From Wikipedia: The December 31 game started at 8 PM EST rather than 9 PM EST to allow New Year's Rockin' Eve to air as normal. The Superdome became the first and remains the only, stadium to host both the MNF opener and finale in the same season. Besides the New Orleans Saints, the only other teams to have played in both the MNF opener and finale in the same season have been the San Francisco 49ers in 1977, 1991, and 1994; the San Diego Chargers in 1981; the Dallas Cowboys in 1982, 1983, 1984, and 1995; and the Green Bay Packers in 2008. However, at least one of the games played by each of those other teams was on the road.
This game was a huge relief for all the die-hard fans. Would love to know what the decibel level was that night. Even though it was almost 20 years later when they did get the big win everyone was waiting for, Mr. Benson was probably as happy in '10 as he was back in '90. The Quarter had to have been hard rockin' that night, and NOPD was probably busier than they would have expected.
I remember watching this game with my family. We went crazy when the Morten Andersen hit the winning field goal. The offense and secondary weren't very good in those days otherwise the Saints might won a Super Bowl or had longer playoff runs. I remember hoping the Saints could get it done in Chicago but the Bears defense and the anemic Saints offense ended my hopes. There was a TD called back in that game that could have made a difference.
Yeah I remember watching that bears game..thinking if the Saints team had the “Dome Patrol” defense of the 90’s and Sean Payton’s offense with Brees we could’ve easily had multiple super bowl championships.Funny thing is when I was younger I didn’t really root for or care for the Saints. But my mother and family where die hard Saints fans…and eventually I became such. And I was born in New Orleans. I’m glad I came around. They had some interesting games..that’s for sure.I’m just glad my mother and grandma got to see them win in 2009-10 the big one “Black and Gold in the Super Bowl! ⚜️
I went to this game, I fell on the ground when the kick was blocked lol! I remember the day before we were actually rooting for the Falcons to beat the Cowboys. The very next year we were rooting for the Cowboys to beat the Falcons so we could win our first division title.
Posting this the night before game for the ‘18 nfc title. Back in ‘90 it was n.o. who needed to win to make the playoffs. Tmrrw is the highest level matchup ever btwn these 2 franchises where the winner, whether lar or n.o., makes the sb.
I'm a Ram's fan figured Saints are gonna kill Patriots, nfl gave a bad call obviously giving Brady another super bowl opportunity in 18 season scripted results,🤔✌️😔 fan of good clean competition and consistent refereeing of a game..
2:17:27 Dan Dierdorf: You really have to sympathize with the Dallas Cowboys... No, Dan, you really don't. Even counting them freshly being eliminated from the 1990 playoffs as well as the four-year playoff drought that preceded it, they still had 18 playoff appearances in 25 years. During basically the same time frame where the Cowboys went to the playoffs 17 times in 18 years, the Saints endured the longest playoff drought in the combined histories of the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL, 20 years. On top of that, when they finally broke through and had their first winning season ever at 12-3 in 1987, they got stuck as a wildcard even though their record would've won any of the other five divisions in the league, untied, but they had the misfortune of playing in the same division as the 13-2 49ers. Then they got their doors blown off in their first playoff game by an 8-7 team in their own house. The next year they got fortunate enough to have just their second winning season ever and tied for the division lead in the final standings just to lose a three-team tiebreaker and be the only one of those three teams to miss the playoffs. The next season they had their third straight winning season and missed the playoffs at 9-7. So if any team deserved sympathy, it was the Saints. In reality, sympathy shouldn't have even been discussed at that point. They should've been congratulating the Saints for clawing their way out of a 2-5 start which in most cases is a sure-fire nail in the coffin for a team's playoff chances, especially the Saints of old.
This game wasn’t played on a Monday, it was played on a Tuesday, so it could be played on Dec 31st. It was a huge game. If the Saints won, they clinched a playoff berth. If they lost, the 7-9 Cowboys would clinch.
It was actually a Monday night, it started an hour earlier at 8 PM ET instead of the usual 9 PM ET to accommodate the Dick Clark's Rock N Eve. However the rest of the comment was correct. Cowboys were that close to being the first 7-9 to clinch, but Saints made sure that didn't happen. We wouldn't see the first 7-9 team make the playoffs until 20 years later when Seahawks did it. Ironically the Seahawks beat the Rams to clinch the NFC West and a week later they beat the Saints in the Wildcard card in the famous Beast Quake run.
@@petepyeatt6909 The one thing I did find interesting was actually playing a MNF game on New Years Eve. I would've thought maybe they would've played it on a Saturday like they did the week before to avoid playing on Christmas Eve or scrapped it altogether.
A perfect way to end 1990 for the New Orleans Saints is for Morten Andersen to hit the game-winning field goal less than 2 hours before New Orleans can ring in 1991.
The 1990 Rams had a horrible season but still had a lot of the same players from their successful teams from the 80s - the veterans did themselves proud in this game by playing like it was a playoff game despite having nothing to play for and making the Saints earn every bit of it.
Fun fact; if New Orleans has lost this game, the Dallas Cowboys, who had finished with a 7-9-0 record, would’ve been the #6 seed in the playoffs that year... yeah, the NFC was that top-heavy. SF 14-2-0 NYG 13-3-0 CHI 11-5-0 PHI 10-6-0 WAS 10-6-0 NO 8-8-0 Then there was 7-9-0 Dallas, followed by 6-10 Tampa, Green Bay, Minnesota, & Detroit, then 5-11 AZ, LA, & ATL.
Interesting to note that 1990 was the first year with 6 playoff teams per conference (expanded from 5 in 1989). I wonder if a 7-9 team qualified in the first year, if there would have been such an outcry against it that the league may have considered returning to 5 playoff teams.
i think the owner of rams made plans to win it in 1999 ...joshua was going to san francisco so the 49ers would be the winners plus oakland haveing a team...their ws a joshua and a owner who planned to win in 1980s then move to st louis their were also team who moved to areas clean the areas up then would move to another area so os angeles and st louis were known to have trouble
evrerybody needs to win some teams need to tak breaks so othr could win san francisco was becuas i moveing their ..so the rams who won in the 70s won in the 80s will now take a break if you watch the footage baltimore colts never left are colts moved we saw are future we couldnt change are future now the future is here so you can move around let vrybody win let all the fans feel good until we remember how to make it even when everything was even .........i dont know how we did it but the game ws even everybody had a chance maybe haveing 4 superbowls in on eyear so you speed up the winning feelings process thak you new orleans for jim wilks just in case i need people to see the past is trying to remind you how many wilks are in the football legue played in italy

That digital clockmin New Orleans had taller, skinnier , digits than everywhere else! You could always tell they were in New Orleans with that clock
I tend to listen to old NFL games to help me fall asleep at night, but this one was far too entertaining. Note: I'm writing this comment at 1:47 A.M.
Eric Martin was clutch for so many years for the Saints.
Never got his due.
And the Saints never had another wide receiver to match up with him.

The old NFC west division Saints, Rams, 49ers, & Falcons
Yep, a lot of people forget the Seahawks were in the AFC west back then too

Yes it was a blocked fg for a td, I think the Saints were lined up in the neutral zone.

The Saints linebackers were so good all four should've went to pro bowl .

I loved it!! We broke the cowboys hearts!!
this game was recorded in great quality..I miss this kind of football but why did the players wear such big and baggy jerseys ?! 😂
The 1990 Rams had a horrible season but still had a lot of the same players from their successful teams from the 80s - the veterans did themselves proud in this game by playing like it was a playoff game despite having nothing to play for and making the Saints earn every bit of it.
Dome Patrol Baby. And could you imagine if Sean Payton former head coach of the Saints could do with a defense like that.

AFC was just as top heavy! Bills13-3 Raiders 12-4 Dolphins 12-4 Cheifs 11-5 Bengals 10-6 Oilers 9-7
Jill Conner Bengals were 9-7 that year. The AFC central was garbage that year.

Trainking922 i believe the previous season in 1989 the NFC had a 10-6 team that didn't make the playoffs i believe it was the N.Y. Giants
Keeps a higher competitor level
It's amazing how successful these Saints were when Walsh sucked so badly.
Rest in ☮️ Frank Gilford.
Never blame the head coach of the Saints head coach in the 90s.
NFC West was a great division in the 80s and 90s.
Both the Rams and Saints had long time offensive tacklers.
