    Just a note from a real pilot to Simmers. You don't always need to use full flap. Flaps main function aside from slowing the plane is to increase the steepness of an approach and to lower the stall speed. So on a long runway, you'd rarely use more than one stage of flap, but on a short runway, you'd use full flap. This is Small simple and complex GA Planes I'm talking about. Commercial aircraft have their own set of rules.

    • @mattalford3932
      @mattalford3932 2 роки тому +14

      I use full flaps because I always come in hot af lol. Never fails. When I try to come in at the correct speed I stall because I'm a noob lol.

    • @scottpilot2
      @scottpilot2 2 роки тому

      I always use 20 degrees (don’t want a stall spin) unless I’m dealing with a crazy crosswind (Florida pilot) but yeah I always see the simulator pilots using full flaps.

    This is an EXCELLENT tutorial. I love the way that you explain every acronym and don't quickly make adjustments that you don't explain (many other FS UA-camrs are guilty of that). You give exactly the level of detail that I want. But even a Persian carpet must contain a fault, to signal that it does not attempt to attain perfection, which can only exist in the mind of God, and in this case the fault is that you consistently mispronounce CUTSA as CUSTA. You have a subscriber for life, or at least until I lose interest in flight simming.

      Agreed this felt like being with a really good flight/simulator instructor. I really learned a lot. However, the mispronunciation isn’t going to get you a flight violation lol. The descending below 2000’ and landing without a clearance will 😂. Thank You for the G1000 Nxi Gen Fam!

    UPDATE: Since this video was posted (showing the NXi way back on version 0.1.0), the procedure for arming VNAV changed slightly. You must first change your selected altitude first, THEN press the VNV button to enable VNAV. At 13:04 in this video, I was able to do it the opposite way, but that is no longer the case. I explain this change here in the NXi 0.6.0 video: ua-cam.com/video/Zh8VjCeTsm8/v-deo.html

    • @robertmac5352
      @robertmac5352 2 роки тому

      When you initially set up VNAV, the altitudes are shown in white on the flight plan view. In the original G1000, those white altitudes need to be switched from white to large blue font for the VNAV to use them. If the altitudes are left in white, that indicates that it is an informational only atitude. Everything else looked good.

    Thank you for giving us this very useful clip. I spent a few hours trying to follow your route with the exact same equipment today, with G1000 Nxi at the latest version (currently V0.50). At first, pressing the VNV button didn't activate the VPTH. First, I needed to lower the selected altitude (2000ft in this case) to enable the VNV button. Just a tip for others who might experience the same problem.

You are very precise and methodical with no nonsense mentality which is the quality of a true teacher. I watched this video several weeks ago and it changed the way I use MSFS 2020 for landing. The way Kip explained RNAV was exceptionally well done. Thanks Kip! I then purchased and downloaded MSFS 2024 with the idea I could use this platform to continue to use the information from this video. I am very disappointed because it can't be done or I can't figured out how it can be accomplished. The fact that I need help is an understatement. Using this video to understand and use RVAV in 2020 has been a big incentive in enjoying that platform. I don't want to loose that enjoyment in 2024. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    Absolutely excellent! I came here because I missed the glidescope manually coming in on the approach over the waypoints too often. Very annoying. Sometimes they are very close together. Not anymore thanks to vnav. never knew that one before! As a bonus, I learned how to use FLC for climb and IAS (in conjunction with my multi panel). I'm practicing with c208 for cargo and passenger missions. I hardly ever touch the stick now except for TO and Landing. Just like the big guys. Well done sir.

    @6:23 - WAAS signal goes from WAAS geostationary satellites to G1000 GPS/WAAS antenna. it’s not necessary to place any equipment at airports to broadcast WAAS signal. KTEX Instrument Approach Procedures do not have LPV and LNAV/VNAV because they do not provide lower minima in comparison to published LP MDA category. (Probably because of the terrain around the airport). Even if you have precise vertical guidance from WAAS you still need to use LP MDA minima.

    First let me say, great video! I had already figured out a lot of this on my own (being a real world instrument rated private pilot helps), but you filled in a lot of the gaps for me, especially with regards to GPS approaches in general. Unfortunately, I stopped flying before they became a thing, and now my disability probably makes me ineligible for a medical, so I live vicariously through the sim. Not only did I subscribe, I actually bookmarked this video to return to so I can refresh my memory from time to time.
    I understand that we can now file NASA reports online, so perhaps we should all update our "After Landing Checklist" to read as follows:
    Flaps: UP
    Spoilers (if equipped): DOWN
    Strobe Lights: OFF
    Landing Lights: OFF
    Taxi Lights: ON
    APU (if equipped): START
    NASA Report: FILED
    That way, by the time we even reach the ramp we will have covered our own butts from infractions like forgetting to talk to the TWR prior to landing! ;-)
    On a more serious note, I have always read that it is a best practice "for passenger comfort" to keep descent rates in unpressurized aircraft to 600 fpm or less. Is this true, or just some old wives tale? And will future updates allow us to specify a descent rate, rather than have that 1,000 fpm used as a default, unchangeable value? Obviously, after the IAF, you gotta do what you gotta do to hit those crossing restrictions, but if a smoother descent is actually more comfortable for the passengers, and if ATC becomes intelligent enough to give more advance notice on expected procedures, real world GA descent rates, and the ability to make a request for a descent if ATC is not on the ball.
    None of those things can be done with the current implementation of ATC, for example the descent. In the real world, if I felt like I was being left too high, I would just key the mike and say "CALLSIGN is looking for lower", which would generally be followed up by an approval in the form of "CALLSIGN, descend and maintain X,000 feet", or possibly "CALLSIGN, descend at pilots discretion to and maintain X,000 feet", assuming there were no potential conflicts. The default ATC and even most third party ATC software packages are a long way from being able to handle _that_ request! For that matter, the default ATC doesn't even know how to give actual vectors, or what a SID or STAR is, whereas third party stuff mostly has that figured out. The default has improved a lot since product launch, but it is still stuck in the 90s as far as basic functionality goes.
    No voiced usage, despite the fact that MS practically invented it with Cortana. Complete lack of knowledge of standards, like the aforementioned SIDS and STARS, much less altitude or speed restrictions on those procedures, no ability to make more varied requests, like "Say altimeter for CALLSIGN", or "CALLSIGN would like 4,000 feet". It's almost like they didn't even try to improve it from FSX. Personally, I've solved that problem (somewhat) by going with pilot2ATC, but it costs as much as the base level sim, which many simmers would strongly object to, and has it's own set of problems and issues.
    The only thing that approaches real world ATC is obviously VATSIM, but I find it to be un- or under-staffed every time I try to use it, so I've given up on it. Not only do I not have the client installed, I'd have to resort to google to figure out where to get it, and I would need instructions on how to use it, that's how long it's been since I even tried. The last time I tried, which admittedly was well over a decade ago because I took a long break from simming, I got a rookie controller whose instructions led to me overrunning the runway at KLAS and essentially putting my 737 down in the desert, several miles outside of town. Hopefully in that amount of time, the training requirements have led to the chances of that happening being practically nil, but if it's not staffed, it's not staffed, and since it's all volunteer, there's nothing anybody can do about that except maybe beg.
    I'm off topic, but I would care for your insight as to the 600 fpm "guideline" for unpressurized aircraft, as well as whether or not those "variables" will actually be variable as the progress on the NXi continues.
    Kev

    The start of the video(the nerdy stuff) is absolutely what I needed. As a non-pilot work on installing real life cockpit suite, I have a hard time understanding those LPV, LNAV, VNAV, RNAV when demonstrating the system capability.
    One question remains, since it cannot be simulated in the sim, how to determine which approach performance that you will have and on which stage of the flight that you will know it. Will the ATC tell you that it is LNAV only today ? The G500 TXi system I played around with, on the GTN 750Xi has the predict RAIM capability, which you can input your destination and estimated arrival time, and it will have some output that I have not looked into further. Might try it on my Garmin Trainer later.

    Kip does it again! Excellent video. You are very articulate and your love of aviation is evident. One thing though... I could never get my RNAV to work. The diamond never showed up. I can't figure out how to activate the approach or do you have to activate it? It's greyed out. Also, I was using Little Navmap and/or Navigraph to make my flight plan. So it currently only works if you make the flight plan inside the world map only? Thanks.

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  3 роки тому

      Thank you! You can program your flight plan manually in the NXi, but it can be a little buggy right now (I've had menus get stuck open). I also couldn't request IFR clearance from ATC once I programmed the flight plan either, so because of those things I used the World Map for this video -- it seems to work consistently right now. If Little Navmap or Navigraph allow you to export the flight plan (PLN file), you can load that file into the MSFS World Map by clicking "More" at the bottom of the world map, then "Load File", and choose the PLN file to load your custom flight plan.
      Which approach are you flying specifically? Does it have vertical guidance (LPV or LNAV/VNAV?). If it's an LP or LNAV approach, it will not have vertical guidance.

      @@KipOnTheGround Thanks for the response, Kip. I can't remember off hand what kind of RNAV approach I randomly picked but I will fly the same one you used in this video later today and see what happens. Yes, my imported flight plans are PLN files so that wasn't the problem. Oh, I love that VNAV. You did a nice explanation of that. I didn't know how to use it yesterday. I use in the CJ4 working class mod model and it's a lot of fun. I like finding a approach with a lot of restrictions and watch the CJ4 VNAV work. I just control the throttle like you did with the Caravan. Very fun. Thanks again.

      @@GumperVanLier During the approach phase of the flight, you can look at the HSI on the PFD to see which type of RNAV approach is in use. To the right of the magenta "GPS" label it'll show LPV, LP, L/VNAV, LNAV, etc. LP and LNAV do not provide vertical guidance.

      Sorry to bother you again, Kit, but it didn't work. The VNAV worked which was neat. Funny, I had no altitude for Fosan like you did (3600) but mine started at Hedgi at 3000 and then 2000. It worked though but the RNAV diamond never appeared despite clicking the APPR button. Funny, the diamond appeared once I landed on the runway! I'm at a loss here. I may have to go back to the regular G1000 which I really don't want to do.

    Well, that excellent tutorial has earned you another subscriber. I am a little conflicted as I love flying the Milviz PC-6 and have also been trying to get to grips with the NXi but sadly these two don't (yet?) play nice together. It's incredible how far flight simming has come in the last ten years or so.

    I didnt know you could reply using the keyboard numbers without opening the ATC window. Also I didnt know the white bar on the Airspeed strip in the PFD meant full flap range. I suspected tho

    • @KipOnTheGround
      @KipOnTheGround  3 роки тому +1

      General Options / Accessibility / Pilot Interaction System. There is an option to change from the new mode ("lock") to the old mode ("legacy"). So if you hate the new way, you can switch back to legacy. Under that option, there are several options for the tooltips. I turned both the "INSTANT" tooltip options to "OFF". I personally like the new way, since the click-drag interaction lets you make large changes easily. The only thing to get used to is the mechanic of holding left mouse button, then right clicking to press a button in (applies to buttons like the Heading dial or FMS knob).

    Kip on the Ground: Today is 1-12-2022. After learning from your videos, I have made a couple of successful ILS flights using the G1000NXI in the Cessna 172. Runways Locator intercepted ok and also the Glideslope at the FAFs also captured successfully. Your videos have really helped. Will try flying this same course with VNAV. have not used VNAV yet. Two questions; 1. When you enable VNAV (At cruise altitude I assume.), do you also click NAV MODE on for this? 2. Do you key in the runway frequency for this RNAV approach? Apparently LOC 1 was not applicable for this RNAV GPS approrach. Thank you KIP so much. I do experience ATC wrong information at times, like landing at another airport while ATC continually gives me the takeoff airport instructions like, remain in the pattern when that is not even applicable.

    You have to use B and D to update Altimeter to QNH *_and_* align the heading indicator to the compass position taking into account magnetic variation of your position. B & D keys do this.

    Another excellent video. I think I got the VNAV thing now. Going over the dedicated panel in the flight plan was very useful.
    Do you have video where you cover the phases of flight? What it really means when CDI says "TERM", what other possible values there are and how the Garmin has information on type of approach if you set it up (and inspect/edit it) from within the cockpit instead of the magic of having the flight plan be automatically generated.

      Term means full deflection left or right is 3nm. Enroute (ENR) is 1 mile. And Approach (APR) is 0.3, for LNAV, and gets more sensitive if you have WAAS allowing for a LPV or LP approach
