Hi Garrett, I discovered you recently and have been binging your content when possible ever since!
I love it that you are sharing your educated insights but still enjoy smacking home your opinion when it counts 😅
I'm about to start renovating a small house by the sea in Central Portugal and I'm obsessed by the British colonial style. I think you just gave me the confidence to bring it on! Thank you x

I just renovated my former living room into a library combining William Morris, Arts & Craft with Dark Academia. I've been a book collector for more than fifty years and just love that I'm featuring antiquarian children's illustrated books in this room. (Yes we have parts of the collection in every room.) Dark green velvet couches, Morris wallpaper, built-in bookcases-- I only just finished it this year and am pretty sure it would be LeChic approved.

Teaching moment after teaching moment! And delivered with just the right amount of your trademark sass. I had no idea my lurking vibe was called "Dark Academia," but I'm totally onboard with that brand. Way more glamorous than "DaVinci's Inner Sanctum" or "Mad Genius Hoarder!" Enjoyed every second of this, Garrett!

I always thought storybook style homes were a little corny, but I have a new appreciation for them now that I know the history behind it. I would love to hear you talk about the Craftsman style in a future video! That's the most common architectural style here in Portland and I'm very fond it.

You do a great job explaining historical context and including visual examples, and I can tell that you are a true expert in your field. Would love to see 7 more styles sometime! The style you didn't mention but should in your next 'Awesome Interior Design Styles No One is Telling You About' is Pacific Northwest Modern

This was so interesting, Garrett! I love British Colonial and my house in FL was decorated that way. I never heard of it until I was in the UK and they just call it "Colonial". It was great because it allowed me to incorporate some Victorian family pieces into my tropical decor. Now I am in a mid-century styled loft in a city. Oh well....

Great video on some underappreciated styles! I love the quirky elements of storybook and dark academia styles. Always good to have some magic in your life! I'm trying to incorporate some of this into my own personal style without being too kitschy. I think using at least some older antique furniture and decor can help make it look more genuine, plus steering clear of anything that's too directly Disney or Harry Potter-esque.
I definitely lean more traditional (Georgian is one of my favourites too) but I can see the appeal of the desert modern style. The natural materials are beautiful. And I do like a good cactus!
In terms of other underappreciated styles, I'm keen on Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts and Craftsman styles, as well as English country and Scottish baronial styles.

There is a current version of Story Book used in the Carpathian mountains. Many houses and ski cabins use that style in Zakopane Poland. Look on one of the booking sites for Zakopane it is really cool.
Sweden uses the king names for period styles until about 1880, then styles get their own names. Swedish grace was the Swedish version of Art deco.

Two styles I love and no one talks about: 1) Swedish Gustavan -light colors, light natural woods, natural materials, but curvy almost french provincial furniture shapes- But with minimal non-shiny light finishes. But it works best in an older more traditional homes. 2) genuine midcentury Norwegian/Danish- teak MCM furniture, with beautiful intensely colored wool upholstery, worn genuine tribal oriental rugs, one or two actual antiques per room, small number of largish art pieces, modern lighting fixtures. Works best in modern homes with very large windows - my parents had sheer wool white curtains that ran ceiling to floor with subtle woven-in designs near the top and bottom.

Another fantastic video, Garrett! It was so enjoyable to watch you go over these rarely mentioned styles. Another media neglected style: I love Arts & Crafts/Mission/Prairie. In fact, I recently remodeled my kitchen with Arts & Crafts as the overiding influence. I'm now having Arts & Crafts flow throughout my home and working hard to not have it take over as a full genre like a museum piece. It's a fun challenge. I also love Southwestern/Santa Fe style. That's another one that works well with Modern and Desert Modern or Spanish. I'm in North Coastal San Diego county and all over this area we see Arts&Crafts, Spanish, Cape Cod, and Modern. Thanks for making me feel inspired!

I love the dessert modern style, and strangely enough, it is not that far removed from what they do with the more expensive houses here in the pacific northwest with our ocean views and mild climate. Clearly the desert scaping is not something done much here on Vancouver Island, we do live in a temporal rain forest climate, but the mild weather means an indoor/outdoor lifestyle with large expanses of glass if you have a view, are definite architectural design features.
Also, as you already know, I love my hollywood recency rams head coffee table, but it is mixed into more of a pacific northwest (think Douglas-fir detailing) and artisan style of decor.

Love this video! I like the desert style. Had a vacation home in Palm Desert but gave it to the ex in the split. I didn’t mind, though, because 114 degrees in the summer was so stupid hot! There was only two choices: hide indoors most of the day, or die. And the night wind! Blew dirt inside = a cleaning nightmare.
Would like to hear about the Art Deco period. I adore watching pre-code movies for the sets! The decor is sumptuous but, unfortunately, in black & white.

Several of my neighbors have done plaster over their drywall (actually over their wallpaper, too), and they are beautiful. One in the formal dining, one in kitchen, and one in a guest powder room. I am curious about use over time: repainting to change color, holes from hangings, etc. Thank you.

Too bad I only have one small house. Hollywood glam is much classier than the mirrored and crystal glitter glam. Desert modern is absolutely stunning. The textures are so interesting that it works perfectly with sleek modern shapes. I prefer woods and greenery, though, so I appreciate it from afar.

I’m a dark academia girl up here in Minnesota, but we’re planning to also get a place in Florida. I’m thinking of doing a darker, spookier version of British colonial with lots of green for that home. Desert modern gives me anxiety. Ew

Desert modern reminds me of Frank Lloyd Wright's indoor outdoor feel with the homes he designed. I would love to live where that could be incorporated, but, *sigh*...I don't. Thanks for another great video with lots to learn and think about!

“Futuristic” is my fave of those! I have the AH Stock Bar and enjoy meals at ( Carrera )Tulip Table daily. One out of the norm style I haven’t seen you address is “Decay”. It’s a love it or hate it one for most. A rather eccentric (almost 80 years old) , Artist friend and his hubby live in a really old home , and inside and out is what I would term, “Romantic Decay”. It is such pleasure to visit, and it’s really something special ! You are the very best Interior Designer on UA-cam (IMO) , you know that? I have seen many, and watch only three of you regularly. I love those of you that I both agree with and learn from. A 15 minute cuppa ☕️ Le Chic relax is always such a treat for me and know for so many others too. You really hit the good taste advice for one’s personal style, no matter which one they choose… for me, it’s a mix, which I feel any top Designer embraces… Cheers! 🍸

I like the British Colonial . My absolute favorite style is Mexican Mid Century modern as personified by Agustin Hernandez, kitchenware by Salvador Teran, the use of Tezontle, the colors of Luis Barragan, the use of some Spanish Colonial and Churrigueresque elements.

Fabulous video, Garrett! One of your best, and unique amongst your, ah, peers (they aren’t, though. You are the best). Here in Toronto, the city grew significantly at the turn of the twentieth century, so many of the houses are Edwardian. I see this style as a prototypical “transitional” style between Victorian and moderne periods. Even though we tore down our 107-year-old crumbling Edwardian, we ended up building another, primarily because of the relative narrowness of the city lot. The beauty of an Edwardian interior, I think, is that one can use beautiful, lush (but understated) trimwork, like panelling, cornice and ceiling mouldings and high baseboards, and paned sash windows windows, while incorporating a variety of furnishing styles, such as Georgian, or Hollywood glam, or even maximalism, as long as whatever is chosen is cohesive. The danger of an Edwardian house is the prevalence of little, dark rooms, and the tendency, here at least, to knock them all out and strip the interiors of any period character, because Edwardian style is not much recognized on this side of the “pond”. I note you didn’t include it, either. Maybe it’s not a thing in the US. Here, designers tend to either treat them like Victorian interiors (which they aren’t), or “modernize” them. I bought books on Edwardian architecture and interiors (mostly British) to inform our build, and they proved invaluable. After all, when le Chic isn’t handy, one has to make do! Thank you, once again.

Ohmigosh -- fabulous video! Like nothing else out there among designer videos. Georgian is my favorite period, but now that I've left the Philadelphia area and live in the desert, I no longer own it. Pembroke drop tables, sigh!!!
So agree with you about Hollywood glamour interiors. A few years ago, I visited Descanso Gardens in L.A. County and toured the Boddy House. The Boddy House is a 22-room mansion built in Hollywood Regency style in 1937. "In 2007, Boddy House was rehabilitated for the 43rd annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design, and decorated in a contemporary re-interpretation of its original Hollywood Regency style." The rooms were as you've described in your video -- beautiful!

My favorite style is "biophilic-eclectic." Biophilic design means to design in a way that is in harmony with the home's natural environment -- the biome in which the home exists -- and to design in a way that helps people connect more with nature. Eclectic because mixing traditional and modern is my jam. I love that Garrett touched on the idea of not forcing whatever style we happen to like upon a home, but rather letting the surrounding biome and the architecture of the home itself shape how we decorate, ideally using locally-sourced or inspired materials. I think this makes a home feel peaceful, and it's also more sustainable.

You most definitely have to do a entire video just dedicated two georgian-style! I happen to live in a house that is built after the Georgian architectural style and the entire neighborhood I live in is done the same way. This is not something that is talked about often and I would love to hear so much about it! I've lived in my house for 6 years and have been overtime collecting different antique pieces and changing certain things but we haven't done too much as far as drastic changes go and I'm dying to learn as much as I can

Love the British Colonial and the Desert Modern. But... I'm in Minnesota lake country on the edge of the Great Plains. Ranch and cabin style homes. Maybe you could talk about how to do elegant northern houses without becoming too "kitschy" in the lodge look or the lake cabin look? I'm tired of seeing buffalo plaid and knotty pine; I'm also not too excited about having seagulls, sailboats, and anchors all over. Ideas? Thank you for your wonderful channel!

I guess the reason I love these "obscure" design style videos is that it's teaching people there is more than just farmhouse and boho. When it comes to using 2nd hand and vintage/antiques, it's nice to be able to identify them and figure out how to use them or collect more. I really had no idea what I was looking at when I saw furniture and I just knew I liked some things but not others. I started saying I liked mid mod or grand millennial, but I really didn't, it's just the only words I knew to kinda describe what I wanted. When I first started I was so frustrated because the current design styles are dominating everything on the internet and stores that you would start to think that there is nothing else. It's hard to express your style if you don't know the language of design and "experts" telling you in a judging way what the current strict "rules" are on very few popular styles that they sell at Target and Ikea. I think people would stop painting everything white and destroying these antiques if they knew there was more. I stopped shopping at IKEA because I realized they only sell a specific style, and it's not mine.

This was a GREAT Video!! I agree, white on white..etc I am so bored with. Love the history behind them too. Fav style was that storybook with all that great wood detail. But Georgian molding esp the door tops/caps took my breath away. Style I would like to see..rococo revival.

Question: We bought an older cottage in the Finger Lakes, NY. It was renovated in the 90's and has the typical garbage linoleum and formica counter tops, etc... but it does have nice solid oak cabinets. Our budget won't allow both granite counter tops AND new cabinetry. So I am thinking LVP on the floor and granite with a deep single bowl sink and add hardware for the cabinetry. What are your feelings on leaving the wood versus painting them?
