There was a series on Discovery channel a few years back called Storm Chasers that followed 2 or 3 groups of actual tornado chasers around. One chaser designed a car that could be driven into a tornado to take measurements.

The 90's were a magical decade for natural disaster films. Twister, Dantes Peak, Volcano, Backdraft, Armageddon, Deep Impact, Volcano: Fire on the Mountain, Earthquake... as a young boy my early movie diet consisted of almost nothing else besides 90 minute by the book disaster flicks 😂

This movie inspired entire generation of storm chasers, Reed Timmer among them. That's why when Bill Paxton passed, storm chasers gathered in Oklahoma and spelled his initials with their GPS signal beacons on radar - a tradition only among storm chasers when one of their own pass away, so by doing it - making this sole exception - they claimed Bill to be one of their own.

I saw this when it came out in the theater in Kansas. As the credits came up someone walked in and told us there was a tornado warning for our area. Every chuckled and walked outside to the sirens blaring. We jumped in the truck and headed home through rain, lightening, and hail. It was a very surreal experience.

Give a lot of yep like a freight train combined with a jet engine and it's even worse when you're laying in the bathtub waiting for it to go away. I probably don't have to tell you but whenever that sky turns a shade of weird green it's time to GTFO.

I've heard a tornado, and that freight train sound was coming from up in the air slightly to the southwest of me. A couple of minutes later the wind got pretty dramatic. Two tress knocked over in the yard by the roots. I wondered if the sound has to do with the air currents swirling up in the funnel. Maybe mixed with a sound from the powerful upward suction? The sound was not ground level.

      Jeanne 2004.
Frances gave us a slow wallop for almost three days, then Jeanne plowed in 22 days later with an eye that made landfall like two miles from Frances' eye.
After a summer hurricane passes over you and leaves, those next few days without power are always at least 98 degrees with 90% humidity. Fun times.

As an ex-meteorologist, they generally did a pretty good job on this movie, thought some of the stuff is a bit outrageous (it's a movie anyway!). The only major flub is in the beginning (set in 1969), when someone says the tornado looks like and F5. The Fujita scale for measuring tornado strength was not created until the 1980s, so they were move than a decade early on calling it an F5.

This definitely inspired a lot of people to become meteorologists; one of our local ones talks about it all the time. That being said, people who have lived through tornadoes all describe the noise as sounding like a freight train was driving through their living room. So yeah, they definitely altered it to give it a little more of a "growl," but for the most part, that deafening roar in the movie is actually pretty close to the real thing. I once watched a tornado that was roughly 6-8 miles away (and moving the opposite direction obviously), and even at that distance you could hear it.

Disaster movies became popular during the 70s until Airplane! (1980) parodied the genre. Twister led a resurgence in the latter half of the 90s w/ the help of improved visual effects before 9/11 slowed things down again: Independence Day, Daylight, Dante's Peak, Volcano, Titanic, Hard Rain, Deep Impact, Armageddon, etc...

As somebody that is from eastern Oklahoma this was always a very appreciated film because it represents the area but also I consider it a horror film because I’ve actually lived through tornadoes on more than one occasion. This movie reminds me of those experiences. The funny part is when we hear that there’s a tornado watch, we don’t stay up all night and worry about it. We just go to sleep with our weather radio set to alarm us.

It's eerie, everything gets real calm, the sky turns a sick green, there's a particular smell that I can't really define, and the hair on the back of your neck stands up. Then Boom! All hell breaks loose.

The most bizarre thing was that the actual light, the air around you, it was distinctly orange somehow. And for a while, everything was dead calm, which was probably the scariest time of all. When the wind started picking up and the rain came, that was when you started to feel like you could breathe again. It was still a crazy storm, but you felt less like the literal hand of god might drop on your head then.

Hello, tornado geek here (I’m sure there are others in the comments, I just did not find them). Yeah, Twister definitely had an impact on the weather and storm chasing world (it surely did on me)! For instance, the “Suck Zone” is definitely a term that still floats around today among chasers.
Overall, the movie is not very scientific (ex. going under a bridge to protect yourself from a tornado, strapping yourself to pipes to survive a 300 mph, debris filled, mile wide monster along with a few more things), but it still is very enjoyable even from a weather enthusiast’s perspective. Especially given the fact that the Dorothy instrument is a direct reference to a real storm chasing probe called TOTO (Dorothy’s dog in the Wizard of Oz), which for a period was used to try to study tornadoes. The twisters themselves, at least to me, still look extremely good and pretty realistic. The animal roar is probably just an hyperbole of the fact that when you hear the rumble of an incoming tornado, that gets defined as a “roar”, but it just makes them more like a living being, which I can totally get behind.
If you compare it with other natural disaster/weather/tornado movies, it definitely stands out because it’s not too much out of proportion (like The Day After Tomorrow might be), it doesn’t have over the top CGI (like for example the most recent Into The Storm, which IMO, has waaay too much exaggeration on the tornadoes) and it’s not complete BS (I’m looking at you, Sharknado). Compared to many other movies of its genre, it’s pretty down to earth with just some scientific issues here and there, but it’s Hollywood, you have to twist some things around.
And to end this long comment, the story is just crap. Nobody wants to hear about the divorce papers, we’re just all here to watch cows getting thrown around and Bill Paxton trying to get a can full of balls into a tornado. RIP Dusty and Bill “The Extreme”, thank you for helping making this movie what it is!

We had watched it on VHS that morning when it came out...and then the cousins, friends and other family trickled in all day long that Saturday. Every time we were done with the movie, a new group of people would kind of come in and be like, "What are you guys watching? OH Twister! I moved to central Oklahoma about a year before this film came out. It was largely shot in this area, so the post-production was a matter of local interest. The CGI is unbelievably accurate: if you pull the camera back to a couple of miles' distance and drop the dramatic music, it looks exactly like what you see on the local news. The tornado that hits the drive-in theater is what's called "rain-wrapped". This is one of the most dangerous types, since the tornado itself isn't visible within the rainstorm . . . until it's too late.
The TV weatherman seen in the opening was the actual chief meteorologist for the Channel 9 news. I used to work in an office with the girl who sold Helen Hunt ten cups of coffee in the drive-in scene.
