I’m not a huge thanksgiving person but I do love cornbread, mashed potatoes I kinda do love ham and pumpkin pie. But this year in at my house in Texas, we do some carne asada with fresh ingredients and beef.
I never thought of rhubarb pie as a Thanksgiving dessert, because the peak season for rhubarb is in the spring, not the fall. It’s also usually baked together with strawberries to cut down on the sourness.
Exactly! Some people know how to make a fantastic pie. My husband makes the best apple pie made just apples sugar cinnamon & dough. But it is incredible. Bc of the ratios he uses of each ingredient. Yum!!!
My mother, German by heritage, made rhubarb pies (and wine) from the plants we grew in the garden. Later, I grew my own, they are huge leafy plants, and made my own pies up until recently. When made properly it is a delicious pie. First, soak the stems, then boil them to soften the fiber, then add the right amount of sugar and spices (some people add strawberries as a softer side to counter the acidity, but soaking and boiling removes a lot of that), then make the pie. There is a huge difference between homemade and store bought, and all the Moms should have the opportunity to taste a real rhubarb pie. I could also tell you about apple schnitz pie, but then the apple pie would get jealous.
rhubarb needs a lot of Sugar other wise its Really Bitter As a Norwegian we eat rhubarb A lot We make it in a lot of Stuff But it needs A lot of Sugar other wise Its Really bitter
I had rhubarb pie in the Netherlands, from a german-owned confectionary and bakery. At first I had the same reaction, but then I kind of got accustomed to it. But I gotta say it does taste better with some grape or blackberry jelly/jam mixed in
Happy Thanksgiving to all!! you forgot two Thanksgiving pies although they're more regional. So out in California they may not be available. But very big down in the south of course is pecan pie And many families like sweet potato pie
My paternal grandparents always had a massive rhubarb plant in the yard, so there was a lot of rhubarb and strawberry pie served, usually made by the neighbour (a lot of collectivism in these parts of Canada for that generation, as a means of survival, as my grandmother would make the savoury dishes and the neighbour would bring the great baking and EVERYONE, including drop-ins and farm help and friends and even wayward Mennonites dropping in to watch some television, would get to eat). I've never had it without the addition of strawberry, and always thought it was amazing! I also have a palate that does favour more sour flavours than some, perhaps because of all of this early rhubarb. My mom says she always found rhubarb unbearable growing up. Likely her family were not as adept with it as my dad's neighbour's growing up. But for poor farming families growing up in the Prairies before globalisation, stewed canned rhubarb was one of the better sources of vitamins in the winter months. I'm sure that might still be the case in some communities today.
Also, a key aspect of the Rhubarb/strawberry combination was that the strawberries were usually frozen, because the growing season was sooooo short, and that added something to the melty texture of the pie, with the crisp crust and hopefully some vanilla ice cream on top.
Im Dominican so I grew up calling bananas guineos and for us platanos are the ones we fry or boil. So watching this hearing them call the bananas platano was a bit confusing but it just goes to show how different our dialect can be even though we speak the same language.
@@Dangic23 lmfaoooooo I know that carribean Hispanics have a different dialect but this was a bit shocking for me. I was like why are they calling bananas platanos. Pero yo soy dominicana y el plátano y los guineos amarillos para nosotros son dos cosas diferente.
Just started video but I must say cool whip is a must! Rhubarb should have strawberries in it to balance the tartness. Do you know how long it takes to grow Rhubarb?
Americans puts cloves and cinnamon in apple pies. We often make pies for after church on Sunday. We usually had pork on Sunday in the South. Cloves has antiseptic properties which protects us from parasitic worms that might have been in the pork. Metaphysics in plain sight buried in tradition.
I think it’s because of how easily apples grow. They grow all over the United States but didn’t originate here. Everyone in my neighborhood has apple tree. I can make apple butter, apple sauce, apple cider, apple cider vinegar, apple pies and all types of baked goods, including apple cinnamon rolls. Apples are plentiful and you can make a lot of sweet treats with them and apple cider vinegar is very useful too.
LuLu reminds me of my mom and sister. I'm the conservative, reserved individual and my mom and sister don't hold back and speak their thoughts. I secretly wish I was boisterous like them...lol
Pumpkin crunch is THE BEST dessert. Iykyk!! Where was the pecan pie?! Imo, all the fruits and nuts were made into pies because it's the least favorite fruits or nuts and had the biggest harvests
I think it would be interesting for them to try apple pie recipes from very old cookbooks like you have seen made on Townsend or Ancient Recipes just to see their responses
I can't be the only one who doesn't care for Lupe (in the pink sweater, not to be confused with Lulu) She just doesn't add much substance. I wish they would swap her out and bring back Alicia. One of my favorite OG mamas ❤️
Rhubarb is meant to be served warm, with a side of soft serve to cut the sourness. Only a masochist is going cold/no ice cream! 😄 You did those mamas dirty!

Rhubarb can be harvested into the Fall
