An American Motocross Legend that inspired thousands of us. A great hero to look up to. God speed to you and your wife. I had my XR -75 painted up like his factory bike ...every day I'd go out and just jam as best I could on my 2 acre track and be like a rider for Team Honda. Marty really inspired me to race after getting a 1980 RM-125 it was white knuckles only. ..the powerband was insane just like the 250 was. I lived, ate, drank slept motocross. Posters on the walls magazines all over the house. ... I know I got some exact friends out there. R.I.P. Marty.
You went from Honda to Suzuki? how dare you! just kidding, thank you for your thoughtful words on Marty Smith, very sad, those were just fun, innocent times, my heart just bleeds for what's happening in America right now.
5/1/20 Thanks Heather for the good memories of the 70's, sure was a great time to be alive and riding with very few boundaries. Sad that both Marty Smith and his wife passed last week RIP.
I have heard a couple interviews with Pierre Karsmakers, where he gives great credit to many of the rising talent of his American competition. Have not heard him mention Jimmy Weinert yet though. :) I don't think they got along at all.
He was my neighbor here in San Diego California. He was always the guy on Halloween to give out full sized candy bars. When ever I drove by he was out there with his dogs and waived as I went by. I ride dirt bikes where he crashed in Glamis California. This is a huge blow to me to know that this could happen to me. One wrong move and your dead. He never said or let anyone know how famous he was and worked hard for the sand car and diesel pusher he had. May his spirit and will for the sport live on and thrive.
@Roger Clemons Yes alpine he lived 3doors down from me. No my dad is CHP and nobody I know is dumb enough to ride a murdercycle in traffic doing tricks and racing. I’m talking about on my way home from school in a car when I saw him. Only time I ride is at the desert during major holidays.
@Roger Clemons Correct and well said Rodger. I was 10 when I began to follow Marty in 71 I believe he was Honda's front man for the all new Elsinore models. And when I began too show up at race's it was dominated by Elsinore's till the 75 yz 's monoshock rolled out. (I maybe off a yr or so?) Those days were great because I could ride my RM to the track 20 miles away and pay $15 to race, never won though. Great time to be a kid!

A star gone. Rest In Peace.
he was a family friend of mine, so sad.
@Roger Clemons You can still go out there but there’s no law enforcement and it’s at your own risk. A risk that became too true to many.
Roger Clemons glamis is open
One of my fathers heroes a sad day in Motocross. 😢😭😦😧

Marty could school some of the last generations in simple humility, we all need too work on. RIP Marty, Mrs. Smith.
