My first big tarp was a canvass army tarp from Vietnam. I loved it, but it took some friends to help set up. I used to put it over my el cheapo tent, which I shared with my big dog.
Then I set my cook fire up at the other side of the site ( wilderness) and ran a zip line down the middle, for my big dog.
It was deluxe. I was there for two weeks, and the locals came to check on me.
They showed me around, and we found a an eagle nest, with chicks. They invited me to Snowbird, a huge privilege.
Just as we got everything set up, came a heckofa storm, and Doggo wasn't scared, at all.
    It was s beautiful trip.
    Thank you for the memory.

Now that's camping. That is how I step up my Wal-Mart tent, which is only good to keep bugs out and guaranteed to leak. A nice tarp and a cheap tent. Live like Kings during a rain storm, cook, eat, and just sit around enjoying being out there in the woods. With not a worry at all regarding the rain or getting wet. Dont trust those more expensive tents. plus when it is raining hard, no rain gets in when getting in or out of the tent. Love my tarps. Great video's enjoy them.. Stay dry and take care.

As a kid, I was always scared of T-storms. Now, I love them. My, to date, worst storm camping trip was a group hike on Mt. St. Helens. You could see the lighting bolt move across the sky, THRU the tent wall and fly!!! Rain was like an open faucet, a straight downpour. Tent leaked quite badly after a couple hours of the storm, so i moved to the big canvas tent, some of the group were in. Great trip. Great storm. Great mountain to hike!

Love that set up! That is one heck of a tarp, WHEW. I always use a tarp with my tent. Used to set up big tarps, truck camping, with my family. Used a rock to toss tarp cords up higher. Could park the truck under one edge. The tarp covered our picnic table and two tents. As you know it rains a lot in the Smokies. We enjoyed a great time in the mountains, rain or shine. So glad to see your set up. Thanks for sharing. Kentucky

There is something soothing about the shelter of a huge tarp on a rainy night. In the damp humid environment it’s nice to have the ventilation of the open sides with the precipitation protection. I did something similar one day with my North Face Windy Pass tent in the boundary waters of Wisconsin when we had an expected hot sunny day. I propped a reflective side of a polyurethane tarp over our inner tent to create some shade were we could not find any. Hours later, we used the same tarp as a third layer to keep us warm during a cold downpour. Tarps are a great addition to four season tents! Loved the video!

The tarp and inner tent is a great summer setup if you can find a spot with some air movement. I learned to Siege camp in the Army with SF. Spent a bunch of time in Norway, Alaska, and Ft Drum, NY. Was in the Blizzard of 77 when it snowed 75" in 2 days at -35. Elementary school collapsed, and we shoveled it out. No students, as all the roads were closed. I hate camping in hot humid weather, but they don't really care what you like. 90% of the time they sent us in winter. I love winter camping. You are a very good example for the camping community. I'm 73 now and getting back into going out this fall winter. It's amazing how things change, yet they really are the same. Ultralight is relative. My Team SGT would always say we are going to be walking around with 300 pounds of light weight s%^t. The person from the lab would always say it only weighs 8 Oz. We would say "Great that will barely be noticed in the anchor tied to our back. Love your attitude and grateful for your suggestions. Tarps are really the common connection to my past and now. I really need a break from all the politics. Thanks.

The most wonderful camping experience I've had was in the North Cascades in Washington. It was a campground, but that was fine. I had a great tent that was tall enough to stand up in. I had an inflatable mattress, with bedsheets, pillows and a quilt from home. I know that it's a bad idea to bring food inside a tent, but I was only going to be there one night, so I took a chance and brought my cooler of drinks and a bag of snacks inside. I was expecting a storm and I luckily grilled my steak, cleaned up the site and packed the car just as the rain started. Then I went into the tent.
What made it so great was that the rain came down hard. It rained for hours. I was dry, warm, snug and happy inside with my books, my sodas, and my snacks, while the rain tried in vain to reach me. Water poured off the walls, and I could hear it flowing under the floor. I fell asleep sometime near midnight and the rain never relented. I slept great.
    night

Thank you, great episode! We are two peas in a pod. I always have an enormous tarp set up when I camp in my van. I put it up between trees and use a very long nylon rope to attach if trees are far apart. I put half higher than the van and half to drop like a wall. The van can be totally under cover if it's raining. I bring chairs, a table, and a tiny kitchen, all collapsible, all under cover. I can catch rain water for washing up; if water is scarce, it can be filtered for drinking. I love camping in the rain! 🦋

Missouri here. Literally every season and type of weather possible, sometimes all in a few days. We get the brutal cold and miserable heat, floods and droughts, snow, tornadoes (on rare occasion in same day), thunder snows, hail, I even remember a dust storm when I was a kid. I live outside Nevada MO, right by KS border. Storm chasing and fishing my long time favorites. Love sitting under a tarp or in my hammock during a storm.

Long time fan (under another name). One thing I've always wondered about with you, rain and tarps. Groundwater is always a luxury. Where I live, ...ya, ...NO ! When ever 'we' go 'out', we ALWAYS carry a 'tarp, piece of poly, garbage bag (BPA free), something to hang in the rain to collect water ! I know it's a "show", not an encyclopedia and all possible incidentals can't, in a lifetime be covered. I wonder if maybe, one day, the subject might be covered... for everyone else's' edification. 'call it a public service announcement.
'Your friendly "professional Camper" in the Semi (hint, hint lol) God bless, Take care ... you and y'all. L.H.

At my grandmother's farm she had 5 gallon buckets full of those ceramic insulators. They would set up temporary electric fences to move the cattle around. They would graze down the wooded areas to the point they would look like a well groomed park. Any plants they wouldn't eat would get trimmed away or sprayed with Roundup. Some spots were more permanent, and would have barbwire fencing. The trees would eventually grow around it.

I have kept all of the old tent parts that are still good. During this storm I was at the beach. I recently purchased the 10x13 aquaquest. I dug out the old 8x8 tent poles from a trashed tent. Putting the tarp up with the loops on the underside did the trick for us. Run the poles through them, spike them in the sand, and the new age wigwam was perfect. No trees for the creative setup. 🤣.

Tying off to roots where the soil is too loose is a great 'hack.' TAKING A SON to college reminded me of my 'day' long ago: My eventual wife and her mother were unpacking her stuff about three cars down from where my Aunt and Uncle were helping me unload. Her mother had 'turned her out well,' with the most effective hairstyle and an 'upmarket' wardrobe that had been custom made at home. We were in the same group in Freshman orientation and we started dating. Neither of us sought relationships with anyone else and soon enough, married, we had two fine sons...and two useful college degrees! I am an AGED supporter of your channel now. My wife is lightly paralyzed, and I am a caregiver rather than an ardent suitor or Lifetime Lothario.

I bought a 12x14 tarp to do the same kind of large living area for an extended stay that would allow me day activities throughout a rainy spell for me and my cat. I would stay in a hammock and she in a single man tent that all I have to do is throw on the ground. I would not need the fly for the hammock, though I might bring the fly to set up a shower.

It's rainy here. A thunderstorm went through at sundown. It cooled us down from a low 90°F to I guess a low 80°. It will get cool here tonight around 75°F. We are watching for a tropical storm headed straight for us that may begin to be felt tomorrow evening. We re looking at 8 to 12 inches of rain before it passes through! Glad I am not hunkered down under a tarp then!

Well Luke, it's been in the upper nineties for weeks with winds and dust, then this past week the temps dropped into the sixties and we got some rain after a drought of like 170 days with no moisture. Now the temps a creeping back up, going to be a hot dry summer again and the forest are burning away here in NM. Of course the big fire in North central NM was caused by the forest service, a controlled burn that got out of hand. NM is home of Smokey the Bear, US Forest Service mascot, Lincoln National Forest, Southern NM, Capitan area. Nice set up and video as always, thanks for the work bro. Enjoy!

What a great way to manage a lot of fear- respect instead of fear. Maybe we could go a little further and say that nothing is completely to be feared like a thief who gives to the poor when no one else will.

Up on the West Coast of the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Wind and rain are our biggest factors, no trees so using a tarp with a tent and walking poles is a great shelter option plus midges (small mosquitos) are a major irritant so bug net tent is essential. We are so far north here at this time of year it doesn't get dark. I really enjoy your work Luke, strength and honour buddy. 🏝️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇬🇧

Great overnight camping video. Live in Columbus, Ga and 3-days this week will be over 100 degrees and it’s always very high humidity. Hotties months are May, June, July, August, September. After then Months gets around high to mid 80 degrees (F). Every 6 to 10 years there is a very, very light dusting of wet snow. Our cold Month is February and it my only get down 25 degrees maybe 1 or 2 days. Cold weather is 30 degrees (f) or higher. I wish my highs were 70 or 80 degrees. Great video again. I do miss your longer story times at dinner time when your camping. like you did in your older videos. Like the two inter wolves, your twin brother, and things like that.

Here in Portland, OR we average just over 40 inches per year. Rainy season starts in the fall, October usually, and lasts till July 5th (a running joke here). We get spring hail & sometimes winter snow. Occasional thunderstorms, which I love. Very lush & green.

I've been setting up my tent under tarps since the early 1990's. I keep my firewood and fire under the tarp. Nothing quite like being warm and dry while sitting next to a campfire with a hot cup of coffee and enjoying a downpour in the forest. Since the tent never gets wet, I can get away with cheap low-quality tents at the same time. The only difference is that I always use poly-tarps.

Luke, you have a LOT of rain where you live! I used to live in the convergent zone on the West side of the Cascades and got tired of the rain so I moved to a rain shadow desert on the Eastern side of the Cascades in Plain, WA. I love it here except for the fire danger which we now have to deal with every year.

This is actually a breath of fresh air. So many videos of a tarp not even big enough to cover a person in a storm. Thank you. I also love the idea using a tent inner with a tarp. Doing this should give other tent inners a more comfortable hot weather camping. Stay active and safe.
