- Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button and teammate Jimmie Johnson and Mike Rockenfeller finally got to turn official laps in the Garage 56 NASCAR Chevy Camaro ZL1 Cup car during the test day for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which comes after one year of incredible effort by Hendrick Motorsports and the rest of the project's partners to bring the program to life.

Been watching since the 80s. It's NOT THE SAME but I really like this next generation race car. More sports car than nascar ever has. And that is the 24 race car I painted for my son. Dupont paint rep got me the ACTUAL COLORS BUT NO PAINT FORMULA TO MIX IT lol
You're missing out! The newer racing is pretty good but the older races is much better!!

Never got into Nascar. So?
I love how genuine and chill Jenson seems to be, and anyone who goes outside their comfort zone and races all the things has my vote. Glad he enjoys and tries racing outside of the F1 bubble. Hope we get to see more of him racing in the US and interested to see how this goes even though I'm not usually into NASCAR/stock cars.

5:00 Jenson does a good job of describing how G56 will bridge the gap of fandom. I wouldn't normally watch Le Mans but I'm so excited to see how this project turns out.
Watched it live for the first time last year and Corvette was doing well until after mechanical issues and crashes they had to retire both cars. They're the top of GTE class this year so I'm excited to see them do well this year as well.
I have been watching Le Mans since the 80's, but this car and Jenson Button is something special.

Another brilliant video Marshall, Jenson's been one of my favorites ever since. I started following Formula 1, and I'm over the moon that he's involved in this great project!
I've seen this car during tests this afternoon and surprisingly it's not ridiculous regarding its weight. I can't imagine the noise with fourty like this on a speedway... 👍
I heard just that last week and after 5 or 6 laps you don’t hear it anymore it’s just a constant roar and then you feel the rumble through your chest when they go by
It's faster than all the GT cars. We need to see it at The Rolex, too.

It's not when you think about it. This car is made with way more tech and money than GTE cars. NASCAR cars aren't just big cars with big engines. And this project has been optimized for this race.
@@djoetma absolutely, watching that tech walk around with Pruett was awesome. Very eye opening, from getting 25% lighter, doubling the downforce, moving the engine further back into the firewall, all of it! Very sick, so pumped and I hope it gets through all 24HRs in one piece 🤞

Probably going to be the best sounding car at Le Mans this year. Hoping the night time will add to its repertoire, any thing flying, flame spitting, glowing and with volume is a delight.

@@AJS86 there's already a caddy in wec. Plus they're bringing over the 2 imsa cars for a total of 3 Cadillacs. I might be wrong but I think Porsche brought over an extra lmdh from imsa. BMW and Acura aren't doing le mans this year. BMW will do wec next year.

If I have one complaint, I wish there were two more of these monsters out there, to make it a REAL race. I remember back in the days of the IMSA Monzas and Corvettes (and yes, even Mustangs) -- there is NOTHING like a group of American V-8s all running at full song to just make your blood boil and your pulse quicken. I just want to see this car still running after 24 hours, it should be GREAT FUN!
Yes, but I think garage 56 is for 'one it's vehicles. I believe that is where the three wheeler gained it's place on the grid. They would have to make a class for these vehicles. It would be loud though!
@@simonkevnorris yeah, garage 56 is saved for one off or experimental entries like the chevy or the deltawing, i seem to remember a year or 2 ago people discussing a red bull hydrogen car getting the g56 spot at some point. not sure they would need a new class for modified stock cars, from the sounds of it with a lil bit of BOP adjustment they would be able to run fairly competitively with gte/gt3 cars which would be awesome

We need that body kit for our street cars! That car looks amazing. We have a road course that has test and tune on Wednesday nights and open racing some weekends. Once people in the States see that, it will be the talk of the race for the US. Good Luck Jenson, Jimmie, and Rockenfeller! Focus on finishing!

N24 had the foxtail and dacia, now lemans has nascar. Nice to see even amongst the new prototypes, motorsport still has some "oddities" and special classes, even in the biggest races of the year.

@@JakobM325Well it would probably br way too loud and too fast as well. They are faster than the GTEs which are already too fast for the Ring.
@@Maenfy No way. The problem is that it doesn’t stop very well and the Nordschleife is hard on brakes.

Well, it's endurance. So we have to wait and see how well it will hold up over time. But a NASCAR is a hugely powerful car that has been optimized for this race. Aren't they tech-wise kinda like old-style DTM or what they do in SuperGT? As in that they are really technologically advanced? Not just huge cars with huge tires and a huge engine.

As an American, I have to say I'm not a fan of NASCAR, BUT I have to admit I was thoroughly impressed with the cars performance. Let's hope Jenson can bring the team the same results he did with another team, Brawn GP!

There is a YT clip up showing the Garage 56 Chevy running in a practice session. It was impressive, even in the chicanes. Lots of forward bite coming out of the turns. But I can see how it will be at a disadvantage on the long straights due to the high mass and aerodynamics limitations. I hope they can successfully finish the race in this beast. But just the fact that Garage 56 is at LeMans is very cool.
And the sound. Good God it sounds fantastic.
Of course they put a giant ass spoiler on it. 😅

as an american f1 fan (much more than nascar) im super excited to see what they can do
It’s an over all love for racing he has. I guarantee if he got in shape to this day he would go toe to toe if not quicker with pretty much the entire F1 grid. I believe.
A lot of politics and publicity involved, but to be really competitive they should have put some of the young NASCAR drivers in the seat. These guys are used to muscling heavy cars around for 4-5 hours straight. There would be no falloff due to driver fatigue and they could run 2 guys for 2 4 hour shifts each and let the fastest guy run 1 early 4 hour and rest up for the final 4 hour sprint to the end.
2 things: can all the nascar cup cars run a front clip like this one next year, it's beautiful! Love the little winglets. Also, if they put bicycle-style fenders on them could they run the IR-18 or its successor as a garage 56 car in the coming years? They have windshields now. Would love to see an indycar rip down the mulsanne straight.
It would need a lot of modifications to make it safe and able to run for 24 hours
I hope Garage 56 will give some hard fight against Ferrari and Porsche GTE. 👍👍👍

Nascar crew members including Bobby Jo Macdonald and Sandy Sandine (among others) crewed at Lemans in the 1967 Dana Corvette attempt. Driven by Bob Bondurant and Dick Gulstrand. Crowd favorite then, just as now.

People seem surprised a street course nascar is quick. Its a full tube chassis v8 race car. Its old school design in a way but tuned to a very high level with tons of torque
