  • Warhammer Plus has been around for a few years now and whilst there are some shows on it that I really enjoy (Battle Report is great!) I think there is an opportunity to refocus the platform onto content that is both cheaper to make and might offer more value to subscribers. Here’s my opinion of how to change Warhammer Plus!

    I wish they would add a gallery with all the 360 degree views of the miniatures. Especially the stuff they no longer sell. I got a lot of those miniatures in my pile of shame, and could really still use the helpful reference! 🖌️🤩🎨

      An amazing idea, and surely also something 'Eavy Metal artists would appreciate. Having your work "Immortalized" in an official manner, beyond fan made wiki's online, along with useful info like release year and sculptor for older models, would surely be a popular idea.

    I would include atleast a 10% discount on all GW products via their online shop with all subscriptions. I know that is smaller than some online shops and only marginally larger than the recent price increase, but there is stuff on their shop you don'tget elsewhere.

    The behind the scenes stuff is exactly the sort of thing I’ve always wanted to see on there, designers notes, retrospectives, even a look at the really functional stuff like the casting process, how the warehouse works (or doesn’t), all the sort of things that no one else can do. I also think things like the lore videos could be improved with a bit more background stuff that only they could really do (concept art etc.) as currently I think there are UA-camrs who do far better lore videos and the official ones don’t add anything that couldn’t be done by anyone.

    With all that money they expect us to shovel over for a few plastic minis, they could definitely do some of these. But given GW is intent on denying giving their artists even the slightest credit like Marvel until the 60s and 70s it doesn’t seem likely. Nice work.

    They should do a podcast/chat in bugmans bar. Call it Bugmans after hours and have people talk about hobby projects they are working on, or playing some classic GW games like List Patrol, Space Hulk or the Bugmans bar game. They should also film the events they host there and go highlight reels

    Love the Behind the Scenes interviews and non-fiction ideas. I would totally watch those.
    Would love a “How it’s made” video series from concept art, to how the model is sculpted, to how the molds are made, and finally how it’s manufactured and packaged. I think that’d be very interesting.

    As someone who just loves digging through old archives and materials and telling people about my findings, I really wish they (on wh+), or you (who knows...), would release videos about unreleased BL books (prospero graphic novel by Richardson&Thorpe), animations (bloodquest), games, campaigns (battle for black fire pass, fires of cyraxus) or about the history of the Forge World/the history of the Warhammer Art... The history of obscure wh stuff in general, hehe. I mean, It's so exciting, isn't it?

  • @Bellerophon3
    @Bellerophon3 4 місяці тому +13

    I think you would be surprised at how much stuff GW have kept. For context I’ve interviewed twice for archive adjacent jobs at GW, and got to see some cool stuff in one of the interviews (like the 3up for the Empire powder monkey). My impression was most of the older stuff isn’t particularly well organised.
    On Warhammer+, I’m into the idea of more real world documentary type stuff. What loremasters should have been. The vault is also okay, but they did the dumb thing of removing all the old rules, so you just get the background bits of books. I would definitely have used the vault a lot more if I could play older editions using it.
    They have definitely failed to leverage the potential Warhammer+ had. Most of the shows are derivative of stuff UA-camrs have already done.

    • @jordansorcery
      @jordansorcery  4 місяці тому +8

      I’m genuinely really pleased to hear there’s probably more in the archive than I expect. Much like the BBC losing some classic material it really feels like this sort of culturally significant stuff ought to be retained/stored/researchable into the future as much as possible.

    The thing i love about Warhammer vault is to see what has been going on my whole life-- even before I was in the hobby. I was born in 2006 and seeing stuff from around that time is very interesting to me. I'm only a few days older than the release of Horus Rising!

  • @tepecwho
    @tepecwho 3 місяці тому +1

    3 minutes into the video and you were already addressing 2 things I've asked GW not long ago: 1. Warhammer Vault hasn't been updated since last October (7 months ago at the time of writing this comment), which worries me, and 2. the likelihood of them releasing some behind the scenes or even interviews, because that's something I would tremendously enjoy!
    I think you've got a lot of great ideas, notably to make this paid service more worthwhile for someone like me (an adult). However, I still believe part of Warhammer+ content should be freely accessible, not necessarily for myself now, but because when I think of how I enjoyed Warhammer as a kid more than 20 years ago (i.e. without money 😅), this kind of content would've been the best way to get me to keep asking for Warhammer figurines at Christmas 😆. I feel there's a missed opportunity in bringing enjoyable content to youngsters, who likely won't enjoy the "alternatives" I had 2 decades ago (i.e. reading a billion times the same White Dwarf magazines and taking my friends' rulebooks whenever I could get my hands on them); times have changed and the formats of content I enjoyed 20 years ago are not something the majority of kids will be able or willing to get now. Keeping that mindset of "doing cool stuff for the kids", I would also add that translating in other languages the loremasters episodes and other content could be great, because while I'm personnally OK with English content now as an older lad, it's not the case for many people and notably the younger ones where I live here in France (and I suspect it's the same thing in many countries where the English language is not the native tongue).
    I really think you're making a great point at ~ 18:30 about "how to use what's available to you in the most efficient way", and I do hope GW will see this as well and try to act on it in the future.
    Thanks for this interesting and constructive video!

    I went to Games Day in 1993 and they had a Space Hulk live action short film they had made playing on repeat there. It was about 5-10mins long (i cant remember exactly) but had terminators, genestealers and the big reveal of a chaos terminator at the end. Itll probably never seen the light of day again, but its the sort of niche material id like to see on Warhammer+. Genuinely think the youtubers like Jordan do a better job of creating lore content, nostalgia trips and doing interviews than the offical channel.

    Behind the scenes programming is what I've been hoping for since it launched. Showing how the models are created, maybe following a big release from start to finish or focussing individual aspects. Completely agree with you on bringing back voxcast, those were amazing but also the conversation style shows in the vein of the Hollywood Reporter's roundtables they put up on youtube around awards season with directors, producers, actors etc but with staff. I also think more hobby shows would be great, kitbashing or scenery making be it as tutorials or just showcasing possibilities. You could even turn elements into competitions, get a bunch of sculpters in a room with a pile of sprues and give them a couple of hours to go wild. Maybe a show that just looks at the personal hobby of different staff members.
    I personally enjoy the current offerings but I do think more variety is what the platform really needs.

    I think a competition show (Like Bake Off or Forged in Fire) where they start with a baker’s dozen of talented hobbyists & each week they have to tackle a different challenge - paint a unit of their choice in 6 hours, or build a diorama, or kitbash a character that doesn’t have a current mini in production. The winner gets a paid internship at the studio.

    Content is clearly key and I have thought in similar ways regarding shows behind the scenes with their new releases and history of the company. But the main thing I would like to see is an affiliate program so that content creators on UA-cam can produce content for Warhammer+. Then they would get loads of content while at the same time they support the individual creators. It would also mean that you as a viewer didn’t need to pay for each channels premium content. So a win for all involved.

    I’m not sure what’s already been added to WH+ but a roadmap of vaulted books/rules/codex/artwork etc. would be really nice. I would be interested if they added their audiobooks to the service although I don’t know how viable that is with audible already having them. Some kind of loyalty scheme would be nice rather than a one off voucher. Maybe they could allow more community interaction as to what vaulted kits should be made to order every couple of months (the last idea does have a shortfall of the most popular armies/ setting being bias though).

    I agree with everything you say. It baffles me that GW don't make more an asset they have that no one else does - access to the studio! And the people who work there!
    I think White Dwarf magazine is objectively pretty good these days although I don't enjoy it as much as I did when I was a teenager in the 90s. Part of that is obviously nostalgia (and that I had time to read it all then!). But I also felt like I knew who the main people were. The magazine made you feel like you were part of a group with Andy and Jervis, etc.
    These days none of the contributors' personalities really come across and the bit at the end where they show you what people have been up to that month is a real let down. There ought to be room for at least a few pages where we can hear from people about what they're playing and painting. Updates on leagues and campaigns, etc. Perhaps GW are scared of 'another Duncan' but if so, they're foolishly cutting off their noses to spite their face.
    Come on GW, let us in and make us feel a part of a community!

    While blockbuster movies are certainly different, for me and many others the behind the scenes documentaries from The Lord of the rings trilogy were probably some of the most inspiring and fascinating pieces of media besides the actual movies. Your ideas around the archivist and broader historical material Games Workshop has access to internally, stirred in me this idea of a similar type of behind-the-scenes documentary from inside Games Workshop which could be just absolutely fascinating. Brilliant idea.
    Edit: Given the DIY-nature of the hobby, and how the Perry Brothers both went to work on the Lord of the rings (among many others involved with the company, I'm sure) I find it highly unlikely that this idea of a documentary behind the scenes wouldn't have come up amongst the creatives within Games Workshop. Depressingly maybe I find it very likely that the higher-ups within Games Workshop whether that's 20 years ago or 10 years ago wouldn't have given the go order for such an idea because of the weird way that company seems to operate.

    One last stray thought: do you think Warhammer Plus is being neglected because focusing on UA-cam (and, I assume, whatever is coming with Amazon) is more profitable?

  • @shorelessskies
    @shorelessskies 4 місяці тому

    One trick they missed was leaning into immersion. Master Class is fine, in spite of the loathsome stock music. But shows like Loremasters, and even Battle Report, should be going full immersion. By that I mean, for example, a 40k episode on Meks could be explained from the perspective of the Ordo Scriptorum. Alex is excellent, but how much cooler would it be to feel like you're watching some kind of classified essay from the Inquisition?
    Battle Report, same thing. Si and Nick are great, but it would be several orders of magnitude cooler to have a voice actor narrating the report as if it the battle was actually unfolding out there in the grim darkness, rather than on a table in Nottingham.
    I mention these specifically because if James Workshop is trying to be as cheap as possible (and we know he is), creating content from an in-universe point of view would enrich the content immeasurably at (I would imagine) no extra cost.
    On the same topic of cheap added, value they should just be stealing from Disney+. As you suggested for WH+, Disney+ has a little documentary for like every ride. Even as someone who doesn't care much about Disney, going to the parks having seen those documentaries made the experience that much cooler because it added a level of depth to the experience. I can't imagine scripting and filming a few artists and archivists (as you say) can be very pricey.
    Disney+ also has these random ambient shorts. Some of it is literally just one animated shot with some background noise; some are clips from films set to calming music. How cheap and easy and cool would that be for Warhammer?! Anyway, bigger companies are out there doing this thing. James Workshop can just follow their lead.

    Retrospectives on rules, art and model design would require them to credit their artist and unfortunatly that's not a thing they do anymore

    I subbed for the shows and then I cancelled because of the shows. The archive was nice, but the rest of W+ I'd describe as free bonus content.

    First like for me, do I get a prize? Although I am not likely to watch Warhammer Plus because I don’t own a television 📺
    I am still waiting for the Warhammer DnD book about Orcs to arrive 😢

    I can only assume wh+ was a dumb attempt to cash in on the streaming fad when all the media companies saw Netflix making tons of money and said "we want in on that!" without realising the only reason Netflix was doing well was because everything was there... then the streaming market fractured and they are all terrible... sigh. I agree that in-house videos would definitely help pad out the anemic show lineup a lot. Would love to have "veteran chats" or things like that, slap microphones on an artist and designer and ask them to explain why they did x or y of a popular model. And hire Martha of course.

      It's a response to seeing fans create things out of passion who people wanted to support, the passionless executives thought that was their money and thought they could take it all for themselves. GW once had the best hobby website in the world and a significant number of their current employees aren't even aware of that.

    I'm not a subscriber to WH+ and don't see the appeal in its current form. Whilst I'm sure the painting guides, lore videos and battle reports are great, these are available on youtube for free from different creators where I can search for people who make content that more suits my preferences. This leaves the vault and the mini. Which is a very rough sale for me personally.
    The only way i'd sign up to WH+ is if they made all rules available for all the main games through the service. Even if they increase the price. With the rapid changing of the rules, the hard copy rules are invalid as it's being printed. Sell me the books full of art and lore, and give me access to the rule with WH+ for ~10 euro a month.

    Warhammer plus basically exists because of the amount of low budget fan produced content that was so popular. It only makes sense that they would produce something similarly amateurish, the low-budget look is clearly what fans are responding to.

    Unfortunately GW has an intractably toxic corporate culture, laid out by some of your guests who were the people responsible for it, and it is on a trajectory that will never be corrected. As Rick Priestley said on another channel, behaviours don't change the systems just collapse, though he was speaking about historical nations the point is the same.

    (🤔) While *PARIAH NEXUS* & The EXODITE are serviceable✔, however shows such as:
    _'INTERROGATOR'_ and specifically *_HAMMER -&- BOLTER_* are just plain dreadful (e.g. the *Stop-motion* limited-frame animation style ) and are frankly uninspired, cheap-looking shells of what we honestly _"Could_ Have Had"_ had they been conceived -&- produced in the right hands.
    (In a "Nut-shell": The *_quality_* does not *_match_* the rest of *WARHAMMER* and it's worlds' rich & detailed aesthetics; and the WH+ offerings as a whole are in all fairness pretty underwhelming & more than anything just plain *_Disappointing._* )
    That's the Opinion of many & more Warhammer Vets, Fans & Players alike: GW & Warhammer Animation Studio needs to aspire to & do *_Better_* if they wish to earn both our ☑praise✅ _And_ our hard-won 💲Dollars💲 every month.
    🏁👍Thanks for your wonderful suggestions, Jordan: in a perfect world my friend, you'd be up there Shot-calling on The Old World Devs *[};-)=*☁*

      I really enjoyed the Hammer and Bolter episode “A New Life.” Where a family tries to get safe passage off a planet being attacked by Tyranids. Sadly, the way the ending is handled greatly diminished what was otherwise a wonderful tale. I would have had the mother just take off her hood in relief. . . and if you know, you know. . . maybe have her reassuringly hold onto a strangely clawed hand from the crying bundle she was carrying. . . Something subtle. But the ending they went with was waaaaaay too heavy-handed. When I try to get new people into Warhammer by showing them that episode, they absolutely love everything but the ending -- which they find confusing and off-putting. Hammer and Bolter should be a tool to recruit new fans and find new audiences -- but half the stories just make the lore strange and confusing, and not in a way that makes people want to explore it further, at least not in my experience.

    Unfortunately I think the recent tempest in a teapot about Custodes is going to doom any interest GW has in building out the lore in smaller, more digestible pieces. Even a few lines including a female pronoun in a short lore story in a 100-page Codex prompted a small but very vocal minority of the fanbase to literally lose their minds. If I was a corporate suit at GW, I would look at that and the lesson I would take is "say as little as possible that could possibly be perceived as controversial," and that doesn't really mesh well with a bunch of behind-the-scenes stuff or small lore vignettes. I expect the level of control GW would demand over anything would be such that it wouldn't really be worthwhile to do anything on that kind of small scale.
    GW has been pretty controlling with the lore in the past but I think that is only going to increase for the foreseeable future, at least when it comes to 40k. For whatever reason the outrage brigade doesn't seem as interested in AOS or Fantasy - and I don't think it's a coincidence that you see GW doing stuff like publishing short stories on war-com related to the lore of those games, which you just don't see for 40k. I think 40k lore has become too hot of a potato for GW at this point to allow for any real level of experimentation or autonomy on the part of creators.

    50 bucks a year gets me the tv content and digital access to every book (codices and battle tomes) and I’m in. This isn’t Netflix or Amazon. They need to step back and offer a product worth buying.
