- We'll learn about RNAV approaches and then fly one using the new G1000 NXi in Microsoft Flight Simulator. In this video, I do an IFR flight from KALB to KMHT using VNAV with autopilot, and then fly an RNAV LPV approach. This video shows the first version of the G1000 NXi (verison 0.1.0) by the Working Title team, which is available in the in-game MSFS Marketplace.
Since the NXi is changing rapidly, some things in this video may be different today, so check out my NXi Update videos in this playlist: • MSFS: G1000 NXi Update...

Just a note from a real pilot to Simmers. You don't always need to use full flap. Flaps main function aside from slowing the plane is to increase the steepness of an approach and to lower the stall speed. So on a long runway, you'd rarely use more than one stage of flap, but on a short runway, you'd use full flap. This is Small simple and complex GA Planes I'm talking about. Commercial aircraft have their own set of rules.
I use full flaps because I always come in hot af lol. Never fails. When I try to come in at the correct speed I stall because I'm a noob lol.
I always use 20 degrees (don’t want a stall spin) unless I’m dealing with a crazy crosswind (Florida pilot) but yeah I always see the simulator pilots using full flaps.
I go full flaps the whole flight just to challenge myself
@@livingmodern i also go gear down aswell, it’s just for some of us🤷♂️
My cirrus is full flaps for landing, by the book
Kip, Can’t emphasize enough how much I loved they way you have explained Rnav and LPV. A BIG Thank You!
The flight sim community thanks you.
My sentiments exactly.
Me too!
Finally I understand the differences between RNAV/VNAV and ILS. Professional tutorial. Thanks for this!
This is an EXCELLENT tutorial. I love the way that you explain every acronym and don't quickly make adjustments that you don't explain (many other FS UA-camrs are guilty of that). You give exactly the level of detail that I want. But even a Persian carpet must contain a fault, to signal that it does not attempt to attain perfection, which can only exist in the mind of God, and in this case the fault is that you consistently mispronounce CUTSA as CUSTA. You have a subscriber for life, or at least until I lose interest in flight simming.
Thank you, and thanks for the laugh 😂
Agreed this felt like being with a really good flight/simulator instructor. I really learned a lot. However, the mispronunciation isn’t going to get you a flight violation lol. The descending below 2000’ and landing without a clearance will 😂. Thank You for the G1000 Nxi Gen Fam!
@@keithhoss4990 and without landing lights ;)
I found this vid from a link shared on the WT NXi Discord - Excellent tutorial! And you did a great job explaining the difference between VNAV and GP and when one transitions to the other.
Best description of how to fly RNAV LPV that I've seen.
Good stuff as ever, no fluff just relevant information.
Great video on the new G1000. Just what I needed! Thanks for your clear and detailed descriptions and instructions. Can't wait to use this new knowledge!
Thanks so much for this this really cleared things up on RNAV and using Vertical guidance .
Thank you Kip. I always learn a lot viewing your tutorials. You are a great teacher.
Great Tutorial, and this has helped me so much to understand not just how RNAV works, but how to make a succesful approach, and to understand the approach charts. I have actually bookmarked this video for future reference.
I have watched is three or four times in the last few months. It has proved incredibly helpful for me because I knew nothing about RNAV approaches or how to fly them. This is among the most useful videos I have encountered. Excellent work!
Thank you clear and to the point. Extremely useful. Jens
I really appreciate your tutorials. They are always super explanatory and easy to follow. Thanks for the effort.
I’ve learned so much about the acronyms I’ve been trying to decipher on these charts in just the first few mins of watching your video - thanks!
Thank you so much for your videos. Just did my first IFR flight plan in the Cirrus with VNAV (including modifying altitudes) and full RNAV LPV approach into Monterey, CA airport in current terrible weather conditions, including the appropriate offshore hold. Went just about perfect aside from my FAR-from-perfect landing in a 14 knot crosswind! Couldn’t have done it without your videos.
UPDATE: Since this video was posted (showing the NXi way back on version 0.1.0), the procedure for arming VNAV changed slightly. You must first change your selected altitude first, THEN press the VNV button to enable VNAV. At 13:04 in this video, I was able to do it the opposite way, but that is no longer the case. I explain this change here in the NXi 0.6.0 video: ua-cam.com/video/Zh8VjCeTsm8/v-deo.html
When you initially set up VNAV, the altitudes are shown in white on the flight plan view. In the original G1000, those white altitudes need to be switched from white to large blue font for the VNAV to use them. If the altitudes are left in white, that indicates that it is an informational only atitude. Everything else looked good.
This has the best explanation of different approaches I’ve found so far
I'm just getting back into simming after a 15 year hiatus, and as such I've had much to learn about the G1000. This is as concise a tutorial as I've seen, very well presented and explained. You can only fly around your house so many times before you want more, and learning this stuff has been a real brain-teaser--but has added so much more to my simming experience. Thanks so much.
Another great video - much appreciated. As a VFR student pilot, this is complicated stuff and you explain everything very well. Will refer to this often.
I am not a Pilot in rea life but a casual Flight Simulator gamer and I truly love your videos! Very helpful and fun to watch!
Only started playing flight sim on Series X four days ago. This video was useful as my first step towards navigating and managing flight from the cabin.
Your video is the first decent RNAV approach using MSFS 2020 I've seen on UA-cam. Major props to you, Kip. My favorite part starts at 22:05 LPV approach, where you press the APR button to get the VPTH GP indication, capturing the glide path, thank you for explaining this.
Thanks Scott! The NXi is amazing. Can’t wait for all those inop buttons to start lighting up with each update 😆
The best RNAV tutorial I have found so far. Thanks!
Thanks for the video! You are the first person to explain the whole process so a beginner can understand. Most videos just go click, click, click and go.
Another masterclass! Got tired of airliners and have gone back to GA. Incredible how much airliners spoil you.
Excellent tutorial. Clicked for RNAV and learned so much more. 👍🏼👍🏼
This one is the first video I watch from your channel, and I must say I’m glad to have found such as plain, clear and detailed explanation I was looking for. I think I’m gonna search for more interesting content and, eventually, I’ll be subscribing to your channel soon. So far so good! Thank you!
No matter which video of him i pick, i always learn sth new. This guys truly knows his stuff and sometimes it feels like he actually INVENTED modern aviation himself ;-)
Hey Kip, the way you explain things is absolutely awesome. Thank you so much!
Excellent video. Learned a lot. Thank you. Now I can't wait for the WT G3000/5000 to catch up to the 1000.
KMHT is my local airport, and I monitor the air traffic daily. I have been watching all of the rw 06 operations now that 17/35 is closed for resurfacing. This is a great video!
Thanks a lot. Very helpful. As Matthew said: no fluff just relevant information.
Absolutely perfect explanation once again, thank you very much. Going to try this out right now! :)
Kip you are an excellent instructor. Following you on this LPV flight plan is a very pleasant and well informed educational journey. I am a very rusty IFR rated pilot trying to get myself back to proficiency level and following your teaching method is simply confidence building and providing me a feeling that, thanks to you, I will get back to proficiency. You just can’ t buy that feeling. Thank you for your time and energy.
Very well done. GREAT resolution and easy to understand. Keep'em coming! !! !!!
Very good tutorial! I know I'll refer to this video again. I saw the GPS available for download but wasn't sure about it. This video makes me feel more confident so I will get it. Thanks for the tutorial. Very thorough and concise!
I think it's pretty amazing for what's essentially a beta release. Knowing that the NXi will become the future default G1000 in the sim (without having to install it via the marketplace) makes me want to watch it every step of the way.
Beautiful rainbow at 10 o'clock, 22:30. Nice tutorial, thanks.
Perfect audio/video quality, perfect explanation and pronunciation so I could easily understand everything you said! You're my hero man!:D Btw, I had no idea that you can do this in G1000...I've been mostly flying big jets in the past (FS9/FSX - Level-D, PMDG, WILCO...memories) and after a very long brake I went back to simming. This time MSFS/GA/VR:). It's like a jump into the future. Love it!
Easily one of the best tutorials, thanks
Very detailed information and I like your verbal delivery style, very easy to follow along. Thank you.
That was extremely helpfull and informative! Keep these kind of turorials coming!
Another outstanding video tutorial. So well done and easy to follow along, you really do make a fantastic online teacher. It's so good to see so many people getting into the hobby of flight simulation after MS Flight Simulator was released a couple years ago. Keep up the great work. :)
Kip on the Ground: Kip, this is an excellent video by you. I commend you on your very clear instructions, slow speech just right so we can follow and understand as we are being taught. You are very precise and methodical with no nonsense mentality which is the quality of a true teacher. I see so many videos of those who are too rapid in all they do and leads to a lot of waisted time and effort on their part. You cover all the important steps to help and assist the student to become successful. I definitely liked, subscribed and hit the bell. Thank you so much. Greatly appreciated.
Just downloaded the NXI so ty so much for this tutorial!
You legend, hoped that you would do this :D
Awesome, well produced tutorial video! Thanks!
Great tutorial. Thank you Kip. Precise and concise.
Very well done Kip. Excellent descriptions of VNAV and a GPS approach with LPV minima. Subbed, irl CL650 Captain.
This is a REALLY good tutorial. Thank you!
Vraiment très instructif. Merci Kip. Keep on going!
Allowing for small changes through updated software I still come back to these quality videos to understand what I am doing wrong. Like looking up a text book, thanks again Kip.
Like I know you don't need to hear anymore comments but I have to give my compliments as well. Beyond flying. You should be a gold standard that other youtubers study to learn how to put together a tutorial over anything. Period. Subbed and love your content.
Excellent, informative tutorial! Thanks
Thanks for the video! Was waiting for your coverage of the NXI.
RNAV has always been easier for me, but I'm trying to get better at the others so I can comfortably land anywhere.
Thank you brother this is probably the best explaination of the system i have seen yet :) followed along
Awesome video pal! Very good
U r the inborn teacher...hats off for your effort...
Thank you Kip. I always learn a lot viewing your tutorials easy to follow Thanks for the effort.
Thank you for giving us this very useful clip. I spent a few hours trying to follow your route with the exact same equipment today, with G1000 Nxi at the latest version (currently V0.50). At first, pressing the VNV button didn't activate the VPTH. First, I needed to lower the selected altitude (2000ft in this case) to enable the VNV button. Just a tip for others who might experience the same problem.
Yep, this was a change made in version 0.5.0 I believe, so that is the new way :-) Apparently that's how the real NXi works!
Thanx your comment helped me skip the head scratching stage lol.
You put a lot of effort into this video, thank you
Excellent tutorial! The best I have seen. Thank you!
Anything bar ILS confuses the crap out of me. You helped alot.
First class! Thanks for sharing.
Wow :) you are really great at explaining and teaching. also technically great video! This is first time i see your videos, you bet I will watch more :) Thank you so much Kip!
Very well explained and much appreciated.
Again, great video and perfect balance of "nerd explanation" along with pratical simulator fun.
Awesome, thank you!!
You rock! Exactly the thoroughness I was looking for. Subscribing.
Another great tutorial, thank you!
Fantastic tutorial. Thanks so much for these.
Hi thanks for a great video its helps a great deal , i love FS and never really understood the G1000 just picking up little tips as i go , but your really good at making it easier to understand for me its just for fun but i spend hours , love VR makes the world of difference to see all around and not just at a screen, thanks again.
Very, very helpful. Thanks
Many real good informations. Perfect Job. Thanks
Well this has been the second video of yours I've watched. You've no shortage of heartfelt appreciation already, but at the risk of it being redundant, consider this another one. If you're not already an instructor for something, you aught to be.
Already Subbed and, of course, this video is LIKED.
By far the best video. Definitely helped that you used the plane I use all the time. Thanks man
Great video. Professionally made. Thanks.
What an amazing video!
Thank you so much for your support and your kind
Fantastic tutorial, you explained very well, thank you very much.
Brilliant! Thank you.
very well explained. thank you
very good - I jump in the cockpit now and try to repeat this .wish me luck and thanks for this video - keep on sharing these - great help for newbies like me - cheers again
Absolutely excellent! I came here because I missed the glidescope manually coming in on the approach over the waypoints too often. Very annoying. Sometimes they are very close together. Not anymore thanks to vnav. never knew that one before! As a bonus, I learned how to use FLC for climb and IAS (in conjunction with my multi panel). I'm practicing with c208 for cargo and passenger missions. I hardly ever touch the stick now except for TO and Landing. Just like the big guys. Well done sir.
Very good guidance, clear and excellent explanation. I found it very instructive.
Yeah cool, I've always wanted to know this since Flight Simulator 2004. I will practice this in the coming weeks. I'll have to watch the video a few times to really understand it,But thank you very much.
First let me say, great video! I had already figured out a lot of this on my own (being a real world instrument rated private pilot helps), but you filled in a lot of the gaps for me, especially with regards to GPS approaches in general. Unfortunately, I stopped flying before they became a thing, and now my disability probably makes me ineligible for a medical, so I live vicariously through the sim. Not only did I subscribe, I actually bookmarked this video to return to so I can refresh my memory from time to time.
I understand that we can now file NASA reports online, so perhaps we should all update our "After Landing Checklist" to read as follows:
Flaps: UP
Spoilers (if equipped): DOWN
Strobe Lights: OFF
Landing Lights: OFF
Taxi Lights: ON
APU (if equipped): START
NASA Report: FILED
That way, by the time we even reach the ramp we will have covered our own butts from infractions like forgetting to talk to the TWR prior to landing! ;-)
On a more serious note, I have always read that it is a best practice "for passenger comfort" to keep descent rates in unpressurized aircraft to 600 fpm or less. Is this true, or just some old wives tale? And will future updates allow us to specify a descent rate, rather than have that 1,000 fpm used as a default, unchangeable value? Obviously, after the IAF, you gotta do what you gotta do to hit those crossing restrictions, but if a smoother descent is actually more comfortable for the passengers, and if ATC becomes intelligent enough to give more advance notice on expected procedures, real world GA descent rates, and the ability to make a request for a descent if ATC is not on the ball.
None of those things can be done with the current implementation of ATC, for example the descent. In the real world, if I felt like I was being left too high, I would just key the mike and say "CALLSIGN is looking for lower", which would generally be followed up by an approval in the form of "CALLSIGN, descend and maintain X,000 feet", or possibly "CALLSIGN, descend at pilots discretion to and maintain X,000 feet", assuming there were no potential conflicts. The default ATC and even most third party ATC software packages are a long way from being able to handle _that_ request! For that matter, the default ATC doesn't even know how to give actual vectors, or what a SID or STAR is, whereas third party stuff mostly has that figured out. The default has improved a lot since product launch, but it is still stuck in the 90s as far as basic functionality goes.
No voiced usage, despite the fact that MS practically invented it with Cortana. Complete lack of knowledge of standards, like the aforementioned SIDS and STARS, much less altitude or speed restrictions on those procedures, no ability to make more varied requests, like "Say altimeter for CALLSIGN", or "CALLSIGN would like 4,000 feet". It's almost like they didn't even try to improve it from FSX. Personally, I've solved that problem (somewhat) by going with pilot2ATC, but it costs as much as the base level sim, which many simmers would strongly object to, and has it's own set of problems and issues.
The only thing that approaches real world ATC is obviously VATSIM, but I find it to be un- or under-staffed every time I try to use it, so I've given up on it. Not only do I not have the client installed, I'd have to resort to google to figure out where to get it, and I would need instructions on how to use it, that's how long it's been since I even tried. The last time I tried, which admittedly was well over a decade ago because I took a long break from simming, I got a rookie controller whose instructions led to me overrunning the runway at KLAS and essentially putting my 737 down in the desert, several miles outside of town. Hopefully in that amount of time, the training requirements have led to the chances of that happening being practically nil, but if it's not staffed, it's not staffed, and since it's all volunteer, there's nothing anybody can do about that except maybe beg.
I'm off topic, but I would care for your insight as to the 600 fpm "guideline" for unpressurized aircraft, as well as whether or not those "variables" will actually be variable as the progress on the NXi continues.
Kev
Better instruction than real world ground school!
Wow outstanding video, keep them coming
I understand VNAV, Vpath, thank you very much!
Very good content and perfect explanations! I have learned a lot with this video. Going to practice in VR now👍🏾
Excellent video and explanation; well done!
brilliant video Kip.. thanks a lot.
Wow! Fantastic tutorial 👍👍 thanks a million 👍👍
Well, that excellent tutorial has earned you another subscriber. I am a little conflicted as I love flying the Milviz PC-6 and have also been trying to get to grips with the NXi but sadly these two don't (yet?) play nice together. It's incredible how far flight simming has come in the last ten years or so.
New subscriber to your channel and this is fantastic. I mainly fly the FBW A320 but struggle with low and slow GA so this is great for me. Thank you
Great video , want to see more of this...
subscribed - super super helpful - learned so much
Thanks a very informative and clear tutorial. Very useful.
Thank a lot for you tuto, it's awesome 😁
Well done. Subscribed as much for style of presentation as much as content. Benchmark stuff!
