The effects look fantastic, same quality as Star Trek 6. It's a shame everyone switched over to CGI when practical models in the 90s looked extremely realistic
The Orville (because of course its about The Orville) has a practical model of the ship that they use for some shots exactly because it just looks great.
It all looks good because these are large and detailed models(also prohibitively expensive), built and filmed by experienced crews. Motion control photography has - when done wrong - the same potential as CGI to go horribly wrong(or at least not to produce the desired outcome).
there's absolutely nothing wrong with CGI it's just that it becomes overused and obnoxious. physical models can look great and save some money but they are very limited in how you can move them. perhaps those limitations would improve the laziness of the writers though.
Really stands out just how inclusive that ending is, with the fans (who are stand ins for Star Trek fans but by implication its the audience of Galaxy Quest itself) given a strong role in helping the ship land. The film even does an arc where the actors get cynically tired of fan's endless talk of what really is on Deck 8 or what-ever, only for at the end to go "nah, you guys are great." It shows how shows are ultimately always in symbiosis with the fans, even the nerdy wiki writers who want to know what is on Deck 8.
This and Wrath of Khan tie for my favorite Star Trek movies of all time 😂 I'm kind of glad we never got a sequel. This was lightning in a bottle. As much as I wanted to see one, any attempt would have most likely ended as sub par.
This is terrible...the camera's not shaking and jerking around like the director's having a seizure while riding a horse, and NONE of those ships looks like any PART of them are made of shredded aluminum, studded with LEDs, and covered with a layer of frost. Unbelievable.
That shot where they bump up against the spacedock always looks odd. Particularly when you notice the angle it's at and the space that the engine occupies. Think I remember them talking about that oj the commentary
It's required for the gag to work. Of course these models do not share the same space, they are done as separate elements during motion control photography. Drama and comedy is more important here.
I think only Star Trek actors could relate to Galaxy Quest. Not saying it wasn't a cool movie.. just saying the average person couldn't relate to the characters or what was going on unless you were an actor in Star Trek. Or Some other Sci-fi franchise.
Still the most favorite sci-fi comedy move of all time!
It's tied with spaceballs for me.
Hell, even Buzz Lightyear in Star Command is more Star Trek than Nu Trek
Not gonna lie, the Defender is actually a very pretty ship.
Better looking than the Doritos
@@SonofTiamat I gotta cut the Lower Decks ship some slack, it's not *supposed* to look good.
Wait its not called the Protector?
The Orville could even be related to her.

Check out "piercefilm productions" and check out the video on Galaxy Quest model making. Fantastic.
Agree I like practical models over CGI, Star Wars was smart to move back to it

What's in deck 8?
Great movie
Just like mother used to make.
the Kep-mok bloodticks scene is the funniest scene in this movie
@@MajorGrin I still miss the toilet joke scene, that was a funny deleted scene!
@@tamaspapp225 yeah it's a shame they deleted that

"Insert Galaxy Quest is more Star Trek than Discovery joke here" lol
Well...you aren’t wrong...
Also, check the youtube channel "piercefilm productions" and their video on Galaxy Quest model making. Fantastic.
Galaxy Quest is more Star Trek than Discovery joke
@@Shadow25720 I should have just put "insert Discovery joke here"
But... it's not a joke. It's a fact.
Kinda makes me wish Tim Allen had guest starred in Star Trek. Or Allen Rickman, or Sigourney Weaver, or Tony Shallub
I would love to have seen Sam Rockwell dancing on Star Trek
Well Galaxy Quest is a Satire
And it's fun as hell.
This and Wrath of Khan tie for my favorite Star Trek movies of all time 😂

Whoever was behind this movie had their game down cold. They knew.
This is what Orville should have been.
Orville is the closest thing to it so it's also good. but yeah I wish it was a bit more like galaxy quest
I think Galaxy Quest is a little more meta with the whole satire of cast tension on TOS.
to this day when ever i remember this ship, i will always remember what NTE stands for, and still love that it was a thing XD
Well, the owners of the cars in parking won't be pleased of what happened
So, how long till you use footage from Galaxy Quest to mock Discovery? ;)
It's just so fantastically awesome!
The ship reminds me of a boeing 737 for the shaoe of the front and i just love that. It makes it look so nice
Thank you, Major! Such a fun movie. Waaay better than Nu-Trek. 😊
1:30 You broke the ship. YOU BROKE THE BLOODY SHIP!
Ok, I need to watch that movie again.
How did this look so good for 1999

Better then that discovery shit

What Discovery should've been!
It's a giant uterus.
They did a Spaceballs! by under-promising a comedy and over-delivering a really good Star Trek movie.
🖖😎👍
Almost looks like something from Orville
Some of the ship designs in that show are a bit goofy looking, to put it bluntly.
9000x better than the orville

You don't need to share the exact life experience with a character to relate to them.
