  • Birdbaths have been busy places during fall migration this year. With only a day or two without rain, water sources can become a major source of bird activity. The two species of Catharus (genus) thrushes in this video are not feeder birds although I would not be surprised to learn that either of them is on the Bark Butter list. Yet, a good water source can attract species like this - species that would be novel to most back yard bird enthusiasts.
This particular bath (thanks, C. Roe!) is very active. Its dimensions are perfect for small birds and the reservoir is slightly off level so that there are varying water depths. The bath is located under dense canopy and near shrubs with multiple perching spots. The owner refreshes the water almost daily or as often as needed and there is now a dripper there. Note: The dripper is used at a slow drip rate and only turned on during observation times so that water waste is minimal. There are more videos from this same bath to come very soon. Stay tuned!
