Not enough characters to carry a fighting game. Kill La Kill had very few standout characters so it was always gonna be an uphill battle to gain an audience in a niche gaming genre.
I feel like the game had waaaayyyy more characters that could’ve been added. I mean just look back at the anime. So many scenes and moments featuring different characters that could’ve been implemented. For example, a few of the club presidents, along with the mohawk dude, even Ragyo’s assistant. On top of that, so many costumes were missing. Example - Ragyo in Junketsu, Evil Ryoko, Satski in Sen., etc
I do think there was still a pool of characters they could have drawn from. The club presidents for example (boxing guy, tennis lady). Tsumugu was in the DTR but could also have a loose spot. Maybe something zaney like Mako's family.
@@thechugg4372 Facts. Although I doubt it, I’m hoping Kill La Kill eventually gets a game that captures the uniqueness the anime had. Something like the Naruto storm games had done. Something that’ll allow the player to explore the world of KLK, while also getting to play with various characters (Ragyo in Junketsu, Evil Ryoko, DTR, etc)
This game really need an" Original Story" and "Never Before Sean Characters" to bring in old and new fans of the anime as well as to keep the game Alive
@@char1363 It was on Switch and Steam at launch. It wasn’t ported to Xbox not because of exclusivity, but because there are barely any Xbox owners in Japan. Really goes to show what little budget this game had.
Its a dang shame to hear how Trigger's gatekeeping approach to the development of the game possibly created a frustrating working situation between Trigger and APlus which may have kept them from wanting to continue working together. If there was ever a fighting game, arena or otherwise, that I wished got a second life similar to Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising, it would be KILL la KILL IF: A better online experience, multiple single player modes, more characters (including Kisaragi + Shizui), character rebalancing and additional colors... and of course, short haired Satsuki!
If they're struggling for a roster, wouldn't it be awesome to have a studio trigger crossover fighting game? Imagine characters from Kill la Kill, Gurenn Lagann, Redline, BNA, Promare and Witch Academia were facing off against each other. So much awesome potential for flair.

@Ultradragon16 not op, but there's a 2v2 gundam 3rd person 3d arena fighter that's massive in jp, but since the arcade cabinets are basically only in Asia (mostly jp), it's not really heard of anywhere else. Gotta say this is about the peak of anime game content. Damn near a video essay. Very artful and direct analysis of a situation and the context around the release of an anime game. Would love to see more stuff like this from you.
Also, one upside is that someone is porting the characters from this into Gmod, so far, the mooks, Satsuki, Ryuko and Nue are ported, so if you want to see Satsuki and Vergil Fight, a Duel between Ryuko and Sam or want to see Nui get her ass Beat by either Minos, Sisyphus or Gabriel, you can!
Got it on a whim a couple of years back, for 20€ (Switch version). I remember thinking that, as far as arena fighters go, it was lacking in content, but what content it had was more fun and diverse than the average arena fighter.
I've never played this game but just from the many times and explanations this channel gave on this game, I can already tell this game is AMAZING. I mean when he says, that each character plays differently, he MEANS it.
I remember dropping the game back then because there was a weird glitch, that when fighting against some friends online, the inputs of both of us would just stop being accepted in the middle of the fight. That happend quiet often and it was pretty frustrating. But else it was a pretty great Game, even with the lack of content

I’m really happy to see someone talking about the Kill la Kill game. Such a hidden gem that had potential. I remember taking this game over to my friends house to play with the boys. We had a blast. (It also helped that they weren’t into anime so the visuals blew their minds LOL)
I remembered Alpharad liking this game so much even though he hyped up Jump Force. And i remembered that he is still willing to make another video on this game with his friends when he won't even do another Jump Force video. Then i watched tournament matches on a side event and the game looks fun. Only to be dropped literally a few weeks later.
Being a massive KLK-head I bought this game on launch day knowing full well it would not last. I was both saddened but also pleasantly surprised with the amount of debth there was. Sad because it's still an anime arena fighter where there's not much to do if there's no online and friends don't care. Surprised because when I really sat down to grasp the combat system I've found it to be much deeper than many of the similar games I've played. You can also tell there WAS love put into the game and I can honestly understand Trigger given the style of KLK is VERY important to the feel. I was worried they wouldn't be able to replicate the feel of KLK but they did.
This game was soo underrated I really liked it! I honestly stopped playing after they nerfed single sword satsuki tho well after mako🤣 but I still enjoyed the time I had on it!
While I got the game on PS4, I kind of wish I got it on Steam. Interesting story, a battle system that tries to deviate from normal 3D Arena fighters, and awesome visuals. Though I feel this game especially could have been better off as a 2D Anime Fighter. (But I do remember hearing they were trying to blend it together)
The presence of the Rock Paper Scissors system KILLED me on this one, and it just felt like a lot of important mechanics were tied to it. I really wanted to like the game, but I just couldn’t get past that system. What a shame
I think the RPS not being even, with the initiator having an advantage, makes for an interesting mind game. Winning a well timed one can bring you back into the match, while going for it while ahead and losing can give the opponent a ton of momentum.
So I still have the game, I love how well animated the game is. The biggest issue I had was the small roster. And to be fair, the show itself didn't offer a lot of characters to work with. I was barely able to come with 2 other characters they could have added.
So not only the factors you listed helped in the game's fall to obscurity but also mostly studio trigger and there behavior during its development is the main reason why
The fact that they didn't even put Nonon's canonical outfit into a game that only had 10 characters suggests that Triggers input about character designs wasn't unfairly granular and that Arc System Works simply didn't want to create a product that would be competitive with their other roll outs. I work with 3D modellers on a weekly basis, the more notes you give them ultimately means the less they have to improvise and the happier they are. They'll get antsy if you keep telling them to revise a product they believed finished, but if your doing what Trigger certainly did, and giving Arc System Works the 3D models that were used in the Kill la Kill anime, complete with premade riggings, skins and animations, and saying "do this, but higher poly and better lighting" they basically don't have a legitimate complaint in the world, and are entirely responsible for any issues. Edit: I'm legit not surprised that they were not allowed inside the Studio
This was a good game. Had a lot of extra story for fans, it sits on our self a short, but fun king. Entering the fighting game 'community' indefinitely doesn't sound like it was in the goal posts for Trigger, more so getting another act of a series they cherished making its own presence in another medium. Trigger fanboy sure, but it was a unique arena fighter that the devs gave much love to with all the unique mechanics each character has.
on your point about trigger expecting kill la kill to be the big hit it was there simply was no way to predict that. this was their FIRST anime as a studio. no one had really heard of them, though they had some big names connected to the studio at the time. also dont remembering hearing much about the anime prior to release
In fairness Kill la Kill doesn’t have a particular expansive cast of characters. They basically included everyone they could. I guess Takarada is the biggest missing character. Outside from him the only other ones they could add are like, the boxing guy, the tennis girl, and like, maybe the sewing guy? He doesn’t really fight though, but they could get creative with him. It’s only 24 episodes. You don’t really get full fighting game rosters in only 24 episodes.
It's worth mentioning that this game's announcement was the reason I decided to buckle down and watch the anime front to back, and now it's my favourite in the medium. And the game has a special charm for me.
the moment I seen the question in the title screen, I immediately went to look for it I found it and it looks like it is doing pretty well from what I saw
this game looks really cool but i think they definitely needed more characters. if they make another with more characters and rollback i’d give it a try
Main thing is is that Kill la Kill doesn't really have enough characters to add without starting to make repetitive/boring ones that would get overshadowed
It makes me sad how much Kill la Kill fell off. They tried making a manga of it which had some excellent artwork but that got canceled after 3 books. Same with the game. I bought it and played it at launch. Quite enjoyed it too. But it wasn’t long before there just wasn’t anything left to do in it.
honestly, I think making Kill La Kill into an arena fighter was a mistake. Kill La Kill isn't a huge ensemble cast type of story, whenever the discussion of a Kill La Kill appeared before this game was announced, I never heard anyone talking about wanting to play as any character that wasn't Ryuko or Satsuki.
Before starting the vid, my first thoughts were "released WAY too late with little to show for it", so I smiled when your first two points where Content and Timing. After it, this to me is a time where I want to grab Trigger heads and say to their face "you do NOT have the Street Fighter DBZ Shonen Jump prestige to AFFORD being as picky as you are. So swallow your pride and let these fighting game companies DO THEIR THING."
My experience with Kill La Kill If restored my faith on Arena fighters after Jump force and others like it completely destroyed it. Yes, the game is lacking in content but I still recall it fondly to this day. Sucks what went down in development but I think they made a solid game all things considered.
IP and timing killed it. Lots of people nowadays are anti Ecchi, the series wasn’t as popular as it use to be when the game released(the game came out before the Pogchamp meme also), and the IP didn’t have enough content to work off of.
I played it this year A few month's ago Honestly gameplay wise prefer the combat over most arena fighters I've played The story was fun as a fan of the show and the characters we're fun The content is the thing it's missing Even the most basic fighting game I can play if they have something basic like arcade time attack etc Horde mode wasn't the best and in general After i finished exploring the characters I had enough Only now going back to it when I want to play story mode again or I play with friends co-op on Switch I wished I could play this game for as much time I've played something like Melty Blood but after 20h I had enough It's a fun game I still recommend but get it on sale Yui is my favorite character Her gimmicky nature is more unique then most characters I've played in a arena fighter It's a good 7/10
Honestly, the main issue to me was 1) ultra bad game breaking hitbox issues (I uploaded a LOT of them on their Twitter account) 2) no rollback netcode.
Doesn’t help that KLK didnt have much staying power as a franchise. It’s middling second half and mediocre ending+OVA ruined what could’ve otherwise been remembered as the second coming of Gurren Lagann. I think Studio Trigger’s writing ranges from average to mediocre, which is a shame, since their animation is always outstanding. I do think Edgerunners was fantastic, however. Hopefully they’ll do more work with that quality of storytelling going forward.
Find it crazy how I saw one of your klk if vids pop up in my feed, leading me to download and play it for a bit again, only for a few days later to come and this video is released😅
Damn what a tragedy development was besides the gap between the anime’s final episode and the game’s release. Game may be hanging on by a thread but I love it for what it is and I’m seeking to improve my play!
The game was destined to be niche, honestly. Kill la Kill doesn't have a large roster and the game was released after hope for the show died out. Klk doesn't have enough pop-cultural longevity for a game released out of nowhere to do well. I will give the developers kudos for paying attention to detail and capturing the feel of the anime.
This Game did not deserve the reception it got Kill la Kill has been one of the most Fun and competitive arena fighters I’ve ever played But it just died
What ultimately killed the game for its community as well is how the last balance patch severely limited combo freedom! Its like they tried to mold it back into a regular arena fighter as a last resort but ultimately ended up putting the nail on the coffin and alienating the fanbase. Its really unfortunate but I'll always remember the first month after the game release fondly, the game was at its peak
They released it when the anime was like 5-6 years old, everyone has moved on and doesn't care about KLK any more, it's the brutal truth. I only played it for the story, but the game was actually pretty fun despite me not liking fighting games.
Even if the game came earlier, it wouldn't succeed with this small roster and this amount of content at launch. Which is a shame because it did have a good foundation, but at the end, full package gets the win, AGAIN.
They should’ve scrapped the arena x side scroller fighter gimmick and just make the first character action game with pvp mode. Imagine you start with Ryuko knowing 2-3 base combos and a handful of special input attacks, then you go through the game and Ryuko has enough attack variety for over 200 combo variations, then you unlock Satsuki and find a new way to enjoy the game as you acquire her moves and get a whole new play style. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, you find other characters locked behind higher difficulties and/or challenge modes. And then there’s a pvp mode where where combos are no longer infinite, forcing you to take extra consideration for the flow of combat
I liked the game, kinda wish it had more characters and that we could play with Senketsu Kisaragi and Junketsu Shinzui during normal verses modes. I get they were kinda overpowered but at the same time..... it was super cool.
In all honesty, I can't see how they can make a game about this series, on the top of my mind I can only think about maybe four or five characters that would actually stand out, and the clothing aspect of the in-universe rules is very complicated, not to mention, risky, to implement. I didn't even know of this game's existence but I'll give it a chance, it's now in my Steam Wishlist for the summer sale.
Did the game fail? I was expecting him to show some data showing sales and the team not turning a profit from it but he doesn’t. He’s saying that the game failed because it didn’t have a robust tournament community after release which is just a bizarrely metric for success. That’s a very rare thing to happen for a game and its not clear to me why thats a good thing. And of course the roster is small. Who else where the going to add? The dog? The mom who cooks budget croquettes? They pretty added all of the possible characters. They could have added the guy from nudist beach with the sewing machine gun he was cool but that’s still just one more character. And it makes sense why Trigger was all deeply involved and nitpicky. They want it to be a good product and when it comes to animation they simply know best.
I still play this game with my siblings on the nintendo switch but that's because I cannot find a match online no matter how long I wait. I'm positive eternal champions and sonic the fighters has a bigger player base than kill la kill if. And don't forget this game doesn't have cross platform play so chances of finding a match practically almost zero
Im glad you finally made a video on it. The best game in the genre, that was fixing the issues from the others, and still failed. It's truly tragic but still an amazing game. I just hope arena fighters in the future get inspired from this game gameplaywise, because truly, if you wanted a competitive arena fighter, where every character plays totally different, this was it.
I got this game immediately after the 4th re-watch of the anime itself early this year. I would say it's worth grabbing for the "What if" story mode if you're a big fan of the anime and the characters, more so when it's on sale. Just don't expect the cutscenes to play as energetic and fast as the show. It's a shame these red flags are hinting at some difficulties. Sushio-san plays a big role in the anime so I get why he cares that much. Just last year, we had a reverse situation where a game IP is seeking to make an anime from Trigger, and it didn't just blew up as an anime, but rejuvenated the much controversial game. We know how much trust CD Projekt Red had offered to Trigger when it comes to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. An almost hands-off approach, but not without friction at first as well. Perhaps both projects are incomparable. The scale, the approach and the genre, but I hope everyone learn something there and prepared to make greater art with their next steps. So gimme a Gurren Lagann Mecha game, SSSS.GRIDMAN Kaiju game, and a Panty & Stocking rhythm game. Cover all the bases am I right.
Kill la kill deserved much more than another arena foghter for ita video game adaption. This needed to be a single player action game that follows the events of the anime. Platinum even stated how much they wanted to make a kill la kill game. We could've had something special man
KIll la Kill if had the potential to have the roster amount and be competitive like FighterZ however it feels like it under delivered by it's miniscule roster and handful of stages

It’s only 24 episodes. You don’t really get full fighting game rosters in only 24 episodes.
It's worth mentioning that this game's announcement was the reason I decided to buckle down and watch the anime front to back, and now it's my favourite in the medium. And the game has a special charm for me.
It's gotta be hard to fill a game off a show unless it's been running as long as Bleach or Dragonball. The game looks super pretty though.
the moment I seen the question in the title screen, I immediately went to look for it
I found it and it looks like it is doing pretty well from what I saw
this game looks really cool but i think they definitely needed more characters. if they make another with more characters and rollback i’d give it a try
This game is a diamond in the rough compared to other arena fighters.
Brothers im thinking about buying this game (im not a kill la kill fan) what do you think should i buy it or no?
I played it this year A few month's ago
Honestly gameplay wise prefer the combat over most arena fighters I've played
The story was fun as a fan of the show and the characters we're fun
The content is the thing it's missing
Even the most basic fighting game I can play if they have something basic like arcade time attack etc
Horde mode wasn't the best and in general After i finished exploring the characters I had enough
Only now going back to it when I want to play story mode again or I play with friends co-op on Switch
I wished I could play this game for as much time I've played something like Melty Blood but after 20h I had enough
It's a fun game I still recommend but get it on sale
Yui is my favorite character Her gimmicky nature is more unique then most characters I've played in a arena fighter
It's a good 7/10
Honestly, the main issue to me was 1) ultra bad game breaking hitbox issues (I uploaded a LOT of them on their Twitter account) 2) no rollback netcode.
I’ll tell you what happened: Platinum saw a Golden Egg and didn’t take. Arc Sys took it and painted it into a kindergarten level decorated egg
why would a parent even buy a game that isnt suited for kids based on an anime that isnt suited for kids
I have that game it's amazing, it's a shame it didn't last.
i had no idea this existed
breaks my heart this game flopped
you forgot to mention that 60 was super steep for a game like this
Find it crazy how I saw one of your klk if vids pop up in my feed, leading me to download and play it for a bit again, only for a few days later to come and this video is released😅
I have 18 hours clocked in on Kill La Kill IF. I had to make the most of it since I really love Kill La Kill and this is the only game for it.
This game also is not able to broadcast on Twitch with certain things
Damn what a tragedy development was besides the gap between the anime’s final episode and the game’s release. Game may be hanging on by a thread but I love it for what it is and I’m seeking to improve my play!
The game was destined to be niche, honestly. Kill la Kill doesn't have a large roster and the game was released after hope for the show died out. Klk doesn't have enough pop-cultural longevity for a game released out of nowhere to do well. I will give the developers kudos for paying attention to detail and capturing the feel of the anime.
This game is no longer available on the Playstation Store, i have my physical copy sealed and i am debating myself if i should open the game or not.
This Game did not deserve the reception it got
Kill la Kill has been one of the most Fun and competitive arena fighters I’ve ever played
But it just died
What ultimately killed the game for its community as well is how the last balance patch severely limited combo freedom! Its like they tried to mold it back into a regular arena fighter as a last resort but ultimately ended up putting the nail on the coffin and alienating the fanbase. Its really unfortunate but I'll always remember the first month after the game release fondly, the game was at its peak
The demo took two months to start, the intro was unstoppable so you have to sit through all of it.
If this game is ever revived I’m the first person there
Ok
Grab the Restitched mod
Does anyone have this game on Steam?
Whenever I boot it up, it crashes so I eventually just gave up on it.
They released it when the anime was like 5-6 years old, everyone has moved on and doesn't care about KLK any more, it's the brutal truth. I only played it for the story, but the game was actually pretty fun despite me not liking fighting games.
Damn I literally just started this anime a couple days ago and was looking into the game. Such a crazy coincedence😂
I have 2 requests.
1: Fire the IGN critic who reviewed this game.
And 2: Port this game to Xbox.
Thank you and good night.
Ngl this game was mad fun but there wasn’t much to do after beating the game for me
One time, I bought Kill La Kill IF on switch for free.
It had a $3 discount and I used most of the golden coins.
I liked the game, kinda wish it had more characters and that we could play with Senketsu Kisaragi and Junketsu Shinzui during normal verses modes. I get they were kinda overpowered but at the same time..... it was super cool.
I would love for Ryuko to at least be a guest character in another arcsys fighting game
This game deserved so much better after how long they wanted to make a KlK game
I still play the game its still pretty fun
Always thought the graphics were really good (even on Switch). Loved the demo.
This game really needed a bigger roster. They could have added some of the Two-Star guys, or Berserk Ryuko from episode 12
I actually remember alpharad play this game and promote it. It looked really cool
7:19 i dont get it, you say "10 characters", but i only see 8 everytime you show the character selection screen. Am I missing something?
This game was fun af worth a buy if you get a discount on it
I like it. It’s a nice transition from anime to game
Still have the disk of the game, it was actually pretty good. I wish more attention would be drawn to it, maybe get the community up a little.
I miss this game so much
Jump force had everyone in 2019 hating all arena fighters
Kill la kill deserved much more than another arena foghter for ita video game adaption. This needed to be a single player action game that follows the events of the anime. Platinum even stated how much they wanted to make a kill la kill game. We could've had something special man
That game looked more like a ps2 game than a ps4 game
I still play it on my switch, its sick
Sounds like we’re never going to get a deserved Gureen Lagann game
KIll la Kill if had the potential to have the roster amount and be competitive like FighterZ however it feels like it under delivered by it's miniscule roster and handful of stages
