Rondo knew would have gotten blocked & fouled if he went for the layup , the only thing he’s guilty of is measuring up the size of who was in the post determining if he could make an And1 play on it & I think he noticed his own teammate behind the post defender , but I’m sure he knew they needed a 3 lol
Lakers were out of timeouts so this made sense. If he made it there would be 12 seconds left. Then the spurs would inbound and get fouled with around 7 seconds left maybe more since Popovich is great at creating plays to avoid the foul. That would leave the lakers with just a few seconds to dribble the ball up the court and shoot a contested 3.

Lebron can't count at clutch moments. He always goes for 2 points or passes and Rondo knew they needed more. Klay T, K Durant, Harden or Leonard and MANY OTHERS would try a stepback 3. Lebron just passes and only tries when the ball is put in his hands again and time is up.
LeBron set Rondo up for an easy layup here. Better than playing egocentric hero ball by haphazardly throwing up a contested stepback three.
