i really agree with everything you said but with particularly with your criticism about the changes in Ellie and Joel’s dynamic. Ellie’s passivity and relative lack of independent capability in the game (especially in the beginning) did so much for the story and i feel the need to rant about it a bit. i think this change is such a detriment to her relationship with Joel. in the game, Ellie truly needs someone like Joel to teach her things, set her straight her when she’s being naive, and help her survive. (this is still somewhat true in the show but as you pointed out she’s much more proactive and independent). the fact that she genuinely needs someone like Joel in order to navigate her life makes it so much harder for Joel, who’s a parent at heart, to resist wanting to be that for her. and that really fuels his internal conflict about his growing attachment to Ellie vs his fear of watching history repeat, experiencing the pain of losing a daughter all over again if something were to happen to her. it’s because she actually needs him so much that he feels so naturally inclined to become her parent figure. but it’s the fact that she’s (especially at the beginning of the story) so helpless on her own, that Joel’s fear of losing her if he starts caring for her feel so imminent and real. both sides of Joel’s internal conflict surrounding his relationship with Ellie are heavily influenced by Ellie needing his guidance, and the show really lost that by making her feel more independent. also, im so glad you brought up what i also felt fell flat about Bella’s performance. watching the show there were a lot of points where i couldn’t help but feel like she wasn’t experiencing half the amount of emotion that Ellie from the game was, and i agree that a lot of that is due to her line delivery. i believe she did what she thought was best with what she was given, but i think it was a poor choice for the directors to purposefully tell her not to play the game or watch the original scenes out of fear it would take the originality out of her performance. because i think she could’ve really used a good helping of Ashley Johnson’s influence to better bring out the nuance of Ellie’s character, both with the aspects of her that are more mature and the ones that are more naive. it’s funny to say this given that one is from a video game and the other from a live action show, but Ellie from the game felt so much more realistic to me. but even so i did enjoy the show and liked the majority of the other things that differentiated it from the game (also lastly just wanted to say i love seeing this type of content from you. you never fail to have the most based opinions and ily for it)
A lot of valid points I haven’t seen it yet because I’m just apprehensive of it. While I don’t think it’ll be bad because i do like the casting Ellie they chose was a bit of a weird choice because she didn’t seem like a Ellie to me. But I was worried about the story and the source material for a franchise like this. It’s so vastly different from what you get with walking dead or some other zombie or zombiesc shows. I could already see the non fans comparing it to walking dead and the familial relationship between Joel and Ellie is such an important one narratively and from hearing what’s been presented I’m not too sure I’d probably drop the show because of just the dynamic switch. Joel was Ellie’s teacher and Father not something she can just direct or clown, I’ll still watch it but I’m going to take my time and not be nitpicky about it.
The show is in an interesting spot as I watched it with my family and was so in love with the show I final played the game like after episode 4 so I was like playing it as I watched so I got a good comparison, and we’ll I agree with some points I disagree with others. I do think Bella did a good job as Ellie it’s just some scenes not as good. Will say episode 3 has still stuck with me and might be my favourite live action tv episode ever, like I know it’s different than the game but gosh dang it’s a masterpiece, if it was a standalone movie it would win the Oscar’s as its there type of movie. It’s also interesting seeing your opinion as I know other die hard who adored it and like some of the stuff you hate. Like to me I still have both the game and show probably top 10 respectively but I see less shows and know the games better but there are some stuff with the show I like more. For example Joel is better written in the show as a standalone character, like I mentioned this to my family and as I played the game but he reason Joel went to get the gun and told Henry to stop is because he had the same thoughts and I’m so happy they added that in the dialogue and story’s. Joel is some times to much of the not the driving force like you mentioned but I still love what they did and think it’s a great show. Also by far the best tv game adaptation and on that scale a lone a 10/10 as no comparison lol. Also just so you are aware the internet loves the show on IMDb it has 8.9 which for tv shows is so so so rare and has also has some of he biggest review Bombing in history with episodes 3 in particular, which if you didn’t know almost all the reviews are 10 and then 1 to average out to a 8.
I give the show a 5/10, it's closer to a 6 than a 4, but got it messed up so much. Ellie especially is horribly written and directed. Her casting is less of an issue to me compared to everything else. All of the 1:1 scenes with dialogue in the show is not as good as the moments in the game. For example, the part where Ellie stole Bill's gay porno mag in the original was really funny, and even though the script in the show was the exact same, the whole thing just did not have the same punch in the show. It seems like the show was more concerned with making Ellie a strong female lead, rather than a good character. Like she was strong and a badass in the games, but that did not mean that she was also vulnerable and still a 14 year old girl who is smaller and physically weaker than basically everyone around her. Also in the game Ellie went from somebody who was innocent, eg: not wanting Joel and Tess to kill the security guards at the beginning of the game, to being forced to learn to kill others for her own survival. Meanwhile in the show the director wanted to convey to the audience that Ellie actively enjoyed watching Joel kill the security guard which shows that the director did not understand a single thing about Ellie's character nor her characterization. The best part of the show was its side characters. Bill and Frank's episode, although not needed for the overall plot was beautifully told. And Sam and Henry, were also more interestingly written and are one of the few parts that I felt was actively better compared to in the game. You are correct about episode 9 though. That was basically the only part of the show that was 1:1 with the game that was also as good as the game. My only issue with that episode is that it felt a bit rushed.
I heard somewhere that they didn't let the cast play or watch the original last of us before filming and maybe that would have helped the actress for Ellie have the same spirit as her since she would understand what she's trying to portray, but I do agree about the line delivery being off a lot of the time
I disagree with about half of your points, but they were presented well and it's good to hear a different perspective. I haven't played the original since I don't play many narrative heavy action games, so I don't have much of an attachment to it. I think the ending to E8 was really good, giving Ellie a moment before being comforted made it feel more impactful and also the contrast from fire and action to snow and quiet looks better imo.
The video got falsely Copyright Struck from Brazil and is now blacklisted by UA-cam because of it... Would appreciate the Like and Share if you think it's good though. I enjoyed making that one
this is why nobody takes you people seriously cause joel and tess literally share a bed and the ONLY gay relationships on screen are canonical ones from the source material. nothing was even changed and you chuds still cry 😭 good riddance shuckmeister too since he’s committed to stop reading jojolands after the latest chapter 💀
The show is Neil unchained and it shows. Thank god Bruce had more control over the game. I still don’t buy Pedro and Bella’s relationship cause the time the show wasted. The ending just felt like a way to make TLOU2 more justified for whats to come. The infected became an afterthought, Bil and Frank’s episode was just TLOU fanfiction. Not to mention how spore were taken out of the equation, so if all you have to worry about is getting bit or watching what you eat, I don’t see how humanity lost as hard as it did.
As far as adaptations of video games goes, I think this was fine. It’s watchable. However there are still many parts that are poorly written, and it’s success with the general audience is just a testament to the complete lack of standards when it comes to writing. Things doesn’t have make sense, so long as they seem vaguely emotional.

Bro I'm sorry for the person who DID play Abby.
She fit the role. Too bad the role was shitstomped by bad writing.
