6-16-2020: Tony, I recently bought a used store mannequin and it has been GREAT....especially during these crazy covid times....because the "light tests" have continued w/ no problems. No social distance issues, and she always knows her Left from her Right. However, she's not much for on-location stuff (doesn't wanna get wet)....but for studio based work, it's been an invaluable tool. And I don't have to tidy up BEFORE a shoot anymore....

Wow Tony, this is one of the most clear instructional videos I've seen for the Godox 600 and the transmitter! Thank you so much for this video! Thanks to you, I've learned how to use it! Keep up the good work. Will have to look into purchasing your book!

Terrific tutorial on some amazing value products. Thank you! There is another little quirk that may prevent triggering between the transmitters and receivers. If the transmitter is too close to the receiver, they won't work. So, keep them at least 2 feet apart. BTW, this little nugget of information is actually buried in the instruction sheet.

Tony, thanks for the hard work in putting together this excellent explanation. I noticed in your reply to Rob Sigler Photography below, you mentioned that "...the triggers were working great with my Fuji in the studio, but I brought them on location and needed HSS and they completely failed". This is another one of those Fuji gotcha things. I found that in order to set HSS in the Godox/Adorama system, the setting MUST be made in the CAMERA MENU (and not on the flash or trigger). For example, on an X-T2, go to Flash Function Setting > Sync. and select FP (same as HSS). With the R2ProF trigger, when you make the FP selection in the camera menu you will see the H symbol (for HSS) appear next to the battery symbol on the top line of the trigger's screen.
Note this oddity: the HSS function will time out (on the trigger) after several minutes. If this should happen to you, go back to the camera menu's Flash Function Setting > Sync where the the FP is still shown as selected, and move that setting to any other setting (Front, Rear) and then back to FP. Doing this will re-establish the FP setting on the camera and also restore the H symbol on the attached trigger. I do not know whether this procedure applies to Canon, Nikon, etc. Hope this helps some.

For the firmware update, Adorama is coming out with a new version for them of the xpro. Adorama uses the godox equivalent called Flashpoint xplor. The new Adorama Flashpoint version xpro 2 is supposedly Apple compatible too {this transmitter has extra buttons on the right hand side}.

I just installed the Godox E1 updater and drivers on windows 10 -64bit operating system and did the upgrade of my X1T without having to edit the system Bios, and using the command prompt steps. Note I did get the warning message from within Windows, but I told it to install anyway.

    Thorough video. Thanks.
One thing I think you might have gotten wrong is the reasoning for turning off the wireless flash control on the strobe. Maybe it will also work if you are using another brand controller like you said, but I think for many that won't be the main reason. The main reason for many is that is what you need to do it you are using the old Godox triggers (FT-16). These are the ones where the receiver is a small USB plug that you insert into the flash. I am guessing that the new Pro model doesn't have the USB input, so that is why you don't have the option to turn the controller off. This is actually something that I, as a Pentax user, takes advantage of, because using the old transmitter and receiver on top of a Cactus V6ii transmitter is the only way for me to get HSS or of my AD600 and AD200.
Not super important for most of your viewers, but it is for Pentax users.
Also, and I'm not sure why this was the case, but I didn't have to jump through all the hope to do firmware upgrades on my Windows 10/64 bit computer. For me, it was unzip install and run. No more difficult that work any other firmware upgrade. Not sure why I was so lucky.
It would be nice though if I didn't need to install the G1 and the G2 programs rather than a single updater.

  • @thephotodl4455

I'm surprised nobody has commented on this yet. You don't need to go through such hoops to install unsigned drivers. In Windows 10 go to the settings applet (start -> cogs) -> update & security -> recovery -> advanced startup -> troubleshoot -> advanced options -> startup settings -> press 7 or F7 to disable driver signature enforcement. It will disable signed driver enforcement ony for that boot session. After a reboot the setting is undone. no need to disable secure boot in the UEFI or muck with bcdedit which may or may not work anymore.

A few other observations on firmware updates. 1) if you go to the Adorama FlashPoint firmware update page, they've repackaged the firmware utilities as self extracting .exe files and the firmware updates as .zip files that Windows can un-compress without the need to install 7-Zip or other utility that supports .rar. The firmware files are exactly the same. 2) Even the AA battery devices will sometimes not connect properly to your computer if you don't remove the battery first. 3) Cheaper USB cables might not work. Try using one that came from a name brand device like your cell phone. 4) Plug the USB cable directly from the device to be updated to the USB port in the computer running the utility. It most likely will not work through a USB hub. 5) To be sure the device is being seen and communicating properly with your computer before starting the flash utility, open Windows device manager, under USB devices make sure you see a Godox USB device listed.
Battery design between the AD600 and the AD600 Pro is very different. The AD600's 11.1VDC Li-Ion battery will give you over 600 full power flashes on a single charge with a (full power) recycle time of about 2.5 seconds. The AD600 Pro's 28.8VDC battery pack will give you very fast (just under 1 second) full power recycle times, but only provides ~320 full power flashes per charge in my controlled tests.
Great job, Tony. I would add one word about heat and the modeling lights. The AD600's 10 Watt modeling light will turn off after 30 minutes of use to keep the LED control circuit from overheating. It will not come back on for a few minutes until the control board is cool - very frustrating for the type of restricted light photography I do. The AD600 PRO 38 Watt modeling light will also turn off after 30 minutes but can be turned back on immediately because of better cooling fan and sink design.

So brands like Xplorer, FlashPoint, Neewer and others that sell the same model AD600 (GODOX) use the same firmware? Can I download the latest version of the AD600 firmware from the GODOX website and install it on my Neewer 600?

    • @ImagesbyDesign
      @ImagesbyDesign 6 років тому

Yep. If you're in the US I'd recommend the Adorama Flashpoint firmware page, as they're repackaged the utilities as self extracting archives (no RAR decoder needed) and the images are exactly the same.

Very useful tutorial, Tony is right the instructions are lacking some detail, most of the controls are very intuitive but I found this tutorial very useful in turning off the modeling light and a few other tips. I have two Paul Buff's einstein e640's but I don't always want to overpower the sun at f16 to f22. So I purchased the Godox 600 mainly for the highspeed sync. A lot of times I might want to use a soft box to light the subject and still have a nice blurred background using around f5.

  • @milesgommeimages

Godox now has a G3 version for Mac OS. There is also a X2T with the group controls similar to the XPro controller. ONLY the X1T has the single pin function as therefore is useful as a backup when using other camera makes. The XPro controller has the TCM function. This is very useful if you want to use manual but don’t have a light meter to hand. A video for other users of this function would be great. DM me for ideas on this video. The X1 receivers are also very useful for when you want to use a mix of your camera manufacturers speed lights and Godox equipment from one controller. You can even use (with the relevant receiver) another brand of speedlight I.e. Canon with a Nikon camera. So a Canon speedlight on a X1C will fire and be controlled from a Nikon Camera with a X1T N controller!!! Useful when you have a mixture of speedlights or have borrowed one from a friend.

I very much appreciate the work you put into this tutorial. You've helped me immensely. Love the AD600B and Canon X1T units - hate the idea of having to upgrade the firmware though. There's a good chance I would have bought a different system (than Godox) if I knew ahead of time about the difficulty with the firmware updates. But, it's too late now. Thanks again for the tutorial.

Thanks so much for this Tony! I bought a TT-685S speedlight with an X1T transmitter over the summer. I fired the flash with the transmitter once, and then it completely stopped working so I've just been using on camera flash ever since. The troubleshooting portion of this video was very helpful in confirming that the problem is with the transmitter. I'll try doing a firmware update (it's on V14) to see if that fixes it. Thanks for the step by step walkthrough!

Hmmm, updated the firmware on both the flash and the transmitter and the test button still doesn't fire the flash. I made sure they're both set to the same channel and that the speedlight is on the wireless mode. Looks like I'll be filing a return tonight...

I was surprised to find out it was GodOx too. I speak (and read and write) a little Japanese, and the Japanese got their Kanji from china. Kanji actually means, Chinese letters. Anyway, I was looking at some Godox documentation once and noticed the following characters: 神牛. 神 is the character for God and 牛 is the character for cow or ox. So the name really is what is sounds like, God Ox.

    • @GranthamAtHome
      @GranthamAtHome 6 років тому +1

Never thought I'd have to do a firmware update on a strobe... but then again this is 2018.
One thing to point out about the X1T-F trigger for Fuji: if for some reason you're not getting TTL or HSS with this trigger make sure to push the trigger all the way into the shoe. I've noticed at times I'd think it was connected and it would fire fine up to my sync speed but would fail after that. I think it's something about the plastic they use on the bottom of the trigger that's a bit too thick and you have to give it a bit more 'oomph' to make sure all the pins connect.

Hi Tony, I saw at about 8:50, you suggest that if you are trying to capture motion, like a dancer or runner, you suggested to down in shutter speed to where HSS does NOT come into play...so around 1/250 or 1/200 or slower. However...if you are trying to capture fast motion, won't that allow blur into the shot due to the slow shutter speed ?

Hey Tony, Love your videos...keep up the great work! Quick question, what light stand were you using in this video and do you have any recommendations for light stands that work well in outdoor/environmental portraiture? I use an AD200 in a bowens mount for that mostly because it's more portable.

Good stuff Tony - you cover detail for most every circumstance, camera and trigger types. I learned that you can change the min. flash on the small trigger from 1/128 to 1/256. But my flash unit (V860ii c) won’t go past 1/128 ??

Great walkthrough, Tony. I wish I had your firmware update tutorial before I bricked my X1-T about 6 months ago while trying to update from Windows 10. Luckily Adorama took pity on me and swapped it out with an updated one. Love the Godox/Flashpoint hardware, but the software is total junk. Thankfully you almost never need to update these devices.

Hello 👋🏾 what’s the name of that sand bag you were using that wraps around the base of the light stand

You could make a video about the big differences between Pro Photo 1Bx and the AD600 Pro.
I saw some studies and technical reviews, where the AD600 Pro wins in some cases and loses in others and ends up being a better option due to the cost benefit and because the Pro Photo 1Bx does not have a difference that justifies the price.
I would like to see an analysis of vcs with test shoots in the same environment, changing only the light.

I was hoping you would show us how to use the TCM function on the X Pro trigger, the manual and operating instructions don't cover that function. I hope you will address this in some future video. Thank you

Hi Tony we can control the modeling lamp with x1 trigger as well. We need to double press the "ch/ok" button to switch it on and off.
I was getting a hard time to capture fast moving subject with it in hss.
Thank you for all of the information you shared. Would appreciate it if you could help with a suggestion for a flash with x1 trigger to capture movements in hss.
    I am confused with v860 and v685

Can someone tell what the startup sequence is for the Godox combination:
Nikon D7200 with Godox AD600B and the Godox XT1.
What should be turned on first, the camera, AD600B or the XT-1, in what sequence?
    Thank You!
