- Searching for beavers and wild camping at a new location in the West of Scotland... Will carrying in my incredibly heavy 400mm f/2.8 lens be worthwhile for low light photography? Will my new wildlife camera capture anything during the night?

Congratulations, so glad you got some great images and video to compensate for your monumental efforts, especially considering the horrendous images! Outstanding film!
Thanks, remembering those midges makes me itch a little even now!!
Very nice work bro. Im very impressed. Keep rockin photography man.
Thanks man - good to see you here!🤘
cracking video geoff looking forword to the next one
Very nice videos. thank you for this beautiful sharing. I really like your work.
Thanks very much :) Glad you enjoyed it!
Always enjoy when you post a new video! Great video and photos of the beavers 😀
Thanks Verlene :) Glad you enjoyed it!
super mate its something I have never seen what a frill it must have been
Thanks :) Yeah, it was an awesome encounter!
Fantastic - you brought us on a great wildlife adventure! Thanks so much.
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it :)
Really enjoyed that Geoff, great images for such low light👍
Thanks very much :) Yeah, I was really happy to be able to get them!
Love your work Geoff!! I look forward to every video.
Thanks :) Glad you enjoyed it!
Geoff, lovely video my friend! You and Morten Hilmer are two of my most watched channels. I especially like your videos as they give me some ideas of places to visit as you’re not that far away from me, I honestly thought that the midges would be away by now too! Looking forward to the next one. Cheers
Thanks very much Tony, that's high praise indeed :) This was recorded in peak midge season in june, but I'm happy to report there weren't any around when I was out on Saturday watching deer!!
Great video Geoff!
Glad to see you out there again with the beavers, could imagine the pure joy and excitment of getting those shots of the beaver after logging around on that equipment haha!
Well done buddy! =)
Thanks very much Andy :) Yeah, it was an awesome trip and some of the best experiences I've ever had with the beavers!
Great video, Geoff. Wonderful footage, information and images. Quick question. Do you do workshops?
Thanks very much Andrew, glad you enjoyed it! Currently no - with a full-time job and a 2-year-old at home I simply can't commit the time... That is something I would like to start doing sometime in the future though!
Thanks Geoff. I'll keep an eye out for when you do. In the meantime, I'll just carry on watching your videos and being isnpired by them.
Certainly more idyllic than our last visit and as you say it all came good in the end. I must say, I definitely did not envy you with with all those mozzies. That lense is some beast Geoff, pleasure to watch as always 👌
Thanks very much :) Yeah, the midges were pretty intense, and as for the lens, I'm sure I will miss the f/2.8 aperture going forward, but I won't miss carrying it around!!
Always happy to see some beavers.
Yep my 400mm f2.8 AFS lens is a great heavyweight too.
So I've just received the 400mm f4.5 Z lens. Its even good handheld...🦘
Yeah, to be honest, I have only used the new 400mm on a tripod for video so far..
This was really a nice watch for a Friday night.
And I'm really glad you got both great video and good pictures, because it looked like you payed a bloody price for it.
I would have gone mental with such amounts of thirsty insects around!
Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it Rino :) Yeah, I definitely had some itches from that trip for a few days afterwards! Just part of the experience here in Scotland though!
Brilliant video Geoff, pleased you found them this time & got some great footage
Be interesting to see how you get on with the 4.5, I’ve just got mine and I love it!
Thanks very much Andy, it was a great trip in the end :) The 400mm f/4.5 is pretty awesome - I was up in the highlands yesterday watching the rutting red deer stags, and it worked really nicely!
Incredible. Your videos are just so well made Geoff it's unreal :)
Thanks very much Joe, glad you enjoyed it :) I'm actually just watching your Minsmere video right now while answering these comments!
@@GeoffCooper Ah nice one! Well just know I admire your content very much :)
Great video, keep them coming. Where were you to get the Beavers?
Thanks very much Mark, these were in Knapdale forest :)
Well done Geoff. Your dedication and perseverance shows. Are you happy with the Z 400/4.5 or would you prefer the 400/2.8 and/or 500 PF back instead?
Thanks very much :) I am really happy with the 400mm f/4.5, and with the 1.4x TC it's close enough to the 500mm PF that I don't really miss that (and I have sold it)... I do miss the light gathering of the 400mm f/2.8G VR, but not the huge bulk of the thing! I haven't sold it yet but have it listed in a few places and will do so as soon as I find a buyer for it...
@@GeoffCooper
Thanks Geoff. I watch and try to capture sightings of Eurasian Otters and Common Kingfishers, not from a hide, blind or wearing camouflage. If you had a choice and money was not an issue, would it be the Z 400/2.8 TC or newly announced Z 600/4 TC?
@@nikon_z9_images great stuff - I really enjoy watching otters whenever I can :) I think it would be the Z 400mm f/2.8 TC as the last extra stop in low light is probably more important than the extra reach, and the 400mm pairs well with the 2x TC if more is needed beyond the in-built TC... My plan (dream) is actually to save / invest and wait a year or two to see if there start to be a few of them appearing on the used market...
@@GeoffCooper
Fantastic to hear your thoughts. In the past, having owned the 300/2.8 VR, 200-400/4 VR II, 180-400/4 TC with external TCs, I was always at the telephoto end with the zooms and cropping images on top. Hence, I value your opinion and experience. I’m sure in time you will achieve buying the Z 400/2.8 TC. All the best!
Hey, Geoff! Great video. For the bugs, get a thermacell! I wouldn’t go in the woods without it. Way better than spraying insect repellent all over you.
Thanks :) Yeah, I really need to get myself something like that for next summer! I always forget how annoying they are until I’m actually out there..!
@@GeoffCooper yes! Most things we don’t think about until we’re in the thick of it. 😬 i really enjoy your videos. Especially with the 400 2.8G VR. I purchased this lens earlier this year. I enjoy seeing what you do with it. Have a wonderful day, Geoff!
Brilliant, thank you. I think you could be right, she does look pregnant. A definite waddle. All the best. 👍📷😎
Thanks, yeah, I had also heard that they were expecting kits there, so I guess that one was the mother-to-be :)
Very true record, thank you for sharing😀😀
Love the scenery. Awesome video.
Hi Geoff
Good to see you out in the great out doors making UA-cam videos .
Cheers Derek
Thanks Derek :)
Awesome video Geoff really great to see the Beavers doing so well.
Even though I live in Wales I am a Scotsman and one thing I don’t miss is those Scottish Midgies l was actually itching as I watched your video lol 👍😃
Thanks very much Craig, yeah, the reintroduction has gone really well there and they're thriving :) Also, as I commented on the trailcam footage, I'm pretty sure that beaver was about to have kits! .. and yeah, the midges were intense and I itched for days after that, even after using plenty of repellent!
Absolutely fascinating. i have never seen a beaver in real life so I found your footage superb. I do motorsport photography and to cart my 200-500 f/5.6 zoom Nikkor + body around I use a cheap shopping trolley (£35) lined with thick foam. The beauty of a shopping trolly is that it has largeish wheels so good over undulating ground, so much better than a wheelie camera case..
Thanks very much Keith :) Interesting point about the shopping cart - many of the places I would take my kit in a rucksack would be unsuitable for a wheeled thing, but those tracks would have been ok... definitely something to keep in mind!
Nice kuksa, lovely beaver.
Many thanks :)
Wow Geoff what an amazing experience. That was well worth all the hard effort to get those shots and that video. We always think what we could’ve done better but I could tell you were absolutely buzzing from the experience. Cheers Keith
Thanks Keith, it certainly was an amazing experience :)
Wow amazing footage of the beavers! It’s good to see as we don’t see them much in England!
Thanks very much :)
Cracking video Geoff and so glad you managed to get those amazing close-ups of the beavers. Makes all the lugging and getting eaten alive by midgies worthwhile! I feel your pain, being the proud owner of a Canon 600 f4 which is made of cast iron and weighs a ton, but I can’t bear to part with it!
Thanks very much Steve, glad you enjoyed it :) Yeah, that encounter made all the discomfort worthwhile, and it was mostly downhill to walk back to the car the next day so that was a lot nicer! I've not actually managed to sell the beasty 400mm yet, so who knows, if nobody buys it it might make another appearance yet!!
That was enjoyable... and nice to see you still got time for such things while being a father.
Thanks very much :) Yeah, I certainly cannot go out as much as before and definitely not for multiple nights, but a few times per year is still possible :D
Sorry I thought this was a totally different video based on the title. I’ll leave now….
Clickbait titles strike again, lol! I should also have put that they were wet :p
I've enjoyed the video Geoff!
Thanks Gladys :) Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent content , I don’t know how your can cope with that number of midge 🦟🦟🦟🦟🦟
Thanks very much :) Yeah, looking back on these videos I don’t know how I stand it either… at the time I just have to put up with them!!
