Her pushing him out into the lake to give him a proper burial is her forgiving him for what he did.

@Aleksa Vuletic Honestly the fact the majority of these type of movies end badly irks me. Not every horror movie needs to have a sequel or a depressing ending just for the sake of it. Not to mention it feels like I wasted time if the main evil just shrugs away everything the cast does.
It did though. The evil persisted. The monsters who killed her child lived on. You think murderers who kill for no reason will become the best of people once they are forgiven? It's bullshit. Bad people are always bad. Rotten to their core. The murderers did not learn their lesson and this forgiveness only allows them to go and hurt more people.

I thought the body she sent into the lake at the end was Solomon’s, not her sons. Like his physical body that she wrapped up to give a proper send off. Because if she’s able to ask for forgiveness from her angel, it shows that she’s already let her son go and accepted the grieving process.
I thought it was her son. She asked for forgiveness, and when she lied to the guy in the beginning he got a small cut and THEN lying about her son got him stabbed. And the forgiveness was for actually killing her son. But I wonder if it was him.
I love this movie! So, fun fact I don't recall you bringing up... Her name, Sofia/Sophia, is just as meaningful as Solomons. It's a reference to the idea of the divine feminine in Gnosticism. Also a reference to a very important Gnostic book called the Pistis Sophia.
@The Stock Trader Possibly; but to my understanding there isn't a gnostic connection to the Hagia Sophia. That's just the Greek for "holy wisdom". But naming her Sophia in the movie was definitely a conscious decision
@@thomas8552 There definitely isn’t a gnostic connection to the Hagia Sophia since that title is an orthodox theological title of Jesus along with Logos. In closer inspection however, the Hagia Sophia refers to the earth-dwelling energies of God, personified in the incarnate Jesus, by which we can experience the divine and achieve theosis. In this sense, Jesus is the Holy Wisdom of God which illuminates and redeems the human soul through the Holy Spirit, giving it a place in the divine Kingdom of Heaven. Though a strictly orthodox view, many similarities can be noted with the Pistis Sophia according to which Sophia is the syzygia of Christ and the essence of human souls which are redeemed by the Savior through Gnosis and returned to the Treasury of Light. I think the similarities between these two are the result of a common background in Greek philosophy. Also, I would be hesitant to describe gnostic Sophia as the “divine feminine” since that’s a new-age, dualistic and abstract term which fails to capture the immanent and lesser nature of Sophia. Nevertheless, I think the names of the two mains reflects Solomon’s god-given wisdom as well as the book “Wisdom of Solomon” which contains much talk of holy wisdom, eschatology, good and evil, all key themes in the esoteric background of the movie
There's so many horror movies I would never have known about or found out about if it wasn't for found flix! He's definitely put me on to some good ones and help me avoid some bad ones 😂😂
The bundle Sophia pushes in the river at the end, is Solomon's body. He died in the house, and, in a weird way she helped him posthumously accomplish his wish, which was to disappear. Also if she just left a dead body in the house, she might be charged with murder. At least that's my take on it. Frightening movie, especially considering the rituals it depicts are real.
@@maasoomahabdul8872 Oh yeah. Aleister Crowley famously tried the ritual at least twice. He didn't finish it the first time but (according to him) finished it the second time.

Actually no. The end of the movie she completes the ritual and meets a benevolent being. This movie is kinda pro occultism since it shows it working at the end.
This could honestly be a kinda sick series. Different people with different backstories asking for different things. Some succeed some fail. Various rituals and various gurus to help them and their different ways of guiding them through. Some are real, some are frauds, and like Solomon, some are flawed. And I love the way they mimic later in the movie with the never ending loop leading back to the house. Such an artfully crafted atmospheric flick, one of a kind really.
I saw this a when it first came out. It is pretty intense. Especially when the Angel finally appears. The idea you have to walk through Hell to get to salvation
"there is power in knowing that there are things outside of our reality" means specifically that in you as an individual knowing that reality isn't as "concrete" as everything around you believes.....it gives you the ability to work in realms other people have no idea exist, and thus limits their capability by default. some people are so deathly afraid of that world it won't matter if they do know they wouldn't approach it even if it meant life or death.
The wikipedia page says that at the end she's giving Solomon a water funeral. In a way he gets his wish of being invisible Edit: I should add this movie is one of my favorites. The end gets me every time
People act like the weird looking angels are the only ones that exist, and that's not true, every time God sends an angel messenger, it looks like a human.
@@conq1273 tbh though angels don’t look like any of those things anyway since they are spirits. how we see them is limited to our human perception, we wouldn’t be able to comprehend what they actually look like. 🤷♀. But it would cool and add to the horror aspect of the movie if they went for that weird design.
I am SO happy you did this movie. There were some scenes that were difficult to sit through to say the least, not because of lack of quality, but the exact opposite. And the ending never fails to bring a tear to your eye, after ALL that, thinking it was all for naut, BAM there He is. It's beautiful. Another banger video, as usual. Never stop, we love you man💜
I have truly never seen another movie ending like this one. The idea of the main protagonist actually seeing a higher being is so cool to me, and the design was incredible. I wish more movies, especially suspense/thriller/horror dabbled in that kind of imagery, instead of copping out and pulling the "unimaginable cosmic horror" trope.
I remember I was shocked after finding out that the Abramelin ritual is an actual ritual people do to try and get in direct contact with their guardian angel (not many though - when Aleister Crowley did it, it reportedly hadn't been performed in centuries). Sounds like hell. Even if you don't believe in the supernatural the ritual itself is rough. I see some confusion in the comments about the demon summoning. Summoning demons is done on purpose because it's a dark magic ritual that requires you to overcome the 12 biggest baddies in hell (including Lucifer). Supposedly, if you can't bind them then you become possessed or die. Personally, I don't believe in magic, but I still don't know why anyone would really want to risk it lol
I just want to be another comment amongst the many. But can we agree that we are all. Happy for foundflix getting larger sponsors. Man, I had my doubts but after I finished watching this movie, I have to say this has to be one of the best movies I have ever seen. And one of the most unforgettable performance ever by Steve Oram and Catherine Walker. Absolutely amazing.
In essence this is what ritual is about. It evokes our “demons” and forces them to conform to our Will. In occultism your PTSD would be given a name, evoked into the triangle. Made to swear allegiance to you on your sword, Then invoked into your body under your complete control. As a result your PTSD subsides and your regain control of your life. PTSD is a vague concept - give it a form and a voice (demon) within ritual and you can define, appreciate and control it. Cured.

Yay! I've been waiting (and rooting) for this to be presented and explained by you for a long time! One of my favorite horrors with a slow buildup. The last moments are insane!
Glad there's a decent movie where the ritual actually does what it's supposed to instead of just "HURR DURR DEMONS YOU DIE NOW" like 90% of horror/supernatural movies seem to do.
One thing I'm confused by, but maybe there's something in the movie itself that clarifies this. When Solomon pins her to the table and insists she tells the truth, she admits that she didn't want her son back, she wanted vengeance on the teen hooligans who murdered Jack doing their own satanic ritual. But then after he's stabbed, and she talks about her son some more, she says that he was taken from daycare one day, but they never found the body or tied it to anyone being responsible. The case was closed after three years, and Jake was tragically forgotten. So how did she know about the teen hooligans? Or, if that was another lie, why would she still be lying at that point, and who was she actually trying to get vengeance against? I feel like I'm missing something, so if there's something in the movie that clarifies this, I'd appreciate the assist.
@@alfin5818 hm, interesting, he asks her if she thinks it was him and she says no, and he says something along the lines of “always those stupid teens/they’re cursed now”, I didn’t think it was him, but it’s possible.
The fact that the ritual eventually kills solomon made me assume maybe he was lying and was the murderer. He does have a cut when she asks if he went through her bag and it seems he did have the picture of her son and i mean he got the nastiest of cuts right when she was saying how she actually wanted revenge
I find it interesting how during the final moments the injury to her hand sort of forces her hand into a prayer like position as she runs from the demons and encounters the angel
Okay, now that movie still resonates with me even after I watched it two years ago, once. That angel scene still freaks me out today. And I could never forget that scene for the rest of my life and it scared me at night, for two weeks after I watched this movie.

@@revaipremium1332 the repulsion you feel toward the angel, in the form of 'creepy', are the parts of you that still need purification. I was listening to this while driving, so I didn't see the visuals and just heard the story. The first thing I noticed was their names. Solomon is a derivative of the Hebrew word "Shalom", meaning peace or Peaceful One. Joseph is derived from the Hebrew word Yosef, meaning "God will add" or "God will increase". So, "God will increase peace". And that's exactly the gift Solomon ended up giving her (I'll have to watch the movie to see if he got his). Sophia is a Greek word meaning Wisdom. It's actually more than a name - it's kind of an entity, embodying wisdom and skill. Add to that that King Solomon was basically the supreme king of wisdom in the Old Testament, and you've got a lot riding on the concept of wisdom. I went ahead and looked up the name Howard, since they clearly thought out these names. It's derived from an old Normandy/Germanic word, Hugihard, meaning "Heart-brave". They kinda spelled out the whole movie, just in their names. Now I want to watch this movie just for all the spiritual concepts they covered.

I can't remember what but wasn't there some kinda inconsistency with the son. I think he says that Jim Carrey & the mom had met like 11 years ago, but it's never implied that he's a stepdad to the son, who's clearly 14-16. Something like that. Classic of a movie tho, as silly as it got
@@staniyabuns.productions7132 mainly due to it being a type of movie Jim Carrey isn't known for and people had odd expectations cause of him being in it you know?
Does anyone else recognize all of the Aleister Crowley references? He had to find the "perfect house" to do his ritual in and once it began he couldn't stop, or leave the house. He lasted a few weeks, but failed to complete the ritual. He probably got bored or lost motivation, but a lot of what he did is what the characters in this movie are doing.
Instead of drinking human blood, I'm pretty sure it was cat blood and some of his "followers" ended up getting really sick from it... which made me kinda happy, not gonna lie.
This is only tangentially related but this movie put my thoughts in this direction. Even as an atheist myself I have an immense respect for the kind of people who can perform these sorts of religious or spiritual rituals and meditations based only on faith, like those months you see that basically mummified themselves alive. I almost envy the security and calm that that sort of certainty and will must provide for you, even if I've never seen whatever people like that saw that let's them look into the dark and see something larger in it.
From what I can tell, this is suprisingly accurate for the ritual aspects. I was surprised for a Movie how well they researched this. Granted movies always embellish.
I find it more of a drama with a supernatural bent rather than an outright horror movie. There's something quite poignant and meditative especially the last final scenes.

I think that a creepy perverted person in fiction is perceived as worse than an evil person because creeps are much more common to encounter in real life.
This movie is FANTASTIC! I think about it a lot because it has one of the scariest scenes in a horror movie I’ve personally ever seen: when the little boy spirit at the door confessed that it’s not really her son and he’s just trying to scare her. I have goosebumps just thinking about it.
Thanks for finally covering this! I loved this movie! I wasn't expecting much, but was blown away. Definitely a slow burn type of film. I didn't think it would end the way it did, but it was definitely unique and memorable.
Not sure if anybody noticed, but they casted a Male lead actor who looks exactly like the real life Practitioner, Skinner.... They also paid homage to the real story. That happened at boleskine house.... Where it sounded like a small dog snuffling under the door, Which then turned into a beast.... Many small nods, many Easter eggs.
Solomon didn't kill her son. Her son died as she said. Solomon was carrying guilt for his sister. That tussle in the kitchen was sad in ending his lifr from sepsis. She offered to stop and get him help. The finger being cut off was the price she paid for the favor. She was growing and asked for the ability to forgive. She drank blood because she told Solomons she could not do forgiveness. She grew enough to want the ability to forgive. She put Solomon to rest in the lake.
I saw this film when it first was released and has stuck with me for years. They really did their homework on the hocus pocus aspect. I like to think the angel at the end was St. Michael. He has always been portrayed holding a gigantic sword and dressed as a warrior. Watched a terrific movie today full of nasty twists and turns , and would love to hear your review and comments - "The House on the Bayou" playing on Prime. I wonder if that giant angel in the room is Archangel Michael. He's known for carrying around a big sword. Although it looks female angels can take the shape any gender individual

Isn’t it probably Solomon’s body, that she pushes into the lake/swamp? Of course the overarching symbolism is that she’s made peace with her son’s death, but.. Solomon’s (real) body had to go somewhere!
I’m so glad you did a video on this movie. I use to think about it a lot and how I tried piecing it together when it first came out. Granted when I first watched it I missed the first 10 mins. So I had play detective. Great explanation and break down as always!!!!
i'm a little confused on one aspect- why did she always see her son holding the hand of an old lady? Is it supposed to imply something about how he died or maybe where he is in the after life?
This was a much better movie than I thought it would be initially. It's an example of a slow burn done right. As opposed to movies like 'Lamb' or 'It comes at night,' this one feels like the ending is earned. And it has a satisfying payoff. It's similar to something like 'Mother' in that regard. A Dark Song really left me thinking of how I'd respond to losing one of my own children.
If I'm not mistaken Alister Crowley did this ritual at his house in Loch Ness and didn't finish it.I know after that Jimmy Page bought that house because he was into that stuff.I'm not sure if Page still owns the house or not.
Joseph Solomon killed her son. It was strongly hinted at, her son was killed in a ritual and Joseph even asks her if she thinks he did it. His last words to her was "I am..." I think he was about to confess. He dies a horrible death like she wished for and Joseph even says the ritual is working when he gets stabbed. Lastly when she gets her wish she does a burial ritual with him.. Am I the only one that thinks this?? She asks to be
"I Am" is also what is said at the beginning of many rituals - it also could refer to what God in the story of the burning bush said to Moses initially
I am not here to yuck anyone else's yum, and I am so glad you covered this movie (I am writing this before watching!) I truly hated this film. I appreciate a slow burn, but this felt like the fire wasn't even lit for the overwhelming majority. Hoping to glean more insight from this recap! Excited to jump in!
Wow I definitely had a totally different experience. But also I do practice rituals similar to the one in this movie. Though I’ve never done this one, it is a bit insane and intense. It’s interesting to hear a total outsiders perspective though.
So like did she just leave a house all messed up and bloody with Solomon's body rotting and her finger in it? Like what happens when someone finds that? Was it Solomon's body she put in the water maybe? Idk
Movie is good for the realness of the ritual. U don’t get that a lot from these movies so props to that. Felt real but scariest part of the movie was the bird lmao
It is very tricky how people would react to something that's so severe like losing one's child. I just cannot imagine what would I feel or how my mental health would be. You would be amazed how many people in real state have never heard of it.
Ok nm ur right. The body is huge. It was him.
The body had to be Solomon's, she wouldn't have just left it behind. Remember he also wanted to be "invisible".
Yes, I also thought that was Solomon's body, sent off to his wish, to be invisible, and vanishing from the eye of the world.
100% correct. It was Solomon.
It wasn't
I was just reading about Sophia when studying the nag hammadi library.

I think if they went for a biblical angel design that would be so trippy and awesome. Like the one with the eyeballs and 4 heads
People act like the weird looking angels are the only ones that exist, and that's not true, every time God sends an angel messenger, it looks like a human.
there are biblical angels that are human but probably Adam-sized, like this one. so pretty accurate as well

I don't believe either in god nor in magic but if somebody would pay me a 10.000$ to do this ritual I would probably say no.

I absolutely loved this movie. Stumbled upon it in the middle of the night. I couldn’t remember the name. Love this channel.
This movie really resonates with me because it reminds a lot of how I overcame my PTSD and trauma as a victim of a violent mugging a few years ago.
Cured.
🤣🤣🤣
When will people learn that trying to contact your dead loved ones never ends well and it's usually never your dead loved ones that respond

Either way, you're never going to see me doing no rituals like this.🤷🏾♂️

We end up being selfish, that we are blinded to not accept what is already done or what is real.

Glad there's a decent movie where the ritual actually does what it's supposed to instead of just "HURR DURR DEMONS YOU DIE NOW" like 90% of horror/supernatural movies seem to do.
This movie is so slept on. Absolutely love it. 🥰
I feel like I'm missing something, so if there's something in the movie that clarifies this, I'd appreciate the assist.
i saw a comment saying that it might be solomon who killed sophia's child in a previous ritual and thats why he died
Also i kept wondering why she wouldnt tell him the real reason until they were already deep in the ritual
I find it interesting how during the final moments the injury to her hand sort of forces her hand into a prayer like position as she runs from the demons and encounters the angel
Okay, now that movie still resonates with me even after I watched it two years ago, once. That angel scene still freaks me out today. And I could never forget that scene for the rest of my life and it scared me at night, for two weeks after I watched this movie.
that’s why angels usually say to not fear them, because they are more scary than actual demons

I loved this movie even though its slower than most.
@@revaipremium1332 the repulsion you feel toward the angel, in the form of 'creepy', are the parts of you that still need purification. The unpurified parts of your being cannot exist that closely to the presence of such a concentrated divine energy.
After watching this, for the first time, part night, I can see that I've spent the past seven+ years purifying aspects of myself. The appearance of the archangel was a climactic inspiration for me. I could feel that she was going to ask for the ability to forgive, rather than vengeance. I'd been working through a similar pattern myself.
@@acrj-alfasaus4825 Angels show us their true form which scares us as we aren't ready for it. Demons disguise as conventionally beautiful to deceive and harm us.
Also that was Solomons body which she put in the water. P. S the angel smiled when she asked for forgiveness.

This depiction of an occult ritual in this film is the closest to a real ritual ever committed to film. Short of filming an actual ritual that is.
Apparently the group he was with was having a schism which drew him away
Typical Crowley, he never really was able to stick with one thing.

For me that was a little bit nice moment because the demon was kinda honest with her and it just makes closer, things get clearer and so less scary.

Yesss same with me. About to do this now.
Michael. "I'm just some cunt using your son's voice to make you afraid"
You need to do a ending explained for Everything Everywhere All At Once, it’s such a good movie and can get confusing at times
That was a really great breakdown. Thank you!
i'm a little confused on one aspect- why did she always see her son holding the hand of an old lady? Is it supposed to imply something about how he died or maybe where he is in the after life?
Same here.... Who was that old woman and what was her purpose??
Beautiful story, the angel at the end was a unexpected positive twist.
Joseph Solomon killed her son.
It was strongly hinted at, her son was killed in a ritual and Joseph even asks her if she thinks he did it.
His last words to her was "I am..."
I think he was about to confess.
He dies a horrible death like she wished for and Joseph even says the ritual is working when he gets stabbed.
Lastly when she gets her wish she does a burial ritual with him..
Am I the only one that thinks this??
She asks to be
It's a nice theory. But it has no real support.
"I Am" is also what is said at the beginning of many rituals - it also could refer to what God in the story of the burning bush said to Moses initially
The fact that he called on Horus, Christ, Baal and Orpheus who've all entered the underworld and come back..
I am not here to yuck anyone else's yum, and I am so glad you covered this movie (I am writing this before watching!)

They probably named her Sophia, after the Archon of wisdom, that created the demiurge, which created the world as we know it (it’s from Gnosticism)
Why don't these people ever just get therapy? Seems a lot easier than trying to summon the dead
Literally my thought lol
🤣
It is very tricky how people would react to something that's so severe like losing one's child. I just cannot imagine what would I feel or how my mental health would be. It is good if people are around you who would suggest stuff like therapy but if one is alone(like isolated from the society, living only with the child) then things become tricky.
