptop at a flee market in a really battered state with no hard drive, no charger, no super drive and no battery but screen and keyboard in good condition.I tried to download the mac osx version for this laptop but I got fobbed off by apple. Lubuntu is easy to install and works just great. I very much enjoyed your video.

These machines came with GIGABIT ethernet. Editing DV video wasn't much of a challenge for these machines as it was a well optimized intermediate codec that was over a decade old at that point.
No offense, but the results from that JES deinterlacer are pretty subpar compared to modern deinterlacing solutions.

iMovie HD's built-in deinterlacing is actually just fine, if you're OK with 30fps. Until I started caring about 60fps, it produced better-quality results than the de-interlacing in any other video editor I tried except Serif MoviePlus. I used it for many of my videos from mid-2011 to mid-2015.

the 1.42GHz G4 in my mid-2005 14" iBook is an absolute leg cooker. can't image what a 1.67GHz G4 is like. I use TenFourFox with an old version of uBlock Origin (available in the archive of legacy Firefox addons in the TenFourFox github) on my iBook, and it's actually not too bad browsing the web, all things considered. even got it running OS9 (in dual boot with 10.4.11!), albeit with no audio and a basically unusable trackpad.
the dual-G5 mac pro I used at work many years ago functioned pretty well as a space heater in the winter.

Pretty abysmal that even a decently standard definition video from the good ol UXWBill it still stutters. Could just be UA-cam. Edit: ok for 360p, not that the “millennial-standard 4K definition” really matters for me and especially the uploader himself
And 2005 was around the last time where webcams on laptops were like an optional feature. Now companies would set it as a “compulsory” feature. And do be aware of the potential for the dreaded screen “notch” that we may or already have on portable PCs
