This amount may still seem low; however, as the cost of living in Thailand is 4-5 times cheaper than the USA, this money can go a lot further and would be more like $40 dollars/day in the USA which makes it a lot more reasonable.
Actually no $40 is a lot more money there than it is in America. It's A LOT cheaper out there than it is in America and the UK. I know because I am Thai and my family live in Thailand.
To put it in perspective, you can go to a noodle bar and get three bowls of noodle soup with vegetables and meat and everything for around about 100 baht in my family's village which is roughly $3.

it's incredibly sad to me that the environment and the biodiversity crisis takes a back seat in issues for most people, as much as i feel for slave labour and maltreatment of other people, to me without the environment there's nothing and without biodiversity in the world it's not a world i want to live in. To me there's nothing more important than the environment and our earth's ecosystems.
There are definitely too many people who only want to acknowledge one side. I only eat plant foods, research the companies I shop with and try my best to get food from brands that are known to do better with their workers/feed/ethical stance etc. but even then, I know I'm not doing well enough to say my lifestyle is cruelty free etc. Just like there are people who claim to be vegan and only care about animals, there are also people who only care about humans and not animals. And if you don't eat plant foods only, chances are you eat both and have a good chance of still contributing to the underpaid workers who grow and harvest our fruits and veggies as well as te terribly treated workers in animal farms/factories AND the murder of billions of animal every single day. We all cause suffering but we might as well try to change it instead of saying others aren't doing well enough.
I think regardless of being omnivorous/herbivorous we all need to learn more about where our food comes from. Nobody is perfect, but we can always learn! For example, I recently found out that almond milk requires a ridiculous amount of resources to produce. I have been drinking almond milk for years (even before I was vegan) and had not idea what I was contributing to. I made efforts to change what kind of milk alternatives to buy. As long as we are educated consumers, we make better choices!

I want to be a vegetarian but I would have to go all the way to vegan, since ethically it doesn't make much sense because the egg and dairy industry is directly connected to the meat industry, as in animals are still abused in order to make milk and eggs, and dairy cows end up slaughtered anyway.

Because everything doesn't come from the same place, not ALL shrimp is pre-peeled or a product of slave labor, not ALL salmon contain a poisonous amount of mercury or toxins, and the species of salmon used doesn't have to be one that's anywhere near the threat of extinction. At least I'm assuming what they meant.
Agreed I live by the gulf and we peel our own shrimp and other shellfish so that's one tiny silver lining I guess

Well actually, sushi is apparently more of a special occasion food, they don't eat it all the time. My Japanese friends tell me they eat it about twice a month, if that. (I'm no expert, but that's what they told me anyway.) My friends think it's kinda weird how we go out to eat sushi casually with a friend.

Therefore, vegan sushi does not contain any animal products. I wouldn't call myself a vegan if I wasn't eating vegan food, buying vegan products and wearing clothes that are good for the environment.

it's incredibly sad to me that the environment and the biodiversity crisis takes a back seat in issues for most people, as much as i feel for slave labour and maltreatment of other people, to me without the environment there's nothing and without biodiversity in the world it's not a world i want to live in. There are definitely too many people who only want to acknowledge one side.
I only eat plant foods, research the companies I shop with and try my best to get food from brands that are known to do better with their workers/feed/ethical stance etc. but even then, I know I'm not doing well enough to say my lifestyle is cruelty free etc.
Just like there are people who claim to be vegan and only care about animals, there are also people who only care about humans and not animals.
And if you don't eat plant foods only, chances are you eat both and have a good chance of still contributing to the underpaid workers who grow and harvest our fruits and veggies as well as te terribly treated workers in animal farms/factories AND the murder of billions of animal every single day.
We all cause suffering but we might as well try to change it instead of saying others aren't doing well enough.

I think regardless of being omnivorous/herbivorous we all need to learn more about where our food comes from. Nobody is perfect, but we can always learn! For example, I recently found out that almond milk requires a ridiculous amount of resources to produce. I have been drinking almond milk for years (even before I was vegan) and had not idea what I was contributing to. I made efforts to change what kind of milk alternatives to buy. As long as we are educated consumers, we make better choices!

Carrots, spinach, broccolli etc. There are no restrooms in the fields for the laborers so they pee/poop in the fields and it effects the veggies we eat. Dont matter how many times you clean them, they are soaked in urine
