Paul is my favorite Beatle but this is such a good song and possibly one of the original diss tracks. We also can’t forget how exquisite the slide guitar is.
HDYS was in response to McCartney's song "Too Many People" which also deserves a guitar cover. Lennon later borrowed from this song to make the similar sounding "Steel and Glass", another diss song against Allen Klein. Lennon later admitted that both songs were probably more about himself than their respective targets.
Oh my god, I couldn't click faster when I saw the notification. My favourite John Lennon song, I was just listening to it! I prefer the version of the takes 5 & 6 but this one is also very good. Perfect cover as expected. 👍
On the topic of Beatles solo albums, I’ve always wanted to hear your take on some Wings. Especially their heavier songs like Rock Show or Beware My Love. The best Beatles guitar covers and most accurate tones I’ve ever heard. Keep it fab Sam!
I’ll definitely do some Wings songs soon. The fact that there are so many songs to cover is exciting to me. But what makes it worthwhile is all of your reactions and comments :)
I heard in the GTE podcast that you guys were talking John’s black Strat and you mentioned the Imagine sessions that George was using John’s ‘61 sonic blue with a different neck attached to it For the money, it does look like the CFB strat that he could’ve used but that’s just me entirely
They’re definitely two different Strats. We know this because John’s cousin mentioned that in 67, John gave him the Gretsch 6120 and he asked for the blue strat hanging on the wall
@@sampopkin Well yeah! George is mostly just improvising, so it must be hard to memorize and play the exact same notes. Btw, for George’s guitar is the high and low e tuned down to D?
Bellissima il tutorial più interessante e impeccabile di questo bellissimo pezzo di J.Lennon anche l'assolo fatto proprio bene congratulations maestro.👍😊.Per avere la tabs come si deve fare?
As Lennon told biographer Hunter Davies in 1968, “I’d been kingpin up to then. Now, I thought, if I take him on, what will happen? It went through my head that I’d have to to keep him in line if I let him join. But he was good, so he was worth having. He also looked like Elvis. I dug him.”
Might be a bad question but do you make tabs? I’ve looked everywhere and all the tabs I can find seem to be wrong and I can’t find the take they are based off of such as the UG tab. Looking for George’s slide.
as far as electric what else did JOHN use on 'PLASTIC ONO' and 'IMAGINE'? all the pics i've seen it's the 'casino' but i would not be surprised if he didn't use others like the LP junior that would go on to become his main git. i'm pretty sure by the time of definite breakup none of the 3 were using 'vox' amps at all but, again, i'm not sure what would you know about the amps?
According to a sketch by Klaus Voormann at the time of the Plastic Ono sessions, John said he would use his electric resonatior 'dobro' on every song on the album. He probably used the Casino on Hold On at the least. And for Imagine he went back to the Casino for the most part, but might have used the resonator on It's So Hard and some others Plastic Ono was mostly a Fender Silverface Showman amp. Imagine was all Fender- Twin Reverb, Blonde Bassman, Silverface Vibro-Champ
@@sampopkin as i said to the best of my knowledge 'vox' amps were pretty much over with fer all of them by '69 but, again, i could be wrong. if they did use them at all after that it was pretty rare.
Haha that’s a nice compliment man. I noticed on some of George’s slide solos like Wah Wah he’s a bit out of tune. But his mastery of smooth and delicate melodies makes him the greatest. I can only do a bad faux George

I reckon Bob Dylan invented the diss track, but this song definitely perfects the artform haha
@@ClaydenLee yeah positively 4th st is nasty

Totally agree with you about the exquisite slide guitar lines!!!!
It's so cool that George Harrison Played on John Lennon's considering Yoko ate George's biscuits
“That’s the best he’s ever played in his fucking life” - John Lennon on Sam Popkin
❤️😂
One of your best covers so far! I vote for more solo John on Sam’s channel!
Thanks Jake!
@@sampopkin His stuff has a looseness and a rawness that seems like that'd be good for you.
Yes! I would LOVE to see "Well Well Well"
Slide guitar by George Harrison.....
Even though it’s completely directed to my favorite Beatle it’s an amazing song and the best diss track out there ! Amazing cover Sam!
I love it! I like that George's slide shines through a bit more on takes 5 & 6 but it's cool to see what he was doing on the original!
Amazing!!! you got the exact Harrison guitar tone!!!!
You nailed George's part, super impressive dude
I don’t know if I have the courage to call this John’s best solo song, but it’s definitely one of them! Fantastic cover! Can you do Out The Blue??
Totally!
Very very nice. You got George’s slide touch just right. Thanks!
love that the guitars look like johns and georges
The fact that he actually removed his pickguard just for this video amuses me and also the fact that he did his promise.
would love to see you do cold turkey by john lennon
Excellent , great work.
Omg, such a great song

Damn bro your slide work is exquisite.

excellent performance recalling the post beatle stage

Even before finishing watching the vid, I can tell it's SO AWESOME!

That was great can you do a cover of this guitar can't keep from crying please
I was waiting for this video! Amazing job as always :)
Absoultely perfect cover, John would be proud!
John's superb and nuanced rhythm guitar skills are given justice with your rendition, my friend! Great cover!
Always love
great cover!
Blown away by the slide work! Excellent.
Sam..... Como siempre excelentes tus covers... Youre sound its great... Saludos mty nl Mexico
Muchas gracias!
Awesome. Well done man! 😎
As far as solo John, I'd love to see you play "(Just Like) Starting Over" someday! 🍻
And you guitar solo its..... Sublime
Awesome cover, Sam! On of the best Lennon tracks. What a beautiful tone you got on your Casino, could listen it for hours.
Very cool playing mate xx
The best clue John and crew released to prove original Paul was sacrificed in 1966. Those freaks were right when they Said you was dead.
I hope to see more "Harrisisms" on slide. Thank you.
Thanks! Be sure to check out my other george solo covers. What is Life, Handle with Care, My Sweet Lord, etc. 😁
This is just amazing! I’m so glad I could help!! Peace and love ❤
Your cover was helpful as always! Thanks Evy
Such a great job recreating a great track!
This is excellent. Playing, gear, execution... all top notch. I'll be using it to better myself as a guitarist :)
Lol! It's like you're trolling us! Another great one
"This guitar is just crippling beyond belief, I can't play it"
For me, the best guitar song on Imagine is Gimme Some Truth.
i would love to see give me love guitar cover:)
Anything for you 🥹
How about Too Many People for next?
Great idea.
Cool instrumental. You are a great player.
A great cover as usual, I wish I could get as good as you someday

Amazing. Now you have to give us Too Many People :)
I second that!
Amazing ✨👌🏼
Hell yeah!!!! this is tnt
Very cool 😎 song!!!!!!!! Paul this !!!!! Lol 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
To be honest I think “How Do You Sleep - Take 5 & 6 / Raw Studio Mix” is better than the final mixed version. Great cover though!
I agree
Me too
I agree, esp with george’s guitar licks in the verses
Please, do something from the McCartney's RAM album! How about Heart of the Country?🥺🥺🥺
I was very close to covering that this summer. But I might wait till I buy a Rickenbacker bass. Will happen soon
I was nearly a threetles track as well but Ringo thought it too harsh if I remember rightly
And didn't participate
Yes idk if ringo was supposed to play on it, but he was there and disapproved
Amazing job Sam! Can you also cover the Take 5-6 version as well?
Thanks! Maybe..honestly these george slide covers take a lot out of me. But one day, I promise 😁
@@sampopkin Plz do!

Not for this song, just standard. But a lot of his slide stuff was open E or Open G

What did happened if the beatles get reunión in 2023 if gorge and john didn't die?
This was John’s response to “Too Many People” by Paul. George Harrison played slide on it.
Bom demais!
PLEASE COVER WAH-WAH BY GEORGE HARRISON
It’s in my immediate queue
Paul is my favorite Fab; but yeah, this is about the best Lennon post Beatle song.
I was wondering if maybe if you were ever gonna do the take 5 and 6 versions of this song, it's my favorite version
Yeah a lot of people have requested that take. I will definitely do it at some point!
❤ciao maestro SAM,la chitarra slide della parte di George è in standard tuning?😊😊😊grazie per la risposta sei bravissimo congratulazions
Thanks, yes it is standard tuning for George’s slide guitar
would you consider covering lennon's song #9 dream. Not sure what album it is on
From Walls and Bridges 1974! Yeah I definitely will
The man was so full of self hate. Party #2 took the high road.
Great slide playing!!! Do you set up your Strat differently for slide playing or do you just keep it the same?
Thanks! I like all my guitars to have a little bit higher action. This allows me to play both slide and normal

i just saw your comment haha
Not a bad question, I wish I could help
hi, can you explain why is it easier to play slide guitar in standard tuning? i need some music theory lesson ahaha

Open E for the slide guitar?
Standard for this song! But George often did play in Open E
😊❤👍👍👍👍👍👍👌
Did you take the pickguard and Bigsby off your Casino?
I took the pickguard off. I never had a bigsby, but am thinking about putting one on
@@sampopkin are you planning to keep it that way?
@@elirosen1391 what do you think? I like it the way it is but for certain songs or to get George or Paul’s look it would be helpful

The rhythm guitar? Epiphone Casino
what tune is using for the solo guitar?
Standard

this version is making me not like the solo on the original because your is in tune a lot more while george's sounds a bit flat here and there

I like it better without the lyrics!
I’m not going to talk about those songs which both Beatles - John and Paul - showed the disagreement between them. That was really sucks !

Beef Jerky, please. ❤
Raw mix is better imo
Is that the one with the recorded footage?
Yes that was take 5-6
