I appreciate your education series Keith and this was well worth the watch. I personally do not use a wrist brace but I see their worth for people that do. Whether it's because of an injury, comfort or you just want to wear one. I do notice that for strokers I see they have a better chance for repeatability. Well done sir!
As a user of that same C4 brace, I can say that what it gives me over a more traditional (now days) cupped to uncupped release is consistency. I can do okay without it but I’m still a stroker, and the yo-yo is hard for me to master at my age. The brace allows me to have the same feeling every time I let the ball go (similar to your 45 degree example). Love your channel - Keep up the great work, guys. 👍🏼
This is by far the best video I have seen on wrist brace. Broke my wrist about ten years ago and had to have a titanium plate put in to hold it in place. I have been wearing brace since and have worn the leather ones and current have the Robby’s three on. Have been struggling so bad lately with interchangeables and not getting the right fit. Pso drills them and I am confident he is drilling them right but still struggling. Hopefully this video can get me to the forty five degree because right now thumb is at nine o clock at release
I hope that works for you. Make sure you are getting the thumb out first with strong fingers. That will help as well. Good luck. Let me know how it works.
Thanks for the tip about the elbow. I'll have to practise that. BTW, I started using a wrist device a few weeks ago to try to get used to the right position for my wrist on release (cos without the device, I tended to go mainly up the back of the ball). It wasn't quite end over end (the track was just to left of the thumb and ring finger holes), but it tended to roll early.. The device I bought has a setting for lateral adjustment (left or right) and I lock that in to give the ball a little more tilt than I tend to do without the device. But I disovered a few days ago after using my GoPro while bowling on Tuesday, that I have two other problems that need to be addressed first. 1. My swing. In making sure I keep my hand behind the ball through the swing, the ball is not swinging straight back and forward again. Instead, my hand takes the ball a little to my right, which means when it swings back down, it goes a little to be my left. 2. My right foot at release is in the air behind me (instead of being extended to the left). I'm sure that's affecting my balance at release, which could be why, at times, I miss my target at the arrows.
On the tilt thing, I would recommend practicing some no step and 1-step drills where you focus on that without the brace. One thing that helps me is when you reach the peak of you backswing, think about bringing your knuckles in and brushing your left calf. That can help you get that loaded position you are taking about. 1-step drills can also help to work on your setting plane. As for your trail leg, I lift it also. It isn't behind me but it's out to side, but still in the air. I am currently working on keeping it down for balance but it's not the end of the world. I would focus on the other things first and don't worry about the trail leg until you feel good about the release. I wish you best.
@@baldbrothersbowling Thanks for taking the time leave that detailed reply. I'll try it during practice. But league starts day after tomorrow (first time taking part since I started bowling five months ago), so I may still decide to wear the brace Wednesday night. I'll keep practising without the brace, so hopefully soon I'll be able to get better tilt without the brace.
@@baldbrothersbowling I had to come back and leave this comment - When I practised on Monday, I initially did so with the wrist support. But I decided to remove it and bowl two games. The first couple of throws felt awkward, I dropped the ball instead of rolling it cleanly. But after that, it felt good. I didn't shoot video, so I can't play it back and measure, but I think my rev rate was definitely higher without the support. Ball speed was also higher. I'm planning to ditch the support for the next two practice sessions and for league next week.
The only ones that I have been able to use successfully are the Storm Power Glove Plus and the basic Brunswick wrist brace (nothing on the hand). I wish I could find the wrist part of the Storm Power Glove Plus minus the glove portion. Although it greatly helps revs.
First off I love your content and it’s been helping me out a lot. I wear this exact brace mainly because I have the weak wrist but also I have pain in my wrist as well.(I’m rt handed too.)…. Sometimes I find myself not getting the proper release I need with it. Granted I’ve used this now for almost 3 years since I was able to get back into bowling in 2021. I’ve gotten a lot better and a lot more consistent with it. Would there be a possible way you could do another video on it explaining more in depth how I can keep my hand at the 45 degree angle more consistently?? Also I was wondering if you could talk about the rotate option on the brace where you lock it in at it rotates left/right. Could you talk more about that as well?? I’ve experimented with this but havnt really found answers to what this is for so I don’t use this option a lot without knowing how it would help.. I notice as you mentioned when I do this I’m a lot more consistent but also noticed my hand position isn’t in this position more times than not and it looks more like a spin than anything. Really love the content, been helping a lot!!
I had a wrist injury. Then I started to use it as a crutch. I used the brace for years never did rehab then drop down from 15 pounds bowling ball to 14 pounds. I finally gradually stop using the brace and started to do wrist curls with a dumbbell to build up strength in my wrist until I no longer need the brace. What I’ve learned from using the brace it restricts you. It never makes you feel comfortable.
Thanks bald guy...I have that same wrist brace as well...I just don't use it.. lol...I use the pro release..and I've been tring so many hand positions...which prolly impossible...thanks..great video
I'm 70 and have played around with those things as I've gotten older. You get the idea in your head as you age that you might need the help. In my case I don't need one. It actually feels more difficult with the brace than without it. Also, ball fit screams at me whenever I put one on. That brings up my only question: If a person was going to start using a wrist brace, should their hand be measured wearing the brace? Nobody talks about ball fit but anytime I've put one on my hand, my fit no longer felt right.
That's something I have never thought of. The robo arms I would thing shouldn't impact fit, but the kind with the metal or plastic in the palm, I could see this. Probably not a bad idea if someone wears one to talk with their PSO and see. Thanks for the comment.
@@baldbrothersbowling I have very thin wrists and with age less muscle. I have worked at strengthening them but it has not helped. Therefore my wrist has a lot of side to side wobble.
Why doesn’t it occur to these brace makers to have an option to allow some wrist movement from cupping to uncupping but not bending back more than wanted. Luckily I broke a brace into doing just that.
If you are having wrist pain, it COULD be from trying to curl the ball to keep it from breaking back, which could be a thumb fit issue. If you haven't already, go back and watch my thumb fit video and make sure you are hinging at the base of the thumb, not the knuckle. Then, you also need to make sure you are letting gravity take your arm back and forth. If you do this well and have a snug thumb, the pressure will be more on the thumb and not the wrist. This MIGHT help alleviate the pain. Also, I have arthritis and I do tape my wrist to help prevent inflammation. If you don't tape it, try that also. Let me know how that goes.
@baldbrothersbowling thank you for all the information. I think the problem is I bowl no thumb one hand. I think having to keep my hand curled the entire time might be causing the pain. I might switch to bowl with thumb or 2 handed
@@YoPhocFaysah I see. Do you rest the ball on your forearm like Tom Daugherty? If not, you could try that. Could alleviate some weight. If you do, try 2 handed. Also notice how Tom loads his wrist. It isn't just cupped but cocked to the inside of the ball a little. That is a little more of a relaxed position.
@baldbrothersbowling thank you so much. I have it completely cupped and resting on my forearm during my stance. I'll try that technique. I'm hoping to stay in this sport for a while. So anything that could prevent issues going forward, I'll try. Thank you again
