  • In this episode, I am on my way to Abuja, which I should reach in one day now. But I still have to get across the wide river Niger, and according to the locals, there is a ferry... When I finally reach the paved road, and think that the biggest challenge is behind me, I realize it only just begun... stay tuned for the episode after this!

You are right,. she's more than brave. Those routes she followed are simply teeming with bandits and robbers. She could easily be taken hostage and a huge ransom demanded before she is released. As a woman, one of the bandit leaders could even decide to turn her into a bride. He would take her deep into the forest where she can't be traced. By the time she gets her freedom, she could be the mother of several brats. As she traverses to the Cameroon border, it's not bandits she could encounter but islamic terrorist groups like boko haram. When they take her hostage, it is curtains and babies. Personally, I'll suggest she cut short her Nigerian and African adventures. It's nice viewing for us but simply too risky for a white woman.

I am so amazed that a whole editing suite fits in a little laptop and you are crashing through all this mud, rock, and holes and some crashes, and at the end of the day you put this story together and the music matches the mood. You have opened my eyes of 80 years and my viewpoint has softened on so many fronts as to what the world really looks like, we are so lucky to have you telling your stories and making the whole world fall in love with you. Thank so you very much for your very hard work. I know a little about how much time takes. This is the second video of Itchy Boots I've watched and it it superb. From the camera work to her interactions, the edits, all 5*. I'd have loved to see some drone shots of the river she was crossing, but I also can understand that Noraly may likely not want to hang around. Simply being an outsider in many places makes you a point of interest - to the 99% who are good, and the 1% who are less so.
To anyone criticising the boatman, please don't. He's a business man and this is just how things function. My view was that the ferry was waiting until it had made enough £ before leaving - she could break out the money to allow it to leave. Yes, she will have paid for that, but, sometimes you pay for convenience and for the reduced risk of an overloaded boat.
My own experience is from working in the electricity and gas industries across sub-Saharan and North Africa - this stuff is par for the course, but Noraly is clearly superb at asserting herself in a friendly but clear way. There are a lot of guys I've worked with who thought that money or over-confidence bordering on aggression were how to get past an over-charged meal, a police "check point" or past a bureaucrat. And sometimes it is just not putting yourself in those situations. Some have had very bad outcomes indeed and barely got out without a beating. Noraly handles herself far better than most people I've seen - someone to learn from!!
I'm thrilled to have found this channel - I have A LOT of catching up to do! :)
Looking forward to seeing the Cameroon visa process - I must admit, I normally paid a fixer to do this stuff for me, but it was on the client/company bill!
