ive read about what will happen to the solar system when the sun becomes a red giant, the orbits of planets will change because the sun will lose about 1/3 of its mass and that's why scientists debate on if the earth will be swallowed by the sun or not. they think its diameter will cover earth's current orbit but they also think earth may have a larger orbit due to the loss of mass in the sun.

The weird thing is that stellar evolution is similar to alchemical magnum opus:
    Star dies-Nigredo
    New star starts to form-Albedo
Star becomes a main sequence star-Citrinitas
    Stars becomes a Red Giant-Rubedo
This means that supernovas are esentially philosopher stones

Whate dwarfs are around 100000°C, and they are extremely dense. They will be around half of its former mass, and will be around the size of Earth.
Black Dwarfs are the reminants of the white dwarf that are all burnt. It takes long to burn off all of it. We dont have any black dwarfs yet, because our universe isn't old enough.

Actually the Sun is going to be a red giant twice! After it's Red Giant Branch Phase, it goes into the Horizontal Branch phase (on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram) where it shrinks down again while it's burning helium, then it swells again during the Asymptotic Giant Branch phase. The Sun is a nut. :)

Sun was born. And there was 3 rocky planets. Then jupiter joined and there was the asteroid belt. Jupiter make the gravity to make the rocky planets hit each other. And some goes inside the sun. The first was mercury so small, and then venus and earth. Then mars. Then I think saturn, uranus and neptune joined.
Blocko (known as life noggin) said there was 3 rocky planets and jupiter joined. I think that happens.

With the merger of two neutron stars being observed the prevailing theory now is that elements more complex than iron were created from neutron star collisions, and they put the age the collision occured 80 million years before the birth of the solar system. Thus the birth of the sun may also involved the chance nearby collision of two neutron stars.
We are made of Neutron star stuff as well as supernovae now

I have often wondered about this topic....people don't usually give much thought to the origin of our elements other than the primordial hydrogen, Helium, Lithium. What I would like to know, is, would it be possible to track backwards using stellar cartography to find the actual stellar remnant that was responsible for giving us the building blocks for our lives and our solar system ? As Anton says, all the heavier elements that make up our bodies came from the destruction of another very massive star..there is something truly beyond words happening in that process...the most violent act of destruction and chaos that is the seed for life, and eventually entities that can appreciate the very act itself.....it is in effect , the universe awakening to realize itself.....

"As a matter of fact things like iron are only created in a supernova."
That is not fully correct. Iron is created in the core of the star before it dies. However, the star can't generate heavier elements than iron resulting in it's death (Because there is no more fuel to burn to keep up with it's weight.). If the star is big enough it goes supernova and in this explosion heavier elements are created.

I’m trying to understand this stuff more because I’m extremely fascinated. So a star actually starts with rock getting clumped to the point it becomes so big the pressure inside creates hydrogen and helium fusion? I thought it was just clouds of hydrogen getting compressed to the point fusion starts.

so why did Anton said iron is created in supernova? i do know that some metrials are being created while the supernova occures but from what i know iron may not be one of them, just asking.

    • @castrator8057

bar lupo because the only way to get the iron is from the super nova, you can't extract it from within the star. Or he just made a mistake.

Iron is actually created in the core of a star. It is the heaviest element that can be fused in the star. Iron can be fused further, however it is energy absorbing as opposed to energy creating. Therefore, when enough iron accumulates in the core of a star, fusion stops and gravity wins the fusion/gravity war - resulting in a type II supernova. Elements heavier than iron are created in the supernova event.

Wait, I thought that stars made all elements up to iron; iron then short-circuits the fusion process, and Hydrogen through iron can be released through regular nova. Everything heavier than iron is created in supernova in the outer layers of massive stars, through the force of the star ripping itself apart.
Has the model / leading theory changed?
