- Photographing beavers, wild camping, cooking on the twig stove, and some exciting news... it’s quite a long one, so get a coffee!
🐾 Please subscribe to see more of my videos bit.ly/2RXfyUa 👍 I've got loads of exciting nature photography trips and projects with the wildlife camera coming up 😊
Finally, with the lifting of lockdown travel restrictions, I was able to get out for two nights hammock-camping in the woods, so I headed out to Knapdale in search of the beavers. I was intent on making the most of this time away so I decided that as well as the wildlife photography, I'd also try some fairly ambitious outdoor cooking on the twig stove and add that to the video. Also, it's about time for me to tell the channel my big news, so there's a bit of an announcement over a nice cup of coffee...

GOOD stuff............... Geoff, thanks good luck with the new family
Very much preferring these longer videos keep up the good work and congrats on the baby
Thanks very much Harrison :) That's great to hear as I'm never sure if they're too long... I prefer the idea of the whole trip in one vlog though, so that's what I've gone for..
Congratulations on your exciting news it could not have happened to a nicer guy. The vlog and images were excellent and very enjoyable, look forward to see what you capture on the trail camera, thanks for sharing. 👏👏👍
Thanks very much - it's going to be a grand adventure :)
No beavers on the widlife camera in the end - just the otter and heron that I tagged on at the end of the video..
Excellent video Geoff and congrats on the baby news. Great info on the beavers behaviour. Looking forward to your future videos.
Thanks very much Paul - glad you enjoyed it :)
Lovely video. Nice experience. Good luck for you, your wife and your future child.

Heart congratulations Geoff, I'm guessing that by now you ARE a Dad - always lovely news, especially so in these peculiar times. Good luck & best wishes to you & your family.
Thanks Ian, I am indeed :D
@@GeoffCooper Fabulous, I am a proud Daddy of a now teenage girl......unquestionably the most challenging and most rewarding thing a person can do. I wish you all happiness.
A huge congratulations. The start of an adventure
Congratulations on the exciting news Geoff!
Thanks for the video. Congratulations on the impending new, wee bairn!!
Impressive work (filming, b-roll, editing, photographing). Great nature. Thanks for the journey.
Thanks very much Eigil, glad you came along for the trip :)
Excellent video Geoff, and congrats on your news 👍
Congratulations ! Cheers !
Brilliant content and super production - thank you and congratulations on the wonderful news.
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it! The wee one is just over 2 now and it's been awesome having her around and seeing her grow :D
Congratulations Geoff
Congrats from Eastern Canada!!! Great stuff!
Congratulations on that wonderful news.
Big congratulations to you and Jess, your right that it is life changing but it's fantastic and I wouldn't have it another way. I've had many a great adventure out in nature with my son and that's something that money can't buy. Very peaceful and tranquil area and the mozzies didn't seem to bad, I must admit I laughed when you said a nap in knapdale 😆. I was impressed with the low light video, that dam was quite some size too. I'm extremely pleased to see that you haven't lost your enthusiasm, even though you may have less time out in nature because of Cooper jnr it's all the more meaningful when you can go out and photograph/video. Great video and photos, hope all goes well and we can catch up in the near future. 👌👍
Thanks very much mate - it's certainly quite an adventure we're embarking on! Haha, yeah, shame the nap joke had to be before the announcement or I would have put in a line about 'dad jokes'..!
Look forward to catching up soon :)
Congratulations on your great news .It will a life changer for sure .Your vlogs are top drawer .
Thanks very much Gary :)
Congrats on the baby news Geoff great video mate..
Thanks very much Ted!
Excellent news - congratulations
Smashing video Geoff!!
Congratulations on your new arrival
Geoff it was great. You sure don't mess around with the photography gear; you packed an arsenal of cameras and lenses. I particularly loved the macro work with the 500 mm lens. Keep up the good work, I'll be watching for you on youtube.
Thanks very much Fred 😀 Yeah, I reckon I took a bit too much kit on that trip - post lockdown over excitement!!
I'm glad your able to get out and spend time in nature again. The video is great.
And... Congrats.
Big smile🙂
Thanks Rino, it was so great to just be out in the woods, and the wildlife encounters made it even better :)
congratulations! and a great video will soon be heading that way
Congrats mate! Wishing you and you're family all the best! And thank you for another amazing video.
Thanks very much John - glad you enjoyed it :)
Congratulations!
Another fantastic video there Geoff! It looks like a blissful way to spend a few days. Many congratulations on your news too! All the best.
Thanks very much Euan :) It’s certainly an excellent part of the world to hang out in nature!
That was breakfast time bliss for my whole family Geoff. Talking of which, hearty congrats! You're such a genuine dude full of integrity and passion, so glad you're out there again, looking forward to part II. Wishing you well, Si.
Thanks very much Si :) glad you all enjoyed it!
Thanks for a great vlog. Hope all goes well for you and the little one when it arrives.
Thanks very much Phil, it's going to be a great adventure :)
Epic video! And congrats!
Congratulations Geoff :) That’s really good news. As being a father of two, and a stepdad to one, it can be hard making time to do as much wildcamping and long trips, but it’s so worth it anyways. Great video and as always I’m looking forward to the next.
Thanks very much Kjell, it's going to be a different kind of adventure!! Glad you enjoyed the video :)
Congrats!
Top class video Geoff, you have really captured the whole experience very, very well. Good look with your newborn and I look forward to more videos once your life returns to normal.
Thanks very much Joe :)
Excellent video Geoff, great stuff and congrats.
Thanks very much Rob :)
Congrats Geoff! You're going to be a great dad! So happy for you man ❤❤❤❤
Thanks 😊
So awesome Geoff! Enjoy the changes in your family. She will change so fast, try to keep up ;)
Looking forward to see your next vlog ;)
Thanks very much Jeroen, it's going to be a real adventure :) Yeah, the next video is going to be a good one - it's got this cool Dutch guy in it... maybe you know him ;)
Excellent video Geoff. I actually thought the footage you got late on the first night in the low light was excellent. Great to come along with you on this trip and share your passion - although I certainly felt for you at times with that load on your back! All the very best for the future - exciting times ahead!
Thanks very much :) I was really pleased with that footage too considering it was handheld, mostly manual focus and the maximum ISO my Z7 could do!
Wow that was brilliant Geoff. Also just great seeing comments from as far afield as Canada and Australia.
Thanks very much Simon, glad you enjoyed it :)
Another cracking video Geoff and congratulations on your great news :)
Thanks very much Craig :)
Congratulations Geoff !! I enjoyed the video very nice.
Thanks veru much, glad you enjoyed it :)
Congratulations on the imminent arrival !
Great video Geoff and what a lovely location, and to see the beavers, awesome! On my list to see🙏👍:
Best news of all is becoming a dad, it certainly is a game changer but it’s the best thing ever, although hard at time’s, lol..
My boys now 3.5 and is already really appreciating the natural world, naming leaves on trees, birds and some fungi, so following his dads footsteps, it’s awesome news congrats again to you and your good lady:-) all the best R :-) 🙏👍
Thanks Richard - it's a really exciting adventure we're embarking on!
Beavers are great to watch and even reasonably predictable (rare enough in wildlife photography) :) Once this pandemic business is over next year maybe we could do a collaboration going to find them? (though you also have some closer to you on the River Otter)...
@@GeoffCooper It certainly is Geoff! I'd really like that, more than happy to come up your way and you are more than welcome down here but I feel you might have to be on alert 5 Dad, lol.. I'm planning a trip up to Scotland in the spring so maybe that might be possible? They have introduced Beavers at a place called Ladock quite close to me so maybe a possibility!
@@RichardBirchett great stuff - getting something organised next spring sounds like a plan 👍
Serenity =) Love a long watch to relax and dream of our own travels and experiences in the natural world =)
Thanks :) Glad you enjoyed coming along on the trip!
Amazing Video, Tanks for sharing, & good look on the Baby!!!
Thanks :)
Congratulations! Lovely video too 😊
Thanks Hannah :)
Great vide Geoff what an exiting adventure in a beautiful and peaceful location a great place to spend a couple of nights. Big congratulations to you on becoming a Dad.
Thanks very much Martin :) Glad you enjoyed it - it's a cracking location that I find myself returning to whenever I can!
This was an incredible video! Congratulations mate, that is incredible!
Thanks Tony, glad you enjoyed the video :)
Glad I ran across your Beaver video. Some fairly good shots but sure they would have been fantastic if only they would have come closer. The duck was great and the sound of the Tawny Owls, wow. That is what I call relaxing in the woods except for the midges, haha.
Thanks Harold, glad you enjoyed it :) Yeah, getting a close encounter in old light is the dream... one day!
Love these videos Geoff! Congrats on your good news too :)
Thanks Joe :)
Excellent video and a huge congrats on your great news.. all the best in the future and I'll look forward to your future videos..
Thanks very much Noel - glad you enjoyed it :)
I never imagined beavers being featured in UK video. Fascinating creatures. The trail camera video was a surprise, the Heron and the Otter, great capture I think. And, congratulations on you becoming a father. Exciting times ahead. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks very much Glen :) Yeah, the reintroduced beavers are doing really well and it’s great to be able to see the here!
Fabulous video and congratulations
Thanks for a 48 minute escape from reality. Wonderful video/photos. Congratulations, you're going to be a great dad!
Thanks very much Terry, glad you enjoyed it :)
Excellent video very interesting Geoff, well done!
Thanks Tony :)
Fantastic video Geoff! Really enjoyed the following along with the Beavers, fantastic creatures they are!
I've been re-finding my love for wild camping recently, haven't done any for many years! But recently did a mountain hike and wild camp on Cadair Idris in Snowdonia. It was amazing fun and I had a real blast!
But becoming a dad!! That's a huge deal buddy, massive congrats!
Thanks very much Gareth, glad you enjoyed coming along on the trip :) Wild camping just feels like a nicer way to be connected with the environment you're staying in!
Congrats mate.
Congratulations! Very good video too.
Thanks very much Hacène :)
Hi Geoff
Thanks for that i did know that there were beavers in the UK .Cheers Derek and congratulations daddy !
Hi Derek, yeah, it was a reintroduction around 10 years ago and it's great to see that they're doing really well
Congratulations on the upcoming fatherhood. Loved the video and look forward to more in the future.
Thanks very much - glad you enjoyed the video :)
BEAUTIFUL VIDEO GEOFF. THANKS FOR THIS ADVCENTURE, FOR EVERYBODY... BEST REGARDS. NANO.
Thanks very much - glad you enjoyed it :)
Great video Geoff, nice to see those beavers again, I must try and get up to Knapdale and have a look for them assuming I can find the location, congratulation of the news as well, cheers
Thanks very much David :) Give me a shout if you want a hint or two for finding them..
Fantastic video Geoff and congratulations on being a dad soon! Good luck and enjoy, I will miss your videos but you have more important things to do!
Thanks very much Gladys - I'm sure I'll be able to get the occasional trip / vlog done along the way :)
Good on ya! I'm waiting for the screaming temps to drop here in Southern California as I have many historical places to explore in the deserts. I have my new camping equipment that I am excited to try out. In the desert, I can hear my ears ring! Too much to shoot, not enough time :)
Enjoy that silence :)
Cool video =) congrats sir!
You'll make a super Dad. I have a feeling though that photography will have another interest. Great video.
Thanks Steve - I reckon children probably count as widlife half the time so it won't be that different ;)
@@GeoffCooper HaHa. You made me smile there. I lost my Mum 4 years ago - had some fun with her. always up for a laugh or mischief. We took the kids to a wildlife park and there was a huge rock stationed there with "Wildlife" written on it. I got my Mum to do her silly pose peering from the back of the stone. So, Kids are definitely wildlife, but I think perhaps Mums & Dads can be too. Enjoy it.
great video
My god that looked hard work! Great idea two nights in a hammock should prepare you nicely for what you have to come with a new born baby! Great vlog and congratulations.👍😂
Haha, yeah, I took far too much stuff with me... too many toys! Actually I'll probably be dreaming of the hammock when being kept awake at night - I find it very comforable to sleep in :)
Nice video, Greetings from Italy :)
Congratulation :)
Dear Geoff... What a awesome video! Must have been a really nice 2 days overniter in the woods there with the beavers in scotland :-) And big congrats to you with being a dad ;-) I hope some day when my kids are a little bigger i can do the same as you here i Denmark where i live or maybe a trip to sweden or norway :-)
Thanks very much :) Yes, it was an absolutely awesome trip! Hope you get some good trips out in Denmark, even if you don't go for long overnighters currently.. Hopefully I will be able to get out for some adventures next year, but for now I am also going to be limited to short trips in the local area for the same reasons ;)
Woow Wonderful
excellent video Geoff, photographing beavers are something I want to do, don´t really have in the southern sweden thou.
Congrats on becoming a father, will fit you perfectly, can see you bringing the young one out on some photo adventures! =)
Cheers!
Thanks very much Andy, it's going to be quite an adventure :) It's really great that we have the beavers here now - they've done really well after their reintroduction around 10 years ago...
@@GeoffCooper glad to hear! They are a very misunderstood animal!
WoW!!! Wish you have a lovely baby it will be great experience to be Dad, even the thought of it will give goose bumps and make your adrenaline rush. loved your video and this is first time watching yours, wish and hope to see more from you.
Thanks very much Jai :) Glad you enjoyed the video and welcome to the channel!
Congratulations! One of the first animals I shot when I started wildlife photography was a colony of beavers near my home. After a few days they ignored me and would just go about their business. But here in Canada they're not so rare.
Thanks Ian :) They're great characters to spend time with, regardless of how rare / or not !
I read the title and thought the beavers gonna camp with you. Disappointed! 😅 0:42 I know that song! I would have made a whole series out of this, so hands up for putting this into one big video, Geoff :)
Just got to the big news (I always comment early 😅), crazy news. Congrats!
Hehe, not quite such a close encounter as that! Though once when I was camping at the same location I heard a beaver moving about in the flooded area around 20m away while I was in the hammock!
Enjoyed this. Very true to the experience. Wish the beaver to other ratio was higher, but suspect you do too. Maybe the title should be Camping and scouting for beavers, as some may not be happy with the lack of complete success on the beaver front.
Thanks Erik, glad you enjoyed it! The beavers of Knapdale are pretty elusive to say the least ;) I actually think the title is fair for the content: 'Wildlife Photography'... 'with Scottish Beavers', and my trip was also about general wildlife in the area, where the local landscape has been changed a lot by the presence of the beavers as well... I would feel a bit cheeky if I called it 'Photographing Scottish Beavers' though for the reasons you mention!
Awesome stuff buddy! My sons 28 n daughter is 25 lol ....will the net not fit on a separate line maybe mod it so it can? epic vlog as always 😎😉👌👍
Thanks 😊 Glad you enjoyed it!
With the net, it does have its own lines to support it, but the hammock still has to go through otherwise there can’t be a sufficiently tight ‘seal’ to stop the little buggers getting in!!
Hi there I have just watched another 3 of your videos and 1st late can I just say absolutely fantastic amazing and really informative I look forward to watching your videos every time great keep up the good work.
I am just wondering also what would be the highest ever ISO In which youwould shoot with photography wise and when and why would you use this.
Also which is the highest ISO you would use for videography when and why would you Sis also hope to hear from you soon kind regards. 😀😃😁😆😇🤩👍👌
Thanks very much Scott - glad you're enjoying the channel!
The highest ISO question is an easy one: I'll use the maximum my camera can give me - sure, I'll play about trying to get it lower by trying to get the shutter speed down or underexposing a bit, but in the end, I'd rather have a noisy image than not have one at all! Same goes for video, though it's a bit easier as the shutter speed is already quite low... Those beavers at 12:22 in this video were at f/5.6, 1/60 and ISO25600!
This means I would have the best chance to have something I can work with when I get back at the computer, and the ability to remove noise etc in software these days is insane. If I can get something that helps tell a story at the maximum ISO available, then it's worth having!
@@GeoffCooper Thank you for the really quick reply I really appreciate it.
Have you ever shot at 51200 or even 204800 given your EV 2 on Z6 ?.
And if so what did you think of the images
The highest I Have ever shot at his 25000 and was quite happy with the outcome also what software are you using for noise etc to get rid of it.
Kind regards
@@scottnoble1076 I've not used the Z6 that much for stills and while I have a plan to test Z7 resolution vs Z6 better noise in really low light, I've not got around to it yet... For noise reduction I am turning it off completely in camera and in Lightroom, and relying on Topaz DenoiseAI
So hard to watch you camping out when we’re locked down here in Melbourne ( can’t move further than 5 km from home only to exercise or shop) and have been for most of the last 5 months and probably another month to go 😩 (damn this virus). Congratulations on your impending fatherhood
Thanks Ruben :) Man that sounds pretty rough - hope the infection rate drops there soon and you can get out of lockdown for your summer!
Congratulations on your first, do you want to sell me your gear now or later 🤢
I have a 3,5 and 7 year old and they are the reason my 500/4 is on its tripod in the conservatory instead of being with me in the Brecon Beacons or Forest of Dean 🙃
It’s still a great thing thought 😀
Thanks! Haha, yeah... maybe that's why I've invested in the lightweight options after all, so I can still carry camera stuff with all the baby things as well ;)
Geoff Cooper I did the same, I added a Fuji X-Pro1 and an X-T1 with a carbon Manfrotto BeFree, sooooo light 😀
Congrats!
