There is more to the story than Tal giving a simple smile. :) From his autobiography: (Tal fans REALLY need to get this book!) "...Fischer first wrote down QR-K1, without a doubt the strongest move, and he wrote it not in English but in European, almost Russian! And he not very deftly pushed the scoresheet towards me. "He's asking for an endorsement!" I thought to myself. But how to react? To frown was impossible, and if I smiled he would suspect ... 'trickery.' So I did the natural thing, I got up and strolled around the stage. I met Petrosian, made some joke to him, and he replied. But the 15 year old Fischer, who was essentially still only a large child, sat with a confused expression on his face, looking first at his second, and then at me. He then wrote down another move, Q-QB6+..." (And went on to lose.) "After the game, when I asked Fischer why he hadn't played QR-K1, he replied, "Well, you laughed when I wrote it down." "
@@sissyfist I think he meant that Fischer wrote it by using algebraic notation rather than descriptive notation (which was typical of english speaking countries). Most European countries would use algebraic in that time, but not Anglo-Saxon countries
btw, if I'm right, then the account given by geonerd (probably an extract from an old english edition of Tal's autobiography) makes it a bit confusing, because it uses descriptive! It should (imho) read "...Fischer first wrote down Re1, without...."

Its three hours since I saw this video, and I've been thinking about the smile and the Fischer's response. Given Tal, he smiled because he was happy for Fischer that Fischer found the right move. Given Fischer, he distrusted that the smile could have meant happiness for Fischer, and instead understood it as Tal laughing at him, and then played the wrong move. Tal smiled a lot, had a very easy and frequent smile. There are videos of him playing with Fischer and his glee at witnessing the game is abundant. Demonstrates profoundly the psychology of chess. Without the "smile" information, this game/video would loose much of it's import. No wonder agadmator has over 200k subs. Beautiful chess presented with well researched background. This is my favourite chess channel on UA-cam.
Thanks for another great video! Regarding the “smile” on move 22, I thought you might enjoy this quote, taken from Kasparov’s My Great Predecessors book: ‘A famous position: it was here that a widely known psychological duel took place between us,’ related Tal. ‘Fischer first wrote down the move 22 Rae1, without doubt the strongest, and wrote it not in his usual English notation, but in European, almost Russian! And not very deftly he pushed the score-sheet towards me. “He’s testing me out,” I thought: would I frown or display my nervousness? I could force myself to smile, but Bobby was no longer a child, he would understand. What then was I to do? I very much wanted him to change his decision. And so I calmly stood up and began walking alongside the board. I shared a joke with someone, glanced for appearance’s sake at the demonstration board and with a contented expression returned to my position. I am sure that all this time Fischer was looking at me, and not calculating variations. He cast one more glance at me (I endured it), crossed out the move on his score-sheet and gave the queen check!’ When after the game I asked Fischer why he didn’t play 22 Rae1, he replied, ‘Well you laughed when I wrote it down!’
I finished today the 1959 Candidates Tournament. What a joy. This channel is my favorite thing in UA-cam. Keep covering vintage tournaments like this please!
No doubt Fischer was amazing and great! But Tal by far was the most magical player. Surprises never ceased and his genius never stopped. What A memorable player 100%.
At 4:29, tall is actually not just threatening capturing knight on A4, but also checkmate on g2 with the queen. And that’s why Fischer responds with his queen to f3 move.
The fireworks still reverberate. Wow! What a game! When these two attackers got together, it was a slugfest from opening to endgame. I have seen this game in print but your analysis makes it come alive. Keep up the good work.

Great game! I would really enjoy seeing more Fischer vs Tal games especially from 1961 onward as Bobby became stronger. Thanks for all the the great vids!
Hey! :) If you're gonna do a few games from the 1960 championship, please consider game eleven. Tal played the Reti as white and slowly bulldozered Botvinnik off the board, ending the game with a nice kingside assult. As I understand it, this game utterly crushed Botvinnik's spirit. Botvinnik could cope with loosing games like 1 and 6, two "typical Tal" madhouse efforts, and he had even rebounded to win games 8 and 9, bringing the score to a 2:3 and himself back in the match. With this momentum, Botvinnik was keen to overhaul the challenger. But to be so comprehensively positionally outplayed in the eleventh encounter left the champion visibly shaking and stunned immediately after the game. Botvinnik didn't win another game, despite having a few very favorable positions courtesy of Tal getting a little too adventurous from time to time.
when i first watched this and was new to amazing chess players and only knew fischer, i was rooting for him. a month later i'm rooting for the great mikhail tal :D so many amazing minds in chess it's insane, i truly have you to thank for introducing me to them thru your channel!
Beside the chess stories, witch I really enjoy, this channel helped me improve my game. I'm not really responsive to chess lessons. I find those really boring. Instead I listened to these stories and what was most important to me, was that mr agadmador explained the approach one need to have while playing chess. The things you need to take in consideration. His perspective on chess was the real teacher, cause I understand now where I have to look to improve and how to more effectively tackle a chess game. Thanks!
15:55 It was Smyslov that Fischer said that about, not Tal. From Soltis’ Bobby Fischer Rediscovered “Bjelica recalled going with [Bobby] to a movie theater on the day Belle the final round to see ‘Lust for Life’ the Kirk Douglas film about Van Gogh. At one point, Bobby whispered to me ‘If I don’t beat Smyslov I’ll cut off my own ear.’ The next day he outplayed the former world champion by move 20 and won in 54 moves.”
You bring back memories about writing the move down b4 you move it. I never did it because it always stressed me out that my opponent could see it and gave him a few extra seconds thinking time each move, which would add up. And back then we used descriptive notation rather than algebraic (1. P-K4 ... instead of 1. e4 ...). Yep, I'm that old. /sigh
Imagine Tal as a general... i think Zap Brannigan said it best: “Turns out these killbots have a killing limit; so, I just kept sending wave after wave of my own men at them!”
Tal is the only USSR Chess master at those time whom got Fischer admission and respects through the heart. Simple, because Tal is reckless and fearless of any challenge. At the same time, their games give Fischer so much advantage to learn.
Connal MacDonald Look at the photos of Tal and Bobby. Those are nice haircuts. Antonio's haircut is just hair. Short, shapeless hair. The standard haircut for all of Eastern Europe.
Hey Agadmator! Love your content and enjoy every video you make! Just in need of advice. I’ve been playing chess competitively for about 6 months in my school chess club. I’ve twice encountered a feeling where I don’t play as well as I usually do. I can play really strong one day, the next I play like I don’t know anything. Any suggestions to help with this issue?
I’m sure you have seen it, but please please please cover magnuses win in the last round of today’s pro chess league. It starts with a double pawn sacc and Magnus doesn’t stop there. Almost immortal game level there...
Bobby wasn’t talking about Tal when he told Dimitrije “If I don’t win against Smyslov tomorrow, I’ll cut off my ear” (Bjelica, Chess Meets of the Century, p. 118). But he did write “If Tal doesn’t behave himself, I am going to smash out all of his front teeth” in a letter to his mom (Marshall Chess Foundation Archive). Also, here’s a rare clip of Tal staring down Bobbby Fischer: ua-cam.com/video/QWs4IT-efi0/v-deo.html
This is the game number 17 on the book "my 60 memorable games". You should read some of the comments by Fischer when analyzing a game featured in this amazing book #suggestion
True. But for this game, he claims he had a win in this game, which wasn't the case. Books written in pre computer era are indeed very valuable, but can contain errors in calculations. No author was immune to this :)
Well, I don't know in older versions but in my book (I bought recently with the amazon gift card :D) it says that he resign after b2... If you want I can send you photos of it
Well, he points out a bunch of mistakes he made.. I think it has some valuable sugestions that could be used in the video, but again, it is just a sugestion
I like that you feature a lot of awesome games, but aren't there awesome draws? Like someone pulled a few suboptimal moves in the midgame and pulled out a draw? The majority of chess games at the highest level are drawn but people get a false impresion about chess if you only show wins.(and man, I love awesome checkmates)
Never underestimate if Tal smile at your move. . Just believe that you became part of magician show. . There can be many Grandmasters but Tal is GrandMagician 🤩

I will cover all the games :)
when i first watched this and was new to amazing chess players and only knew fischer, i was rooting for him. a month later i'm rooting for the great mikhail tal :D so many amazing minds in chess it's insane, i truly have you to thank for introducing me to them thru your channel!
That dog is crazy man😂
Beside the chess stories, witch I really enjoy, this channel helped me improve my game. Thanks!
Who came here after cob commentary
me
15:55 It was Smyslov that Fischer said that about, not Tal.
Aa gaye Samay k bolte hi 😂😂
You bring back memories about writing the move down b4 you move it. I never did it because it always stressed me out that my opponent could see it and gave him a few extra seconds thinking time each move, which would add up. And back then we used descriptive notation rather than algebraic (1. P-K4 ... instead of 1. e4 ...). Yep, I'm that old. /sigh
Imagine Tal as a general... i think Zap Brannigan said it best: “Turns out these killbots have a killing limit; so, I just kept sending wave after wave of my own men at them!”
Stop exploding you cowards!
Thanks a million for showing wonderful games and neat commentary.
Your dog is wild.
Freaking out even before the intro is over.
Damn... A smile changed the whole game. Such beauty.
Tal is the only USSR Chess master at those time whom got Fischer admission and respects through the heart.
Simple, because Tal is reckless and fearless of any challenge. At the same time, their games give Fischer so much advantage to learn.
I really enjoy your commentary! You are such a natural . Well done !
Nice haircut.
Connal MacDonald Look at the photos of Tal and Bobby. Those are nice haircuts. Antonio's haircut is just hair. Short, shapeless hair. The standard haircut for all of Eastern Europe.
The end of a great series :( please carry on doing these mini- series on the channel!
Just play better lol
Your dog is hilarious! Great channel!
Me scrolling down comments to find out what ur dog is doing😂
Beautiful and reflects the best of the best of the game
I’m sure you have seen it, but please please please cover magnuses win in the last round of today’s pro chess league. It starts with a double pawn sacc and Magnus doesn’t stop there. Almost immortal game level there...
Haven't seen it. Got any link to it? :D
here it is: www.chess.com/live/game/2646845964?username=magnuscarlsen
Last 10 moves are beautiful.
Hi Agadmator, thank you for all your videos!
How many more can you keep making these types of videos.
3:38 'Queen captures the knight' is so satisfying, I replayed it 9 times ))
Bobby wasn’t talking about Tal when he told Dimitrije “If I don’t win against Smyslov tomorrow, I’ll cut off my ear” (Bjelica, Chess Meets of the Century, p. 118). But he did write “If Tal doesn’t behave himself, I am going to smash out all of his front teeth” in a letter to his mom (Marshall Chess Foundation Archive).
Also, here’s a rare clip of Tal staring down Bobbby Fischer: ua-cam.com/video/QWs4IT-efi0/v-deo.html
Love your videos! please keep uploading, you have the best documentary!
If you want I can send you photos of it
not saying he won the game, but saying at some point he had a winning position, i do believe agadmator meant
Well, he points out a bunch of mistakes he made.. I think it has some valuable sugestions that could be used in the video, but again, it is just a sugestion
Yeah i agree that reading the book could still be a good read, but apparently i was just correcting a misunderstanding you had about what agad said
I love the dog running in his sleep in the beginning of the video 😁
How can you tell who wins the chess game Agamator is analyzing?
Answer: The winner's quote is always listed at the top.
Fischer was out of the box❣️ i loved how he played 👌
The game of chess teaches more life lessons than all the holy texts combined.

That dog saw his photo in his nightmares and starts fighting
After samay
Thank you for your analysis ♥️
I like that you feature a lot of awesome games, but aren't there awesome draws? Like someone pulled a few suboptimal moves in the midgame and pulled out a draw? The majority of chess games at the highest level are drawn but people get a false impresion about chess if you only show wins.(and man, I love awesome checkmates)
Totally enjoyed this. Yes a beautiful game indeed. The things that can come in mind when fathoming a Tal chess game.
Never underestimate if Tal smile at your move. . Just believe that you became part of magician show. .
There can be many Grandmasters but Tal is GrandMagician 🤩
