- A Kansas University researcher says drivers are four times more likely to get into a car crash while using their mobile phones - about as bad as driving drunk. But did you know technology is effecting your creative decision making as well?
Paul Atchley has been conducting research and teaching about cognitive factors related to driving for over 25 years. He is considered one of the nation's foremost experts on issues of vision and attention, including their relationship to driving.
Atchley is part of state and national efforts to reduce distracted driving and works with Fortune 500 companies to improve fleet safety. He also works with groups like the National Safety Council, LifeSavers, FocusDriven, and We Save Lives to provide expertise on the science of distracted driving, which causes thousands of crashes each year.

In one year i got nearly hit by three drivers with their focus on their cellphone, holding their phone up in front.
My boss got hit by an oncoming car where the driver was looking at their cellphone. It only took out the sidemirror, but his wife and kids screamed in fear.
I also had people coming over in my lane clearly looking at me but not focused.
We really need this 🔥💯
Unfortunately people just learn the hard way and in some cases never!!

Our youth is distracted in many ways

If I call someone and they answer, I don't think about where they are or what they are doing, necessarily. We might talk for some time before they tell me they are driving. Ugh!!!! I would never knowingly talk to someone beyond a sentence or two telling them I would talk later, if I knew they were driving. We can say that the driver is at fault for this, but I think we on the other end can help by inquiring at the beginning whether they are driving or not, and if they are, they can call us back when they are not. Most of us are only a few blocks from somewhere we can pull in or over to the curb safely. If it is important, we should stop the car at the first opportunity, and for us callers, we need to be more aware. So many say, "Oh, that's OK. I'm fine. I'm just on my way to......" No. You are not fine, you are driving and talking. Let's all take better care of each other. I don't own a cell phone, so driving and talking on the phone is not an issue for me, but even someone talking to me in the car is distracting.

You know this, and I know this- I but I worry about the guy driving toward us in the opposite lane probably doesn't know this. When will things change? It will only get worse until it gets better.
Paul missed one thing: holding a conversation with people in the car can be just as distracting as over the phone. I've noticed when I drive other people that if I'm paying attention to what they are saying then I'm paying less attention to what's happening on the road, so I have to politely ask them to not disturb their driver.
I think there is one valid use of a phone in the car: as a navigation unit, hands-free of course. Getting myself lost can be more hazardous than glancing at the phone for directions because then my attention will be more on figuring out where I am and which way to go than on what's happening around me.
Very nice "intro" lesson into just a few of the many hazards of cell phones. Sadly it would take many more hours to also cover the privacy issues, wildly debated emf issues and relationship issues that also seem to go hand in hand with society's latest addiction. Good Presentation.

Wait for Facebook's thought-to-text or the Neuralink brain computer interface projects come to fruition. I wonder what will be the state of distracted brains then. We would truly need autonomous cars if we are going to be connected to devices at a deeper level than before and even more distracted than before.
I don't understand the part where he says that talking on the cellphone isn't the same as talking to someone in the same car. I believe the radiation emitting from cellphones affects concentration. and I've experienced negative effects when trying to study after hanging up from a long phone call. I had hoped there was an acknowledgment on the harmful cell phone effects in general, not just to those driving otherwise why isn't it the same when talking to people inside the car?

In Canada it is illegal to drive a car while using a phone. People have been prosecuted, but that’s better than dying or killing someone.
I also noticed that most of the distracted drivers are professionals or rich people! I guess they have the idea that they own the road and they can do what they want because they have money! You see them texting and driving, I guess they have to understand that their lives can change in less than a minute and spend their life in prison!!

phones werent around in 1969, so how did they study it?...everyones brains are not the same....is this for real?
Car phones, also known as mobile phones, have been around since 1940s.
Of course there are some individual differences, but that doesn't apply to spreading your attention over multiple senses. (Listening to someone and looking at the road, traffic and pedestrians.)

i believe that we can improve the brain and train it to use multiple senses yet still keep full attention on both tasks
Jordan Mills The brain’s not designed to multitask. If anything, one just switches tasks quickly. It’s not the same. Also, people’s brains operate very similarly in most ways.
