What Is Radiation Shielding?
Вставка

- Kerry Lee, NASA Orion radiation system manager, explains how radiation shielding is used to block harmful particles coming into the spacecraft without producing secondary particles that can cause even more damage.

Wish nasa made more videos like this still. I think it would be really cool if NASA did short documentary style videos on topics like this. Just a lil more details and some examples with in-depth explanations would be great.
There is an error at 0:10 where the video restarts. This is causing the subtitles to desync with the audio.
i saw that
I bet you giant gummi bears make the best radiation shielding
Seems legit
Gamma radiation which elment block any body can tell me

@@idkwhatthisisforplzhelp3678 wow look guys he said the same thing but with up and down caps! Since he said it this way we should laugh! Ahahahah!
Please don't add background music.
Thank you. It's so very very very annoying.
So what shielding did they use in the 60's when we went to the moon?
+hapkidoglock probably none. Moon is kind of protected by the magnetic field of Earth. But when you go outside the Earth system, then's it's another story as you're exposed to direct radiation from Sun
nunya bidness Oh sweetheart, did you forget your tinfoil hat at home today?
try answering the question......sweetheart!........or are you a bit simple?
Gold
They were just built different so they didn't need it.
how you block all cosmic-ray , gamma-ray , x-ray and many high energy particle with only 0.1 mm aluminum fiber shield use in 60s' apollo space suit for 8 day mission in space ??? 😅
You don't. But the flux of each of these is low enough not to result in a remotely dangerous dose during the course of the short Apollo missions (less than 2 weeks).
@@eventcone BULLSHATTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they don't have the technology now and they didn't have it 1969..... what you said makes 0 sense scientifically
@@jaydenwilson9522 It makes perfect sense. There was no need to have Apollo spacesuits block all radiation.
google - earth geocorona.... pure UV is dangerous@@eventcone
@@jaydenwilson9522 No. You brought the extrardinary claim that "they don't have the technology now and they didn't have it 1969".
So where's your extraordinary evidence?
Great explanation. That makes perfect sense.
Useful for when the magnetic pole shift comes and we have to shield a lot more than just spacecraft.
Thanks I'm trying to figure out how to get the government to stop frying my brain with cellphone towers.
You've had three years, did you figure it out?
@@liammurphy2725 sleep with head facing north, listen to good music and block that shit with other electromagnetic waves... no skin cream will protect your DNA lol
Can you school me on this when you find out?
So - did your brain get fried or not?
Kicking the ballistics
Is the radiation slipping through the windows?
Windows are structural weaknesses.
Maybe we should rethink how we look out at space?
Hey kids! Just to be clear, as you travel through the deadly vacuum of space, your spacecraft, your body, and your brain are being constantly penetrated 24/7 from every direction by unfathomably powerful particles. Be sure to apply for those fantasy Mars missions asap, but remember- you can only go once..
Cool!
Soooooo, how did they get to the moon many decades ago without any shielding?....just a thought!
by most of them dying of cancer a decade later.
They didn't, one of the biggest lie ever told.
They didn’t go to the moon
@@itsmetrumpt7330 lol they didn't know about outer space being radiated until the people who went there made raports saying it is. In their eyes were blind spots where the high energy radiation hit, and as someone said they died of cancer. Going forward takes sacrifices.
@@Hiihtopipa The Van Allen radiation belts were discovered in 1958. No people were harmed during the making of this discovery.
What about gold? Gold has a lot of protons and neutrons and yet NASA uses a lot of it as protection from heat and radiation
From what I've seen it appears gold is used as protection for infrared and visible light radiation. However the radiation they're worried about is of a much higher energy level, making gold unsuited for protection.
@@rocketyak4014 Awesome thank you
