    I'm not even playing 5th edition but having the characters from the cartoon has me more hyped for actual D&D than I have been in a long time. I doubt I move from OSR to 5th (5.5?) but I am more likely to buy it now than I ever was before.

    I agree that the cartoon villains are an odd choice for the DMG cover, and I'm going to just call it 5.5 until everyone around me does the same, because it's the moniker that fits. Good points all around, but especially that LAST one. It's almost like there are no "sides" to a hobby you do for fun. Don't tell the internet.

    Maybe giving up on games workshop makes me not ready to give up on wotc d&d yet.... i was treated much worse by games workshop then wotc d&d has EVER treated me

    • @direden
      @direden  5 місяців тому

      Right!? Games Workshop is far worse than WotC. If I compare the two... it's much easier to tolerate WotC.

    I kinda like the cover. Yeah it's mostly nostalgia, but that's not bad. My biggest concern is what wizards and Hasbro is doing behind the scenes.

    Great video. I agree WotC is not doing themselves any favors by calling it 5E rather than 5.5. It will cause confusion and irritation among their base but frankly, they have made so many poor choices over the last few years that I'm also not surprised. I fall firmly into the "I'm not going to play D&D" camp anymore, but not for the usual reasons about the various WotC debacles. I just genuinely don't personally enjoy the direction the game mechanics keeps trending - higher power curve for player characters, ever increasing number of Feats, etc. That doesn't make WotC wrong. There are plenty of people who love the 5E system and I hope they enjoy whatever WotC cooks up. For myself, the OSR style of gameplay brings back the feel of my 80s D&D experiences. We switched to Shadowdark last year during the kickstarter and never looked back. Easier to teach new players. Simple to run. Fun to play. Focus on the story and adventure rather than all the numbers on the character sheet. Anyway, great overview of what's to come in One D&D / 5E 2024 or whatever they decide to call it. Thanks for your balanced and reasonable coverage.

      Thanks so much... for noticing. I try hard to provide balance and reasonable coverage... but that's not the norm these days. There's so much sensationalism and outrage... but that's not my style.

      @@direden That is precisely the "problem" with the attention economy. Only the outrageous and obnoxious seems to get noticed and amplified. We need more down to earth perspectives on stuff. Kudos and best of luck with your channel.

    It is still 5th edition though. There are minor tweaks and clarifications. The books are better formatted and there is more content (feats, spells, subclasses, etc) but that's not different than other player content expansion books.
    The reason they are so adamant about not calling it a new edition is so players will not be mad about all the adventure books we've bought. 2024 should still work fine with those adventures, if they called it a new edition everyone would be mad about losing the function of adventures, even the newest ones. 2024 isn't going to play different enough to break them, so they say they're the same edition.
    It isn't like when the game shifted from 2nd to 3rd (remember negative AC and THAC0?) or from 3.5 to 4th (pen and paper MMORPG) or 4th to 5th (had to be new, nobody was playing 4th, lol)
    2014 to 2024 isn't going to be nearly as different- the subclasses all start at level 3 (most already do) and there has been a little bit of balancing and clarifying of the rules and a reorganizing of the books. Not a new edition!

    • @direden
      @direden  5 місяців тому

      Right. It's not like the shift from 2nd to 3rd. It's not like the shift from 3.5 to 4th. But it IS like the shift from 3rd to 3.5.
      So, it's appropriate to call it 5.5.
      The adventures from 3rd still worked with 3.5 🤷🏽‍♂️

    I agree it should be called 5.5!
    WotC lost me a year or so ago. Ya WotC will probably screw up Greyhawk. Just my thoughts though.
    Right I will probably cover WotC stuff but play what you like. I still play 3.5 and 5e and will continue to.

    @2:00 LOL! Where is the lady with the Invisibility Cloak? Eh?
    @4:00 There are 5.5 Lights!!! Maybe that reference is too old but that's when I refuse to be gas-lit.
    RANT: They are being stubborn on this issue of - we can't let the consumer win - because we already lost the OGL issue. Here's the part that really bothers me. This is a prestige job. So many people would love that job - even if it paid poorly - which we know it doesn't. But they do it poorly! How do these people still have their jobs at the high end of Hasbro? They must be related to someone.

    I'm kinda baffled in general about WotC leaning so hard into the cartoon nostalgia. Have you seen it lately? It's super problematic (like a lot of 80s stuff, but yanno)

    • @direden
      @direden  5 місяців тому +1

      I've watched a few episodes recently with my 5 year old. He bounced off it. The only way I can make sense of WotC... remind myself that it's a company with multiple people trying to get promoted. Each one trying to deliver the next winning idea.

    FFS if you get a tune up and an oil change is your 2000 sedan a NEW CAR?/ NO!! when Baldurs Gate 3 gets an update does everyone call it Baldurs Gate 4??? a NEW EDITION implies there are MAJOR change to the way the game is played.. after reading all UA playtesting, this is all just rebalancing and, tweeks and clarifications.. its still 5e. Just polished up and given a shine..

    • @sabotooth
      @sabotooth 5 місяців тому

    • @direden
      @direden  5 місяців тому

      It's just as many tweeks, clarifications, and rebalancing as the change from 3rd to 3.5.
      So again, 5.5 is an appropriate label.

    While I appreciate the new covers, it's still the same garbage company that ruined the game and is why after 43 years of D&D I quit and switched to a better system....Pathfinder. Pathfinder's mechanics and licensing make it far superior but both companies drown their product in wokeness garbage.
