When I was buying these years ago, mostly bought AU grades for affordability; have a couple of Liberty $5s in MS61-62; gold was never cheap, from a collecting viewpoint.
Thanks for a interesting video, I obtained a raw $5 Indian years ago when my uncle died. Was not a stacker/collector then, now that I am I have a appreciation for pre 33 gold and coins in general, I consider myself fortunate to have it. Amazing how just a few years ago there was very little interest in pre-33 gold, now just the opposite. Old is new again.
A value in the marketplace if you can keep them separate from the 18k/16k/14k ones that Israeli jewelers re-manufactured to go to Israel...............I put all of my money from the stimulus checks into $5 Indians....I was 2 for 5.................. :(
Love this series. It's one of the few that my non-numismatist friends show any interest in due to the countersunk design.
The 1911 really is a striking coin. The $5 and the $10 gold Indian coins are where some of my biggest regrets are. I regret that I didn't buy more of them when they were a bit more affordable. Thanks for sharing those!
I'm from the UK, and I love the Indian head five and ten dollar. I have the 1910 S and I baffled as to why this piece is slightly higher price then some of other dates that are lower mintages. Also of more importance, I discovered a five dollar 1909s and a 1914 two and a half with, and extra cord under the chin. The five is only VF condition and the 1914 two and half nice EF English grading. Both pieces are fully genuine, and Someone did interfere will Belle Lyne Pratt original die. And it looks as wrong dies were picked up by mistake. No one is interested here in the UK, do you know anything about any of this. Nothing in the American red book. Can you help about any of this.
$5 Indians are one of my favorites. I buy them based on luster and lack of field marks. Unfortunately, price also plays a role. Great video Ben, thank you.

I was ready to bet a thousand dollars for a MS grade but I was wrong!
I would love to add a $5 Indian to my collection, but the premium over spot is so high, I have a hard time justifying the purchase.
It’s best to not view any cost over melt value as a “premium” when it comes to coins, especially investment grade coins. Treasures such as these are a lot more than bullion. The “premium”, as you call it, is the history, the rarity, the desirability and the diminishing availability. This ($5 gold Indian) is my favorite US coin series and all that own have appreciated significantly, relative to gold spot price, in the 5 or so years I’ve been assembling my collection. None have depreciated relative to fluctuations in the spot price of bullion.
Its not like you don't get that premium back when you send it off to its next life after you.

Extremely well done. I am impressed (not that easy to do) with your presentation of this series . . . . . the Indians are super fun and "do-able" for the most part. The average person isn't even going to be able to tell an AU55 from an MS62 . . . . .. .
Great video, I love that old gold. Those Indians are very difficult to grade but you are spot on Ben. The 09 and the 11 are clearly better than the rest and would probably be regraded as unc.

Yeah I've been wanting one for a while now. Earlier this week heritage had a live auction that had several of these all in old green holders ranging from grades AU-58 - MS-63. I took the time and studied each and every single one carefully before the auction regardless of the grade. I found a 1910 MS-61 that I believed to be one of the most undergraded $5 indians in the lot. I told myself "I dont mind paying just a little more to get this one if I can." My objective was to get a nice one in a lower grade holder without spending too much. I got it, can't wait to get it!

I have been staring at coins a long while, I still usually cannot tell an AU-58 from a MS-63 in 2.50 and 5.00 Indians.
Love pre 33 good especially the $2.5/$5 Indians.
