I mean... that is kind of what happened. She was dating Rob and helped create the show or at least the pilot with them (her words not mine so could be a lie and she's just salty) but her and Rob broke up and she was kind of kicked out after that and re-cast then Rob started dating, married and had kids with Kaitlin. That's gotta hurt but that's showbiz i guess.
@@wiggl3s_821 Yeah after reading her more calm & collected side of the story , I'm sure some of it is true she probably had some creative input, and I am sure she thought the gang was going to stick together but got betrayed by them. However I think she is probably a very unlikable person to know, she constantly tried to make points of how sexist the gang are for naming her Sweet Dee while the rest kept their real names, The Waitress never being given a proper name and is named after the job she didn't want, boys club this etc. I wouldn't be surprised they just tolerated her because she was Rob's girl at the time, since it seems Rob was very open to Kaitlyn s suggestions for Dee
@@TimeBomb014X The show wouldn't of survived if she was involved it seems. I'd of kicked her out also if she was saying stuff like that. Not the right kinda show for a person like that.
As a woman, I’m so grateful Kaitlin Olsen pushed to make dee just as insane as the rest of the gang. We’ve had enough “voice of reason” female characters in tv. It made me like the show so much more.
It’s like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, where they made them detectives for The first two or three episodes because Cartoon Network mandated it, and then dropped it as soon as they knew they could get away with it.
Besides The put upon voice of reason should be a minority it's funnier when a non white has to deal with clueless white especially if those people are the Sunny gang then that person slowly starts reveal they're just as depraved and feckless as the rest
@@jabaritiffith5150 What I like about "Always Sunny" from the two seasons I’ve watched so far, is that every character gets to play the voice of reason at least once. Dee, despite being screwed up in all manner of ways, is still more reasonable compared to the rest of the gang. However, the episode where they introduce Frank starts him off as playing the straight-man archetype. He wants to be there for his children and is planning on donating his wealth to charity, but once Mac and Charlie rope him into coming to a strip club with them, you start to see his morals fade. And in the episode where Dennis and Dee go on welfare, Mac is briefly depicted as the voice of reason when he tells the Reynold siblings that it’s a bad idea and immoral. But later on, Mac exposes himself as a hypocrite when he expresses how okay he is with keeping and underpaying slaves. It’s such a unique and interesting form of subversive writing. Usually I’m not such a fan of the idea that "subversion equates to brilliance" but the way this show subverts the tropes of a sitcom is nothing short of amazing.
@@jabaritiffith5150 Really? I think that whole thing has been done to death. Not to mention, they're brother and sister, twins at that. How would that work?
Kaitlin Olson. She really makes the entire show work. I was so pissed that the cancel culture got her show The Mick taken off the air. Bunch of snowflakes. Some unbelievable great stories on that show. Really a shame the powers that be won...
@@djmattn the mick being cancelled had nothing to do with cancel culture or “snowflakes”... viewership was dropping, and sometimes even good shows get cancelled
In this scene (9:30) Jordan made it believable that Dee was actually helping Artemis and Dennis was only being annoying but Kaitlin Olsen really made Dee look like she actually did it for her own benefit and proving Dennis point and actually making the scene even funnier.
Its the framing. The show is filmed like they had to return the equipment in an hour. Seinfeld on a budget, to which I believe they were trying to get away from the whole, we live in the big city gambit Also you get the sense that they were acting around the female lead, which makes every scene feel stiff. Not even a laugh track would help
Jordan's portrayal of Dee is calmer and reasonably more mature than the rest of the gang and she does capture the initial idea they had for the character. Kaitlin's version of Dee however is more manic and every bit as morally bankrupt as they are which is the better fit for the show.
yeah I think Kaitlin was exactly what I wanted from Dee. The most mature and societally functioning character on the surface but once you see her true character you finally realize why this is the only friend group that will take her. Dennis first seemed the most psychotic, but Dee has easily proven she's his match. If Dennis is Ted Bundy, then Dee is Vera Renczi
Old Dee would get eaten alive by The Gang once Frank starts getting weird with it. Only a true Bird can survive being locked in a cage with a Warthog, a Golden God, a Master of Karate, and a glue-huffing rat-bashing Dirtgrub.
Kaitlin saved the character (and possibly the show). Took Dee from being the generic, boring female character to being one of the best parts of the show and, in my opinion, one of the best female characters in comedy.
Old Dee wasn’t a bad actress by any means, just wrong for the role. I think the difference is that Kaitlyn subtlety shows Dee’s overall lack of confidence.
Agreed, old Dee wasn't that bad at all, her confident voice wouldn't be believeable in the many situations new Dee got herself wrapped up in. They should bring her back for an episode.
Old dee reminds me of Daisy Ridley because they both read their lines in such a boring way. Granted the guys weren’t as good in the pilot either but like it wasn’t nearly as bad as old dee
What's funny is that if you listen to her on a podcast Kaitlin has a really nice and easy to listen to voice. She makes it much more shrill on Sunny since she yells so much.
@@tonyjurkas2791 it's the voice and the general attitude as well. you can't feel bad for anything that happens to her on the show because even when she's not doing anything she's just so annoying, you kind of want to side with the others for some reason.
Old Dee seems like she was reading lines, our Bird that we love seems completely natural and like she is really living through each situation. She is also as crazy as the other guys which makes sense that she would keep hanging out with them, old Dee would have run away from that bar and her supposed brother. Too calm and mature.
Your first sentence is just cap bro, relax. You don't have to bash her just because you prefer the Dee that we have. She doesn't sound like shes reading lines.
@@Easy420skate I agree. Kaitlin's portrayal is a much better fit, but Jordan did a good job in her pilot too. It's not fair to compare their performances because they were in different conditions and different resources. I thought the other actors Glenn, Rob, Charlie were more expressive and livelier in the actual pilot with their increased budgets, so it might just be the conditions.
I agree. Nothing against the first actress, but Kaitlin Olsen fits the role of Dee so much better. Even her voice is more shrill (and I mean that in the nicest way possible) and it really works for Dee whereas the first actress’ voice is more normal and calm. Kaitlin really elevates Dee to being such a memorable character rather than just the gang’s only girl “friend”.
If you're really paying attention Dee has ALWAYS been the brains behind the gang. She's the fastest thinker in EVERY situation. And the driving catalyst behind most of the plots.
To be fair, they changed the character from the original conception once Katlyn Olson became part of the team. Originally it was going to be this straight character to act as a counterpoint to the rest, which thankfully was finally thrown away. But you're right that Katlyn Olson plays the role of a selfish asshole much better.
I did love how in this episode, the mention of the waitress wearing the bracelet is a massive hint that Charlie is making all of this up in the first place.
i love how when kaitlin says “wow artemis that was amazing” she changed the meaning and she basically sounds sarcastic and the original dee sounded serious
@@winstonmarlowe5254 bro are you really trying to intimidate me and make me feel insecure on a youtube video like some locker room bully shit lmao, cringe
I think they're some of the best cast siblings on TV! They've got such a good back and forth where sometimes they're mean to each other and other times they team up together against someone else. Very believable as twins
@@Sweet_Dee As a twin myself, I completely agree with this portrayal of how it works. Except, my twin brother and I were only dually super mean to each other and teamed up to gang up on others when we were children.
I went into the comparison with an open mind... I definitely prefer Kaitlin Olson. She has so much expression and nuance in her line delivery, and I enjoy the small changes to the dialogue which appears to be improv. Regardless of the behind-the-scenes stuff, I'm completely satisfied with the decision to recast the part.
Olson also mentioned in an interview how she wanted Dee to be as uncaring (she said funny, but I think that comes from being uncaring on this show) as the guys and you can reaaally hear that difference. Even when she’s expressing concern it sounds like it could be coming from a place of self interest/fake concern
Tbh I don’t think this cast tape was a good representation of how well the original dee could’ve been because if you notice, it’s not only the original dee that was lacking expression, or weak line delivery etc... they all were a lot better in the 2nd version
@@Xbitxx Original Dee has admitted though in her blog post that she's not a comedian and that they wrote her role this way to hide that fact. I don't think she would've got some of the scenes Kaitlin got. Kaitlin also has a background in improv and sketch comedy so she had so much more she could do comedically. She has the most comedic training of the cast I believe as Glenn, Charlie, and Danny all trained in Drama and Rob didn't go to acting school.
Old Dee is played by Jordan Reid. She wrote a piece online in the observer in 2016, citing she was Rob's ex, who was involved in co creating the show, but got dumped because of FX's all boys club. She took it pretty hard and it took many years to get over being recast.
I just read that article and decided to finally watch the unpaired pilot! Her account is really interesting, especially as none of the guys ever reference her (and especially not as Rob's ex). It's interesting that some things of Jordan's remain in the show to this day, like Sweet Dee's crocheted blanket? That must be in the show now because Jordan had one on her couch and the pilot was shot in her apartment. It is hilarious that Rob dated both versions of Dee 😅
She was the best friend of Mary Elizabeth Ellis (The Waitress) prior to the show and that's how she ended up being involved in it apparently. Which is lucky, she's one of the best characters! Criminal that she isn't in it more.
Even when Kaitlyn was being written as the voice of reason she absolutely killed it, she's always been such an expressive actress in this show. The other girl was good but she just didn't fit the vibe of the show at all
Actually, they were all made executive producers behind her back and she got fired shortly after for breaking up with Rob. There’s a website article written by her about it :) (Ik what you’re saying is a joke haha)
why is nobody commenting on the fact that kaitlen Olsen legitimately saved the show? if they went with the old Dee character, this show would have NEVER gotten as popular as it did. she is a comedic genius with legitimate talent
i like dee but honestly she’s one of the weaker characters on the show & people rarely say she’s their favorite character. so i don’t know if saying she SAVED IT is true. if it lacked dennis or charlie? then we can talk the show being nothing without a character.
i love kaitlins dee, even in earlier seasons when the script made her more reasonable, we can still see how fake and performative her outer act is and the vain centre is inside
You definitely see the importance of casting in this video. Old Dee was fine but Olson really made the character pop. A lot of shows are similarly sharply written but it's like it's missing some secret sauce. That's what it feels like watching the scenes with original Dee.
The last scene was such an improvement from the unaired pilot version. Have you gained a little weight is so random and out of character for Mac, it's so cliché for women being offended too. The "get me a beer" line ties in that Dee was complaining about being overworked in the bar. Fantastic series.
I'm impressed at how much Kaitlin Olson's performance adds to her character. The dialog is so similar in the two versions and yet, one comes off as way too flawless while the other feels much more like an average person and someone with a much better sense of humor!
I think I nailed part of the problem with proto-Dee: she sounds judgemental in a way that deflates the situation, while new Dee just kind of sounds like "I know I make sense but you'll never listen to me so I might as well go along with it". And this isn't just the writing, it's the delivery. Olson has a natural instinct for sounding slightly unhinged, even while saying normal lines. There's more confidence in her, more personality. She sounds engaged in the situation, even when it's frustrating for her character. Proto-Dee is like a parent, trying to get reason into the picture, new Dee just flips out but lets the rest of the gang fail. She's a permanent Jackie Chan "wtf" meme. Better even, after a few episodes they allowed her to fail just as hard, which united them as a true force of ultimate chaos. Proto-Dee would never destroy Cricket, and then how tragic would that be?
Kaitlin Olson is a brilliant comedy actor. Very few people can pull off her level of cringe/ craziness whilst also being watchable and believable. She's great!
Is it possible that Olson playing Dee differently affected the way that Glenn played Dennis. It seems that when Dennis hatches his plan in the original scene he is way more enthusiastic about doing this to help Charlie in his final days. It is still an unhinged plan but his performance makes it feel earnest, like he means well by his friend. And well, that characterisation feels kinda out of kilter with how insane the plan is. However in the Olson scene, Dennis becomes way more cavalier in a way that makes the plan seem like a way to pawn Charlie off on some poor girl which is way more disturbing and funny. He also adds the line "what is the one thing Charlie never gets?" That little dig at Charlie's sex life while he is dying from cancer is the perfect callousness I would expect from Dennis. It makes the whole plan way funnier, because you can tell it comes from a different place in Dennis' head.
@@justinandrew7310 Oh man, I only got through half of that and stopped when it just became about how sexist everyone is. Whatever. Kaitlin had no problems and she made Dee a legendary character. That girl seems completely self-centered

Jordan Reid, who originally played Dee and was a creator of the show, actually wrote a blog post about her experience and perspective working on and being fired from Sunny. It’s very interesting and well written, it’s called “The Most Interesting Thing About Me” on her blog called Ramshackle Glam.
i think the comments section is being too hard on jordan. dee was written as the voice of reason in the original script. she was just playing the part she was asked to. kaitlin took it up a notch and encouraged the guys to write dee's voice as gender neutral so she wasn't as dull. both did a good job but were playing totally different characters.

Before people start comparing acting skills between the two actresses, keep in mind that one is a tape done amongst friends, probably in very few takes for each scene, while the other is after they've gotten the contract to run the show on TV, so they probably put a lot more effort into it, not to mention they were actually getting payed to do it as their job now. You can even see how the other characters are way more expressive (and funnier) in the final one.
Kaitlin version of Dee in this matchup has more deviant than the original version showing that she can match it up with the boys in their crazy plans at this early stage. The delivery of the line of "I've just solved all our problems except for Charlie and the whole cancer thing" is just gold.
This is the story of the original actress who played "Sweet Dee" : At one point, one of the guys (I’m pretty sure it was Glenn, but I could be wrong) called a meeting in Rob’s trailer - no secondary cast members, no execs…just the four of us. The question on the table: “What if the network wants to pick up some of us, but not all of us?” I specifically remember someone - again, I think it was Glenn - saying that I had nothing to worry about, because I was “the pretty girl” (not to mention the only girl) and that Rob was clearly fine because he was the showrunner, but that he was scared that he and Charlie might be replaceable. And so this is what we did, sitting there in Rob’s trailer with paper plates of scrambled eggs from craft services balanced on our laps: we agreed, together, that the network would have to take all four of us…or none of us. We had been in this thing together for over a year now, and we simply wouldn’t allow them to split us up. We shook hands, and headed back to set. Around that time, my relationship with Rob began to unravel - and I started to sense that I was on unsteady footing, despite our “all for one” pact. One day I walked into the office that FX had set up for the show, and was surprised to find three desks: one for Rob, one for Glenn, and one for Charlie. They’d all been made executive producers. Very quickly - almost overnight - I went from being at the center of the project to standing on the periphery. I blamed my age; I blamed my inexperience; I blamed what I saw as my lack of talent…but the fact is - even though at the time I lacked the words or the conviction to say it - that to the people in charge, I was nothing more than another blonde actress. FX at the time was a cigar-smoking, whiskey-drinking old boys’ club, and I was welcome when I was the girlfriend of the creator - but once I wasn’t, my role in creating their new pet project was forgotten. I said nothing, not even to Rob. I was terrified of losing my job, and it seemed to me that the best course of action was to sit down, shut up, and be grateful for what I had. I didn’t want to ask why I hadn’t been made a producer - why, in fact, I hadn’t even been included in the conversation - because the answer was obvious: Rob, Glenn and Charlie (and the agents, managers, and execs that they had started going out for boys’ nights with) were The Guys - the masters of this little universe that they’d created - and me? I was just a girl - and a replaceable one, at that. The pilot wrapped, and shortly afterwards I ended my relationship with Rob. During one of our break-up conversations, he told me in no uncertain terms that if I did not stay in the relationship, I would be off the show. I broke up with him anyway, and moved into the house that we had been planning to share all by myself. When FX signed us on to the pilot, one of the first things I did was buy my parents a painting that I’d seen several months earlier and had thought they’d love, of a door hovering in the middle of a massive room. The door is cracked open, and you can see the ocean outside running right up to the frame, threatening to spill over. It arrived a couple of days after I was fired. I couldn’t afford it anymore, but I also couldn’t bring myself to return it, so that painting hangs in their apartment still. 📷 📷 📷 I can’t tell you how many people have asked me why I didn’t just stay in the relationship until the show was picked up and my contract was set in stone. The answer is that sleeping in a bed every night alongside a person I was not sure that I wanted to be sleeping with because there was money on the table felt like the worst kind of betrayal; a betrayal both of myself and of my relationship with a man who I loved still, despite the fact that we didn’t seem able to coexist under the same roof. Basically, I just felt like staying with someone under those kinds of pretenses was a shit thing to do. And besides, I honestly thought he was bluffing. I couldn’t even imagine how a person who’d helped to create a show could end up tossed off of it; it didn’t even seem like it could possibly be legal. I remembered that promise we’d made, and I knew Rob, Glenn and Charlie did, too. I trusted them, and I trusted that - despite the obvious tension - everyone would ultimately do what was right, because at 23 years old I still thought that was how things worked. A couple of months later, my agent and manager set up a conference call during which they let me know that while Rob, Glenn and Charlie had been picked up for the series, I hadn’t been. I got a small payout (the equivalent of one episode’s salary), my agent and manager fired me, Rob married the actress who he hired to replace me (Kaitlin Olson, who is lovely and talented and funnier than I could ever possibly be, and whose work I in no way intend to disparage by the writing of this piece), and I never heard from Glenn or Charlie again - not since the day my relationship came to an end. Oh god, was I ever angry. For such a long time. In a panic, I did things I’m not proud of - trying to use my cell phone to record damning conversations (which is a crap thing to do a person regardless of how you feel about them, in addition to being completely illegal); trying to make my next relationship into a Grand Love Affair when it very obviously wasn’t; trying to starve myself into thin air because maybe if I couldn’t feel anything I couldn’t feel the pain of what I’d lost, which felt like everything. I considered suing, of course. I made an appointment at a firm specializing in entertainment law, and I sat there in an enormous maple conference room in my best Banana Republic skirt suit listening to an attorney tell me that if I took on the case, I would be going to court against not only a person whom I still cared for - but also Three Arts Entertainment, FX, and the Fox Network. The case, he told me, would be long and expensive, and no sane casting director would touch me while I was embroiled in it. It was further likely, he told me, that the lawsuit would mean the end of my career as an actress. I would always be known as “that girl who sued FX.” You’ll never work in this town again. I thanked him for his time, and on my way out I stopped into the lobby bathroom to change into a pair of jeans for my next audition. 📷 📷 📷 This account is, I think, more cogently written than my original version, but that’s kinda besides the point; the more important answer to why I’m writing about this again now is that years have passed - years in which my life and self have changed in ways I never, ever saw coming, and certainly couldn’t have imagined as a young ex-actress struggling to figure out what in the world she was supposed to do - and I think this story matters for reasons I didn’t see back then. My friends did wrong by me; I think that’s obvious…but I get why they did what they did, and the wrong that was done was bigger than three men breaking a promise. I don’t blame them for taking advantage of their first big opportunity in a very tough industry. I do, however, blame the social values that created a situation in which a young woman was encouraged by nearly everyone she knew to trade sex and love for money “just for a little while” - because she had no other real recourse, no other way to ensure that she’d be compensated fairly for her work. This isn’t a fun story to tell (although I do think it’s an interesting one, and a meaningful one). It’s a story that makes people - myself included - look not especially honorable, but even beyond that: it’s a tricky thing, writing about an incident that so clearly paints me as the sad sack, the bitter ex-actress who coulda been a star! …and then wasn’t, and was instead relegated to a footnote in the storied history of a television show. I’m that guy who was almost on Friends instead of Matt LeBlanc. I’m the fifth Beatle. So how do I tell a story like this and not sound pathetic? How do I say the words “I feel good about the decision that I made” and have anyone in the world believe me, when the other choice would have meant becoming a massively wealthy star of a mega-successful show? I don’t know if it’s possible to convince most people on this point; there’s a hell of a lot of cultural baggage having to do with the value we place on fame and money involved here. But I also don’t think I care anymore whether I “seem” like a sad failed actress. I’m not an actress. I’m not sad. And I’m also not a failure. The one thing I always wanted more than anything else (and certainly wanted more than I wanted to be an actress) ended up happening: I wrote a book, and it was published. And then I wrote five more, and they were or are about to be published, too. The seventh is coming out next year. I’m living in the place in the world that I want to live in with the people I want to live with, and while I suppose it’d be nice to have a bunch more money, I’m good - great, even - with what I’ve got. I’m happy.
She's very careful not to directly say that Rob is somehow forcing her to have sex and show love to him, well also confusingly expressing at various points that she loved him throughout the breakup and even after it became a hit (something about calling him and according to conversations?), but basically throws her carefully written bitter recollections in the garbage with "i was the 5th Beatle" and "i couldn't trade sex and love for money if i would hang in there... Wouldn't betray myself ... I'm not mad!..." I'm still left wondering what exactly the purpose of rewriting that article and posting it( almost a decade after the events taking place) serves to aid women or justice or whatever discount D was clucking on about

It's honestly difficult to judge since all of their acting was better in the actual episode. So I assume old Dee would have also been better. Though I can't imagine that actress being able to pull off Season 3 and after Dee.
That’s exactly the point I was trying to make in the comments to those who said Kaitlin was better.. it just really wasn’t that great of an accurate representation because it seems like the whole cast acted better in the actual episode vs the pilot.
exactly. Olsen was the one who INSISTED that they change it from "voice of reason" to "one of the gang", and without that change, the show would have failed completely.
Another interesting thing about the pilot versus the official episode is that Dennis seems wayyyy "softer" and more human in the original than he does in the final version. His dialogue and even his performances are completely different. I wonder what made them sort of alter things?
Probably the huge difference in how the actresses played Sweet Dee. The original Dee was a generic female voice of reason, so as her twin, Dennis was more of a generic asshole in contrast.
Original girl isn't bad by any means but when she talks it feels like 2 different shows idk how to explain it, it just dosent fit with the crew. Even when they had the same lines Kaitlins voice just fit with the shows vibe, she gave it extra touch of Sunny vibes.

@@Xbitxx Very good point. They were all dialed back. Had they continued on with first Dee, I’m sure she would have morphed into a better version of the character...like they all have. Having said that, they really did make the better decision to go with Kaitlin.
subtle changes they made are really important, they made dee's character louder, crazier and not an employee but a co-owner it turned from "your bar" to "our bar" and etc
What’s cool about this is the unaired version uses the real bar as shown from the outside whereas in the aired we get the classic set on the inside and the same front outside.
Yeah, it’s a good thing Kaitlin Olson came along to press the others to make Dee more like the rest of the group. The other actress played the part just fine as originally written, but the part itself needed work. Dee would have been totally out of place as the other characters got more intense if she’d remained a voice of reason.
I don't get the comments of "she was too attractive to play Dee." It would've been fine visually, but the thing that actually makes her less suited to the role is her line delivery. It's so boring & I legit zoned out everytime the first actress would speak. (feel bad for saying that because that actress got such a terrible deal in the end)
Her and Kaitlin don't look that much different so these comments are weird. If Kaitlin wasn't playing a character that has been called ugly or a bird for the better part of 15 years, I think no one would be making comments. She looks like so many other blonde actresses in Hollywood that are considered gorgeous.
But it's the truth. The show would've flopped if they didn't replaced Dee. It's sad how bad they treated her and I think she should gotten a better deal out of it instead of just 1 episode's worth of salary but it wouldn't have worked so well without Kaitlyn's input. It wouldn't be as entertaining if Dee was nice and everybody's bullying her.
Olsen was the one who INSISTED that they change it from "voice of reason" to "one of the gang", and without that change, the show would have failed completely.
Dee is low key the most important member of the gang. Like the guys are great, Devito is great, but to find a female actor like her is rare. She does a great job and is like the glue that holds it all together.
Jordan Reid’s story always makes me so sad. It’s always really bothered me that they completely erased her from the history of the show, so I’m pleased to see her scenes get to even exist on the internet. Everyone seems content in their lives now, though, and that’s all that really matters
@@thehantavirus Kaitlin Olsen is amazing, but that wasn’t my point in any way. I do think it’s selfish and unprofessional to dash someone’s shot at a career because she was no longer happy in maintaining a romantic relationship, but they were all immature at the time, and idk if I know anyone that age who isn’t selfish and unprofessional. I still deeply hate that Jordan is completely erased from the history of the show when she did indeed develop Sweet Dee’s character and the show, but the DVD special features act like they only wrote Dee because they needed ‘a girl.’ I adore IASIP, but I stand by what I said. Kaitlin is perfect on the show, but that doesn’t mean someone else’s professional life wasn’t taken away for petty reasons. The thesis statement remains the same, “everyone seems content now, and that’s all that really matters”
Man this really makes you appreciate the subtleties of Kaitlin's acting that just makes the character feel natural compared to someone memorising lines in a local play.
Kaitlin Olsen took a job that probably didn’t need the effort she gave. But the effort she gave put her up there with one of the best characters in TV history.
The thing that puts Olsen over Reid is not just how much better she's doing- look how much better Rob and Glenn are doing too. Olsen is a very giving actor and the production is very bloody lucky to have her.
This is how you know they are all actually super passionate about characters and writing. So many things that are subtle hints to how they'll be later on just sprinkled across this whole first episode. The Rick Astley, the fact Charlie doesn't actually have cancer, Dee's acting career, and Mac using his fists over his words. Just so many dormant freak outs to be seen!
It's amazing the differences between a mock 1 take and extensive editing. It's almost like they're two different things. Oh also, they have different actresses.

This really illustrates how much Kaitlin brings to the show. She’s truly irreplaceable.
*Jordan Reid wasn't psychotic enough. Her beak was too small also.*
Dude this was like a alternate reality where everyone is dialed wayyy back
This is before they got to crack
Its the framing. The show is filmed like they had to return the equipment in an hour. Seinfeld on a budget, to which I believe they were trying to get away from the whole, we live in the big city gambit
Also you get the sense that they were acting around the female lead, which makes every scene feel stiff. Not even a laugh track would help
They're more grounded in real life. S2 onwards becomes Always Sunny reality.
Jordan's portrayal of Dee is calmer and reasonably more mature than the rest of the gang and she does capture the initial idea they had for the character. Kaitlin's version of Dee however is more manic and every bit as morally bankrupt as they are which is the better fit for the show.
i think the way jordan played Dee was played the way they originally wanted but Kaitlin absolutely changed the game
Yeah Jordan put the sweet in sweet dee
yeah I think Kaitlin was exactly what I wanted from Dee. The most mature and societally functioning character on the surface but once you see her true character you finally realize why this is the only friend group that will take her. Dennis first seemed the most psychotic, but Dee has easily proven she's his match. If Dennis is Ted Bundy, then Dee is Vera Renczi

Tbh I don’t think this cast tape was a good representation of how well the original dee could’ve been because if you notice, it’s not only the original dee that was lacking expression, or weak line delivery etc... they all were a lot better in the 2nd version

You definitely see the importance of casting in this video. Old Dee was fine but Olson really made the character pop. A lot of shows are similarly sharply written but it's like it's missing some secret sauce. That's what it feels like watching the scenes with original Dee.
in case you weren't aware, Olsen was the one who told the writers that writing Dee as the "voice of reason" wouldn't work.
Groban likes his women to pop
The last scene was such an improvement from the unaired pilot version. Have you gained a little weight is so random and out of character for Mac, it's so cliché for women being offended too. The "get me a beer" line ties in that Dee was complaining about being overworked in the bar. Fantastic series.
Agreed it aged better.
The weight line was odd, the beer line makes me laugh out loud
@Appladay None of what you said has anything to do with New Dee being better
Yeah this dee is a bit too nice... you’d feel too bad about her getting shit on all the time
It really helps that they punched up the script a lot between the two versions.
I'm actually blown away by how much this shows what KO brings to her character. Absolutely brilliant.

Fundamentally Kaitlin just has WAY better comic timing than old Dee. A skill you can't learn - lady is a natural! All hail sweet Dee!😍
This is the story of the original actress who played "Sweet Dee" :
At one point, one of the guys (I’m pretty sure it was Glenn, but I could be wrong) called a meeting in Rob’s trailer - no secondary cast members, no execs…just the four of us.
📷 📷 📷
I can’t tell you how many people have asked me why I didn’t just stay in the relationship until the show was picked up and my contract was set in stone.
I would always be known as “that girl who sued FX.”
You’ll never work in this town again.
I thanked him for his time, and on my way out I stopped into the lobby bathroom to change into a pair of jeans for my next audition.

This account is, I think, more cogently written than my original version, but that’s kinda besides the point; the more important answer to why I’m writing about this again now is that years have passed - years in which my life and self have changed in ways I never, ever saw coming, and certainly couldn’t have imagined as a young ex-actress struggling to figure out what in the world she was supposed to do - and I think this story matters for reasons I didn’t see back then.
I’m happy.
Damn, that sucks.
I'm not mad!..." I'm still left wondering what exactly the purpose of rewriting that article and posting it( almost a decade after the events taking place) serves to aid women or justice or whatever discount D was clucking on about
Wow. What a story
Very eloquently said.
Jesus christ the movie/show Industry is tough
The actress playing Old Dee is skilled clearly, but she doesn't fit the show's vibe at all.
(Anyone know if she ever did anything else?)
Nah after the show wanted her cut, Rob dumped her and it was a bad breakup and she has done some writing since but no real acting.
@@seanfitzcomedy I’m pretty sure she broke up with him and in response he said that she couldn’t be on the show anymore
@@mossattacks9191 yikes.. thats kinda petty of him
@@agustdz-w9b she has opened up and written about it you can find it online, she claims not only did she get fired after they split but she was their from very start and should be in credited with being a co-creator and developer which would have made her millions even without acting in it and she also said they all agreed to stick together in the event they didn't like them all as actors. Good read not hard to find
Oof. Ouch. She would’ve been set for life.
Old Dee is the wife in every shit run-of-the-mill sitcom on TV.
Dee definitely makes me laugh. Just look at the different deliveries when they say "I'm sorry are you doing another scene?" 8:10
Wow. Until Reid released these clips, none of her scenes in the pilot were ever released publicly.
@@dopeman5g Source?
Original girl isn't bad by any means but when she talks it feels like 2 different shows idk how to explain it, it just dosent fit with the crew. Even when they had the same lines Kaitlins voice just fit with the shows vibe, she gave it extra touch of Sunny vibes.
Olsen was the one who INSISTED that they change it from "voice of reason" to "one of the gang", and without that change, the show would have failed completely.
@@ITI-xi5zx Are you a bot? You repeat the same comment in every one of your replies. Lol.
One thing I'll give the original actress is that she looked more like Dennis than Olson did, seeing as they're meant to be twins.
So no one is going to talk about how Mac was dating old Dee and then ended up marrying new Dee?
hes got a thing for birds
Season one is so great but it’s definitely missing a super crazy person... Charlie is amazing but frank just ties the whole show together
It's crazy how similar they look. Rob definitely has a type.
I dont think he started out looking for a hot blonde to date.. the joke is she’s stereotype of a hot blonde to most men but all of them don’t see it at all.
The first one was dennis' gf.
Sileng Ginileng no she was Rob's girlfriend
@@cjred3682 yeah she was Rob's girlfriend for a while. There's a weird late 90s commercial for YooHoo with both of them as well as the actor that plays The Lawyer from Sunny.
Their both birds!
The old see is more normal and attractive. So wrong for the part
Not bird-like enough
I think Kaitlyn olson is pretty in her own way. A bird way, but a way nonetheless.
🐥
@@gimmickymoospp All these people acting like Kaitlin isn't pretty is weird. Some of her pictures on Instagram are gorgeous and she's definitely downplays her looks on Sunny. They used to intentionally do her hair and make up badly in some of the earlier seasons and Rob has said he uses a filter and intentionally bad lighting to make everyone on the show look a little worse.
@Rickety Cricket u still love her cricket?
6:00 Artemis has always been a goddess 😂❤
Especially with the bleached asshole
Idk what it is about the lighting or the background or the camerawork or what but OG Dee at 10:45 looks like a PS2-era 3D model
Kaitlyn is just so perfect for Dee, the difference is INSANE
She was pretty good tbh. Olson iwas obviously the right actress for the role tho
Olsen was the one who INSISTED that they change it from "voice of reason" to "one of the gang", and without that change, the show would have failed completely.
So glad they went with Kaitlin Olson, the first one was boring
I don’t necessarily think she was boring, I think it was just because it was the pilot vs the actual episode.. if you notice the rest of the cast are being kind of boring as well in the pilot version
@@Xbitxx Very good point. They were all dialed back. Had they continued on with first Dee, I’m sure she would have morphed into a better version of the character...like they all have.
Having said that, they really did make the better decision to go with Kaitlin.
@@SeenACowSki true
@@Xbitxx
you sound boring as well
@@FixedFace wtf are you talking about??
subtle changes they made are really important, they made dee's character louder, crazier and not an employee but a co-owner
it turned from "your bar" to "our bar" and etc
What’s cool about this is the unaired version uses the real bar as shown from the outside whereas in the aired we get the classic set on the inside and the same front outside.
Yeah, it’s a good thing Kaitlin Olson came along to press the others to make Dee more like the rest of the group. The other actress played the part just fine as originally written, but the part itself needed work. Dee would have been totally out of place as the other characters got more intense if she’d remained a voice of reason.
Dee completely makes this show.
Like as a girl part. She fits so well
@@bernadettebrown2576
.. as a "girl part"? how old are you?
Olsen was the one who INSISTED that they change it from "voice of reason" to "one of the gang", and without that change, the show would have failed completely.
what in the he c k does attractiveness have to do with this role? this show was only successful / elevated beyond basic sitcom BECUASE of Olsen.
why is it that appearance is the ONLY thing people ever focus on when female comedians are concerned? +???
Kaitlin Olsen was acting whereas it felt like the other girl was just saying her lines
Dee is low key the most important member of the gang. Like the guys are great, Devito is great, but to find a female actor like her is rare. She does a great job and is like the glue that holds it all together.
She didn’t have the flare that Kaitlin has.
Dennis in shorts.
Jordan Reid’s story always makes me so sad. It’s always really bothered me that they completely erased her from the history of the show, so I’m pleased to see her scenes get to even exist on the internet.
Everyone seems content in their lives now, though, and that’s all that really matters
Also this has taught me that the Coyote Ugly content was there before Kaitlin joined the cast, which is just cute since she had a cameo in the movie
I still deeply hate that Jordan is completely erased from the history of the show when she did indeed develop Sweet Dee’s character and the show, but the DVD special features act like they only wrote Dee because they needed ‘a girl.’
I adore IASIP, but I stand by what I said. Kaitlin is perfect on the show, but that doesn’t mean someone else’s professional life wasn’t taken away for petty reasons.
The thesis statement remains the same, “everyone seems content now, and that’s all that really matters”
Kaitlin's delivery of lines is just so much more punchy and expressive lol love her
Yeah the acting is so bad she's giving the best performance in the show
The difference in cinematography is what has me floored!! When Kaitlyn was their the room was LITERALLY brighter with her in it
Kaitlyn Olsen was the perfect choice for Sweet Dee. I can’t imagine another actress playing the part.
Sarah Silverman?
Kaitlin Olsen was the one who suggested that they change the character from the "voice of reason" to the same deviant as the rest of the gang.
Man this really makes you appreciate the subtleties of Kaitlin's acting that just makes the character feel natural compared to someone memorising lines in a local play.
they really dodged a bullet with that one
10:10 the only way to enter a bar after lying about having cancer
Old Dee looks more like Dennis' sister, but Olsen's Dee acts more like it.
"You know what Dennis, we don't need her..." To original dee
Little did she know what he really meant 😔
This is how you know they are all actually super passionate about characters and writing. So many things that are subtle hints to how they'll be later on just sprinkled across this whole first episode. The Rick Astley, the fact Charlie doesn't actually have cancer, Dee's acting career, and Mac using his fists over his words. Just so many dormant freak outs to be seen!
It's amazing the differences between a mock 1 take and extensive editing. It's almost like they're two different things. Oh also, they have different actresses.
No lie dee is the funniest person on the show and it’s crazy because everyone else is just a millimeter behind
