I feel like the way the school reacted to his performance reflects how the movie was received by audiences. At first they didn't know what to make of it. But then it became a huge hit.
Bingo. Didn’t understand or like it when I saw it in theaters, then rewatched years later, and enjoyed it so much, I incorporated it into a high school film elective class I taught.
I love that they added that scene with the girl on her bike riding up to Uncle Rico. Despite all his bravado and machoism, he was just a sad 40-year-old washup who wanted to find his soulmate.
I like that. Makes sense considering that during his spirited speech of living life rich, he was brought to a period of regrettable silence after he mentioned the phrase "soulmate" moments later.
In the DVD minidocumentary the actress who does Lafawnduh sums it up pretty well: this movie is not about violence or darkness, it is about friendship, about laughing at life. There are almost no movies like this one anymore
That's because studios aren't allowed to make funny movies anymore. This movie couldn't get made today because someone would complain that Pedro's accent is racist, or something . . .
I like how he is walking like its just another day. Him and Pedro basically changed the dynamics of that school and he could care less its on to Teather Ball.
That's what's so beautiful about it. Despite the dynamic around him changing, and even getting the girl he loves to notice him, Napoleon will always do what he chooses to do. He's a sharply intelligent person who sees the world for what it is. He may cope with goofy fake stories and flights of fantasy but he's one of the few who truly knows what's up at that age.
I never really noticed that Kip was finally moving out of his grandma's house and finally taking the next step in his life. He's finally leaving his small town and is off to live his life with his love, Lafawnduh. Napoleon's one and only smile in the film towards his brother's progress symbolizes that for the first time in a long time, Napoleon wants to be like his older brother, and at last has something flippin' sweet to look forward to: life.
Holy shit, I never realize he gave that slight smile. And I also just now realized Napoleon didn’t smile at any other point in the movie. I like the movie even MORE now, they definitely were sending a message with that.

Seriously, my favorite part about this scene is Rico’s redemption with his beautiful ex. He finally realizes that he has everything he ever needed in his life after being broken physically and spiritually by his own grandiose ego. He’s lucky that she would ever come back at all and his subtle grin seeing her forgiving shows that. This movie has much more depth than people realize.
Look how Napoleon doesn’t even care that he changed the world, he was just himself. Rico spends the whole movie literally trying to save the world and lament not being someone else and it’s only when he’s lost everything he’s able to see it was in front of him the whole time

I like how we don't even need to hear from the principal that Pedro won. The audience applauding loudly really said it all. This is a movie that won't ever get old to me. It gets better and better everytime I watch it.
I honestly love the is movie and this ending is even better now that I’ve grown up. I just love how pretty much all our main characters got various happy endings. Kip got to meet up with his online woman whom he eventually married. Pedro won the class election and celebrated with a proud family. grandma may not have been a major character but she still got a happy ending with recovering from her injury and going home to her family and having some quality time with her lama. Even Rico who was a big douche throughout the movie still had something good happen for him that could possibly turn his life around. Last but certainly not least, napoleon got to hang out with deb who now seems to like him again and possibly a nice relationship can bloom. I just love that it ends on a good note
I just realized this is the first scene where Pedro smiles in the entire movie. So he finally becomes happy after moving to a weird town. Kip finally finds love, Rico meets a new love and finally moves on from highschool after his football arm and dream is broken. Grandma returns and restores balance to the farm. And Napoleon finally gets a girl that likes him for his “sweet tetherball skillz”

One of the greatest endings to a film period. The whole film is goddamn perfect and it has something cinema nowadays is missing. Napoleon made sure Pedro won and gave him hope and became the most popular guy in the school Pedro became Class President a dream of his that came true and is now more hopeful and happy Kip moved out and married the woman he loves Uncle Rico reconnected with his girlfriend Grandma recovered from her injuries Deb also reconnects with Napoleon and their friendship grows closer Every character's arc was completed something, I have never really seen in a film before. At the start of the film they are somewhat lost but each one of them impacted each other in a different way which in turn helped them overcome their difficulties and fears.
Whats truly great about this ending is how it ties up everything with a nice bow tie. Pedro has the admiration of the entire school, and in turn the culture will shift. Grandma has recovered and restores balance to the house. Kip has found someone who loves him in all his geeky glory. Uncle Rico reunites with his estranged girlfriend, finally able to become happy and move on from his past. And Napoleon has the respect of everyone and he gets the girl. It really doesn't get better than this. Fantastic closing to a fantastic movie.
I think he's smiling for both of them, in a way, and it was set up earlier in the movie during the Rex Kwan Do scene. Rex talks about the buddy system, and how important it is for buddies to have each other's backs. Neither main character realizes it, but that's exactly the role they play for each other in the movie. Pedro provides Napoleon with a genuine emotional connection - something he clearly doesn't have at this moment in time. Napoleon eventually repays that through supporting Pedro's campaign, culminating in the dance at the end. He sticks his neck out for his friend time and again because that friend was the first person who ever tried to get to know the real him. Both Pedro and Napoleon finally learn what it means for friends to "have each others' backs"

This is easily one of my absolute favorite feel-good closures to a film. All the main characters deservedly have happy endings all at once, the hero takes no credit for his butterfly effect of good deeds apart from a brief smile, and instead of all of that sappiness being actually sappy, the montage still manages to maintain the oddball humor encompassing the entire film. Seriously the most subtle masterpiece ever filmed.
The best part of this movie is how everyone ends up happy in their own way shape or form, Napoleon pulled off a bomb ass show, Pedro was loved by everyone at his new school, Kip found love, Same with Uncle Rico, and even grandma got better

I remember being inside jail for a month for traffic violations and this song which I didn’t know the name of began playing in my head on the last night I was in there, I remember leaving as the doors behind kept closing the song was getting more louder in my head until I made it outside and the music just stopped …..that moment of being released comes with a relief but the outside world still is the same so that’s why the music in my head stopped once I made it outside ……
Something about that scene with Uncle Rico makes me happy. Maybe it's the shy awkward wave and smile but this isn't the same gross creepy arrogant guy from earlier. He seems to have humbled himself a little and maybe just maybe will act like a decent person around that woman

Man, it's not included on this clip, but that song, "The Promise" in the end ... it hits hard when that piano starts ... just brings back growing up in the late 80s from grade school to high school.
One of my favorite movies ! There IS an alternative ending, though....after the credits roll, the scene fades back in, in a beautiful meadow, where Kip & LaFawnduh`s wedding is taking place. Everybody is there, except for Napoleon....all of a sudden, he comes riding up on a wild horse that he captured, and he gives it to the newlyweds, who climb up onto the horse, and ride off into the sunset....VERY unusual ending !
The music is just awesome and without a word of Dialogue I think everything about this ending is great as everything for everyone all works out. - Kip and LaFawnduh end up happy together - Grandma gets out of the hospital - Uncle Rico goes back to making videos and reunites with his estranged girlfriend - Pedro wins as class president - Napoleon and Deb reconcile over a game of tetherball What more could you ask for?
First time I saw Napoleon Dynamite I thought it was the dumbest movie I had ever watched. I was too old to understand the humor but teens I was teaching guitar to helped me to 'get it'...... Watched again, now, 3 times, and I think that it is a cult classic! Soooo funny!
The first time I watched it, I really didn't care for it. I went to wash the dishes, and then it all hit me about 15 minutes later, and I laughed my ass off. I had to go back and watch it again.
I really fucking love this song. It makes me feel good, like part of a community working in sync like cogs in a clock. Makes me think of confidence in the sense of "don't care about what others think of you, just be your authentic self" and go on a heroes journey type beat. And to go out in the world and experience things and do things without worry or fear of what others think as well as to take a leap of faith on the things you desire to do. Its like a song of liberation and courage and exploration. Its like youve crawled through mud and shit your whole life while everyone laughs at you and tells you youre a loser or youll fail or your weird. And you finally succeed at your goal and everyone who called you names and laughed are now seeing you for the unique and special person you always tried to be. And all this comes from a movie about an autistic kid, his weird older brother, delusional uncle, and a Llama. Brilliant!!
I've been listening to Penguin Café Orchestra, off and on, for somewhere in excess of 38 years. I saw them at Glastonbury in, I think, 1994 and almost nuked the tune Perpetuum Mobile when I recognised it from the solitary first note and whooped like an idiot in between that and the second note. Making PCO first among equals Simon Jeffes (RIP) smile in surprise as a result was a joy in itself. Anyway there was a time when a number of PCO pieces were almost ubiquitous wherever a soundtrack on TV, at least, called for a track capturing a feeling of--I'm not sure what to call it--a kind of gentle exuberance, or just non-crazy joy. In particular, this song, Perpetuum Mobile, and Telephone and Rubber Band saw sooo much service, in so many films and TV shows. I don't think I've ever seen or heard any of them used to more brilliant effect than in this sequence. The way the music opens up as, first, Pedro senses that his world may be opening up too, and the way the music then accompanies a kind of resolution for every major character until the final swingball scene and brings pretty much the whole ending together--absolutely brilliant.
Napoleon Dynamite was always a favorite movie of mine, and I especially liked the ending. About a year ago I got really into Penguin Cafe Orchestra, and when I heard this song playing in a Penguin Cafe Orchestra playlist I immediately thought to myself “THAT’S THE SONG FROM NAPOLEON DYNAMITE!”
Lion King when Mufasa died, A perfect World when Kevin Costner dies and the ending of this movie, only times I’ve had to physically keep myself from crying over a movie. Whole thing is perfection

Thanks for the upload. God knows how I got this recommendation. On a day when I needed something like this. I was supposed to speak about something today and I blew it really bad (maybe in my mind). Lack of prep maybe or because of all the negativity because of covid. I ended up saying things that maybe I shouldn't have said. Nothing wrong or insulting but things out of context. The big takeaway of this movie for me is don't be afraid to express yourself. Feeling much better now honestly.

My first viewing of Napoleon Dynamite was a free ticket at the Seattle International Film Festival, and like many of you, I wasn't sure at first what to make of this quirky tale and unknown movie at the time. Then I got an extra ticket b4 the movie was even released to theaters nationwide. Saw it that 2nd time and totally fell in love with it! I get the message too, just be yourself and let your light shine, no matter what people may think or say, who cares! Be the one and only original & genuine YOU. God made only one YOU, and be glad, love who you are, for there is no other YOU on this whole wide wonderful world of almost 8 billion (and climbing fast!) people! Btw, I took a trip 2 years ago to the Craters of the Moon N.M. in southern Idaho, and made sure on my journey to stop by Preston, ID, where Napoleon was filmed and swung by the high school after checking out the little town. Jon Heder is amazing; whar a comedic genius! He helped the writer write this screenplay I understand!

I think he's smiling for both of them, in a way, and it was set up earlier in the movie during the Rex Kwan Do scene. Rex talks about the buddy system, and how important it is for buddies to have each other's backs.
Neither main character realizes it, but that's exactly the role they play for each other in the movie. Pedro provides Napoleon with a genuine emotional connection - something he clearly doesn't have at this moment in time. Napoleon eventually repays that through supporting Pedro's campaign, culminating in the dance at the end. He sticks his neck out for his friend time and again because that friend was the first person who ever tried to get to know the real him. Both Pedro and Napoleon finally learn what it means for friends to "have each others' backs"

This is easily one of my absolute favorite feel-good closures to a film. All the main characters deservedly have happy endings all at once, the hero takes no credit for his butterfly effect of good deeds apart from a brief smile, and instead of all of that sappiness being actually sappy, the montage still manages to maintain the oddball humor encompassing the entire film.
Seriously the most subtle masterpiece ever filmed.

I remember being inside jail for a month for traffic violations and this song which I didn’t know the name of began playing in my head on the last night I was in there, I remember leaving as the doors behind kept closing the song was getting more louder in my head until I made it outside and the music just stopped …..that moment of being released comes with a relief but the outside world still is the same so that’s why the music in my head stopped once I made it outside ……
Something about that scene with Uncle Rico makes me happy. Maybe it's the shy awkward wave and smile but this isn't the same gross creepy arrogant guy from earlier. He seems to have humbled himself a little and maybe just maybe will act like a decent person around that woman

Man, it's not included on this clip, but that song, "The Promise" in the end ... it hits hard when that piano starts ... just brings back growing up in the late 80s from grade school to high school.

One of my favorite movies ! There IS an alternative ending, though....after the credits roll, the scene fades back in, in a beautiful meadow, where Kip & LaFawnduh`s wedding is taking place. Everybody is there, except for Napoleon....all of a sudden, he comes riding up on a wild horse that he captured, and he gives it to the newlyweds, who climb up onto the horse, and ride off into the sunset....VERY unusual ending !

A friend of mine said the theme of this movie is loneliness, and after seeing this ending, that assessment was spot on!
The music is just awesome and without a word of Dialogue I think everything about this ending is great as everything for everyone all works out.

The first time I watched it, I really didn't care for it. I went to wash the dishes, and then it all hit me about 15 minutes later, and I laughed my ass off. I had to go back and watch it again.
I really fucking love this song. It makes me feel good, like part of a community working in sync like cogs in a clock. Makes me think of confidence in the sense of "don't care about what others think of you, just be your authentic self" and go on a heroes journey type beat. And to go out in the world and experience things and do things without worry or fear of what others think as well as to take a leap of faith on the things you desire to do. Its like a song of liberation and courage and exploration.
Its like youve crawled through mud and shit your whole life while everyone laughs at you and tells you youre a loser or youll fail or your weird. And you finally succeed at your goal and everyone who called you names and laughed are now seeing you for the unique and special person you always tried to be.
And all this comes from a movie about an autistic kid, his weird older brother, delusional uncle, and a Llama.

I've been listening to Penguin Café Orchestra, off and on, for somewhere in excess of 38 years. I saw them at Glastonbury in, I think, 1994 and almost nuked the tune Perpetuum Mobile when I recognised it from the solitary first note and whooped like an idiot in between that and the second note. Making PCO first among equals Simon Jeffes (RIP) smile in surprise as a result was a joy in itself. Anyway there was a time when a number of PCO pieces were almost ubiquitous wherever a soundtrack on TV, at least, called for a track capturing a feeling of--I'm not sure what to call it--a kind of gentle exuberance, or just non-crazy joy. In particular, this song, Perpetuum Mobile, and Telephone and Rubber Band saw sooo much service, in so many films and TV shows. I don't think I've ever seen or heard any of them used to more brilliant effect than in this sequence. The way the music opens up as, first, Pedro senses that his world may be opening up too, and the way the music then accompanies a kind of resolution for every major character until the final swingball scene and brings pretty much the whole ending together--absolutely brilliant.
This song is in another movie called Malcolm, made back in the 90s in Australia, it’s a really great movie, bit offbeat but with the same kinda magic

Napoleon Dynamite was always a favorite movie of mine, and I especially liked the ending. About a year ago I got really into Penguin Cafe Orchestra, and when I heard this song playing in a Penguin Cafe Orchestra playlist I immediately thought to myself “THAT’S THE SONG FROM NAPOLEON DYNAMITE!”

Thanks for the upload. God knows how I got this recommendation. On a day when I needed something like this. I was supposed to speak about something today and I blew it really bad (maybe in my mind). Lack of prep maybe or because of all the negativity because of covid. I ended up saying things that maybe I shouldn't have said. Nothing wrong or insulting but things out of context. The big takeaway of this movie for me is don't be afraid to express yourself. Feeling much better now honestly.

There’s a lot more heart and meaning to this awkward comedy than at first glance
My first viewing of Napoleon Dynamite was a free ticket at the Seattle International Film Festival, and like many of you, I wasn't sure at first what to make of this quirky tale and unknown movie at the time. Then I got an extra ticket b4 the movie was even released to theaters nationwide. Saw it that 2nd time and totally fell in love with it! I get the message too, just be yourself and let your light shine, no matter what people may think or say, who cares! Be the one and only original & genuine YOU. God made only one YOU, and be glad, love who you are, for there is no other YOU on this whole wide wonderful world of almost 8 billion (and climbing fast!) people!
Btw, I took a trip 2 years ago to the Craters of the Moon N.M. in southern Idaho, and made sure on my journey to stop by Preston, ID, where Napoleon was filmed and swung by the high school after checking out the little town. Jon Heder is amazing; whar a comedic genius! He helped the writer write this screenplay I understand!
