As an evil DM, I would *love* to tell my party at the end of a campaign that the crate of "empty bottles" they passed up several sessions ago were potions of invisibility.

Wouldn't work on most of the people I play with. Had a guy that spent most of two sessions (over 5 hours IRL) try to figure out how to take the huge automated construct (think rumba) even after being told by the DM that it wasn't possible... TWICE.
Make sure you have mimics appear to be a potion of healing, until they are drank.
@@JJV7243 why would I do that. Just making the potions in the dungeon potions of poison. They look just like and taste like healing potions
But it deals 3d6 poison damage and with every successful DC13 con save the damage is reduced by 1d6 until it reaches zero so 3 successful saves.
Maybe describe the container differently than the usual potions so when they use it you can plan accordingly and deal 3d6+ whatever they thought they healed.

One big criticism of 2014's DMG was how it starts from the big and intimidating scope of worlds and campaign settings when most campaign settings start as a simply conceived tavern sufficient only for the first session.

Of the three new core books, this is the one I've been looking forward to the most and the preview did not disappoint. Hoping that the first part of the "basics" chapters goes into more detail about structuring a session zero.

I'm with you. I'm the DM for our family and I found the 2014 DMG to be too much of an encylopedia and not enough of a guide. I'm hoping that even though I've been the DM for a little over a year now, I will learn a lot.

We have plenty of resources printed over the decades that covers it.
I love the idea of the Lore Glossary. As someone who has played since 2E, all that knowledge is stuffed inside my head. But since 5E's explosion, its almost like a system shock when you play with someone who 5E is their first edition of D&D and they don't know why its amazing to find a suit of adamantine plate, or stumble upon Baba Yaga's chicken hut.
I hope that lore glossary is good because I'm one of those 5e new guys and I know nothing about the actual lore of the game but would love to actually know it.

The order of how chapters are arranged now sounds like exactly what I wanted to see. Especially pushing the setting and multiverse back a bit - front-loading that in 2014 I felt was not the best choice, as a new DM might be left feeling they had to build some expansive world before they learned all the nitty-gritty of DMing. Starting with the DM's duties and then giving no-strings-attached sample adventures will ease people into the role better and might lead to less rigid DMing and more confidence in general. Glad to see Greyhawk back too and as someone who also watched the cartoon in my formative years (and also the owner of the miniatures featuring much of the cast), I'm excited to see the references to the series too (loved the art in the 2024 PHB with the gang).
Honestly I love the setting coming in the book. It was my biggest handicap as a new DM! I'm hoping now that it'll help me be able to organize my notes by having something to emulate.
Greyhawk is an awesome setting.

i had no idea about bastions, wasn’t up on any unearthed arcana, and for the past couple weeks have been coming up with a campaign where the main goal of it is the party starting and building up their own guild, so this Bastion feature is incredible!!!!! what perfect timing!!!!

Weirdly most excited about the lore glossary. I know a few names of big characters and locations, but know nothing about specifics. Nothing more annoying than doing some campaign prep and trying to flesh things out for players only to find I had some key specifics waaay wrong. 😅 Having a quick reference on that stuff will be a help!
Volos Guide to Monsters. It’s a gem. Like Mordenien’s, but with lore.
Maybe yall FINALLY decided to make some unique halberds, glaives, hand crossbows, etc!!! Many weapons haven’t had unique legendary versions for the last TEN years!!! Always longsword this and longsword that!
You know that you can replace the longsword adjective and throw in the appropriate base weapon damage and now it's not just long swords.
That said there is a reason for stuff like that. I personally want to see some official bows and Crossbows.

um there's no rule that says you can't make those. Just like a DM doesn't have to make a hobgoblin a Fey, they could be a Fiend, dragon, halfling that is immune to all damage, breaths poison gas and has the lucky feat. That's what a DMG is used for.

Long sword is the most commonly used weapon because it is the biggest one handed damage die weapon. That way they can use a shield.
On the occasion I do play a martial class I prefer the pole arm with a long bow for range.
Why are all the comments glazing this?It's a half baked campaign labelled as 'DMG'.
Basically they're doing nothing to encourage or support homebrew but instead encouraging dependance on pre-written modules and premade maps.
The whole 'sandbox' is just bs for, here's an underdeveloped campaign and most of the lore is a bunch of other stuff to fill pages.
All they needed to do is overhaul the CR system and make it easier to use, and provide clear scaling for monsters, traps, travel, spells and items.
It's very much giving 'we're not really going to teach you how to do anything so you still rely on us to provide most of your content'.
I guess it means when i launch my Patreon it'll do better than i anticipated.
Here's a DM and art question: When will there be an official world map of official locations made by Wizards of the Coast? Then, potentially, official city maps you have had for a long time? It would be great to have these things readily available and find ones that are actually readable.
On one hand, I like that they're adding a Greyhawk setting into the book. That's really neat. On the other, I was hoping that just like in 2014 DMG, they would also add some "evil" subclass (Oathbreaker paladin, Death cleric, or perhaps Necromancer wizard).

I hope there’s clarity on the little things dms encounter that aren’t accounted for in the players handbook. Vehicles like chariots are present with a price, but there are no explanations about how to implement them on the dm side in combat or otherwise. That sort of little detail is what I’d like to see addressed

I feel like these people like teasing fans, with useless stuff. I don't care about the new potion arts. I don't care about new campaign settings, or freaking bastions for God's sake. I care about rule updates. I care about epic levels setting. I care about deity and spells (that are possibly not broken, such as the updated "sleep" spell).
I'm such a nerd. I am most excited about the tracking sheets! I literally cannot wait to fill out paperwork about my setting and games 😂 The binder grows!!!

I assume the rule is the same as it was in the playtest - and the same as the rule in the 2024 PHB on using an older background instead of a new one
@@SortKaffe yeah, probably the same, but there are tons of people complaining that backgrounds are not customizable in the PHB, so this would finally answer their complaints
@@eliascabbio7598it definitely is a DMG facing thing and shouldn't be a player made decision. I'm glad they are putting it in the DMG. Players are too demanding
@@eliascabbio7598the big issue is that with custom background being in the DMG it hurts things like AL where they specifically have to allow you to use it. If it's in the PHB AL can't do anything without making a big issue out of it.
@@byronkooper I don’t disagree. But as a forever DM, only sixteen combinations of origin feats and proficiencies was a terrible call without a custom option. Especially since a few backgrounds are pretty awful. (Linked to bad feats, like Crafter.)

dont worry, learn dnd first, then, as you get more confident you'll start looking up all the other crazy ttrpgs out there (Chronicles of Darkness, LANCER, etc) and realize just how much fun stuff there is to learn

This will be incredibly useful. I stopped my campaign because it took way to much prep time along other factors. But mainly time and this sounds like a useful time saver.
I love the bastion idea. Unfortunately I see most players have a hard enough time just keeping track of their own resources, features and XP 😂

So excited for the new DMG! I've been slowly encouraging a few of my players to think about DMing and this new approach and layout sounds like a fantastic way for them to begin immersing themselves. I especially like the idea proto-DMing experiences with Basions!

Trollskull Manor in Tyranny is a great example of what inserting bastions into a campaign can be like, take or leave it.
Trollskull Manor features in Waterdeep: Dragon Heist. But yes, I too will be looking over the Bastion rules, to see what might be leveraged for that as it's not well covered in the adventure book as written.

I thought Blackmoor by David Arneson was the first D&D setting. Hmm, I guess that was technically a Chainmail Fantasy setting first, and Gygax's Greyhawk made it into D&D first.
Looks like I need to find all of the campaign books I already own for the Greyhawk setting. 😁

Okay they make the Bastion part feel really exiting and Im kinda hyped for that bit of the book now.
I got my first 1st Ed ADnD DMG from Gary Gygax, at the Dungeon, in Geneva, Ws, signed by him. I studied that book like I was getting a Phd on it. The 2014 was a major disappointment. I liked how Gary included dungeon creating tool, and even digging data for different races. I got none of that with the 2014 DMG and felt like i got screwed.
The 2014 DMG felt like it was a supplement for modules, whereas 1st Ed DMG felt like it was good for creating home brew.
I started D&D in 1977 with 1st ed. I have bought every core book (and a lot of supporting books) from 1st ed to PHB 2024. Editions have at times gone sideways and backwards and also have improved over time. I'm just started reading 24's PHB and until tested; I can't give an opinion. Looking forward to seeing the DM manual and running a campaign.
I like the idea that the lore glossary could represent what the PCs know about a name of a thing and the DM is free to expand on that brief overview in whatever way they want. Like a prompt or a spring board.
Still putting my idea out of making a book of JAKE RAINES GUIDE TO NPCS(EVERYONE) where it goes through almsot every npc you can in the multiverse
I enjoy RP as both player and DM. As DM, I struggle with detail and combat encounter options, so I'm excited for this book.
I wasnt super impressed by the new PHB but this one seems like it'll be a huge improvement over the 2014 DMG, as a DM I did feel like the original DMG had a lot of macro information (the multiversal cosmology, how to make campaigns etc.) but not a whole bunch on how to run a smaller adventure. This seems to be able to kickstart a DMs path much easier

I actually have and have read the original World of Greyhawk folio and I am amazed we will now get an update to that!
I play D&D 5e currently. Not sure yet I want to switch to the new rules. I will look at the free basic rules first. Although the mini-adventures in the new DMG sound interesting. Will there be a new Starter Set for 2024 rules?
I do like the sample campaign setting is Greyhawk. I could use that to run classic adventures converted to 5e like Yawning Portal, Saltmarsh and Infinite Staircase quests.
I am noticing that some of the characters depicted in the Dungeon Master´s Guide art are the same ones provided as examples for classes and subclasses in the Player´s Handbook.

@@maxspecs Yeah on the cover of the 24 PH is Strongheart I just realized. Those characters were dreamed up to be in the cartoon and sell action figures and then never really got used after that that much, so I'm a fan of reclaiming them into the lore. LIke Warduke is super cool. And I love the backstory the Paizo guys gave him in Greyhawk during 3.5E. So I hope that continues more.

50th anniv. of D&D and big discussion about Greyhawk, but no mention that it was Gary Gygax's home campaign and the those big names were actually his players.

Will the DMG include updated deity domain charts for the worlds of the Multiverse and real world mythological pantheons? That was a sore point for me in the new PHB, that clerics had to pick a domain but chit no examples of deities nor guidance
Probably just Greyhawk deities - the Forgotten Realms has its own book coming out next year. For now there are amazing Wikis for other settings you can use if not playing in Greyhawk.
@@ASMRipzHonestly? I'm cool with that. FR was the de facto setting for 3ed, 4ed, and even 5ed. People are way more familiar with not Gandalf and dark Legolas with scimitars than they are with the circle of eight or the scarlet brotherhood.
@@mappybc6097 Actually Greyhawk was the default setting for the 3e core books, and 4e had its own (Nentir Vale) but FR certainly had the most addons - I own them all. There is also not nearly as much established lore for Greyhawk as there is for FR (the FR wiki has close to 56,000 pages to Greyhawk's less than 5K) so it's much easier to fit in the DMG. It's a more malleable setting for a DM to imprint on, whereas FR is better for those who want the detail and lore already available to play with. Both are great :)

I hope we have a few optional rules for customizing the experience. Especially, making the game harder and with higher stakes.
I’m very interested in the lore glossary. I’m pretty new to DnD all things considered, only having played it since college. The new Wish spell references the Lady of Pain, but I have no idea who that is or what the significance there is. I love hearing old stories and knowing some generalities about these characters and events would be very interesting to me.
Will all the maps from the adventures be immediately available digitally and in the Maps tool?

For those tracker sheets, they should make some Microsoft Word templates for these so people can fill these out electronically. Nice for people like to work and store things digitally instead of keeping more paper laying around.

I was hoping for a chapter on optional rules (such as Bastions) to make the game a bit more modular. Maybe chapter 3 will cover it but I feel like if it was there it would be a talking point. No mention on custom backgrounds which I was expecting since they're so uniform now.

I can’t help but wonder if they mention Gord in the DMG? He is after all not only the best thief ever!! But he was also my introduction to the Greyhawk and its lore. Some of the best books I read as a kid.
Are there 2024 iterations of Optional Rules? (injuries, rest variants, More Difficult Magic Item identification, Encumbrance etc)

what i want to see is the option of taking the Disruption effect from the Mace of Disruption and apply it to another weapon. I had already made a Vampire Killer ala Castlevania by applying it to a whip!

I think that information can be found in the new Monster Manual rather than in this particular book.
Love the idea of a Bastion. My players are all about to hit 5th Level in the next couple of sessions. I hope they go crazy with it. I need to imagine our Halfling’s Bastion in the woodland realm.
yup Bastions is a really neat idea. I mean theoretically we always had this, the idea of strongholds, etc. but codifying it this way is pretty neat.
@@provisionalhypothesis I already floated it as an option and our Arcane Trickster Rogue is ready to build his evil tower.
Why can't you bring back 3rd edition build your own weapon/armor/shield section? That was so cool. Add a little section about evolving magic item explaining how I can grab my +1 weapon, bring it to the arcane smith and upgrade it to a flametongue+1 and 3 level later, upgrade it to a +2 flametongue, then if I find a arne smith of higher level then the basic one in town, he'll be able to add dancing to my +2 flametongue weapon etc...
Pathfinder1e Ultimate Campaign has Bastion rules, and are amazing. I hope this bastion rules, are at least as good as Paizian system.
If not, you can, of course, mix both, compare, and pick the best and easier to try

Are there no DMG exclusive subclasses like the Oathbreaker? I was hoping the Necromancer, Shadow Sorcerer and other more evil themed subclasses would be in there
I was kinda hoping for the death domain. In terms of Cleric Domains for Deities, I hope they don't lazily say "you figure it out".

DM does not subclasses, you can custom-make whatever Monster you like, monsters use different rules than PC's (ever since 4e, and 5e is the same)

Are there going to be rules for vehicles in the DM or do we just stick with the Ghosts of Saltmarsh ship rules and Decent into Averus for land. Also are there going to be rules for mass combat or sieges? What happens when your Bastion is attacked?
I hope the monsters are more powerful so I don t have to use the DMG every time I need something for the higher level without dying în 1-2 rounds. It would be nice if they also added more lore about the elemental planes and every other special material and monster.

Okay, in the magic items they said that suggested pricing is listed but also mentioned that you could ‘divine’ pricing in the 2014 book. Can someone point at a section or page for me because besides a pricing guide in Ghosts of Saltmarsh for Captain Xendros on the Quartermaster of Iuz, I’m just blind to where this may be.

This is my BIGGEST issue with the current DMG and it doesn't sound like it will be addressed in the new one. How much does each item cost? Give me a base price, not a range. Because I had to create a spreadsheet for the magic items to remain consistent for my players. The only thing in the 5e DMG is that Item Rarity table on page 135 that is nearly worthless.
@@erikc5797 Seriously, it seems like they just want us to come up with pricing. I know there's a lot of community lists but an official one would be nice. Granted, who knows if it would be fair or balanced.
Another thought would be that most magic items are officially thought of as so rare that they wouldn't show up in general stores but only in things like auctions for the rich and powerful.
With how many famous streamers have accessible stores and merchants most players now expect to have a store in the major cities that provide magic items. For better or worse there are expectations that are set by these famous campaigns.
I'm sure we'll be getting half elves and half orcs entries in the glossary, right?😂

I would love to implement bastions in a long campaing, and then do an "innocent" one -shot with the players invading their own bastion without even knowing.
Most of this sounds great but their logic for expanding how some magic items work including ammunition is the same logic they used to exclude Artificer in the PHB. "It doesn't fit in every campaign". Should've been included here if that is the case. Would have also loved expansions on the "evil" subclasses for cleric and paladin in the 2014 DMG to include similar options for every class this time.
Leaving the Greyhawk setting purposefully vague, that sucks. We want detail. People need detail. It's been long enough, people need to know everything.
Hopefully they include more world building tools, fix or get rid of the challenge rating and seriously upgrade the monsters.
I may get it to compare it to kobold Press TOV Dungeon Master's Guidebook. I am optimistic and could see myself using both

Honestly, I'm actually getting kinda hyped about this. The 2024 PHB actually lived up to what they talked about, and that's the first time I've felt like that happened since...okay, I don't remember that happening before with a new core book, and I started with 2e. Sounds like they understand why the old DMG was a disappointment and the little clips of the new one look so much better.
Bastions are a great idea, but I'm not 100% sold on the fact that most of the new DMG is going to be setting-specific content and premade adventures. I think those belong in starter sets or separate setting guide books. Though it's cool that its more friendly towards new DMs. I personally hope for more tools for homebrewing items and monsters

we just ended the Curse of Strahd and are off to a new homebrew Quest. We already talked about going back and building a base in Barovia :D And the timing of the new book would fit perfect. But the germadn translation is far to slow. Please try to increase the translation speed. I know it is more difficult than translating a Novel but it is hard to wait
I hope we get some new enchanted flutes. There are none. We got pipes, drums, lutes, lyres, viols etc but no flutes.
I love the inclusion of the D&D cartoon stuff, but I really wish you had included the setting they were in, Mystara
they weren't in Mystara...they weren't in any published D&D setting, the cartoon was it's own thing
@@cam1772fsu there were books at the time that put them in Mystara, I think it was one of the magazines, but they were not in any primary book and the setting was never mentioned in the cartoon
