@@jeffreydw1983 depending on what shit box 4x4 you use weekly having a smaller tire as a spare can damage differentials.
The most important mod you can do is lower the vehicle. You want to be no more than 4 inches off the ground. This creates a vacuum under the vehicle so you can climb straight up a cliff at super high speeds.

Vacuum for down force can be enhanced with a front air dam down close to ground with minimal ground clearance as possible. . It will need to be about three feet tall to fit below my jeeps bumper.
Of course a ducted fan type arrangement powered by its own engine can even be used to create a very strong negative pressure under the jeep, You will want side skirt around the rockers to maintain vacuum..
This will allow one to actually use aerodynamics to assist in traction for cornering, and to help prevent roll overs on off camber trails.
The down force is the pressure drop times the area. The jeep is many thousands of square inches,
so even a one psi vacuum will give tones of down force! (so will the weight of the ducted fan and it's engine.
Yes sir, the jeep will not be able to loose traction.
Wheeling is fundamentally all about vehicle down force.
Also if the ducted fan exhaust is directed straight up, even more down force is generated, Youll need good bump stols as your chassis is pulled down by awesome down force, making wheeling, rock crawling especially even better still.
Keep the shiney side up.
You will need to lower your truck to the ground in case of quicksand. Or if you are driving across the Pacific ocean. #AlwaysReady

Worst accessory, is my apprentice, he wants to install himself in a Ranger and spend 80% of his income paying it off.
That's insanity! I got a solid 4x4 for less than a thousand dollars, drove it from Arizona to Arkansas on a cracked head, got it running right for about six hundred bucks, and in the three or four years since then I've put probably about six grand into replacing a few things that wore out and upgrading various things. Both of these categories include the larger engine i put in after the old one blew a rod, and about half the money i spent on it was from an insurance settlement after i got rear ended. They gave me five grand, i spent about a thousand bucks replacing the bumper, tail light, and the entire exhaust system (upgraded to headers) so it was good as new, then added skid plates, a roof rack, new console, etc with the money i saved by doing all this myself. I forgot what my point was... Oh yeah, you should never buy something you can't pay for right then. Credit and financing is the devil's economy.

They are good lads though, all have an old tool box on wheels(van) now and come to work with oil under their fingernails, there is hope yet.

Got a 2012 stx 550 navara what should I do. I got it with a extra fuel tank and upgraded intercooler. I was thinking of a duel battery setup for a fridge and lights, snorkel with diff breathers extended and May be upgrade the bull bar. In future a 50mm lift. I only want to go camping g at Fraser. Morton and straddie in the future possible around Australia trip but that will be a few years away and by then might end up getting a cruiser any way. Any advice would be nice. Ty

Use to rock 15s in my previous vehicle, but I like pizza cutters on 16s. They aren't for the beach but they cut through the mud
I run two rhino awnings because I can't be bothered to turn around in the wind.

I am sooooo glad to hear someone talk about the proper, wheel to tire size for off-roading. I have 17" wheels on my Toyota Tundra, 16" is too small (brake clearance and available options for 35, 37, 40" tires) and 18" is not my wheel size preference.
I agree with Ronnie. Make sure every mod has a purpose and don't do anything just to make your truck look good. Most decent 4x4's require minimal mods to go off road, some, like the Defender, Jeep or Landcruiser 70 are extremely capable just as they are.

Re: hoses. Always say "When one hose goes: replace them all." Somehow I lived 55 years without learning this. It's one of those things your dad, grandpa or sister should've mentioned at some point. I was replacing them one at a time,using up a roll of duct tape and about 50 gallons of water,. It took the third hose in three weeks to make the little light blink on in my head. My mechanic? He should've said something.
So true, we do get smarter with age don't we. I always have a minimum of two extra hoses and belts for everything on my truck. and never seemed to need them, even after 230K miles, but darn glad I have them and the tools to change them.

the only hose that will blow will be the bottom rad hose,,unless you have low water,then the top will blow..heater hoses last forever..yes,if you travel thousands of miles out bush,allways keep spares,hoses,belts,alt,starter.40 lt water.tools.
Same for belts. If your vehicle has more than one belt, change them all at the same time.

Here in the states we see people all the time that have 6-9 inch lifts 22"rims and wheel spacers! But they do ok for getting back and forth from the mall to the carwash. Lol

Ahh, you see in California, we have the lowrider trucks. So think, 32 inch rims, 2 inches of ground clearance, and sometimes stretched tires.

My Disco still has the stock size 18"s. I don;t do rocks, but I do go through some mud and sand. They work perfectly well, but I have been tempted to swap to the stock 16" rims, I am just unsure how it would tow by boat with that combination.

Steel individual steps on trucks where a slider should be. They are just a spot to get hung up.
Man so true. I am currently in Mexico and nearly every damn 4WD has these and they are awful. Some of them stick out so far they are killing almost half the approach angle. All just to look cool. If I buy a truck here the first day I will for sure have to rip off the stupid crap.
My Jeep wj bumper added like 3 inches but also has a better approach angle and more clearance but those 3 inches also let me have a winch
Good sensible advice. Fully agree about the tyre choice, I grew up with the old 7.50 x 16, never bent a rim.
Great video. My contribution - make sure your winch is able to handle the weight of your Rig, keeping in mind the added resistance (weight) from mud/obstacles/mechanical issues.
One of the most common over the top mods I see is low profile, show pony tyres and rims. I doubt if half those vehicles ever see a dirt road anyway, they just looks ridiculous in my opinion. Great episode. 👍🏽

Roll bars behind the cab? Yep I agree! Shiny polished alloy “chrome look” for looks only. You seen how most attach to the style tray.... Via a narrow flat piece of steel. If anyone thought that “roll bar” would serve the purpose it’s name suggests if they actually rolled their car, think again.

I know a guy who has had 3 new 4wd utes, has never been on the dirt let alone a 4wd track, doesn't have any tools or carry much of anything and it doesn't even fit in the garage of their cookie cutter estate house.

Roof rack with only a light bar on it? I absolutely plan on doing this to my vehicle. Why would I carry shit up there all the time? That's really the true crime, always carrying gear on your Ute when it's not doing a trip. I happily carry the swag on the roof when it's needed but I'm not taking the rack off for when it's not...
OutdoorSoHard_69 pretty sure he meant installing a roof rack with the sole purpose of using it to mount a light bar. Obviously if you use your roof rack to carry all your gear this doesn’t apply to you.
@@harrywest6624 I had a guy on a Toyota forumtelling me that I shouldn't bother coming up with a custom cantilever mount for some lights I wanted to install ahead of my stock bumper and grill. His suggestion was that I should do it "Right" and mount my lights to a steel bumper - so, by his logic I should have installed a 200lb bumper, uprate my springs and hurt my handling/fuel economy to mount 12lb worth of lights :D. Of course this is exactly what he chose to do, so it must have been the right course of action lol !!!!
I'm not even sure why I'm here, the only vehicle I own with 4 wheels is a Grand Marquis.
But man, the amount of "offroader", "mad Maxx", and "Rally" Vics and Marquis I see with a roof rack for a $20 eBay light and top mounted tire drives me nuts.
I can fit 4 full size tires in the trunk, the vehicle is like 4200lb stock, why put that weight at the very top of the vehicle, throw off balance, hurt aerodynamics, and leave the ginormous trunk empty!?
But then again, why am I complaining about it here? Lol.
Just been waiting to vent for too long.
I take my rack off every October because it's easier to clean the snow off the roof of the vehicle. Then in May or June when the snow melts, the rack goes back on and I use it. No light bar though.
@@harrywest6624 installing a single roof rack for lights that's fine but a complete roof rack and not using it then it's a waste. I've put single roof rack arms on my vitara JLX just so I could mount my spotties on it

If you have just bought a 4x4, don't spend any money on mods until you have changed all the fluids. That includes the brake fluid and the power steering fluid. It is the best money you will ever spend.
I would add don't mod till you need to and do research. Most 4wd's are quite capable stock. No point in having a snorkel if you're never plan to anywhere near a river crossings.

I think we're getting into the offroad snobbery realm when you can't have a nice roof rack and put a "$300" light bar on it as that is too cheap. Not saying you can't buy a more expensive light bar, but light bars are extra's, they are helpful, not absolutely necessary for 98% of offroaders. But I enjoyed the video otherwise! Thanks!

A row of 10 spot lights on the roof and 6 different aerials. A daily driver with a Kings roof tent, awning, 3 jerrys, maxtrax, high lift jack and shovel all permanently on the roof. You do 1000kms of remote corrugations with all that crap on and it will collapse on top of you. Plus, you're adding 5-6 litres per 100kms at least just lugging it around.

We have a few guys here in the states with this setup - NEVER been in the bush. One guy came to our local offroad club brunch/annual meeting - had FIFTEEN pod lights or light bars (all cheapos) the shovel, hi-lift (with no jack points) 18" rims, even a CO2 air-up system, got his club inspection, then bailed out before we hit the trail (a very low key ride) , no explanation, not even a heads up over the radio - just ghosted us. Guess he just wanted his sticker for the mall crawl :D.
Expedition rigs that will never leave the pavement or even the town. My DD has all the off road tools and fuel cans too. I have been lucky to spend a few years exploring the southwest united states in a big 4x4 camper truck. Oh Yes, the extreme weight of a full size camper really slows you down off maintained roads and totally off many steep trails. The bad BLM or oil company roads can be a crawl but for me that's OK. At the end of the day, just hop in back, switch on the solar power, relax, watch a movie, microwave some popcorn, cook dinner and get some sleep. Yeah, I get about 13 MPG & mostly run biodiesel. There is still a lot of amazing places out there to see, no need to be in a hurry. Just keep moving, keep enjoying life and don't be afraid to get dirty along the way. New Mexico & Texas, perhaps up to Black Mesa for the meteor showers this summer sounds fun.
I want to give a shoutout to the huge flared chrome funnels people put on the end of their exhaust pipes to make them look hi-flow. Those are too funny! 🤣

2WD ranger with Muddies for sure, totally lol'ed over here reading that because its all too common, and that just frontin' because you want the look of a real truck, but a snorkel by itself is better airflow and less dust too the engine regardless, and a lifter 2WD truck on something like a baja claw is a powerhouse in open desert racing, but that's for sure a specific use case and you gotta specialize to your destination and environment.
To be fair, 2wd off road trucks are pretty big in the US. They are for high speed desert driving. but most don't wanna drop the cash for those mods.

Earl McCutcheon I am running into that problem with my RC trucks. It’s very difficult to find a challenge and still have it be accessible and possible. It must be really difficult to find the right terrain for a real trail rig
Well my work truck has that (not a ranger). But I run a lot of bad logging roads, streams and such. I would say that 4x4 is a mod most don't need.
i know a guy who just used glue to stick his snorkel on, he didnt even connect it, and when i asked why he did it, he said he just wanted the looks LOL :P
Yeah see that's stupid, a steel 3" looks good not plastic crap. Bull bar, mud tires, 2" lift. Sure if you like the looks anything else please no.
@@jackomahoney75 Tbh i prefer the look of the "plastic crap" more than most metal snorkels (painted being an exception). They just scream small man syndrome.
The finished stainless people seem to love just looks obnoxious and is of little practical benefit over plastic anyway. Theyve become almost as common as plastic snorkels nowadays so they've lost their novelty value too...

Great video As a newbie to 4 wd and having little technical knowledge my best move was to find a mechanical workshop that gives me sound advice. I found Alltrac 4 by 4 in Adelaide and they have proved invaluable. Even telling me I don’t need some modifications I thought I did

Basically- my stock tire size is 17, 16 will fit but it's a squeeze. Plus the 285/75R17 is a 34OD tires and 285/75R16 is a 33" tire.... Sidewall's the same!
I came here to say that for hig brake kits you need a little room.
I wanted to go down to 15s on my JK from the stock 17s until i found out the brakes would barely fit.

I have an Sr5 that has huge flares and I only run 31×11×15 A/T... they do look pretty extreme but everything is factory minus the tyre BRAND (stock size)
Drive your vehicle off road stock, pay attention to its short comings and modify accordingly. The number of 4x4 modified utes in Australia now is ridiculous - most have not a scratch or a spec of dirt on them anywhere
Agree 100%. Thats exactly what I do. Taught off road driving in the army a million years ago. The "everything must have a purpose" habit still lingers. Only mods on my 4x4 are just to replace the bits I have worn out. Then replace them with "Better". My 4x4 looks pretty ordinary as I don't have any of the snazzy bolt ons. Only carry what I "need".
Same here in America, I see it everywhere nowadays with easily 100,000 dollar jeeps but the frames and axles are still completely black. I wheel my Ranger more than any of those jeeps will ever see

I use a HiLift Jack alot and have been using one for 30 years. I use it on the sides and the front and rear. I build my own bar work though and it can support the entire weight of the vehicle. However alot of people been hurt from using the HiLift but that is because they haven't read the instructions and were not paying attention. I also carry a bottle Jack. That Jack has saved my butt many times.
Spot on Simon. I have 2 and have used the heck out of them. Try carry a winch and battery out in a swamp to pull out a stuck vehicle (UTV 4wheeler) had to do that a time or so. FYI I can lift my "rock crawler" XJ or my LJ side front or back with Hi-Lift too. 👍 Have I stuck a Hi-Lift in new Jeep not yet no way of use damn plastic bumpers. So I'm with you on Hi-Lift jacks. To the point of my second one is a 60 in one the other one is about topped out just getting to rock rails.
Great distinction that you made for those of us who run larger wheels (18-20) but we are running 37-40 tires on RAM 2500, Ford F 250, etc.

I’ll mention myself. Paying $3,000 for HID conversion on my lights from the halogen & then having them fail two years later.
I got cheap eBay stuff that I can replace 10 times and still be under the budget of 1branded lights
Anyone paying $3k for a HID conversion should have their head read (sorry). Most cars of value now will have a version available from factory with HID's or high output LED's.. Either upgrade the car or buy the OEM version, ideally from a wrecker. That's, of course, if you're not happy with a standard LED upgrade available for most vehicles, which then raises questions of why you need so much light and can't go for an aftermarket spotlight, light bar or other setup. I have seen many car owners mount light bars behind a grill, in the bumper, on a plate bracket, etc.
But HID conversions are a sticking point for me because I get absolutely P'd off when numpties modify their lights and don't adjust them properly... Low beams pointing directly into oncoming drivers windscreens.
@Disobey Negatively I'm not sure what you exactly mean by this. There are a lot of ways you CAN install HID's but whether it's 1) legal, and 2) considerate to other drivers is another question. In Australia (most states, I believe), HID's need to be auto-levelling. So if you're using them for your primary/low beam driving lights they need to have that feature. Standard LED's are typically fine, but not high-output. But if you really need a lot of light then high-beam operated aftermarket lights is where you'll achieve the best result.

I just bought the new Jimny. Straight out the car lot and into the bush. It's such a fantastic vehicle! The little mountain goat left the support vehicle behind on her stock Bridgestone 26" road tyres. No fancy mods needed.

What do you guys rate them for motorway? I looked at a Jimny but went for a feroza - needed 1.6L at least on motorway 😅 at least pre 2000.

Replicant Pedals it will depend, I found that the car will not be comfortable on speeds of more than 110 on highway ( it can go faster but I don’t enjoy to cruise at higher than 3000 rpm) For any speed under it is good enough. The seating position is good and the ride is not very bumpy. Some body roll but not uncontrolled on corners. I don’t know what model or year of the feroza you got to compare. I buy the Jimny knowing perfectly what to wait from it and it did not disappoint me on anything and even more it surpassed my expectations. I wanted a Toyota 70 series but didn’t need a car that big, so the Jimny was basically a scale version of a 70 with a few extra gadgets so I go directly and bought a 2020 model. Is my little toy as I have a Mitsubishi Montero MK3 limited a 2018 Outlander (for the wife) and just waiting for the shipping of a 100 series Land cruiser. Now I just need to find a good BJ40 to complete my dream garage.

Well done Ronnie (from a relative newbie from across the ditch) - I have learnt sooooo much from your videos and appreciate the time & effort you have put into them. The more grey hairs that appear on this head have made me realise that virtually invariably there is a simple way & a complex (think big $) way to do something. Regarding awnings I’ve found that a good quality tarp or two, a few extendable tent poles, some ropes, some guy ropes, some bungee cords, some tent pegs & a bit of creativity will make for great site specific awnings when hooked off the roof rack - ok it’s not the 2 min wonder of an awning however neither is it flimsy & likely to be destroyed by a random gust of wind - and it’s not going to cost the earth! :-)

a high lift jack if more than just a jack ... they can also be a very handy recovery tool when you know the proper way to use them.
Besides jacking up the truck to work on, I've used to lift a wheel to put logs underneath when stuck and used to lift an Elk body into the bed while hunting by myself. Could work as a come along as well.
But unless you have bars and bumpers built to be used with a hi lift it doesn't work. I see them all the time mounted on stock trucks with stock bumpers and no rock bars and it cracks me up.
Luke Morter they can be used to lift any vehicle by running a strap or chain through the wheel and around the jack. Also they can be used to winch. I guess you wouldn’t find it funny if you learned how to use one.

13:00 Anyone in a non-automotive mechanical trade knows you can 'tune' any engine to get more power but it ALWAYS comes at the cost of reliability and maintenance. If you race 1/4 mile at a time then yeah, you can sacrifice reliability for power.
But that engine absolutely, positively canNOT be guaranteed to get you home.
If you need more "power", look at lowering gear ratios or adding a Tcase before buying that 600hp crate engine.

Great Video. You make so much more sense than 90% of the video clips made here in the U.S. I have always agreed with 15-17 inch steel wheels and more side wall. Aluminum rims looks great until you break one, as you have shown. Unused roof racks= 2 gallons less MPG here on the freeways. Your so right about the danger of wheel spacers and being a tight=ass on parts that matter. People will always spend big bucks to look cool but have little function when really off road, but the parts that matter, especially those that don't show are the important ones.

One aspect of rarer, larger sized rims is that when you tour remote, there is almost no chance a servo in buttfuck nowhere will stock 19"tyres. They WILL stock 15s and 16s however...
Same goes for the actual tyre itself too- If you bomb into somwhere like Mt Dare or Birdsville and need a 265-285/75R16 or a 265/65R17 they'll have dozens of em in various states of life to supply you.
Try doing the same for a 315/75R16 and your either going to be shit out of luck, or if they DO have one, they'll lighten your pocket by $6-700. I was chatting to the guy at Mt Dare a few years back and he had a bloke come in who had run over a broken off star picket and stabbed massive holes in two of his 35" tyres. He ended up staying at Mt Dare for a week waiting for two new tyres to come in and ended up paying close to $800 each for them by the time they had been freighted up and fitted. Where as with my 285/75R16's he could sell me a serviceable used tyre for $100 fitted.
David McLachlan my used truck came with 18 inch wheels and I hate them. I want 16s but my breaks will only fit as low as 17. It’s too much money to change over the breaks so I’m just gonna crash it and buy another

I tuned my 04 chevy's 4.3L with an HP tuner. Basically just smoothed out the power curve, didn't tune for max performance, more tuned it for stock power with little bit more fuel efficiency. By making adjustments in the rich areas of the stock tune. We also tuned the transmission characteristics with a lil firmer shift over factory, but not full on shift kit hard firm shifts. With all this time in tuning we've seen about a 1.5mpg increase and a lot smoother idle, and fantastic throttle response. Best mod yet.

Ronny, I agreed with just about everything you said except 20" rims being ok on a Ram. Rule of thumb:. Rim diameter no more than half the tire diameter. I run 17" rim with 37" tires on my Ram 2500. Even if I was running 40" tires, i would do 18" at most. 20s just look stupid on anything let alone a 4WD. So, my vote for worst mod is big rims with low profile tires with real ridiculous negative offset....just dumb. We call them bro-dozers here in the US.

How do you know they "never see a dirt road?" Do you follow them around to observe how the vehicles are used? One of the very first things most do (at least those who care about their vehicles) is clean that mud and similar off. My truck is almost four years old and still looks brand new top & bottom.

In my opinion, for ifs you would probably want a front bash plate, plus the usual t-case and fuel tank skid. On a vehicle with solid axles, a front bash plate is just unnecessary weight.
@@gutteherr I disagree, I ve hit my 80 LCs front and rear bash plate loads of times. Its saved me more times than I can count. Granted, I do crazy shit with my 80 but that's what I built it for. It depends what you re doing with your vehicle if you will be needing under armour protection or not.

Agree with your sentiments around wheel spacers, but when we talk about the 70 series cruiser it’s important to acknowledge that -50 offset rims are also illegal which I believe you ran for years.
Unless your in a position to install a new diff it’s a tough decision which is the lesser of two evils?
Good point. Whether you run wheel spacers or wheels with a big offset, same stress on the bearings, the only downside to the spacer is wobble and the possibility of coming off, which are unlikely if you buy good spacers and install them properly.

In a Forum a guy wrote, mode your car when needed. Start soft road then start increasing the difficulty of the tracks step by step. If you keep stucking and shovels are not helping that much install a winch. If you start to stuck because of ground clearance install a lift kit. The one thing before starting that should be done is a steel protective plate underneath the engine. I did so, step by step. Works fine. Thanks for the video. Cheers.

Got my modest 1996 F250 7.3L with some 285/75/r16's, just did ball joints and tierods, got 34 gallons of fuel to carry, and a nice bed for my camping gear. Small front lightbar and some tools in a box, perfect for modest trails and getting some nice camping this summer.

That's the one thing I love about what I presume is the American system with a 35/12.5 R20, the 35 is the actual diameter, the 12.5 is the width and the 20 is the wheel. Just seems far more useful to an end-user than this aspect ratio number used on the metric version.
@@4wdguydrivesby hi Scott. Unfortunately a 2016 jeep wrangler jku sports come with a dana 30 front and 44 rear with a 3.21 gearing. Very under powered for 35s. Havent had a problem with the 20s and airing down though.

@@Mack74 In the states we don't have as much of a tire size limit as you do down under. It is very common to see 35" on vehicles as their first mod. 37" to 40" are for the big boys here who use 1 ton axles for playing in the rocks and mud.

In Australia 50-75mm (2-3 inch) maximum is allowed in lift suspension & wheels combined depending on which state you live in. Any more and you can get booked and your 4wd being declared defective & unroadworthy until you get the height back down which is an expensive/timely exercise if you had a 4 to 6 inch lift & bigger tyres.
