Daisuke made Swansea realized that he can be happy without needing to be self-destructive or messed up with a spinning head and an empty bottle in hand. it broke him to do it - yet, he made the right choice. I know the game was trying to make us misinterpret his intentions at first, with the cutscenes to him seemingly trying to murder Jimmy like he lost it or something, but in the end, they revealed that he’s just a man that went through life and had seen too much Sure, he’s not that good of a person, or at least to the way he shows it, but he tries his best to change himself, for his kids and everything, he cares for Daisuke and even if his way of portraying isn’t the best, he cares for his safety. Swansea doesn't use the axe to get Daisuke out of the foam, Curly does. Swansea says that he would've done it himself if he could, but the code system prevents anyone but the captain from getting the axe.

gorgeous. finally some love for these two. mouthwashing fans have been eating good lately but by god is it a treat to see such a good swansea-centric animatic when pretty much everything else is about curly, anya (affectionate) or jimmy (derogatory). which i love that there is so much great stuff to enjoy but man swansea's and daisuke's relationship is an underrated dynamic. plus the song fits surprisingly well! its one of my all time mitski favorites but i always interpreted it more as something romantic? but it does work for swansea wonderfully. as rude and abrasive as he is, he's also deeply caring and protective. the fact that he actually wanted the best for daisuke and even saved that cryopod for him and ended up having to mercy kill him is still one of the most heartbreaking things ive seen in recent horror media. also that parallel between the shot of swansea's family and kids and the door closing on that picture only for daisuke to turn around to face swansea in the next shot? amazing. i have a lot of feelings on the matter and can't type them all out. love the animatic!!

Nah dude I knew I was gonna be sad. The dynamic between Swansea and Daisuke was one of my favorite things about the Mouthwashing game. It’s a nice thought knowing how Swansea was keeping the pod hidden away just for Daisuke. Bros a father and will always be a father, even if it’s hinted at that he was a shitty father and shitty husband on Earth that slight adult and masculine responsibility to protect your kids still shines through to the youngest member of the team Daisuke. I like to think that to Swansea Daisuke was another chance. A final way to show that he still wants to make up for his shitty life. Next to Daisuke Swansea is my second favorite character for that reason.
This is the first mouth washing content that ACTUALLY made me SOB. There are real tears streaming down my face. This is so insanely gorgeous and the part where Daisuke was breathing in agony oh my GOD. Swansea and mistki is a combination I never knew I need. I'm absolutely destroyed.

I think Swansea is such a sad character, we truly only got to see the worst of him. Even before the accident, being in the ship probably made him bitter and cynical due to the isolation. I would bet a million dollars that if you met him back home he would be much nicer. Like, a father who enjoyed spending time with his kids (becouse he didnt get much of it). HE HAD BEEN SOBER FOR YEARS. The accident and being traped with his addiction (alcohol) really brought out the worst of him. And he still was a fundamentally good man. His priority was to try and save Daisuke. Genuinly caring for his ray-of-sunshine coworker. Thats some hero shit.

It makes sense that people would focus more on Curly, Jimmy, and Anya since the story largely revolves around those three, but Daisuke and Swansea's dynamic is pretty underrated as well. Swansea guarding the cryopod for Daisuke's sake and also finally coming clean about what he thinks of Jimmy was one of the biggest highlights of the game. The idea that he saw Daisuke as his son and Daisuke becoming one of the biggest reasons he stayed sober on board was heartwarming and heart wrenching by the end. It really elevates the significance of him putting Daisuke out of his misery. He didn't want Jimmy messing with Daisuke like he did with Curly. He was completely spot on when he called Jimmy out for being a coward and for being a shitperson all around. The only character who actually puts Jimmy in his place and verbally calls him out.
Oh my god. I had to pause and hold back my tears a few times especially at 1:28 dude. The way Daisuke was struggling and in so much agony, crying and not wanting it to end like this. How Swansea knew there was nothing they could do and it would be for the best to just kill him then let the poor boy bleed out painfully. This game is so gut wrenching and the fandom knows how to make it more depressing. This is beautifully made though, amazing work.
Aughh I’m a sucker for an older character becoming a mentor/parental figure to a younger character and this hits HARD! Trying to keep the youngest member alive to only have to mercy kill them 😭 this is SO UNBELIEVABLY GOOD!

thought I wouldn't cry but then the zoom out panel w/ daisuke's corpse and swansea's bent over figure happened. something about how you've depicted them as small little people in a void of white just hurt when the lyric "someone to watch me die" came on like i will never recover from this.
I always look back at that moment from the game while keeping in mind that Swansea was canonically a father when it happened. This is a father who'll never get the chance of ever seeing his children again having to kill someone else's child, one who looked up to and trusted him, just to put him out of his misery from wounds he'll never recover from.
On my initial exposure to Mouthwashing, I hated Swansea for this. They could have done something for Daisuke, surely. He had a future. He could live. You reminded me that Swansea was a father. His decision wasn’t the choice of practicality - of a coworker driven insane by isolation and alcoholism. Swansea saw his own children in Daisuke and made the choice of a *father.*
The way the horse (the baby, innocence itself) is covered in blood and watching is so horrifically symbolic. The foreshadowing and meaning of literally everything in this story is so beautifully captured in this animatic, thank you for doing it!!! Justice!!!

I saw a comment abt this before {i don't remember where} but it said how swansea's name had a very deeper meaning. Like 'swan' sea because swans kill their children when there's no chance of survival or difficulty to survive to like kinda spare them of the pain and torture of living and that explains what he did, I saw it logical honestly, it was either dying tortured later or dying quickly without pain, also shows how Swansea saw Daisuke as his own.

I think Swansea is such a sad character, we truly only got to see the worst of him. Even before the accident, being in the ship probably made him bitter and cynical due to the isolation. I would bet a million dollars that if you met him back home he would be much nicer. Like, a father who enjoyed spending time with his kids (becouse he didnt get much of it). HE HAD BEEN SOBER FOR YEARS. The accident and being traped with his addiction (alcohol) really brought out the worst of him. And he still was a fundamentally good man. His priority was to try and save Daisuke. Genuinly caring for his ray-of-sunshine coworker. Thats some hero shit.
1:10 I love this part. The door closes on Swansea’s family (probably because he can never meet them again) but then he looks to the side and Daisuke is there with his sunshine smile. That boy gave him another reason to live…

I was watching this all like "omg such a cool animatic" and then 1:28 hit me like someone throw me an axe holy SHIT I LOVE THIS!!!
It makes sense that people would focus more on Curly, Jimmy, and Anya since the story largely revolves around those three, but Daisuke and Swansea's dynamic is pretty underrated as well. Swansea guarding the cryopod for Daisuke's sake and also finally coming clean about what he thinks of Jimmy was one of the biggest highlights of the game.
The idea that he saw Daisuke as his son and Daisuke becoming one of the biggest reasons he stayed sober on board was heartwarming and heart wrenching by the end. It really elevates the significance of him putting Daisuke out of his misery. He didn't want Jimmy messing with Daisuke like he did with Curly.
He was completely spot on when he called Jimmy out for being a coward and for being a shitperson all around. The only character who actually puts Jimmy in his place and verbally calls him out.

Oh my god. I had to pause and hold back my tears a few times especially at 1:28 dude. The way Daisuke was struggling and in so much agony, crying and not wanting it to end like this. How Swansea knew there was nothing they could do and it would be for the best to just kill him then let the poor boy bleed out painfully. This game is so gut wrenching and the fandom knows how to make it more depressing. This is beautifully made though, amazing work.

thought I wouldn't cry but then the zoom out panel w/ daisuke's corpse and swansea's bent over figure happened. something about how you've depicted them as small little people in a void of white just hurt when the lyric "someone to watch me die" came on like i will never recover from this.
You drew Daisuke with this big goofy smile. You really highlighted how he’s just a dumb kid trying his best and that makes it even sadder.
I always look back at that moment from the game while keeping in mind that Swansea was canonically a father when it happened.
This is a father who'll never get the chance of ever seeing his children again having to kill someone else's child, one who looked up to and trusted him, just to put him out of his misery from wounds he'll never recover from.

I saw a comment abt this before {i don't remember where} but it said how swansea's name had a very deeper meaning. Like 'swan' sea because swans kill their children when there's no chance of survival or difficulty to survive to like kinda spare them of the pain and torture of living and that explains what he did, I saw it logical honestly, it was either dying tortured later or dying quickly without pain, also shows how Swansea saw Daisuke as his own.
swansea is such a profound character and i was so completely taken by his monologue part? like it really is a whole journey of a human being, to get to the place where he is standing on top of his past problems but aknowledges them still and pushes others to do better, to work harder, to teach them all he knows himself, protect and care for those who need it most
