  • My first time photographing a storm at the coast, epic waves breaking over Porthcawl Lighthouse as storm Ciara hits the west coast of the United Kingdom
Join me as I photograph epic waves breaking over Porthcawl Lighthouse during a storm. This was my first time photographing a storm at the coast and it was incredibly challenging due to the 70-80mph winds, sea spray, and poor light. Despite the difficulties, I captured some breathtaking images.
Highlighted technique: Seascape photography in challenging conditions
    Location: Porthcawl Lighthouse, United Kingdom
Main takeaway: The difficulty of capturing images during a storm and the importance of proper planning and preparation

So cool Geoff. Love the black and white with the red light. I think being overcast adds to the drama. Great stuff.

Thank you Jim. The timing was a bit off, I think on reflection, based upon other images I have seen, Sunday afternoon rather than morning would have been better, for light/tide/storm progression. Lots learnt at least.
Are you planning on doing any more videos from the Woo?

@@GeoffMoorePhotography I still think the images you captured were awesome and it was fun to watch you battleing the elements.
I haven't made a video for a long time. Work and life needing more attention. Had to hit pause on my photography for a bit. Need to get back behind the lens soon. Always enjoy your vids.

Well done. Commitment to getting up predawn, very impressed. More back story would be great. Looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks Mike. Just got back from a week on Skye, 5 days of shooting morning noon and night :) Conditions were appalling, but I think I have managed to get at least a couple of keepers.
I'm hoping to have some new material out soon and with more backstory so to speak. I'm finding it a challenge between to much waffle, rather just getting to the point. So thank you for your feedback.

I tip my hat for the live coverage of this Geoff... nice touch to overlay the video with your stills, which I like all four.

how odd, just came back from Porthcawl this weekend in an attempt to do an update vlog. Weather wasnt what we had hoped for, but might have enough footage to do a new video on this location soon

@@GeoffMoorePhotography I was at this very location on Friday night too, but its local for me just 10 minutes. The tide was in but low, hope you managed to get something...............

@@cerealkiller4248 yeah we got there for around 2am, got a few interesting photos of the steps at high tide and a blustery wind. Waited out for dawn and I had hopped for some nice storm light on the calm side of the lighthouse but alas its didn't pan out, still have some nice images but they lack any of the drama people have come to expect from this location.
Combined with a tide that was really on its way out it proved to be a difficult adventure photographically. However its the first outing for me in a while so still really enjoyed the change of scene.

You did well to get anything at all in those conditions. I live close by so I went to the seafront last Sunday afternoon for high tide, but conditions were really difficult and the place was packed with people, so I didn't get any decent shots. I should have followed your example and visited at dawn. When I went the streets were full of foam - it looked as if someone had poured a truck full of bubble bath into the sea!

Thank you Glen, I have got equally difficult conditions today up on the Isle of Skye. It's hammering down with rain, horizontal and windy as heck. I'm hoping to start the video work tomorrow on my first propper day, (here for a week) I hope you will stick around and enjoy what I produce.

Be glad the Dawn didn’t bring more light, it would have ruined these shots. The darkness of the skies just adds to the sense of destruction and doom with storm images. These are perfect.
