  • In this video, I showcase a major upgrade to my beloved Ibanez SR305.
    I replaced the stock pickups and electronics with Seymour Duncan Bassline Active Pickups and an EMG BQS Preamp. My bass was recorded through my Mesa Subway D800 (everything set flat) through the Mesa Traditional Powerhouse 2x10 (Tweeter set to normal) with a CAD TSM411 mic blended with the DI Out of the subway right into Logic with no post processing of any kind. The Basslines came out sounding much lower in output than the video shows for some reason (possibly poor mic placement) but they are much higher in output than the stock pickups.
    Skip ahead to 4:22 for the comparisons
    The riff I played is the bassline to the song Hilltop Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2
    Let me know if you have any questions in the comments section. Thanks for watching!

    Great vid, definite improvement over stock setup. I have a SR505 and you've inspired me to do something similar with mine. Need to get saving now. Loved the Sonic 2 Soundtrack!

    The stock pickups are a bit boomier and loud at flat, but the SD has so much more clarity.

    Nice work and nailed the tone comparisons 🤙 been playing with the idea of similar to my 305 😅 were there any other preamps or PUs on your to try list that may have sounded a bit different?

  • @stevec6427

    That sounds good. I've got a SR300 and the pickups are ok but a bit weak. I can't get a really nasty metal tone but this sounds like it has potential for me.

    Hey Marvin- I have an SR400, 4 string, that I want to try some new pickups in. Can you tell me which model of Basslines PU you purchased? I'm looking on their site, and can't find one that will fit. My Ibanez has the PowerSpan Dual Coils in it (stock) and they're a bit narrower than the Basslines (Seymour Duncan). Thanks much.

    I would of liked a wiring setup between the two companies for it’s something I would do with my sr805ff

    ...Now I'm thinking :) the ever 1st question I should have asked was: Is it all great to keep the stock electronic EQ, and just put the corresponding small leads after each coulour and solder the +/- black and white? also the battery leads?`and here we go? or is this too good to believe?

      Actually I prefer the K5, especially considering the options you get stock with it. But on a budget it's a great alternative

    I own a SR300 4-string and I purchased these same 5-string pickups to put in my 4-string bass because replacing the 4-string pickup with a 5-string pickup requires less routing than if I replace it with a 4-string pickup. Kinda crazy how guitar companies are making the factory pickups smaller than the upgraded pickups. I bet they do that so you'll purchase a more expensive model?

    • @mobbinator
      @mobbinator  9 місяців тому

      Honestly that's what I always thought. The budget friendly basses usually have stock pickups with odd dimensions that don't allow you to directly swap pickups. But then their higher models usually have pickups that are well regarded. Guess that's how they make their money

    Pickups aside, is the SR305 a solid bass? I’m searching for my first 5 string:) I’m thinking of an Ibanez SR305 Because it’s quite affordable. Best to you.

    • @mobbinator
      @mobbinator  2 роки тому

      I would say to get any bass with a 3 band active EQ. See if you can try them out in the store to get a feel of the weight and the neck. Anything around $300+ should do the job just fine as long as it's set up correctly
