- The signal chain is Fender Blacktop Precision Bass with EMG David Ellefson Signature Set - Orange Terror Bass 500 - Darkglass DG112N and DG410N captured with an EV RE20 and Shure Beta 52 respectively. Both mic signals are blended with the amp's direct output.

They sound amazing - but Ellefson always had amazing tone.
He had that weirdly clean but clanky tone that seemed perfect for Megadeth, it cuts through the wall of Dave's rhythm parts and made his upper register fills and lines stand out like in Symphony and Take no Prisoners. It's great for metal, but with a bit of old-school bass distortion it would work out in a rock setting.
I installed a DC40/CS40 set in my ESP LTD J1005 Deluxe with a BQC System and I literally could not be happier. Fantastic tone and versatility. Oh, and super easy to install. I love EMG!!! Great video!!
Great sounding pickups, I was just recuperating from your video of the Frank Bello pickups ( they sound awesome) & now you hit me with the Ellefson pickups 🤪 EMG make great sounding pickups, thanks Chris.
Glad to finally have a good video covering the CS. I have a couple of 40DCXs in my LTD F-155DX, and I was considering doing one of those and a 40CSX when I first did the install, but there were no good videos at the time with that one in it. I think I'll go ahead and swap one of them out now.

Those EMG's in that Fender BT P bass are GREAT!
A few years ago I bought these exact pickups individually and put them in my Spector 5 string along with EMG's BQC preamp. Great combo. Sounds massive and metal as fuck.
I have a 40dc and 40cs in my 5 atring - not this set but they're in there, and they sound so incredible that I have decided to replace the cheap electronic and pickups in my 4 atring with the DE Set - 35dc/cs.
So much punch and thump but so much clarity. Can't wait!
I love this combo as well, but prefer the CS in the bridge.
I think you hit it on the nose the cs definitely feels like a p bass pup on roids and for me the dc is the same for the J bass pup another option for the cs is the Tw pup witch in humbucking mode is a cs humbucker and single coil is a j cs pup. Awesome video. Also if you want this pickup set and you have a bass with dcs in it all you need is one cs pup no need then the full set.. Cheers guys and killer playing Josh

Really good video, but I think that you have had to test this pickups at least once with a pick, that's the Dave Ellefson sound.

I’ve gone back and forth between DC/DC and CS/DC. Like others, I’ve read/heard conflicting reports about what exactly Ellefson runs. Currently, I’ve settled on the CS/DC for balance and versatility. Yes, it’s great fun to play ripping Megadeth tunes, but if I want to play music outside of heavy metal, the warmness of the CS lets me do just that. It sets me back some, but I’ll even go the extra mile and install the EMG BQS System (active preamp) to get the most out of my instruments. That plus a slight pickup height adjustment and I’m firing to go.
How would you go about wiring these without using the EMG preamp? This will be a first time swap for me going into an Ibanez SR670 and I would like having the mid control that the bass comes with.
This video was very helpful. I'm literally trying to decide on this set or just 2 cs. Do you think 2 CS would be too muddy sounding? Also what do you think about the CSX ?
I don’t have any experience with the CSX yet but I have a feeling I’ll like them. I also don’t think 2 CS pickups will be too muddy. I have two TBTW (equipped with CS) in my Thunderbird and it’s not too muddy.
I would love to see these compared to the Tom Araya signature set. Please and thank you.

I've had the dc in the bridge and a cs in the neck of my 5 string ltd bass for 13 years now. I love it. Now go try their bqs system with the sweepable mids. You'll LOVE it.
Hey there question for you. I upgraded my 5-string LTD bass to EMGs as well, but I went for the B30EQ system rather than the BQS system because on the website the latter said it was for passive pickups, but the DC/CSs are active? I wonder if I could exchange it, esp that The Bass Channel has another video advocating for the BQS.
@seriphyn8935 yes the DC and cs are active. I don't think the controls for passive pickups work with active pickups. I'd email emg. You need that stacked mid pot yo...
@@abowla7187 So I just checked...if I enable the filter for 'Bass Passive EQ' on the website under Parts -> Bass Accessories, the 'BQS System HZ' comes up. It specifically says its for passive or HZ pickups.
But if I google 'BQS System', I can find the page for JUST 'BQS System' (no HZ), and it seems like it would work for my two 40DCXs. That's a bit annoying because I couldn't find it otherwise, where I instead bought the B30EQ system.
Ultimately I swapped out the CS for another DC and added the BTS system. The CS was a little too fat for my liking.

This Ellefson Pickups are a good joke...the big joke joke is : Use them with fingers! (6h later after reading comments to my comment): I dont give a fuck about the Ellefson-'news'... I love his Bassing since the first record (It was 'jazzMetal at this time!). You dont need this shitty pickups because Dave need new strings and his plec and he sounds even with a Höfner-Paul McCartney-Bass like MEGADETH...100%! Elleson RULES!

For the love of God, you can't properly test a David Ellefson pickup set with ONLY fingers! Switching from fingers to pick makes a much bigger difference than switching the kind of magnet inside so PLEASE show the difference in each pickup between finger and pick!

I had the CS/DC set and I can tell you that CS is obnoxiously bad. I can't even sell the damn thing nobody wants it. You say punch I say a horrible midrange honk..
I reverted back immediately to my DC/DC set and am never using a CS again.
I'm aware that David Ellefson is a good salesman and he agreed to sell it as a set but I know for a fact he uses a DC/DC set.
In fact if you go on the EMG website, you'll see the amount of artists that use the DC twin, and in comparison I think the CS has like 2..
Terrible pickup IMHO
You should place the CS at the bridge position.
