    Probably your mentor tells you this but try and learn to delegate more of your work. It’s help you keep more sane hours! Especially as PM if you’re making all the wireframes then you’re not allowing the designer to take more control and rely on you (which eats up more of your time). It helps me more to focus on if what we’re building will be useful or not to a customer, so that the designer knows they aren’t designing something that won’t actually solve any customer problem!

    • @gilbertwarner3094
      @gilbertwarner3094 2 роки тому

      Yes exactly. PMs tend to have scope creep in their work. Setting boundaries and delegating can help you focus on product outcomes rather than filling in for other functions.

    Lol. Legit hustle. All I can say. You should also do a video when you have fire drills! :D lolol. Like if your team is waiting on a dependency from another team and they basically come back to you say you won't get it for another month/quarter lol. You suddenly find out your solution is no longer valid because architecture has shifted. Back to back meetings where you're trying to de-escalate a problem, etc. Fun times, war-stories from the trenches lololol.

    • @chloeshih
      @chloeshih  2 роки тому +10

      Omg haha I would notttt have time to film a video if I have to put out fires!! Even on a day like this, I struggled finding time to film properly 😩😩 but those days do happen hehe

    remarkable is pretty UNremarkable, most features are slammed behind additional paywalls such as using onenote, google drive. If i'm paying 300$ for it, I would expect these to come in the most basic plan (they come in the 3rd tier most expensive plan). Pretty dissapointing.

    Discord is the most phenomenal thing when you work for a tech company. Especially makes my employer super comfortable with how many hours I work because he can see me always in a voice channel during work hours not muted and whenever he pops on, he knows I will hear him and respond, especially when I work from home. Being 9 to 5 on voice channel all of our teams are accessible and the screen sharing is way better than Zoom or any other garbage.

    Pro tip: Always have a cereal bar or protein bar with you. I have it right at my desk so on a busy day I just chew my protein cereal bar drink some milk and still work on a somewhat filled stomach. Never be hungry while you are working guys, it is not healthy.

    Thanks for posting Chloe. Aside from some of the specifics of your personal life/human/content creator stuff, the rest of this feels so familiar to an average day in my life as a PM.
    I tend to work a very similar schedule with a full day of work, followed by some late night sessions. PMs just have so much to do, it is hard to fit it all in. I definitely straddle the line when it comes to maintaining a healthy schedule and feeling productive. It always helps me to see other PMs, who outwardly seem to really have everything together, struggle through their daily grind. It really helps me realize that I'm not alone with the struggle. I'll have to check out the remarkable tablet, it looks very helpful.

    Question! I've noticed that a lot of people who work in tech in Cali start meetings pretty late, compared to techies who work in non-tech industries (I work in higher education). Is this standard for big tech companies? Our stand-ups have always been at 8:45 am before everyone gets going, since our day starts at 8:30 am. Do you all compensate by working later into the evening, or is this just because you work with colleagues who are in different time zones?

    Thank you for sharing a realistic day in your life. :)
    As a video suggestion, do you think you could make a video for the people who graduated university but had a really rough start, which affected being stunted in career opportunities? If you like you can make a video like that! I was just hoping maybe you might have known people who were in similar situations and were able to get back to track in their life. I totally understand if this topic might not be possible to make for a video. :)

      I’d say I have a normal 8 hr work day! But on days where I have big deliverables (exec reviews, PRDs, strategy docs), then i do the post dinner shift and work a couple more 😩 I think it takes me longer to get things done since I’m new to the company and we’re rapidly growing. Hope things come more naturally to me as time passes!

    Always love your content! One thing I’m a tad surprised to see is that you’re drawing wireframes. Designers are not there to make PM’s wireframe pretty. They’re hired to think abou the user journey and explore the flows. They’re the ones having education and experience in it. You also mentioned your passion in UX research and talking to users. Here I also think you can delegate more 😊 I didn’t mean to criticize. I’m sure you’re a great PM, but had to say this you also mentioned burnouts.

    • @chloeshih
      @chloeshih  2 роки тому

      Oh yeah I definitely don't wireframe that much. Our designs own the actual designs. Sometimes if I'm trying to convey an idea asynchronously, I'll make a super mofi mock to describe the interaction. Sometimes I'll use a flow chart diagram. I'll basically choose whichever tool is easiest for me to describe the experience!

      i actually do lots of paper prototypes, but didn't use the tablet until they sent it over (my first time hearing about them!). before, i wrote and drew a lot on my actualy notepad. i also own an ipad pro for digital drawings. interestingly, i don't use the ipad for sketches or to do lists. i've only had the tablet for about a month now, and i've been using it pretty regularly to get thru my work day. i really like having a space by my keyboard to write my quick thoughts on actually!
