First introduced in 2018, Old Charter Oak utilizes barrels sourced from oak grown in many different countries, climates, and soils, including some centuries old oaks. Old Charter is a brand that dates back to 1874, named in honor of the Charter Oak tree, “a famous symbol of American independence and free spirit. French oak is often used to age wine, and Old Charter Oak takes advantage of the rich soil in which the oak is cultivated and grown to impart what they consider a “silky” texture to their bourbon. The French Oak Bourbon is the third release of the French Oak series, aged 12-years and a limited release, bottled at 93 proof and retails for $70.

Wandered into Costco to buy cheese, walked out with this bottle for $56 after tax. Had no idea about the crazy secondary, but I'm excited to crack into it and share.
What magical land did this occur? Not hating just amazed… 😁
I have a soft spot for French Oak. Maker’s 46, Blue Note crossroads, and even the Glenlivet 15 yr French Oak Reserve Scotch. All good stuff
Had a taste of this . That finish goes on forever. Really enjoyed it.
Impossible to find up here in the Northeast but have been wanting to try it, and the Charter Oak tree was just down the street from my office in Hartford! Seedlings from it are planted around the Capitol and court in Hartford. Beautiful trees.
You would think they would have used some CT grown oak ...just because!
Grabbed one this year, 2024. Never heard of it. Figured since it was BT, a BT lover would pay whatever this WT lover offered it at. No one talks about this. I still have it, months later and no one talks about it on any Va bourbon group.
I read the barrels for this were procured in 2013. its an 8 yr old bourbon. I believe the 1st release of French Oak was a 12 yr old.
Wooo. I just tried this for the 1st time on Saturday. It was a GREAT lower proof BT pour. Nothing to complain about. Yummy
Yep. Very good stuff. Not worth the high markups
😎🐾I’m with you on that I prefer a long finish as well.
Great review brotha! I had a pour of this at a bar and while it was good couldn’t see what all the hype was about. That being said I’d really love to sit down with no distractions and explore it again. Cheers man!
Going to see how it opens up as well
So glad u did this one. It is really a unicorn. Thanks so much. I am French oak fan. I would love to see comparison with this and your fav French oak bottle and how it stands up against another bottle
I was given a btl of the Chinkaap Oak a couple of yrs ago. The person who gave it to me and myself didn't really knew what I had. I thought it was good not great, like your review. Because I didn't know how rare it was, I drank it like a daily sipper. I do regret that.
Never seen one and im pretty ok with that. Im honestly just kinda tired of buffalo trace.
💯 BT has become an exchange currency for me. I use it to trade for much interesting, complex, better tasting bottles. 🤷🏻♂️
welp you heard it everyone, just drive on over to try it. Heading over from Dayton see you soon :)
Would try it for MSRP if I happen upon it (I shop a store that puts everything out that they get at MSRP).
Great Video and review.
I don't completely hate on secondary being a fan of capitalism and all, but I do have issues with it. My trust issues keep me away from buying secondary (I suspect there's a good deal of counterfeit going on) and everything I buy, I buy to enjoy with my buddies. I minored in econ in college and feel like the bourbon secondary would be a great topic for a thesis.
Our Buehlers in Wooster ohio got this in today. Pissed I just seen it online . Probably already gone.
$250? Glad you got it like that, Jason.
I Just grabbed a OESQ barrel proof instead of this, both at retail. Do you think I made the right choice? I remembered your review of this but didn’t fully remember your result so had to revisit it. The 90 proof point and I didn’t see an age statement so I forgot it was a 12 year.
Btw good sponsor. Usually you either get a chemical bath or hippies selling you nonsense with skincare.
I paid $69.99 for mine. I was so disappointed by the Canadian Oak that I sold this one to my whiskey buddy for cost.
Okay I'll be over in 5.. 🤣
My buddy saw this for $539 in NY 🤦🏻♂️
Would you pull the gun for 299.99 plus tax?
Just heard the video never mind 😂
…makers 46
Skin care commercial??
Yes, some people actually take care of their skin.
None of these bottles are ever worth more then msrp. There is a reason actual manufacturing suggests a price
I feel like Buffalo Trace really low balls the SRP. In todays market I feel like a 12 year old bourbon from Buffalo Trace aged in a French Oak cask would command a higher SRP.
@@TheMashandDrum fair point
@@TheMashandDrum Totally lowballed price for a 12 yo. In today's market, with the Kentucky Owls, Barrels and Four Gates, this could easily 'belong" next to them at $100-$200. I mean 6-7 year old Four Gate is $200 in my area
Nothing from BT is worth the markup.
Just got one today. Paid $399.... I'll give it a try on a special occasion.
Picked up 2 for 70 each
Just found it on the shelf at my store for $79. Even better I had a $15 off coupon so bought it for $64.
I wonder why distilleries feel the need to put up these big labels. I’ll buy whiskey so long as it is priced for what’s in the bottle rather than the big far fetched story on the back. Hell the only thing that would make me buy a whiskey for a high price is the proof. What I do care about is the proof, lot, barrel, date of barreling and bottling, barrel treatment, and all of that good stuff. That’s the story I care about. The only truth this bottle has is that white oak trees are different by species, and the ranges in which they grow. The bottle is very nice however. I would buy it for thirty-five dollars at most, and least would be twenty-seven dollars. Especially it being a ninety proofer. I’m going to give my newly acquired Blade and Bow bourbon a try now.
Got one off the shelf today for $80, I feel pretty dang lucky!
Same here, Total Wine in TX had 1case along with Stagg!!!
They were putting this out when I was leaving TW and didn't know what it was. Missed a good opportunity
If this is the second release of French oak, BT removed the age statement from the back of the bottle. Probably not 12 years old anymore
I was going to say the same . I’m sure its younger. The age stated goes for more on secondary and prob more delish
Good video of a Ghost. As far as BT sweetness I can relate. We just last week cracked open a Kosher Wheat and it was sweet up front, sweet in the middle, and sweet at the end. It was real tasty, but not complex by any means. Maybe I'll be lucky in my travels and find a Old Chart Oak at a fair price (150's). It'd be nice to share with others. Cheers.
Outstanding review. I have this bottle, but haven't popped it yet. After this review I'll open it tonight. Sidenote, I sent you a message on Patreon regarding Seelbachs.
Balcones Fr. OAK IS THE BEST
Found one in Texas today, paid $70 for it.
