This piece is a masterclass in "easy to learn, difficult to master". The notes on the page in this concerto aren't extraordinarily difficult - yes, it does stretch the range on both ends (3+ octaves - pedal Ab to high Bb), but nothing a high school or college trombonist shouldn't be able to play. The fast tempo is challenging, but doable with enough reps. I can play most of this without too much trouble, albeit not close to a standard I'd be comfortable performing. What I - and many other amateurs - *can't* do is play it with consistent volume and tone quality, or consistently avoid cracking a number of notes, or expanding the piece's range by nearly a whole other octave during the cadenza, or rehearsing it perfectly one day and feel confident in repeating that perfection the next day. And I certainly can't do any of that while making it look so effortless. This is where the pros operate on another plane of existence, and I don't think they get enough appreciation for it. This is my favorite rendition of this piece. Bravo.
Well this is definitely an extreme sport. As a musician I think you have to find a balance between taking some risk while still maintaining control. The adrenaline rush together with the feeling of creating and sharing something beautiful with an audience on this level must be truly amazing.
Playing this with a really big sound and clean is where it separates the ok players from the great ones
funny that you mention it can be played by someone in highschool, this was my audition piece for first trombone back in my sophomore year, i got the seat but dropped band in my junior year to focus on photography, still miss band to this day
Holy Cow!! David!! (i used to go to HPBC!!)) I'm learning the piano accompaniment for this piece for band UIL in two weeks.
agreed. i’m playing this in 8th grade and although i can play everything it says to do on the page, it still sounds like garbage
Definition of an amazing performance. Singing the music the exact way he wants it to be played and then plays it on the horn. This recording is wild!!
His sound is absolutely gorgeous! It's on the edge of being over blown, yet it's always controlled. So much power and beauty!
Thank you very much! :-)

As a composer/arranger and non-brass background, the trombone is a mysterious instrument. Thanks for the education. I didn't know the R.K. wrote such a thing. Seems very atypical for him.
For further study, look at the Ferdinand David Concertino, Grøndahl Concerto, Tomasi Concerto, Hindemith Sonata, Sulek Sonata, and Creston Fantasy to name a few and get started.
RK was in charge of military bands for a while. Also wrote solo works for oboe and clarinet.
My dad had a recording of this on LP when I was a kid. (My dad was an amateur trombone player.) That was my first introduction to R.K., and I loved it. I was surprised when I heard the rest of his works. (I love many of them, too, but they are very different from this.)
I hate how he sounds sooooo freaking good!! I could train 5 years and still doesn't have his consistency, articulation, sound, embouchure, dynamic and energy ughhhhhh. God I love this performance so much. Don't mind me, I'm just envious at how admirable he is. I would love to be there and curse him for how good he issss!
idk why but I listen to this every day
It's because it's an amazing piece and has resonated with you as well as me

@@revakavana5423 Thanks :)
@@HnHajin Yeah, you're welcome
I played this piece in recital twice... Bravo on this... It's not as easy as the notes on the page would suggest. Amazing range. And great tone
This is my Solo and I absolutely love it thank god this video exists to help me!
Omg that range, that technique, that tone ahhhhh everything is soooo amazingggggg. Damn I need more practice ...
Thanks for your appreciation! If you look at my channel, you will find many other videos about how to practice basics under the playlist Trombone First Aid... Give it a try!
@@GabrieleMarchetti That's awesome!! Thank you so much, Mr Marchetti! You are a true inspiration!!
Clarinets be like: kill me
They play fast staccato triplets non stop during the first movement.
Of course, one of the best concertos I've heard
Большой талант! Тромбон очень сложный инструмент для исполнения в оркестре, не говоря уже о солировании! Браво!
It's been a while since I've been blown away by a trombone performance.
This was outstanding. Wonderful playing!
Thank you very much! :-)

Dude made literally one mistake that I could notice. he was just being cautious to save his lips for the total performance. Great solo

What a great composition and performance by soloist and ensemble alike!
Amazing! The top notes in the first movement sounded so pure and he made it sound so easy. I'm attempting to do this for my GCSE recital but it's so difficult with braces :( Great performance :)
Thank you for your comment! If you are interested in more videos, please subscribe my UA-cam channel and check the Trombone First Aid series :-)
i feel you bro i'm doing same with braces can't quite reach the high b flat at 2:46
Hey I have braces too, and I’m trying to practice this for a recital type thing as well😂 I think I’m getting them off in a moth tho
PLAY BACK SPEED 2X
I loved that during the cadenzas, you played some of the previous melodies in the improv sections. As someone who has played this before many times (it was my audition to get into my current school), it made me laugh and smile. Great job!

Before the video starts, an ad. Usually annoying, except when it shows you a guy playing Paganini's caprice 24 on the instrument you are about to see. First time I didn't skip an ad. Nice move UA-cam.
Hopefully I will soon be able to play this as my conducted is looking for this peice for me.
This is a very powerful piece. It takes a lot of effort to play it that way, and I'm going to have to try to play it. I'll take your performance as a sample.
I am Japanese.I play the trombone.
His sound is clear, beautiful and so cool!!
I like his sound...!!!!!!!
I must practice more...lol
Thank you very much... We should all practice more!
What a wonderful performance. I played this in a High School contest, and won a blue medal many, many years ago. I remembered how beautiful the music is, but had forgotten how difficult it is to play until I watched this performance. I had also forgotten how many hours of practice it took to learn to play this piece. Great performance! Thanks.

Very fine playing by soloist and band (those triplets in clarinets are HARD!) One suggestion-memorization enhances any concerto performance. Soloist knows the piece well, I imagine the next step to “off-book” would not be hard!
Très belle performance au trombone. Bravo !!!
Bravo! another good NRK piece of music nice passages
The trombonist is amazing. But let’s also respect those clarinets who are playing ridiculously fast triplets for ages! Anyone who’s ever played a fast repeating pattern like that for endless measures understands the difficulty. 😮So exhausting!
I've never seen someone lick their mouthpiece before. Good technique. That horn has a lot of "edge". Reminds me of a thin walled Yamaha.

Chris994601 I’m surprised you’ve never seen anybody lick their mouthpiece.. I have been doing it for awhile now and it really helps when you get dry mouth but it is just like licking your lips in a way. I guess I’m just trying to say that I use this “technique” a lot in my practices.
Now I have someone to look up to when playing my trombone!
Thanks, I'm glad when someone is getting some positive motivation after watching my video! If you're interested in more content, please have a look at my channel and at my brass quintet's one, Italian Wonderbrass :-)

this unlocks a deep memory of trying out for regional concert band ( I made it on a technicality 😂 ) But seriously, this piece is masterfullh crafted to put the trombone out in front. It setd the expectation of trombone glory, then toys with the very idea thereof, right before brilliantly accomplishing what it set out to prove. Mr. Rimsky Korsakov is a genius.
just beautiful...you have an amazing range and beautiful tone

This music change my life
this is the best performance i've ever seen with this difficult piece!
jealous of that high B! keep up the good work :)
Very well played Sir, I enjoyed your playing very much.
I played Trombone for 6 years, 6-12th year at school. I loved my Baritone Trombone with f trigger.
That would be between 1966 to 1974.
This brings back memories. I played this concerto on valve trombone my senior year in high school at Erasmus Hall in Brooklyn!
Great Performance!
Prepiękny utwór
I love your sound-perfect for this piece!
Getting shivers listening. I found my music from high school days ... Makes me want to pick up the trombone again
It sounds so good... Beautiful music and gorgeous trombone!!!!!

After playing this piece 3 separate times (one for high school solo and ensemble, one for an audition for my college music scholarship and another time for auditions in symphonic band) I would like for it to get out of my head. I love this piece, and you play it beautifully, but I never want to hear or play it ever again.
This is such an inspiration for myself as I'm learning the trombone.
Incredible playing sir! Outstanding!!! Thank you so much

Awesome; thank you.
Can’t wait to have to learn this for pmea Districts this year
I got to play this at a our symphony orchestra concert. It was s strange. I went in to the audition not thinking the judges would like it. Apparently they did. Eight people auditioned. After all of us were through with our auditions they announced who would play the featured solo piece at the winter concert. I was chosen. Freaky! The director had a very hard task. He needed to transpose from the wind ensemble to stringed orchestra every part. I was 16 years old. Breathe control and articulation are so difficult on this solo.
This is so great and difficult i love it 💕🤩
Grande Marchets!!!Bravo!Ti sei meritato anche i fiori!!
Ahahah... grazie Max!
This guy is so friggin good
È sempre un grande piacere ascoltarti!
Grazie :-)
I love your tone!!
I like the pulsing accompaniment of the 2nd movement at that speed. It's like "a rusty squeeze box".

Of all the performances of this piece that I have scoured for inspiration in my own performance, this one by far takes the cake. The pedal octave in the stringendo section in Mvt. 2 is probably my favorite of many insanely musical moments of this performance. Thank you for being such an inspiration for myself and other growing trombonists.

i prefer the second movement when played slower
I understand... Here I play it slower ua-cam.com/video/LhweGR2f4Vs/v-deo.html
Very challenging piece. Nobody plays it flawlessly without a single mistake. I think he did as good a job as anyone. Very very good.
Keep in mind Joe Alessi played this piece.
This is not a very challenging piece, in terms of technicality. The only difficulty that arises when playing this piece is playing with musicality :)
