The Realm of the Red Ape at Chester Zoo has an indoor rain system to simulate the Bornean
Orangutan's natural habitat and to maintain the humidity.
Babies have an amazing built in instinct present from birth to hold on tight to their mother thick long chestnut coloured hair and this baby girl gives us a fantastic demonstration of that instinctive skill in this video as she holds on tight to mom underneath her as she looks for food during a scatter feed around the Chester Zoo indoor enclosure
Sarikei's son Tombol loves his mother and his little sister and sits watching them both.
The adorable baby is 40 year old Sarikei's 4th baby and is a wonderful ray of hope to the survival of these amazing rare critically endangered animals

Orangutan birth Tribute to Grandmother Martha
The Critically Endangered baby Girl Bornean Orangutan was born at Chester Zoo to devoted mother Sarikei and Father Willie and is the newest addition to the Bornean Orangutan family at the famous zoo and a wonderful legacy for Grand Old Lady Martha who sadly passed away at the remarkable age of 59 on 16th January 2024

Birth of critically endangered orangutan at Chester Zoo
Chester Zoo is has a very successful record of Orangutan births at the zoo and most of the Orangutan Mothers are able to rear their own young without the assistance of zoo staff, this is largely due to the expert care and facilities the World Class Zoo provides for the animals.
The current animal population have had valuable experience with babies and have observed relatives caring for young, using this learning and experience to enable them to rear their own offspring
Critically Endangered Orangutans
Bornean Orangutans have been considered critically endangered since 2016 with an only an estimated 100,000 left in the wild. They are seriously in danger of extinction which makes the birth of this new baby orangutan very special indeed

I thought at first mom was shifting baby so that little brother could get a hug too but when that didn't happen and he stated pouting, it broke my heart. 💔So, instead of being mad at baby sister, he gives her a kiss. Oh, my heart. 🥰❤🩹
He misses mom so much. He's still sweet little tombol though.

What a sweet boy, Tombol. He misses his mother's attention and wants a hug but is left out. So sweet how he kisses his baby sister, that is adorable. Mother is too protective and moves sis away. Poor Tombol. No one to play with. Sweet boy.
Instead of being jealous and pouty faced, he's gave baby kiss so he can be part of it all. Despite feeling second best, this gives him some involvement.
What a sweet, patient big brother ❤! Tombol is trying very hard to be patient to start playing with baby sister Myrtle but when she is right there in front of him, he can't resist giving her just a Tiny kiss😘!!! He is such a kind young man, I remember when he was a little one and he made friends with the gibbons that shared their enclosure. I can't wait to see these two siblings play together ♥️♥️♥️!

Tombol looks totally dejected and ignored, I think he just wants a hug and to let him know he is loved. The way he kissed the baby was absolutely beautiful. ❤️🇬🇧

@@ApeTracker1 This is a sturdy family for sure. I just wish I could hug them all. For my birthday my son adopted a mountain gorilla for me , I really feel for the delivery man he will be knackered on delivery day. ❤️🇬🇧

I don’t think Tombol is dejected. He seems very loving towards little Myrtle, and his mom lets him close to her and doesn’t push him away.

I feel the same way. To be born to swing through treetops in soaring jungles but now to be forced to stare at grey concrete and metal fences is horrific.

Ok so i have lived a life that definately has tempered me to be a hard man. Ill just say that i people have tried to kill me twice and once almost succeded by stabbing me in my spleen. I am also former army seven year service. But this broke me. It is the most precious moment of pure love i have seen in a long time and it maybe thawed a part of my soul.

Oh, poor little guy! He really wants to love the baby, but it took all of Mama's attention away! @1:17-Now, that's true love, if I've ever seen it. So many times I have seen videos of poachers and plantation owners with illegal baby orangutans, trying to tell the police and primate rescue staff that they found the baby abandoned by its mother, and they were actually trying to save it(when the truth is that they murdered the mother and stole the baby, either to keep as a pet, or sell in the illegal pet trade). There is no record of any orangutan mother purposely abandoning her baby. You can see the proof of this fact here! Btw, I can't stop laughing at the baby's hairdo.

I don't know what's going on with Orang-Utans and in zoos. How old is Tombol? In macaques the juvenile boys build an own group while daughters also have peer groups but stay near their moms lifelong. Isn't that possible in zoos? Or is Tombol still too young? Or isn't that usual in Orangutans? He is a droll boy.
Tombol will be 7 years old in April, males usually go break away from their mothers between 7 and 10, females it is longer. Hope this helps 🥰
