How To Use This High Current Motor Driver | HW-039 or BTS7960B Motor Driver

  • Taking a look at these neat little motor driver modules, the HW-039, which uses two of the BTS7960B half bridge drivers. This module claims to be able to be provide a peak current of 43 amps, and although I don't have the means to test it at the moment - the beefy heatsink makes me hopeful.

    This is the best demo of this board. I could not figure out what all the pins did from other youtubes. Now it makes sense. Thanks SUBSCRIBED. PS: I bought these to run the 555 DC motors with a built in Hell Effect encoder on the back. I have not figured out how to integrate the encoder to say an arduino. Thats.

    Brilliant thanks for the explainer! I'm currently trying to design a control box for an electronic parking brake. Thinking of use two of these, plus 2 ACS712 for current sensing.
    Simple, effective explanation with visuals. Couldn't ask for anything better.

      I was thinking the exact same thing. I did an electric park brake conversion on my 4runner and would like to control them using arduino and I think these will work perfectly. Each park brake motor pulls about 30amps max so I think two of these will work perfect and give me individual control left and right

    That’s some good info!
    I’m using one of these to control the trim actuator on my airplane and was wondering if I could use 2 momentary switches to control up/down without worrying about accidentally hitting both and damaging the bridge, so you just answered that question when you turned both switches on simultaneously and nothing happened.

      Hitting both together will actually "brake" the motor, make it hold in place electrically.

    hello I'm from Bangladesh 🇧🇩
    I'm currently an Undergrad student in Mechanical Engineering.
    I want you to know that I'm very used to with the BTS 7960 motor driver.I've used this driver in many of my projects.And it does the job very well. For example, recently I participated in a competition called Robo Soccer.Where your bot needs to be very rugged,powerful and heavy.BTS 7960 motor driver handles the high current flow to the High Torque motors very well and it barely heats up.
    Another thing I want to mention that, it is a single channel motor driver.That means you can only control a single motor with this driver. Whereas , the L298N driver is a double channel and capable of controlling 2 motors at the same time. But BTS driver handles high torque motors much easily than L298n motor driver.

      Hi, can you help me with BTS7960?
      I got problem with it when I try to launch the car motor for windshield. Motor works very slowly and not constantly, also I hear some sort of "scratch" Noise from motor. And with GND from driver connected to arduino GND doesn't allow to run the motor, so it runs without it

    So when you have the two enable pins pulled high, but no PWM on the other two pins, does the motor draw any current?

    my doubt is if i want to rotate the motor to right side only do i hAVE TO connect the left pwm(both enables are connected).

    I have just made a temperature check of one of these modules, and I think that the current specifications given are far too optimistic. The right steady state current should be about 7 Amps. I use at test set up with the H-bridge in a four quadrant configuration with a motor and 24 VDC. Both sides are driven by 10 kHz, so the motor see a 20 kHz PWM signal. I then measured the temperature on the surface of the packet and on the heat sink. With a current of 7 Amp to a loaded motor I get 124 degr. C on the surface and 84 degr. C on the heat sink. You may choose to set two modules in parallel in order to increase the current and power, that you can handle.

    My motor has a peak current of 3.6Amps at stall condition. My application requires the motor to stall for 5-10s. Is there a way to limit the maximum current through a 24v dc motor to 3.6amps in this motor driver?

    This is fab, thank goodness for an accurate summary. Just wondering, is there any reason not to tie the Enable pins together if you'd never need to disable only one direction? And I suppose for absolute 'I have run out of pins' panic, any reason not to just tie them to the 5V in if I was certain I wouldn't ever need them off whilst the Arduino had power?

      IT all can be run on just 4 pins when you think about it.. Both 'enable' pins should be short to the vcc, basically.

      Still not getting grip what is the meaning of the logic chip here in this circuit. Why not just connect to arduino/Esp32 and control directly with logic?!
      Just thinking my own PCB design and wondering is there some specific reason to take logic chip on board. I have no need for speed adjustment.

    I am confused. I was expecting that the two enable inputs can be used to enable/disable the motor for one direction individually. Only this way, I could use them with two separate limit switches. If one limit is reached, I should be able to move back into the other direction but if bot enable inputs must be high, I don't see a way to solve that unless I use some additional circuitry. Also, you said that one enable input is for one of the driver but isn't the module controlling the motor with an H-bridge ? This would mean, we do not have one driver dedicated to one of the directions but both drivers would always be needed and simply switch the polarity of the motor connection.

    on my Pcb the Digital GND and the Supply - is already put together; so there is no need for an extra GND Connection Line

      You actually can't use diodes on a full h-brige

      @@SimpleElectronics What I meant is a schottky diode between the poles of the motor. Isn't that how they usually wire them?

      You can only add those in uni-directional applications

      If you use a full H-bridge driver (like this module) you shouldn't and can't use diodes, diodes are only used when you use a single transistor or a single mosfet to drive the motor in just one direction.

      I don't see a problem with that but the modules are so cheap, I would just run a pair of them

    Hello, how do i use the low-side MOSFET inside the BTN8982 when the load (Motor) is connected to the Vs + supply (+24 Volts) and O/P terminal (tab and pin 4)? I'm using a PWM drive signal at the input of IN while INH is held high (logic +5volts)? The datasheet shows that to select either the high-side or low side MOSFET transistors inside the BTN8982 will mean that when the PWM signal is high (+5 volt level) then the high-side MOSFET will be on therefore shunting the motor which will act a brake, which is not efficient? Any ideas?

    Why is it required to connect grounds on 24v and 5v circuits? What is the difference if I don't do that?
    I'm a complete noob, so if my question if dumb, I'm sorry, but I really do not understand. I thought these sorts of modules are meant to separate logic and power circuits.

      it's good practice to do this - plus when you send signals from the microcontroller - they need to be grounded too, that's why you tie them together

    i know enoght to make my own grow lights and stuff like that lol ii even turn old TV no matter there size into a grow light so i know how to do something and i know how to solder and all that but to really understand why and how everything works isnt easy but atleast i know the basics and then some but im not smart like you lol i wish i was then i wouldnt be waisting my life away but owell

    i wisg i had the time and capacity to learn all the shit you know lol i wish i could know all about electronics but its not easy for a high school drop out lol well i only wnet to high school for a year and that was in group home so it doesnt count lol so ive never even started high school lol me and my twin dropped out at the age 14 because we got out of a group home and the schools wouldnt except us because we where bad kids lol so we never went back to school thanks america lol anyways i know allot but its hard to keep it all because i dont like to laern something unless i can do it hands on and everything cost money so i just quit trying lol but anyways i still live with my mom at 35 years old and i will live with her until she is dead lol
