Mannnn… I got a chicago story for you. I was trying to go to the post office after dropping a load. GPS decided to take me down a residental street. Got to the end of the street and it was a round about specifically designed for cars. I could of made it easily if there weren’t cars parked on both sides of the street. I panicked and knocked on doors trying to get them to move their cars for me.. no one anwsered. So i took a deep breath, evaluated the situation, and realized i could slide my tandems all the way up and get as close to the cars as possible to make the turn. I barely made it… never put myself in another situation like that again .

@@kalashnikov1343 honestly, When you’re downtown in a city you’ve never been to like I was in my Chicago story, you try trusting your gps because one wrong turn and you could potentially be on a bridge with a low weight limit or a street with a low bridge. Just goes to show why trip planning is so important any and everytime you hop behind the wheel of a tractor trailer. I know I learned my lesson

Never was a tire thumper , this hightech device came out thank goodness. You remove cap on valvestem , depress tool into stem , it assesses the internal air ratio , when done , like a turkey probe , a little calibrated stick readout appears , danged if it doesnt show your exact tire pressure within a tight tollerance , get one!

Trying to pull out at 10:34 just gave me an idea:
Since most car drivers understand what hazard lights are for & why they are used. But don't realize how hard it is for semi's to make tight turns. If semi's had some front, side & rear blinking yellow hazard lights, that they could easily turn on before having to make a tight turn like that in traffic. It'd probably trigger many drivers to use caution when approaching you. Instead of waiting until the last minute to realize the truck driver doesn't have enough room.

I also have a stretched Peterbilt, I have also come to learn that most gps trucker or not, when it comes to trucks in general especially stretched trucks, gps sucks. I always use Google maps to pull up a general route, then I’ll spend 10-15 min using street view making my own route I know I can make it through. That extra time creating a safe route i know I can fit has saved me a boat load of hassle over the years

I'm sure you know but it's a good thing to remind yourself, what is the worst that could happen if you come up on a low bridge. Just remind your self that you can always back up it's much better than the alternative. You may have to get out and tell traffic behind you to back up or set the brakes and wait it out better than recking your rig.

That tarp system is a neat setup, much different than the old covered wagons. Like you mentioned though, snow and ice plays havoc on it, then there's the "if something hits the side of that trailer" you're possibly screwed getting a load off without major tarp surgery. Still though that would be handy on a tight schedule, no getting filthy manually fighting tarps, no bungie cords, no loose tarps, no need for tarp protection, no lost time, ect ect the list goes on. Be well worth having, would definitely out weight other possible hassles.

Chicago is a fun place with many bridges and overpasses that are not high enough to get a truck under them, and wouldn't you know it, my trainer, after a big lecture on "keeping an eye out" and not being one of them drivers that tries to go under a low clearance underpass, does exactly that. Cops had to get involved to stop and back up traffic so we could get turned around... trainer got a ticket... good times.

Is there a practical purpose for having it stretched with fifth wheel so far away from cab? Seems like it would just make life more difficult.

Gives a more comfy ride and also helps you haul more

Stretched frames move weight away from the steers. You can haul more ans ride much more comfortably.
Makes maneuvering a bit more tricky but is worth the bassle.

What's the point in the tall shifter if you just hold it halfway down most of the time anyways? Just curious

Drivers should respect the Semi. They never know, their box of rubber fists could be on that trailer.
