Like the legendary Wrecking Crew Luther seldom got credit. Like the Wrecking Crew he was APPRECIATED TO THE HILT BY REAL FANS👋👋👋👋👋👋🎶💫🌈RIP LUTHER PERKINS🎸🎼
Luther play is great here. It has that special tone we love. He is a legend and the only reason I picked a guitar up is because of Johnny Cash and Luther Perkins. Bob Wootton did a great job too at keeping the sound alive and very close to Luther'a style.
In 1969 I bought the San Quentin album, I was listening to Johnny Cash Johnny Winter Johnny Rivers The Beatles WSM radio was the bomb. WLAC radio was the brother station, in Nashville around that time I had the best of all worlds but I remember Johnny Cash cuz he was a badass
this appearance on a tv show was 1968, Luther Monroe Perkins Jnr, the guitar picker died August 5, 1968. The crossed eyed drummer was the fastest country drummer in Nashville and Marshall Grant wrote a great warts and all book as Bassist and longtime manager of Johnny Cash, for a time he sent search parties out looking for Me Johnny when he was Poppin' pills for a while. Marshall Grant 's book was I WAS THERE WHEN IT HAPPENED
@@Psychobilly007 cool. I think Luther Perkins was a auto mechanic that played guitar . It was him that came up with that classic guitar thump sound. He was no professional but it's the simplicity of his playing that made it so good and unique. One of those " less it more " things. He took the basic skills he had and made a sound of musical legend! A fender guitar and fender amplifier, palm muting strings, a little reverb, and some delay. Boom tick tick boom tick tick....Genius!
Meh its both they wouldn't gotten his famous career as a rock n roller if it wasn't for Johnny's writing well (Blue Suede Shoes was a hit sang by evils at first but not the Perkins they got their fame but It wasn't much compared to Johnny side or Elvis) they helped to build people up with them in it too
I only wish Johnny would move his right leg out of the view of Flukes drum kit. R.I.P drum daddy. Your the reason why I wanted to learn how to play the drums.
Miss Emmylou Harris sang 2 of those songs, "I Still Miss Someone", and "Thing's Happen That Way". She did them justice. Love Emmylou. I like Johnny Cash.
Is Marshal playing through Deluxe or a Twin?!! Those guys had their stage volume down to a science! True Professionals. I also had a Sunburst Esquire AND a 1963 Super Reverb. I bought the Esquire for $325 (A lot) and the Super for $250 in 1979 for my new band. The Super is the same amp as the older Bassman but with a reverb spring. Both amps used AlNico speakers NICE! Note: 5881 tubes are just the military version of the 6L6.
Epiphone Newport bass is nicknamed " batwing" because of the head. The 6-string batwing guitars were "Wilshire". Interesting that the drummer is playing right-handed and left-footed. I've never seen that, altho' I know several drummers who play the opposite (left-handed, right-footed)
W.S Holland who is playing drums in this video, He was with Carl Perkins before he went with johnny, he joined johnny cash in 1960, and has been playing drums for johnny cash for over 35 years
Falling asleep while smoking a cigarette was the cause of not only many house fires, like in Luther's case, but many hotel, motel, and apartment building fires in those days, when most people in the US smoked. It's especially difficult to extinguish a fire on sofas or mattresses.
@@reeceblinman7469 Actually his was a 1963. He received his in mid 1963. Prior he was using a Fender Concert amp, and a Fender Super amp with an external tank. He switched back and forth between them. He also used a Bassman head with a speaker cabinet here and there
No one can replace Luther Perkins
Amen
The Perkins lead WAS the Cash sound. The beat that captured a generation!

And Marshall and W.S. we're great in this video also.
Yes, I agree!
GRG | Get Rhythm I got a chance to actually meet W.S. and Marshall via telephone, as I looked up their numbers, but I got to know them.
Wow, how cool!
Luther Perkins was the backbone....
This had to have been one of Luther Perkins last tv performances being that he passed away in 1968.
killed by a cigarette fire
@@knowmusicman157 Yes at home. Just like Steve Marriott of The Small Faces and Humble Pie. Such a sad way to go.
Must be the only color TV show of Johnny Cash with Luther Perkins, and Marshall Grant.
No, there are 2 or 3 other clips.
Johnny Cash is using a special edition fender Malibu guitar originally it was given to Luther Perkins but Luther gave the guitar to Johnny Cash to use
It’s a newporter

Hard to beat Luther Perkins
Or Marshall Grant or W.S. Holland.
I look up to Johnny cash he's a legend.
It's more than music, Johnny puts depth of soul in every song he ever did. That is what made him a STAR!🌟
Man...That dude had a great voice!
From Starkville, MS. Johnny Cash was the greatest man to ever pick flowers from that lady's flower bed!
Love that Tennessee Three sound!
Never be another Luther Perkins he had his own style. They all did

Johnny has a book man in white
That unique guitar picking style Johnny had. Mesmerizing....
Iknew all of Johnny's family in Maryland lived on the same street they did, loved them! Missed Tim Gentry the love of my life!
Outstanding performance
It’s not Johnny Cash that makes the sound....it’s Luther Perkins 👍🏼. Not a fancy picker, very basic, but a tonal genius!!!
Thank you. I’m doing a project and this comment was very helpful

Understand Your Man would’ve fit so well after I Still Miss Someone, but then I’d be crying instead of writing.
The guitar that made Johnny Cash famous.
this guy was definitely A ring of fire all by himself . What a Great Legend .
2:54 Train beat strumming sounds awesome!
Really GREAT, Johnny Cash!!!
Awesome singer that voice !
"Ring" was written by June Carter Cash. She recorded it with a harpsichord.
My dad has a Malibu that exact same model. He likes it. It sounds great.
You're lucky man.... Surely it will be better sounds by age 👍👍👍

Mr. Cash is just playing with his guitar.
Marshall Grant with the fender P-Bass? Looks like Epiphone to me....
🔥🔥🔥
Great
You're right itis a Epiphone bass not a Fender!
Fun fact: This was the year Luther Perkins died. He set himself on fire in his sleep. R.I.P Johnny, Luther & Marshall.

I think this is 1967 late 67 Johnny looks too thin for it to be 68. He still has wedding ring on too from his first wife vivian liberto.
Good music
Am I crazy or does Johnny Cash look a bit like a younger version of the man who plays Dr John Watson in Sherlock Holmes?
There's not just one day in 1968 you know.. there are 365 of them, he was there for part of that 365, you know what I mean...?

JOHNNY CASH
Luther 🎸 Perkins
Marshall Grant
W.S. Holland

JOHNNY CASH TE BEST

Im quite sure, that's before the Folsom album.
It is so, it's a pity that Luther did not live to see the Folsom Prison Blues album.

Tom Frost I think it is a Bassman Amp
Luther is using a ‘65 Fender Super Reverb’

Ring of fire, I walk the line, Folsom prison song.
What kind of epiphone is marhsall playing here?

No. Not Luther Perkins. *facepalm*. Marshall Grant the Bass player...
Looks like an Epiphone Newport to me. Rarely seen these days. Great instruments.

ya this is late 67'...johnny real thin
And he looks very young
Florida Georgia Line? Rap country? Bro?
Looks like a Danelectro to me
Why played Johnny Cash at te neck of his guitar?
Niels van Lopik because that is his style of playing
Luther Perkins had 1000,000, Jhony had only one, taking away Jhony's importance is ignorant
John looks thin, pale, and out of it. His bad time I think.
