Geezus, what a great show. Flo was awesome. After it got to be her trademark, and people started to expect it, the writers started playing around with it, and would lead up to it. They would have the studio audience on pins and needles waiting for her to say it. Sometimes, she would bluff, and prolong the anticipation. It was delightful
Linda was jealous of how much attention Flo was getting from the Kiss My Grits so she pushed the Producers so they decided to give her her own Show to applease Linda. I think it ruined the chemistry of the Show and I'm really disappointed that Linda would be so small.
Diane Ladd that replaced her was the original Flo that was nominated for an AA, she was wonderful in the Belle part but did not last long. I never liked the Jolene character, she wasn't funny.
Linda Lavin was a jealous cow. Most of the fan mail back in those days were about how much they loved Flo. This made Linda furious as she was meant to be the "star" of the show not Polly Holiday. Linda made her life on the set a living hell which made Polly leave. If you look at the episodes after Polly left, Linda made sure her Alice character was front and centre in a majority of the storylines. There were dumb scenarios where she disguises herself as a man snd dresses up in some stupid bunny outfit. Anything to get laughs and attention, which didn't work as it wasn't funny. The Alice character was not funny nor is Linda Lavin. Fine as a dramatic actress but not as a comedienne.
Agreed. I vaguely....remember one episode,{I think} of Linda being reviewed in a play she did,and the review said she was....mediocre. She reacted to that, like she was dying of cancer. I probably rolled my eyes at that scene.
I loved flo but Vera (Beth Holland) was my favorite. Beth was extremely talented and originated the role of Amy in Sondheim's "Company". But Alice was a great 30 minutes of TV to look forward to. As a child I called the show "Mel's Diner". Somehow I thought that was the name of it.
A go-to phrase like "kiss my grits" Gary Coleman's " what you talkin' bout Willis" and Jimmy Walker's "Dyn-O-mite!" would not work in this day and age, nor would it be funny.
Flo was the show my favorite show back in the day kiss my.grits

Heart message kiss my grits
Flo made the show. The episodes without her were awful. How the show lasted after she left is beyond belief.
